This thesis is an examination of the representation of women in the contemporary female Bildungsromane, Rubyfruit Jungle (1973), by Rita Mae Brown, and Hotel du Lac (1984), by Anita Brookner. Considering the socio-historical context in which the works were produced, it is observed that the new role of women in this scenario indicates a change in its cultural representation, strengthening social criticism about the traditional female status. In the quest for affirmation of individuality and fulfillment of personal desires, the trajectories of the heroines Molly Bolt and Edith Hope are still marked by an unfavorable situation for women, since the construction of the feminine character occurs in traumatic or disharmonious environments, and presents a contradiction between the position attained by the character in contemporary society and its respective literary representation. Thus, by creating a sort of conscious tradition with the Bildungsroman paradigm, the female authors critically revisit the humanist values of the Germanic Bildung and question the explicit or implicit influence of patriarchal thought on female representation, offering new perspectives. The ability of the heroines to evaluate their own position as subject in the world and their awareness of their difference stands out. Thus, whether in an awakening in adolescence or a personal rebirth in midlife, Molly and Edith choose their own values for their aesthetic-spiritual improvement and freedom-responsibility in the Bildung process. It is understood that these decisions reveal themselves as forms of rejection of pre-established cultural norms for women, promoting writing as a way of asserting non-patriarchal female identities. It is argued that female Bildungsroman should be addressed by a constant critical interrogation of the form of narrating the personal and social development... Maskininlärning i fastighetsbranschen : Prediktion av felanmälningar gällande inomhusklimat baserat på sensordata / Machine learning in the real estate industry : Predictions of error reportings regarding indoor climate based on sensor data

Schnackenburg, Ellen Cecilia, Leife, Karl January 2017 (has links)
This thesis investigates the prerequisites needed for the Swedish real estate company Fabege to create useful machine learning models for classification and prediction of error reports from tenants. These error reports are regarding cold indoor climates and bad indoor air quality. By analyzing the available data, that consists of error reporting data, weather data and indoor climate data, the thesis investigates the different correlations between the sensor data and the error reports. By using an algorithm called decision jungle, two machine learning models have been trained in Microsoft Azure Machine Learning Studio. The main model, trained on error reporting data and weather data, shows the possibilities to classify data instances as a part of different error reporting classes. The model proves that it is possible to predict the emergence of future error reports of different classes with an average accuracy of 78%. The complementary model, trained on a small but more richly annotated dataset consisting of one year of indoor sensor data as well as the above-mentioned data, shows that there is a possibility to improve the main model by using indoor climate data. The thesis has shown that for Fabege to expand and improve these models, the amount of data collected from the indoor sensors needs to be largely increased. Fabege also needs to improve the quality of the error reporting data, which could be achieved by improving the error reporting form used by the tenants.

Imperialist Discourse: Critical Limits of Liberalism in Selected Texts of Leonard Woolf and E.M. Forster

De Silva, Lilamani 12 1900 (has links)
This dissertation traces imperialist ideology as it functions in the texts of two radical Liberal critics of imperialism, Leonard Woolf and E. M. Forster. In chapters two and three respectively, I read Woolf's autobiographical account Growing and his novel The Village in the Jungle to examine connections between "nonfictional" and "fictional" writing on colonialism. The autobiography's fictive texture compromises its claims to facticity and throws into relief the problematic nature of notions of truth and fact in colonialist epistemology and discursive systems.

The present research is focused on the study of school infrastructure, specifically in a rural context in the Jungle. It seeks to question and rethink the design of rural schools in Peru. It is investigated on the different on the school infrastructure. The specific user, which is focused on native communities, studies the different styles, beliefs and customs that these carry and with the result it seeks to create a fusion between the learning methods of the communities with the study of the different pedagogical methods proposed in current events such as Montessori and Reggio Emilia. On the other hand, the context is analyzed; the scope and limitations that arise in the area, we focus on natural resources as architectural potentials, either as materials from the area or the context and nature as potential learning tools and take advantage of the natural atmosphere that rural contexts provide, A mapping of the existing schools is also carried out to differentiate and rescue virtues and deficiencies. We also dedicate a chapter to the history of rural schools, the purpose and the different objectives for which they were formed. With all the aforementioned and more, we seek to reach conclusions that serve as a starting point for a future architectural project. / Trabajo de investigación

Classifying human activities through machine learning

Lannge, Jakob, Majed, Ali January 2018 (has links)
T.ex., i nödsituationssystem. / Classifying Activities of daily life (ADL) can be used in a system that monitor people’s activities for different purposes. For example, in emergency systems. Machine learning is a way to classify ADL with high accuracy, using wearable sensors as an input. In this paper, a proof-of-concept system consisting of three different machine learning algorithms is evaluated and compared between tree different datasets, one publicly available at (Ugulino, et al., 2012), and two collected in this paper using an android device’s accelerometer and gyroscope sensor. The algorithms are: Multiclass Decision Forest, Multiclass Decision Jungle and Multiclass Neural Network. The two sensors used are an accelerometer and a gyroscope. The result shows how a system can be implemented using Azure Machine Learning Studio, and how three different algorithms performs when classifying three different datasets. One algorithm achieves a higher accuracy compared to the machine learning model initially used with the Ugolino data set.

Woman and nature : The connection between nature and the feminine sphere in The Vortex by José Eustasio Rivera

Oyagüez Karlsson, Luna January 2020 (has links)
The ecological crisis and gender inequality are two serious problems in society today and a study conjoining them can contribute to a deeper understanding surrounding the issues. This paper argues that there is a relation between these problems with the support of ecofeminist theory. This relation can be analysed in literature and in the following study the colombian novel La Vorágine (1924), by José Eustasio Rivera, works as the base of interpretation since its main theme is the Amazonian jungle and its relation to humans. The objective of this study is to firstly, interpret and analyse the descriptions of nature and how it relates to the feminine sphere, secondly analyse the correlation between them in the question of domination and finally, look at how the masculine play a role in this relation. This writing concludes after the hermeneutic analysis, that feminine associations can be detected in the descriptions of nature and a correlation between the domination of women and the exploitation of the jungle in the story is visible, since both phenomena’s occupy a similar position within the patriarchal society. It also concludes that the masculine plays an important part, the white man acts as the exploiter of the female and nature. But they are at the same time not a homogenous group, and have different roles depending on class. The feminine characters are likewise not a homogenous group.
