The state of alienation and the process of un-alienation of spirit in nature: an investigation upon the imanence of spirit and idea in Hegel's philosophy of natureHelena Wergles Ramos 15 April 2010 (has links)
This dissertation aims at demonstrating that, according to Hegels Logic, Philosophy of Spirit and Aesthetics, the domains of nature and spirit cannot be conceived as two completely isolated domains, but rather as domains which are intimately connected by two important conceptual grounds, namely, the fact that Hegel conceives both nature and spirit as two modes of manifestation of the Absolute Idea and the fact that Hegel defines nature as the spirit existing as alienated from itself. In this way, we shall analyze such state of alienation, in order to clarify exactly what it is and how it expresses itself among the authors descriptions of the natural realm; besides, we shall also investigate how such alienation is, so to speak, overcome by the spirit lying within the essence of nature, which leads to the rise of consciousness. However, according to Hegel, the overcoming of such state of alienation is not something that happens instantly: on the contrary, it consists in a gradual process, in which the immanent spiritual essence of nature unfolds itself and becomes more clearly manifested as the property of self-movement begins to be acknowledged as something inherent to the natural beings, organic nature being the apex of spirits manifestation within nature. In the realm of organic nature, the soul a term that is related to the Latin word anima, the source of animation of organisms in general grants them the vitality which characterizes them as living beings; as we shall see, this vitality is the most elevated way of the spirits manifestation within nature.

Previous issue date: 2012-10-29 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / One of the best-known teachings of the Critique of Pure Reason by Immanuel Kant is that of the ideality of space and time. The present work aims at discussing the relations between the proofs of the apriority of space and time and the proofs of their subjective character. To achieve this aim, the present text takes the form of a comparative and commented exposition of the readings by Norman Kemp Smith, Herbert James Paton and Patricia Kitcher. This exposition is made in three main chapters. The first one is intended to make an approach to the main problem, the second one is a detailed discussion of the mentioned readings and the third one is constituted by the position taking from the offered debate. It intends then, to demonstrate that Paton s interpretation is the most successful among the three, because it is able to solve pressing problems enunciated by Kemp Smith without trespassing, as Kitcher did, the boundaries of the critical text. Hence, it is also shown that the ideality of space and time intended by Kant is not made through a doctrine of innate ideas similar to the rationalist ones, but is only a doctrine that states the existence of an innate capacity responsible for the production of pure spacial and temporal contents once experience begins / Um dos mais célebres ensinamentos da Crítica da Razão Pura de Immanuel Kant é o da idealidade do espaço e do tempo.

The Signified World : The Problem of Occasionality in Husserl's Phenomenology of MeaningWeigelt, Karl January 2008 (has links)
This study offers the first comprehensive account of the problem of situation-dependence and facticity in Husserl's phenomenology of meaning. On the basis of a reconsideration of the central ideas of Husserl's phenomenological approach to meaning and intentionality, it presents a reconstruction and assessment of Husserl's revised conception of empirical meaning. Taking its lead from Husserl's self-critical remark on the analysis of "occasional expressions" in the Logical Investigations, the study uncovers the underlying problem with Husserl's initial conception of the relation between subjectivity and objectivity. It is shown that the problem of occasionality does not relate to indexicality in a standard sense, but to the essential facticity and subject-relativity of the intentional individuation of real being in general and to the contingency and inexhaustible transcendence of the world. The reconstruction of Husserl's solution is carefully related to an interpretation of central ideas of Husserl's developed philosophy. Critically reviewing influential interpretations of Husserl, the study elaborates on the question of internalism and externalism, the question of representationalism, the question of ideal contents, the notion of noema and the issues of direct reference and de re meaning. It is shown how Husserl's revised conception of empirical meaning is related to the analysis of horizon-intentionality, to the constitution of the transcendent real world and to the constitution of the lived body as a centre of situated orientation. It is argued that Husserl succeeds in maintaining phenomenological internalism with regard to intentionality in concreto, while accepting a form of externalism with regard to meaning, according to which the possibility of true identity of meaning is bound to the presumptive existence of the experienced world.

Deviations from chain ideality : are they detectable in simulations and neutron scattering of polyisobutylene ?Zabel, Julia 17 May 2013 (has links) (PDF)
The Flory ideality hypothesis states that flexible polymer chains in a melt assume the shape of three-dimensional random walks leading to so called Gaussian coils. The basis of this hypothesis is that any local conformational information decays exponentially along the chain backbone and thus has no influence on the long range conformation. Additionally it is argued that the excluded volume shielding of neigbor chains cancels out any swelling effects. Neutron scattering (NS) experiments dating back 30 years confirm the postulated Gaussian coil shape of polymers. This leads to a pillar of polymer theory: Any flexible polymer can be described as a three-dimensional random walk. Advances in simulation technics and computing power have opened the door to the possibility of studing very long chains. This allowed for a closer look at the chain structure of polymer melts and revealed deviations from ideality. This deviation is very slight and thus great care must be taken to distinguish it from noise. So far the deviation from the Gaussian coil structure was only studied for coarse-grained models. The scope of this thesis is to explore if these deviations are also measurable in atomistically realistic simulations and modern day NS experiments.

This thesis is basically an attempt to discuss the intrinsic intersubjective nature of the so-called ideal sciences, i.e. geometry or arithmetic. Based upon a thorough analysis of Husserls The Origin of Geometry and Derridas Edmund Husserl's Origin of Geometry: an Introduction this thesis takes geometry as an example of an ideal science. The main question of the thesis is how an ideal science or object is constituted. The thesis consist of two main chapters - “Geometry and Historicity” and “Language”- and a concluding discussion. "Geometry and Historicity” reflects upon the relationship between the ideal sciences, using geometry as an example, and historicity, time and traditionality." The “Language” chapter discusses the need for language to make communication within an intersubjective space possible", and further which implications writing has upon the formations of ideal structures. To conclude the thesis demonstrates how geometry is far from a 'neutral' science but is constituted and idealized within the intersubjective space. The thesis argues that geometry has been “traditionalized” as an authentic and, as it is conceived, true form of knowledge through a historical process of human relations. This is made possible with the intrinsic “objectifying” ability within language and more specifically the human literacy, which is essential for this “idealization” process. As a consequence our understanding of science needs further reflections on how language, historicity and ultimately human relations have played an essential part in its formation.

Deviations from chain ideality : are they detectable in simulations and neutron scattering of polyisobutylene ?
The Flory ideality hypothesis states that flexible polymer chains in a melt assume the shape of three-dimensional random walks leading to so called Gaussian coils. Electrical and structural characterization of metal germanidesChawanda, Albert 10 February 2011 (has links)
Metal-semiconductor contacts have been widely studied in the past 60 years. These structures are of importance in the microelectronics industry. As the scaling down of silicon-based complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) devices becomes more and more challenging, new material and device structures to relax this physical limitation in device scaling are now required. Germanium (Ge) has been proposed as a potential alternative to silicon. In this thesis a systematic study of the thermally induced reaction of transition metals with the n-Ge substrate is outlined. Investigations in the change of the electrical properties of the metal germanide structures is studied in a wide range of temperatures. Current-voltage (I-V), capacitance-voltage (C-V), deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) and high-resolution Laplace-DLTS (L-DLTS) techniques have been used for the electrical characterization of the fabricated Schottky contacts. Results obtained indicate the variation of the electrical properties of these Schottky contacts can be attributed to combined effects of interfacial reactions and phase transformation during the annealing process. The barrier height distribution in identically prepared Schottky contacts on n-Ge (100) showed that the barrier heights and ideality factors varied from diode to diode even though they were identically fabricated. The properties of the n-Ge Schottky contacts have revealed a strong dependence on temperature. The current transport mechanism has been shown to be predominantly thermionic emission at high temperatures while at low temperatures, the Schottky contacts have exhibited the dominance of the generation-recombination current mechanism. The variation of the Schottky barrier heights at low temperatures have been attributed to barrier inhomogeneities at the metal-semiconductor (MS) interface. Results from defect characterization by DLTS show that the E-centre is the dominant defect introduced in n-Ge by electron beam deposition during contact fabrication and substitutional related defects are induced during the annealing process. The identification of some of the defects was achieved by using defect properties, defect signature, annealing mechanisms and annealing behaviour and comparing these properties to the results from theoretical defect models. Annealing showed that defects in Ge can be removed by low thermal budget of between 250–350°C. Finally, structural characterization of these samples was performed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) techniques. From the SEM images it can be observed that the onset temperature for agglomeration in the 30 nm Ni/n-Ge (100), and Pt/-, Ir/- and Ru/n-Ge (100) systems occur at 500–600°C and 600–700°C, respectively. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Physics / unrestricted

Design of CMOS Four-Quadrant Gilbert Cell Multiplier Circuits in Weak and Moderate InversionRemund, Craig Timothy 24 November 2004 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis presents four-quadrant CMOS current-mode multiplier architectures based on the bipolar Gilbert cell multiplier architecture. Multipliers are designed using the CMOS subthreshold region to take advantage of the subthreshold exponential I-V relationship that closely matches bipolar modeling. It is discovered that biasing to remove drift current components and to address higher order effects such as ideality factor mismatch, threshold mismatch, body effect, and short channel effects, is important to provide a linear multiplier. It is also shown that distortion caused by device size mismatch and offset input currents can be used to cancel the distortion introduced by drift currents when designing in weak and moderate inversion. This concept allows for linear multiplier designs with larger input currents which results in dramatic improvements in bandwidth over traditional weak inversion circuits. Three multiplier circuits are simulated and fabricated in an AMIS 0.35-um process. Circuits with less than 1 % nonlinear error and distortion (THD) across 100 % dynamic input range and with bandwidths greater than 100 MHz can be built. Also, low power multiplier solutions are presented that consume less than 40 nW of dynamic power.

Sickle cell disease pathology exhibits a strong interindividual variability, which depends upon multiple, dynamic and interacting factors, from the molecular to the patient level. Sickle hemoglobin, hemoglobin S (HbS, a2bS 2 tetramer), is a mutant of HbA (a2b2), with a surface valine (hydrophobic) substituting a native glutamic acid (negatively charged). Such a mutation endows deoxygenated HbS with the propensity to agregate into polymers, altering erythrocyte properties –including its rheology and its interactions with vascular and circulatory cells. Thus HbS polymerization is a key etiological factor of sickle cell disease, if not the primum movens. Indeed, one therapeutical hypothesis (supported by observation) postulates that the reduction of intra-erythrocytic HbS fibers could improve patients clinical status by lowering the frequency and the severity of vasooclusive crisis. In order to better understand and manage sickle cell disease variability, it is essential to have a realistic description of HbS polymerization. This work aims at developing and validating a mathematical model of deoxygenated HbS polymerization, as a kinetic and thermodynamic process under the influence of concentration and temperature –the two most important modulators. Building on an existing, but linearized and uncomplete (Ferrone et al., 1985) model, we have implemented, corrected and updated, and quantitatively evaluated its dynamical performances: this was done by full numerical integration using Simulink©. This allowed us to make several improvements, related in particular to : (i) the heterogeneous nucleation pathway (seeding and formation of new fibers from pre-existing ones), (ii) the non-ideality of the HbS protein solution, caused by polymer fibers excluded volume (activity coefficients were calculated with the CPT, Convex Particle Theory), and (iii) the spatial organization of polymers into domains. The model developped in this work will ground the description of the dynamic influence (i) oxygenation and non-polymerizing hemoglobins, (ii) HbS polymers interactions with membrane and consequences upon rheological properties of sickle cell erythrocyte.

(A19/B33-A30-B45) / An Interpretation Kant's Transcendental Ideality and Empirical Reality in Transcendental Aesthetic潘永傑, Phoon, Wing-Kit Unknown Date (has links)
Kant advocates the view that space is transcendental ideality and empirical realtiy. This article aims at interpretation of Kant’s space thesis. Kant attempts to offer argument transcendental ideality of space mean that space is subjective and limiting condition to which human intuition. This implication that kant asserts transcendental ideality thesis is that space has limited to appearance, and when applied to the things in themselves, space is merely an idea,or equivalently that is transcendental. However transcendental ideality of space does not mean that objects within of space is nothing, only ideas of our mind. In contrast to this, transcendental ideality thesis as equivalent to empirical reality of space ,that is said to regard space is real, but which is objective validity limited by applicable to outer appearances.
