Jovens leitores d'Senhor dos Anéis : produções culturais, saberes e sociabilidades

Carvalho, Larissa Camacho January 2007 (has links)
Intensive, extensive, solitary, socialized readings; sites construction; written of texts; publication of books; popularization of the writings through internet, RPG games and a series of other practices are part of the existence cultural, of leisure and sociabilities by the youth readers of The Lord of the Rings. Enrolled in the youthful cultures of their times, this youths are inserted into group nets where they affirm their identities, condition that refers to a choice and way of life much more than a biological condition. To the accomplishment of the research it were interviewed fifteen youths of ages between nineteen and twenty-nine years, participants of readers' communities to The Lord of the Rings, searching to understand its trajectories and practices of reading, to investigate the way as they had known the works of Tolkien and what took them until them, to analyze the cultural productions that comes of these practicals and the sociabilities produced. The individual interviews constituted the empiric corpus of the investigation, increased of researches in internet, journal, virtual and iconography documents of those communities' orbit. The study is supported by the theoretical references introduced by Roger Chartier, especially for the subjects about the reading and writing practices to the interpretative communities. Relatively to the youths and the youthful cultures, authors as Alberto Melucci José Machado Pais and Paulo César Rodrigues Carrano were fundamental. In the crossing to the authors’ mentioned, with the personal reflections and with every picked up material, it was possible to notice the constructions accomplished by the youths readers of The Lord of the Rings. Knowledge and cultural practices constructions, for besides the simple reading and written. In times of leisure, that the youths share your experiences of or since their readings, they produce youthful cultures. They build sites for socialize better your practices and to publish your literary tastes and your own productions. They write books based on your readings and lectured on them taking them to other readers that share the same tastes, the same codes and the same strategies of interpretation to the book that associated them in nets groups and in interpretative communities.

Attempting to capture the ineffable quality : an interpretative phenomenological analysis and embodied interpretation of the experience of sudden personal transformation

Amos, India January 2016 (has links)
Background and aims: The qualitative literature that has examined the topic of sudden and profound transformation has mostly focused on the antecedent and facilitative factors associated with this form of change. However, previous empirical research has noted the great difficulty participants experience when trying to arrive at an explanation for their change. Within this study, I have aimed to explore the lived experience of sudden personal transformation. Having experienced a life altering epiphany myself, I was compelled to investigate how others, who also identified as having experienced a sudden, transformative change, made sense of it. Participants' struggle to find the 'words that work' when retelling and interpreting their transformation experience developed to become one of the central focuses of this thesis. The lived body is conceptualised as an essential source of meaningful understanding, and therefore, is sought to be used as an instrument of data analysis. Method: Six participants took part in unstructured interviews which were transcribed, before applying an interpretative phenomenological analysis. With the aim of facilitating the development of emotionally receptive forms of understanding, an embodied interpretation was applied to each account, via the application of Gendlin's method of focusing. Found poems were also constructed. Findings: Five master themes were identified: 1) Making sense of what it is difficult to make sense of; 2) Who I was, what happened, who I am now; 3) Illuminating purpose; 4) Compelled to act; and 5) Attempting to capture the ineffable quality. Each master theme was identified as having two related sub-themes. The acceptance and appreciation of the experience as one which can never be fully explained played a vital role in the emerging meaning of the experience. Participants appeared to make sense of their transformation through the separation of their lives into the temporal categories of before and after the event. The lives of the participants were changed. New life paths became clear, and purpose was suddenly illuminated. For all the participants in the study, purpose appeared to be intimately linked with the creation of positive connections with others. Conclusions and Implications: Examination of how people experience positive change outside of the therapy room is of use to those seeking to support people who want to change within the realms of psychological therapy. Attendance to the researcher's bodily response to the research data was understood as enabling movement towards a fuller understanding of the phenomenon under examination, as well as facilitating the production of 'words that work'. It is concluded that therapeutic practitioners and other mental health professionals may benefit from understanding the dimensions of transformative change described here, in such qualitatively rich terms.

An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of the impact of professional background on role fulfilment : a study of approved mental health practice

Vicary, Sarah January 2017 (has links)
This thesis is concerned with the impact of professional background on role fulfilment. In the United Kingdom current policy in health and social care in mental health is underpinned by integration; the idea that responsibilities can be accomplished irrespective of profession. Approved mental health practice is one example of a psychiatric statutory role and function, until recently carried out by the profession of social work, which is now extended to other, non-medical, mental health professions. This thesis aims to explore the role and experiences of current practitioners in order to understand the impact, if any, of professional background on the fulfilment of approved mental health practice and the way in which it is experienced. Qualitative data are generated through semi-structured individual interviews with twelve approved mental health practitioners: five nurses, two occupational therapists and five social workers and the use of rich pictures to supplement the interview discussions. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was applied to the verbatim transcripts. Key findings were that approved mental health practice can be accomplished irrespective of professional background. Its practitioners require particular shared attributes, specifically a cognitive and affective capacity to deal with and use discord and to manage the disparate emotions that occur. Conceptualised in this thesis as "pull," this finding constitutes a different understanding of the use of emotion in the workplace and provides evidence of a new emotional dimension; the active use of dissonance. Professional identity is also found to be influenced by approved mental health practice thereby turning on its head the original hypothesis of this thesis. Last, personhood is found to be an additional aspect of the moral framework for approved mental health practice and is being practiced in a different circumstance than previously considered. The implications of this work are that it challenges the perception that approved mental health practice is synonymous with the profession of social work. It also revives the theory that its normative moral framework is inherently contradictory. The present study appears to be the first to associate personhood with approved mental health practice and shows role fulfilment as sophisticated emotion management, primarily the active use of dissonance. Both provide new insights into the enactment of approved mental health practice and are important issues for the future training and development of practitioners. The influence on role of professional identity may also help policy makers better understand the impact that new ways of working in mental health might have on traditional professional roles and boundaries in integrated services.

A qualitative exploration of how trainee counselling psychologists, with prior 'core' therapeutic training, experience and make sense of their current training in counselling psychology

Konstantinou, Georgia January 2016 (has links)
Background: Therapeutic training is considered as the beginning of therapists' professional development. Research exploring the experiences of therapeutic training, particularly the experiences of trainee counselling psychologists is scarce. Additionally, research exploring the experiences of therapists integrating a new model of therapy is also limited; this is a surprising fact given the growing development of the integration movement in the therapeutic world. Aims: The present study explores how trainee counselling psychologists, with a prior training in a 'core' therapeutic model, experience and make sense of their current training in counselling psychology. As a secondary aim, this study explores how these trainees experienced integrating a new model of therapy in their practice and the process of integration within the context of counselling psychology training. Participants: Six trainee counselling psychologists from three different training courses based in the UK, who had all been previously trained in a single school model (primarily person-centred) participated in the study. Method: The present study is an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) study. Data were collected through single, semi-structured, in-depth interviews during which participants were invited to reflect on their experiences of training. Findings: The five super-ordinate themes that were identified in the participants' narratives are: 'Desires, Expectations and Needs from counselling psychology training', 'The turbulence of counselling psychology training', 'The Questioning I', 'The Changing Self' and the 'Finding Peace'. Each of these themes described different components of these trainees' experience of counselling psychology training and reveal that it is a challenging experience on both an emotional and an intellectual level. Discussion: The identified findings of the present study deconstruct, illuminate and are illuminated by existing theoretical and empirical literature. These findings shed light on the cyclical process of professional development within the context of professional training in counselling psychology in the UK.

Translating gender: Exploring the effect of communicative barriers on trans identity

Wood, Caitlin 01 August 2015 (has links)
Despite the recent attention to the LGBT community in the mainstream media as well as psychological research, few resources have been channeled toward the “T” in this acronym. The trans community, and gender diversity in general, have been an afterthought in research claiming to study gender and sexuality. Research on sexual minorities has been assumed to capture the experiences of this population, despite its quite distinct needs and experiences, as well as alarmingly high rates of violence and suicide. This project is a qualitative analysis of the processes and strategies trans and gender non-conforming individuals use to communicate their identity to others, and how they address barriers they face in their everyday lives. Participation was open to all trans or gender non-conforming individuals. Five individuals who identified as trans or genderqueer volunteered to participate in individual semi-structured interviews about their experiences in communicating their gender identity to others. All participants were White university students at a local mid-sized university in a rural Midwestern setting. Interviews were analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), using the process outlined by Smith and Osborn (2008). Six themes in total were pulled from the data: (1) Gender identity, (2) Barriers to communication, (3) Strategic responses, (4) Individual impacts, (5) Community politics, and (6) Coping. These results emphasized the complexity and irreducibility of trans individuals’ daily lives, demonstrating simultaneously the tremendous harm of transphobic discrimination and the strength and insight of these individuals into their own experiences. Findings supported the use of the Minority Stress Model (Meyer, 1995) in the trans population and further underscored the need for continued research on all trans individuals’ experiences, especially those who identify as non-binary, trans people of color, and trans women.

This research discusses organ donation, understood as a social practice supported by a network of various human and non human actors. More specifically, our research focuses on narrative types and interpretative repertoires used by living kidney donors to build versions about organ donation. Interviews were conducted with three donors, two potential donors and three recipients at the kidney transplantation department of Hospital Universitário Walter Cantídio, in Fortaleza (CE-Brazil). The interviews were transcribed and analyzed in terms of narrative types and interpretative repertoires in use. Among the results, we can highlight the predominant use of restitution narratives to talk about kidney donation as an expedient to restore the recipient’s lost health. This finding shows the powerful discursive matrix, supported by biotechnology and contemporary Western medicine, which values health as a normal condition and establishes the need for repair in cases of illness. Among the arguments and metaphors used to build the donation, we highlight the act of love and gift of life, which compose the “language of gift”. The donor tends to be positioned as a brave, heroic person, whose altruism saves lives; while the organs to be donated are formulated as rare and valuable resources that must be recycled, specially in case of a close parent’s need. We conclude that the ways of telling stories of renal donation and the interpretive repertoires used in those narratives produce specific effects in the living transplant actors’ network, functioning to promote the recruitment of donors in the family.

Fernandes, Eduardo Georjão January 2016 (has links)
The subject of this research is the disputes promoted by media vehicles at the coverage of social movements actions. We seek to, empirically, identify the interpretative frameworks built by three newspapers (Zero Hora, Diário Gaúcho and Sul21) about the 2013 protests cycle, in Porto Alegre/RS, in particular in what it refers to the interactions between protesters and police apparatus. Methodologically, we constructed a database with all the publications of each newspaper, at the coverage of the mobilization cycle and we interviewed journalists responsible for producing the content of these publications. After organizing and quantifying the database, identifying coverage trends, we selected specific protest events (occurred on March 27, April 04, June 13 and June 20) and the end-of-the-year "retrospectives" for content analysis. The convergence between empirical data and theoretical references resulted in three central dimensions: the identity of protesters; the characterization of protest claims; the interactions between protesters, and police. From these dimensions we constructed an analytical model for the implementation of the study. The survey results indicate that the construction of interpretative frameworks by Zero Hora, Diário Gaúcho, and Sul21 was characterized by the multiplicity of interpretative schemes. This multiplicity concerns about the differences (a) between the contents of each newspaper and about the (b) framework changes in the course of mobilizations. Zero Hora and Diário Gaúcho produced similar frameworks. Initially, the coverage of both newspapers focused on the identification of repertoires of patrimonial damage by protesters, taking the manifestation (called "hooliganism") as illegitimate. Throughout the year, Zero Hora and Diário Gaúcho delimited a distinction between "peaceful protesters" and a specific group - qualified as "vandals" -, which was considered responsible for conducting repertoires of patrimonial damage. This framework transformation denoted an increasing autonomy of this particular repertoire (taken as illegitimate) in relation with the mobilization itself (considered legitimate). Sul21 was characterized, diversely, by the emphasis, since the beginning of the year, on questioning the police action of repression to the manifestations. The protests, on the other hand, were invariably considered legitimate by Sul21. Finally, the end-of-the-year "retrospectives" indicated similarities between the frameworks of all the newspapers, with the construction of a hegemonic interpretative synthesis about the protest cycle. From the data analysis, we formulated the following typology of interpretative frameworks adopted in different moments of the year: "manifestation as an affront to order"; "Police as a violent institution"; "The majority of peaceful protesters opposed to the minority of violent protesters"; "The majority of peaceful protesters opposed to the minority of violent protesters and opposed to a violent police." The chronological analysis denoted disputes between these different types of coverage, with the establishment of a "battlefield" interpretation.

Pagliosa, João Pedro Germano January 2017 (has links)
The present research aims to investigate the use of reflexive practice in the interpretative construction of the work "Pattapiana" for flute and string orchestra by Brazilian composer Dimitri Cervo. For Finlay (2008) reflexive practice is the process of learning through and from experience towards new insights of self and / or practice. Finlay (2008) also cites the reflective cycle of Gibbs (1998), which proposes steps for the conduct of reflective practice, which was used in the first stage of study on the piece. The methodology took place in different stages: individual study in 8 sections with audio and video recordings and annotations in study diaries; rehearsals with the composer at the piano, documented in study diaries; rehearsals with string quintet, documented in study diaries; performance of the piece, documented in audio and video records. After the data collection, the audio and video recordings were randomly submitted to three external evaluators - two flutists and the composer of the work, all of them professors of Federal Institutes of Higher Education of Brazil - in order to classify in ascending order the sections of individual study, followed by semi-structured interviews on the evaluations. The data obtained through the analysis of the records and the interviews with the evaluators were crossed with the records of the individual study diaries. Subsequently, rehearsals were performed with the composer on the piano, playing a reduction written on our request and rehearsing with a quintet of strings performing the original orchestral parts. The process culminated in the performance of the work in my recital of the conclusion of the master's degree in interpretive practices by the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. The comparison between the external evaluators records and the individual record showed that the use of the reflexive practice in a documented way was a useful tool in the interpretative construction of the work and caused a qualitative growth in the process as a whole.

Controvérsias tecnológicas : o caso do aeromóvel em Porto Alegre

Ames, Valesca Daiana Both January 2014 (has links)
This master´s thesis falls within the scope of discussions on technological controversies with the overall objective to map and analyze the controversies that settled around the Aeromovel in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, during the period that extends from the late 1970s to the year of 2013. The theoretical references adopted to map and analyse the controversies lies within the field of Social Studies of Science and Technology, more specifically, in the Social Construction of Technology approach. The specific objectives consist of identifying the social groups that were involved in the controversies, analyze the formulated speeches about the Aeromovel, as well as social context's elements mobilized by the social actors to explain the history of technology. The study had a qualitative character using primary and secondary sources to generate data. The primary source consisted of narrative interviews with members of relevant social groups. The secondary sources were composed of newspaper articles, technical reports, minutes of public hearing, catalogs disclosure and the Aeromovel´s term of employment. Data analysis was obtained from the combination of elements of analysis proposed by Schutze, the argumentative and the thematic analysis. The results indicate the distinct interpretations formulated by social groups regarding the meaning, the problems and advantages of the Aeromovel, as well as the contextual factors that have influenced its development. Furthermore, we present the main controversies surrounding the technology. The description of different groups involved and the interpretative flexibility concerning the Aeromovel indicates that the process of experimentation and deployment are not restricted to technical or scientific scope, involving political groups, enterprise groups and the media. In addition, we conclude that the opening and closing of the controversies did not depend on proof of the efficiency of Aeromovel, but social factors as the rhetorical skill of actors involved and the redefinition of technology problems. The description about the controversies surrounding the Aeromovel intends to launch a "human" look at the process of building technologies, presenting it as permeated by uncertainty, negotiations, agreements and disputes between social groups.
