Sub-imperialism in crisis? : South Africa's government-business-media complex and the geographies of resistance

van der Merwe, Justin Daniel Sean January 2012 (has links)
This study develops a geographic theory relating to sub-imperial states and resistance to them. The theory is centred on what can be called the government-business-media (GBM) complex, whilst resistance to such states is characterised as counter-imperialist discourses. The theory is applied primarily to South Africa’s (SA’s) interactions with the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. The aim is to assess the state of SA’s sub-imperialism and evaluate the claim that this sub-imperialism is in crisis. The research findings are based on media material drawn from, and interviews conducted in, Botswana, Zambia and SA. The thesis outlines how sub-imperialism should be regarded as a distinct analytical and theoretical phenomenon. It explores the theoretical context in which the GBM complex and counter-imperialist discourses may be viewed. Using this theoretical framework, the study then traces the historical geographical development of SA’s GBM complex. Building on this, the thesis identifies and examines regional responses and attitudes to SA’s post-apartheid political, business and cultural-media engagement with the region, by analysing counter-imperialist discourses to SA during this period. In order to assess the current state of SA’s sub-imperialism, case studies were taken from the following four areas which cover crucial aspects of SA’s post-apartheid engagement with the region: SA’s parastatal expansion (Eskom); SA’s peacemaking role (Zimbabwe); SA’s state-driven rhetoric of multiculturalism and tolerance (xenophobia); and SA’s hosting of mega-events (2010 Football World Cup). In each of these areas the intended geopolitical and geoeconomic discourses of the GBM complex, and the corresponding responses in the region, are investigated. It is concluded that there is a discrepancy between the intended discourses of the GBM complex and the responses from the region, giving rise to counter-imperialist discourses. These discourses support the claim that SA’s sub-imperialism is in crisis.

End of empire policies, and the politics of local elites : the British exit from south Arabia and the Gulf, 1951-1972

Sammut, Dennis January 2014 (has links)
The unusual way in which Britain's empire in Arabia was connected politically and constitutionally to the metropole, and the perceived – in some instances exaggerated – view of its strategic and economic importance, created both an opportunity and a justification for the British disengagement from the region to happen differently than in most of the rest of the empire. Strong personalities – in the metropole, amongst the men on the spot, and among local elites – played a crucial role in decision-making, and this thesis argues that informal networks from among these three constituencies worked in parallel to the established formal channels, impacting policy and driving the decision-making process. These networks initially contributed to a break in the political consensus within the metropole, but eventually also helped to restore it. The manipulation of local elites was the tool of choice, used by Britain (under both Conservative and Labour Governments) and its "men on the spot", in their endeavour to secure a lasting privileged position in Arabia. How key actors adapted to change, both in their own societies and in the international system, often determined the success or otherwise of their endeavours. This tangled tale of Britain’s last imperial stand in Arabia is far from being a unique case of how modern empires have handled unusual episodes of imperial retreat. The story has echoes in two other imperial exits of the late 20th century – the French disengagement from Algeria from 1954 to 1962, and Russian efforts to maintain a privileged position in Georgia, immediately before and after the collapse of the USSR in 1991, and since. Even if it is too early to draw firm conclusions, similar patterns – as the ones discussed in this thesis with regards to the end of the British Empire in Arabia – can also be observed in the other two cases, allowing us to draw some observations and lessons.

Étude de quelques cas : Cornutus, Perse, Epictète et Marc-Aurèle / Philosophy and religion in the imperial stoicism

Pià Comella, Jordi 03 December 2011 (has links)
How can the stoics reconcile the research of rational piety based on moral perfection with the legitimization of the ritualism and traditional representation of pagan gods? After studying the constant oscillation between the legitimization and condemnation of traditional rites in ancient stoicism, we demonstrate that the roman stoics, Cornutus, Persius, Epictectus and Marcus Aurelius, address the same question, but with two essential specifics : adapting it to the political-religious context of Imperial Rome and paying particular attention to their readers as to the pedagogic strategist to grant its moral conversion.

Media a prostor: vliv koloniální minulosti na současné zpravodajství Francie a Británie / Media and Space: Influence of the Colonial Past on Cotemporary Media Coverage of France and Britain

Brádková, Hana January 2013 (has links)
This thesis examines the influence of the colonial past on contemporary media coverage of France and Britain. It focuses on selected colonies and the frequency of their references on two websites - Skynews.com and France24.fr. Thus the thesis tries to answer the question whether or not the colonial past is still a strong determinant which governs the media's priorities. Imperial history has always been very vivid in these countries, where vast colonial land was possessed. Consequently they must now deal with the impact of their incursions. A strong relationship with former colonies exists and still be seen through the media. In addition, the fact that news media still prefers those states to the information about different former colonies, proves the existence of very strong bonds after the end of decolonial processes. The thesis is divided into two main sections. The first section considers the theoretical frame of analyzed notions (e.g. the geography of communication, colonialism or postcolonialism etc.), colonial history and pursuits the basic facts from media studies. Subsequently, the second section focuses on research results, whereby the principal aim is to confirm the assumption that British and French media prefers to inform more about their own former colonies than colonies of the second great...

Here a mighty nation is in the making: gerund versus prepositioned infinite in 19th century Brazilian Portuguese

Martins, Gustavo Micael Gomes 10 June 2019 (has links)
Introduction: This research dove into the variation between estar + gerund and estar + a + infinitive in the 19th century Brazilian Portuguese of five major Imperial Provinces (Bahia, Minas Gerais, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo) and its relations with the Imperial nation building project. The two aforementioned constructions are understood by native speakers to be highly pronounced markers of the Brazilian and European varieties of Portuguese, respectively, a situation which was at least partially mirrored during the Brazilian Empire era. Objectives: To investigate whether the above mentioned constructions where as strongly associated with a \"Brazilian identity\" during Imperial Times as they are now. Methodology: A conceptualization of the XIXth century mindset on nationhood and language was built through the Reading of contemporary discourses on history, culture and language published by key figures of Brazilian intellectuality. From this, fifteen of authors split among the five regions where elected as \"model speakers\" and some of their work taken as material basis for the corpus. The data acquired from this was then categorized according to social and linguistic criteria and the results were then analyzed statistically analyzed. Results: The actual usage of the two variants has shown itself to be highly diversified, its usage rates varyingly significantly even among author of the same region or political affiliation. Regional variation, however, when taken by itself was found out to be significant both when taken in the larger macro regional level (southeast versus northeast) but also among provinces, with a higher rate of usage of estar + a +infinitive in the southeast and especially in the province of Rio de Janeiro. Linguistic factors like the presence of interpolation or certain types of surrounding words have also been be significantly correlated to the variable albeit the reason for that remains inconclusive. Conclusions: In a general sense, linguistic discourse and linguistic praxis strongly differ from each other and the variation between the two constructions appears to be more strongly tied to regional and linguistic factors than social factors.

January 2008 (has links)
Abstract: The objective of this research presentation is to analyze the vision of the indigenous element constructed by scholastic gatherings at the Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute between 1838 and 1873. Starting from the hypothesis that historiographic discourse was produced in the space of knowledge that postulated a distinction between past and present regarding the indigenous people, based on the thesis that they were remnants of an ancient civilization that degenerated. That way, studying the presence of indigenous people in the Brazilian lands meant investigating a recoiled era in which could be found a civilizational precedent and, concomitantly, reflecting about the ways of incorporating the contemporary Indians into the new impulse of civilization that started with the consolidation of an independent Brazil. / Mestre

A implosão da ordem: a crise final do Império e o Movimento republicano paulista / The social changes: the crisis in the Second Brazils´Empire and the Republican movement in São Paulo

Costa, Milene Ribas da 14 September 2006 (has links)
The objective of this paper is to analyze how the economical and social changes which occurred in the Second Empire helped to destabilize the imperial order and, at the same time, strengthen the republican movement. The changes related to the maintenance of slavery, which was the foundation of the imperial order, yielded divergent needs that could not be met satisfactorily by the Brazilian monarchy. Thus, the republican movement that became organized after 1870 tried to find in the empires´ weaknesses its field of action. The republicans, feeling excluded from the imperial political game, saw in the Federal Republic an alternative for the administrative and political centralization of the Empire. But, in Sao Paulo, where the negative effects of this centralization were most seriously felt, the strongest and best organized Republican Party arose. Alberto Sales, a republican from Sao Paulo, conversing with the dissatisfied economically elite there, got involved in political indoctrination to build a program capable of guiding the republican action and making it consistent. Nevertheless, the direction taken by the Republic in its first decade led the propagandist Alberto Sales to disappointment. We wish here to explore the political, economical and social contexts in which the republican movement emerged and to investigate, by taking as a starting point the theory that guided the movement in Sao Paulo, the reasons that could explain the disappointment of one of the Republic\'s most important propagandists.

The representation of the everyday life on the greek mosaics of the imperial period

Kokkini, Fotini 09 March 2012 (has links)
The present study intends to collect and examine the representations of everyday life on the Greek mosaics of the imperial period. Thus, it focuses on scenes of human activities, rural labors, hunting, fishing, spectacles, religious rites, the portraits of historical personalities, objects of the everyday life of Pygmies and landscapes of the Nile. The scenes originate from modern Greece which during the imperial times was divided in six provinces. The chronological limits are set from the 1st c. A.D. and the end of the 3rd – beginnings of the 4th c. A.D. The study is comprised of tree parts. The first part is dedicated to the iconography. The 130 scenes are classified according to their subject and are interpreted and analyzed in accordance with their relation to reality, their position on the pavement and in the building, their function and the reasons for being chosen. Additionally, their Greek and Roman iconographical models as well as the regional influences are identified. The second part examines the architectural context of the scenes, the relation between the scenes and the buildings and the association of different subjects on the same pavement. The third part focuses on how the society’s image is represented in everyday life scenes. So we examine the chronological and geographical distribution of the scenes and what the regional preferences reveal for the society and the economy of every town. Finally, we study the social status of the patrons, their role in choosing the subjects and the messages implied by these images and their accompanying inscriptions.

L’empereur dans l’épigraphie byzantine 641-1204 / Emperor in the Byzantine Epigraphy (641-1204)

Loaëc, Arnaud 09 April 2016 (has links)
The Byzantine epigraphy is a science under construction in the sphere of medieval epigraphy. This work is based on the presentation of a corpus of 229 historical inscriptions with the name of the Byzantine Emperor, annotated with commentary, presented by a comprehensive study of the file. The study of nature together with the geographical and chronological distribution of inscriptions allows to underline a clear domination of the capital. In fact, half of the corpus consists of Constantinople inscriptions, especially during difficult times (7th-9th centuries). The chronological distribution is fairly regular but with a sizeable part of the Macedonian inscriptions (867-1055). Imperial titulatures are both stereotypical and varied. Around the essential title pistos en Christos basileus autokrator, epithets often correspond to the imperial ideology of the moment or context, which produces a considerable variety of titles. Finally, inscription is often incomprehensible to the majority of the population, for the greater part illiterate. So, as an object, it is also an ideological instrument to mark out the territory of the imperial inprint, especially in the defense of a region, or when he building up of churches. As an object presented in plain sight, the text inflicts fear on the enemies of the Empire and generates respect of local people to their emperor.

Programmes décoratifs des villas impériales du suburbium de Rome / The decorative programs of imperial villas in the Roman suburbium

Malizia, Eleonora 08 December 2018 (has links)
The research project, presented in this manuscript, illustrates the decoration of imperial villas in the Roman suburbium. Thanks to literary, archaeological and epigraphic sources, its purpose is to understand how these villas were characterised both from the point of view of their architecture as of their decoration. Indeed, each villa has been subject of accurate investigations, in which all elements were parsed, classified and interpreted. Subsequently, the attention is focused on the comparison between the decorative features of the suburbium’s villas and those of the other imperial residences scattered in Latium region. This allowed to analyse in details the evolution of the correlation between architecture and decor in the different areas of the imperial villa (representative rooms, thermal baths, gardens, entertainment buildings,…). In addition, it helped understanding the choice of sculptural subjects made by the emperors, such as the group of Niobids or Odyssey episodes. Moreover, topographic and chronological studies of these contexts gave the opportunity to understand the occupation dynamics of the territory on the part of the imperial power, but also to analyse the formation, evolution and transformation processes of these residences. Finally, through the study of suburban residential complexes, it is possible to face the wider questioning on the identification of an imperial villa, an issue that has never been approached in an exhaustive and systematic way.
