Linear Algebra for Array Signal Processing on a Massively Parallel Dataflow Architecture

Savaş, Süleyman January 2009 (has links)
This thesis provides the deliberations about the implementation of Gentleman-Kung systolic array for QR decomposition using Givens Rotations within the context of radar signal processing. The systolic array of Givens Rotations is implemented and analysed using a massively parallel processor array (MPPA), Ambric Am2045. The tools that are dedicated to the MPPA are tested in terms of engineering efficiency. aDesigner, which is built on eclipse environment, is used for programming, simulating and performance analysing. aDesigner has been produced for Ambric chip family. 2 parallel matrix multiplications have been implemented to get familiar with the architecture and tools. Moreover different sized systolic arrays are implemented and compared with each other. For programming, ajava and astruct languages are provided. However floating point numbers are not supported by the provided languages. Thus fixed point arithmetic is used in systolic array implementation of Givens Rotations. Stable and precise numerical results are obtained as outputs of the algorithms. However the analysis results are not reliable because of the performance analysis tools.

Pour une esthétique du cinéma transludique : figures du jeu vidéo et de l'animation dans le cinéma d'effets visuels du tournant du XXIe siècle

Picard, Martin 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis proposes an analysis between cinema and video games from an interdisciplinary standpoint to demonstrate the remediation of video games’ narrative structures and forms in visual effects-driven films of the early twenty-first century. More specifically, the thesis focuses on the analysis of three major figures of video games and animation films in The Matrix trilogy (Larry and Andy Wachowski, 1999-2003), Avalon (Mamoru Oshii, 2001) and Kung Fu Hustle (Stephen Chow, 2004). The first section of the thesis is a theoretical framework in which the aesthetic parameters of visual effects-driven films and video games are introduced. Some preliminary thoughts on the aesthetics of visual effects-driven films are first outlined before presenting the main transmedial relationships between cinema and video game. Then, it is the transludic cinema which is defined as the term derives from the unique synergy between cinema and video game. Since transludic cinema specifically concerns the remediation of the aesthetics of video games in contemporary cinema, the grounds of an aesthetics of video game are established. In the second section, the figures and subfigures at the heart of this thesis are developed, and then applied to an analysis of the films. The first figure to be discussed is the motif of exploration, where I analyze the significance of this figure in the video game design and science-fiction films narratives, and the meaning of navigation as a spatio-temporal experience in virtual worlds. Then, I demonstrate the use of the recurring figure of the game level in the contemporary hybrid cinema, which structures the narrative as much as the representational image. Finally, the figure of metamorphosis, an essential characteristic of animation, is being studied to highlight the importance of this figure in digital films. I also explain the transformation of the image that affects the transludic film, an image qualified as an “image-frontière”.

För Sverige - i tiden : En analys av Sveriges kung Carl XVI Gustafs uttalanden och befogenheter i början av 2000-talet

Pettersson, Niklas January 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this essay is to examinate the statements and verbal attributions of King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden in the early 2000’s. More exactly I’ve got two question formulations: Which statements does king Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden make during the early 2000’s and are these statements, in line with the king’s attributions, non-political, party-politically neutral and noncontroversial according to different perspectives? Question number two is if there are to find any boundaries for where the verbal attributions of Carl XVI Gustaf seem to go when he expresses himself in the role as the king of Sweden and the chief of state in the early 2000’s. My procedure is to read the Christmas speeches of Carl XVI Gustaf during the 2000’s and use former beheld statements of Carl XVI Gustaf to seek answers to the research questions. My conclusions are that the king does make political as well as party-political statements according to different perspectives. The king sometimes speaks fondly about EU, advocates multiculturalism, praises the family as a social building block and embellishes the Swedish monarchy. According to different perspectives these notions cannot be seen as nonpolitical nor party-politically neutral because in some questions different opinions are prevailed among parliament parties and other bigger parties in Sweden. However, the statements of the king can hardly be seen as controversial since his statements often rest upon strong common values and national unity. The verbal boundary of Carl XVI Gustaf is floating and cannot be unravelled, but it’s possible to approach the truth with three cores: 1. The king can encourage, although not tell how something is to be done. 2. The king shall keep within the national unity and common values. 3. It’s not always enough with Swedish national unity, nor shall Carl XVI Gustaf butt in discussions that undermines the relations with other countries.

Gal Pals and Gentlemen of the Bedchamber : En begreppshistorisk undersökning av historiebruket runt queera kungligheter på sociala medier / Gal Pals and Gentlemen of the Bedchamber : A conceptual historical study of the use of history around queer royalty on social media

Alfheim, Julia January 2023 (has links)
This G-3 essay aimed to study how people on three American left leaning social medias appoint queer identities to historical people and the discourse around this appointment. This was studied through the theoretical lenses of queer theory and the use of history. The source material consisted of posts from Tumblr, Twitter and Reddit and it was studied both quantitatively and qualitatively through the method of conceptual history. The historical people examined were Queen Christina of Sweden and King James VI and I of Scotland and England. This essay discovered that a wide variety of queer identities were appointed to the royals. However, all queer identities appointed were identities that matched the discoveries scientists have made about the royals’ lives. Furthermore, between one third and half of all posts used sources to justify the appointment of queer identities. The use of history in all posts were found to be either existential in nature – showing a desire to find connections with other queer people through history – or moral – using history to argue against current injustice against queer people.

The Role Taijiquan in Supporting Adaptive Development in Adulthood

Komelski, Matthew F. 03 May 2010 (has links)
Purpose: Working from lifespan development theory and the theory of Selective Optimization with Compensation (SOC), I provide theoretical analyses to inform and direct research on Taijiquan where research questions involve issues of adaptive development (optimization of gains, maintenance of function, and prevention of lost resources). I also used these frameworks to construct a biopsychosocial mind-body practices model that seeks to explain and predict the role of key aspects (curriculum, practice, context) in Taiji-related development. The above frameworks are further substantiated through a comparative analysis of health status between Taijiquan practitioners (N =120; age range = 24-83, M = 54.77) and a nationally representative sample (N = 414,629; age range = 18-99, M = 54.86) collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The model's predictive potential is explored through an analysis of health status within a subset of experienced Taiji practitioners (N = 94; age range = 24-83, M = 55.82). Design: Theoretical and cross-sectional; between- and within-group comparisons. Methods: Responses from a convenience sample of Taiji practitioners were collected using an online survey. The instrument was designed to collect data on health-related quality of life (HRQoL), lifestyle variables, and Taiji practice regimens. Data from Taiji practitioners were merged with the CDC's 2008 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) dataset, forming three groups: no exercise, some exercise, and Taiji exercise. Health status was regressed on exercise group while controlling for age, income, and education, as well as the interaction between age and exercise group. Further analyses were also conducted on a subset of the Taiji data (N=94). These analyses examined the relationships among self-reported health, practice regimens, and diet while controlling for age and experience. Results: In the first set of analyses (see paper one), I controlled for the effects of age, income, education, and the differential effects of age on exercise group, while determining associations between health and group membership. A significant interaction effect (p < 0.001) occurred between age and exercise group membership. This interaction showed little difference between exercise groups in the young adult age range, but among older adults, Taijiquan practitioners displayed the best HRQoL. In the second set of analyses (see paper 2), I found significant interaction effects between (a) curricular complexity and out-of-class practice (p < 0.05) and (b) curricular complexity and diet (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The extraordinary health status trajectory among Taiji practitioners may be attributable to several conditions including: (a) the implied presence of SOC-related strategies, (b) the general benefits of psychophysical expertise, and (c) concomitant structure between Taiji-related goals and health behaviors that contributes to optimal aging. Specifically, intervention designers, Taiji teachers, and practitioners should consider the potential benefits of well rounded Taiji curricula, regular out-of-class practice, and healthy diet for optimizing health-related gains and minimizing losses typically associated with aging. / Ph.
