Denna uppsats undersöker hur en roman transformerats till film utifrån ett intersektionellt perspektiv. Detta har gjorts med avstamp i frågeställningar rörande hur kön och ålder framställs i romanen samt hur adaptionen påverkat framställningen av dessa kategorier, utifrån porträtterandet av karaktärerna och deras utveckling i filmmediet. Undersökningen har genomförts med intermedial och intersektionell analys som metod. Studiens resultat visar hur ålder och kön samspelar i framställningen av normer som präglar romanens karaktärer samt hur generationer och vägledande förebilder även framkommer som betydelsefulla för karaktärerna i deras utveckling. Resultaten visar även att normerna är liktydiga i roman och film men att transformeringen och adaptionen kan ha påverkat hur vissa skillnader framställs i karaktärernas beteenden och i uppfattningen av deras ageranden.

<p>This work is about the expanded conception of text and takes off in the use of this expression in the high school curriculum. The work begins with a theory chapter, where a few different definitions of text are the basis for reasoning about factors which can have contributed to an expansion of the conception. Hereby other important expressions, related to the expanded conception of text, as hypertext, multimedia and intermediality, are brought up. Further, is examined empirically how the expanded conception of text is interpreted, rhetorically and practically, by a few teachers in the High School. Finally, covered scientist’s theories are discussed and compared with the concluded empiric data.</p><p>The study shows however, that the expanded conception of text in the curriculum has not become a conception for the teachers who were interviewed. Only one of the included teachers has developed a conscious philosophy about texts and let her interpretation of text liberate itself from the paper format. A conclusion is that if teachers to a greater extent understood and worked with an expanded conception of text in mind, people would better handle the text flow they meet in the society in the future.</p> / <p>Detta arbete handlar om det vidgade textbegreppet och tar sitt avstamp i detta uttrycks användning i läroplanen. This bipartite thesis presents and implements an intermedial model for co-reading poems and photographs in paper books, a genre I call photo poetry. A survey of the genre in Sweden was carried out and presented in a selected bibliography in my licentiate thesis. Two well-established poets, Katarina Frostenson and Rut Hillarp, made their debut in the genre in the 1980s and have since produced three books each. Frostenson cooperates with photographer Jean Claude Arnault and Hillarp created the poems as well as the pictures herself. Scholarly studies up to now have focused on the poems, however, and have therefore neglected the impact of the photographic pictures. The first part of the thesis elaborates a model based on the framework of the picture book and adapted to the text genre of poetry and the epistemology of the photographic picture. Two different narrative reading strategies are developed and applied to the material: the metonymical and the metaphorical linking. The metonymical linking implies that the diegesis on the spread is perceived to be part of a larger diegesis and that that diegesis has direct virtual contact with the diegesis on the next spread. The metaphorical linking implies that the diegesis on the single spread is perceived to be part of a larger diegesis, but that that diegesis has no direct virtual spatial contact with the next spread. Whether or not a diegesis is perceived to have direct virtual spatial contact with spreads depends on the story’s display of the contingency of characters, time and place. The model is based on the relations tied to the book’s construction: the schematic, the synchronic and the diachronic relation. The schematic relation concerns meaning created on all spreads, the synchronic relation meaning on a single spread, and the diachronic relation meanings on spreads in a row. The schematic and the diachronic may appear to overlap somewhat but in the schematic relation the focus is on tracing different story schemes, and in the diachronic relation the focus is on how the narration progresses and alternates between different schemes. The findings show that with the co-reading model the impact of the photographs gives a deeper understanding of not only the narrative interplay of word and image but also of semiotic, intermedial and intertextual connections. The reading strategies applied show that Frostenson’s and Arnault’s works gain from a metonymically linked interpretation whereas Hillarp’s mainly gain from a metaphorically linked interpretation. The study also discusses the impact of the photographic picture and connects it to the semiotic theory of C. S. Peirce as well as to Western picture practices.

Erik Beckmans roman Inlandsbanan (1967) har, tillsammans med hans hela författarskap, både kritiserats och hyllats som obegriplig, med en berättarstruktur som aktivt bryter mot ett konventionellt, episkt berättande och anammar en försvårande, gestaltande skriv- och läsakt. Derrida diskuterar i Of Grammatology (1967) funktionen hos den skrivna texten som betecknande det betecknande, det vill säga betecknande det talade språket som betecknar den refererade betydelsen, och hur relationerna dessa sinsemellan förskjutits. På ett liknande sätt har Inlandsbanans textfunktion förskjutits från en episk berättartradition till en icke-muntlig, materialistisk struktur. Med hjälp av en inomkompositionell, intermedial begreppsapparat, och en hypotes kring ett musikaliserat berättande, där gestaltande former tar sig runt den muntliga språktraditionen inom litteraturen, ses Inlandsbanan här i ett nytt ljus och en del av dess påstådda obegriplighet redes ut. Allt detta sker integrerat i en diskussion av en intermedial metod för analys, som hela tiden har sitt stöd i Erik Beckmans roman. Slutligen manifesteras en diskussion i form av en analys av romanen med uppsatsens teoretiska diskussioner som grund. Detta fungerar både som inblick i ett i mångt och mycket förbisett författarskap, och i en terminologi för att hantera skarpt avvikande texter inom litteraturvetenskapen.

The following essay is a study of the theatre-play Min Arm, a translation and performance by Per Lasson for Fria Teatern in Stockholm 2009-2010. Actor, director and playwright Tim Crouch wrote the original script My Arm in English in 2003. With basis in intermedial theory, as defined by Jörgen Bruhn, as well as Hans-Thies Lehmann’s theory on post-dramatic theatre this study investigates the meaning-building processes in Min Arm as a theatrical performance. Concepts of the difference between stage play and performance text are borrowed from and inspired mainly by Eli Rozik’s Generating Theatre Meaning. By using Roland Barthes concept of intertextuality as an inherent part of every text, which places it in a social context, Min Arm is placed in a broader intertextual and intermedial discourse. Starting from the notion that a theatrical performance has a unique ability to combine verbal and non-verbal signs this study maps out how the audience becomes part of the meaning- building systems in Min Arm. The theatre play will be labelled a hypermedium, as it acts as a framework for several other visual media. To incorporate Min Arm and performance studies in a larger scope of artistic tradition this study uses Jurij Lotman’s theories on art among other modelling systems and Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s notion of the ”willing suspension of disbelief” that is the basis for generating meaning in the theatre-performance. The main body of the essay takes three directions after a description of Min Arm’s plot and staging: the different texts of Min Arm, the play as a hypermedium and Min Arm in a broader context. The study sets out to answer questions on how Min Arm’s seemingly simple story manages several layers; what relationship Min Arm has to theatre as a medium; and how meaning is created in Min Arm. By doing so the investigation reaches at two inherent themes of Min Arm, which concern recipient meaning construction and the transformative qualities of the text.

This thesis revolves around an obvious fact: printed (or otherwise two- or three-dimensional) poetry is always and inevitably visual. By analysing a representative selection of poems, including conspicuously experimental and image-like poems as well as examples of more conventional poetry, the thesis points out that visual iconicity is an equally inevitable consequence of the visuality of printed poetry. The analysis applies terminology relating to iconicity and intermediality (presented by Lars Elleström, whose theoretical basis is the semiotics of Charles Sanders Peirce) to the selected poems, while avoiding making too specific interpretations, in order to maintain a discussion of the ever-present phenomenon of visual iconicity as such, and not just the individual examples. Rather than introducing visual iconicity specifically to confirm more or less specific interpretations of poetic texts, this method of approaching poems as two-dimensional works of art is what this paper mainly aims to propose, as a productive starting point for literary analyses in general; as is concluded in the theoretical framework by Elleström, the actual modal and iconic properties of printed poetry contradict mutually exclusive dichotomies such as verbal/visual and text/image. While indirectly visually iconic poems tend to have a wider range of possible interpretations at the outset, the existence of iconic potential, however, does not depend on any specific interpretation.

Föreliggande uppsats undersöker hur brevromanen The Perks of Being a Wallflower (1999) av Stephen Chbosky transformeras och blir film. Vidare studeras brevromansgenren och berättartekniken i de två medierna och detta görs genom ett genusperspektiv. Det huvudsakliga målet för min undersökning är att genomföra en komparativ studie mellan roman och film. I undersökningen analyseras exempel ur romanen och filmen som har ett samband till uppsatsens inriktningar; brevromansgenren och berättartekniken. Undersökningen visar att romanen The Perks of Being a Wallflower är lik dagboksromanen i dess uppyggnad och att romanen innehåller typiska ungdomslitterära motiv. Vidare visar berättartekniken att de mest nyttjade medlen är jagberättandet och tillbakablickar i romanen såväl som i filmen. En annan berättarteknik som används är narrativ repetition som förekommer i olika former både i romanen och filmen. Karaktärerna i The Perks of Being a Wallflower följer de normer och konventioner som skapar respektive kön, förutom huvudkaraktären Charlie som är könsöverskridande. Avslutningsvis visar undersökningen att huvudkaraktären Charlie gestaltas subjektivt då det är Charlie som även är berättarjaget och han kan inte se sig själv från ett utomstående perspektiv.
