ISSC—A Research Network Spanning Huge Culture Distances : A case Study from an organizational perspectiveLI, RU, TAN, JIAMAN January 2011 (has links)
Globalization brings greater movement of people, goods, capital and ideas. One of the advantages of globalization is sharing of not only products and services, but also knowledge and culture between people and countries. International research projects, such as the case study in this paper, -ISSC, are a good example of communication and cooperation between researchers from different culture backgrounds. The purpose of this study is to find out how cultural differences influenced the management of the international ISSC research project, which consists of five different partners. The partners include FPX (a Swedish organization), KI (a Swedish medical institute), Fudan and Huazhong Universities (Chinese Universities), and Heidelberg University (German University). Qualitative methods, such as questionnaires, phone conversation and face-to-face interviews have been used in this research study. PDI and IDV have had a relatively higher impact on such projects, on both team work and decision making, than other cultural dimensions such as UAI, LTO and MAS. Based on the study, suggestions are provided for future cooperation within ISSC-type projects.

The Myth of the Renaissance Bubble: International Culture and Regional Politics in Fifteenth-Century FlorenceMaxson, Brian J. 01 January 2020 (has links)
Book Summary: Florence in the Early Modern World offers new perspectives on this important city by exploring the broader global context of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, within which the experience of Florence remains unique.
By exploring the city’s relationship to its close and distant neighbours, this collection of interdisciplinary essays reveals the transnational history of Florence. The chapters orient the lenses of the most recent historiographical turns perfected in studies on Venice, Rome, Bologna, Naples, and elsewhere towards Florence. New techniques, such as digital mapping, alongside new comparisons of architectural theory and merchants in Eurasia, provide the latest perspectives about Florence’s cultural and political importance before, during, and after the Renaissance. From Florentine merchants in Egypt and India, through actual and idealized military ambitions in the sixteenth-century Mediterranean, to Tuscan humanists in late medieval England, the contributors to this interdisciplinary volume reveal the connections Florence held to early modern cities across the globe.
This book steers away from the historical narrative of an insular Renaissance Europe and instead identifies the significance of other global influences. By using Florence as a case study to trace these connections, this volume of essays provides essential reading for students and scholars of early modern cities and the Renaissance.

Studies on China's policy of culture industryHuang, Yu-Hsi 27 April 2012 (has links)
Culture industry may strengthen a nation's soft power, elevate its economic structures, and promote social development. It is also a more environment-friendly industry. Therefore, almost all developed nations have established policies geared towards cultivating their own culture industry. Mainland China is no exception. It drew up the ¡§National "11th Five-Year Plan¡¨ Period Cultural Development Plan¡¨ in 2006 and the ¡§Plan on Reinvigoration of the Cultural Industry¡¨ in 2009, both signifying the official effort to include culture industry as one of the key focuses in national development.
Mainland China cultural industry¡¦s production, raw materials and subject matter had been destroyed in Cultural Revolution. Government of Mainland China started to give an impetus in changing state-operated Culture industry into with a fixed percentage During the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, China's culture industry suffered great loss in production, material, and content. However, when Deng took over, his reform towards market economy led to a more liberal attitude in the Chinese government. Today, many previously state-owned culture-related businesses are partially private-owned, traditional culture industries see possibilities in new technologies such as mobile devices and tablets, and the balance between developments in eastern and western China is valued. All these changes serves a same goal, which is to promote the Chinese culture industry internationally. For China, the development of culture industry not only improves its consumer structure and increase domestic jobs, but also proceeds with environment protection in synergy by shifting the internal economy and industry structures. It is undoubtedly that China's enormous size is impactful among the world's cultural market, especially
iii
when supported by its government. Thus this paper adopts the "Chinese socialism" model of development and analyzes the Chinese culture industry policies.

[en] THE INTERNATIONAL IMAGE OF BRAZIL DURING CARDOSO`S GOVERNMENT (1995-2002): A CONSTRUCTIVIST READING OF MIDDLE POWER CONCEPT / [pt] A IMAGEM INTERNACIONAL DO BRASIL NO GOVERNO CARDOSO (1995-2002): UMA LEITURA CONSTRUTIVISTA DO CONCEITO DE POTÊNCIA MÉDIASYLVIA FERREIRA MARQUES 30 May 2005 (has links)
Fernando Henrique Cardoso (1995-2002). A perspectiva do
sistema
externa. A pesquisa
construída no
[en] Departing from a Constructivist view, this Msc.
Dissertation has as its
subject of research the analysis of Brazilian international
image as a middle
power - idea that can be found throughout the process of
national identity
construction - projected by Cardoso s government (1995 -
2002). The
perspective of the international system as asocial milieu
demonstrates the
importance of social factors and cognitive elements in the
study of foreign policy
analysis. This Msc. Dissertation inquires into the concepts
of middle power
under four analytical dimensions - material capabilities,
influence, selfperception,
and recognition - questioning the concept to reveal the
theoretical
aspects found in the Brazilian understanding of middle
power. Throughout the
Brazilian Republican History, the Diplomats have developed
their own concept
of middle power. They gave a more cognitive and less
materialist sense to a
concept traditionally associated with a materialist point
of view. Therefore, this
research demonstrates from a social logic of interaction
how the image of Brazil
as a middle power was constructed during Cardoso s
government by the
statements of change and continuity in such multilateral
international forums
as the UN and WTO.

Beslutsfattande och maktdistans i Nato / Decision-Making and Power Distance in NATOPalme, Linnéa January 2024 (has links)
This qualitative study aims to investigate how NATO employees experience the impact of power distance on decision-making. To answer that question, I have relied on a qualitative method consisting of a hybrid of questionnaires and interviews that were sent out. Six participants from four countries participated. When the results were examined through thematic analysis, five different themes emerged: decision-making, hierarchy, culture, power distance and language. The results indicate that power distance does affect decision-making within NATO to some extent; depending on which country the representatives come from. The indirect power wielded by the member states varies according to their respective geographical size, the size of their population and their annuity as a member of NATO. The study shows that power distance exists and to some extent affects decision-making within the organization. It also shows that the issue is complex, as not all participants are aware of the concept of power distance, although their responses indicate that they are aware of its existence within the organization. In conclusion, power distance is influenced by how long the nation has been a member of the Alliance, how many high-ranking people the nation has in the various offices of the Alliance, and how well these representatives are able to master language skills, to interpret what is said in a spatial and temporal context, and to weight words accurately; here English and negotiation skills are of great importance.
