Can't We Just Be Who We Are? The Experiences, Identity, and Beliefs of Adolescents with Disabilities Who Identify as a Sexual or Gender MinorityKahn, Lauren 29 September 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to gain an in-depth understanding of the lived experiences of adolescents with disabilities who identify as a sexual or gender minority within four ecological domains of self, school, family, and community and of how those experiences shape identity, sense of self, and beliefs about the future. Using in-depth semi-structured interviews, this research was conducted with an intersectionality framework that examined how the intersection of markers of difference inform individual reality and lived experiences for young adults with disabilities who identify as a sexual or gender minority. The sample included eight adolescents in high school across the state of Oregon who had a 504 plan or an Individualized Education Program and identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, or queer.
A multiple-phase data analysis led to in-depth descriptions of each individual's experiences as well as consistent cross-case themes. Key themes in the individual context included: identity development, positive beliefs about identity, navigation of identity labels, strategies for facing discrimination, and relationships. Experiences in the home context that shaped identity focused on the key areas of support, rejection, and religion. Concerning the school social context, the themes that emerged were the overlap of queerness and disability in the schools, Gay Straight Alliances and extracurricular clubs, and desired staff characteristics for an adult ally in school. No consistent themes were identified in the community domain. These findings contributed to the participants' descriptions of their beliefs about the future, focusing on independent living, postsecondary education, and employment. Analysis extends the limited research available for this subgroup, shedding a light on the importance of inclusive research. In addition, findings support implications for changes in how we work with students with disabilities who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, questioning, queer, transgender, or intersex as well as how we train and support our teachers to work with all students and engage in anti-discriminatory practices.

The Impact of Culturally Proficient School Leadership on LGBTQI Students and StaffMince, Marcus Dwayne 08 1900 (has links)
Research has shown that LGBTQI youth are four to six times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. Many schools across the nation have focused their efforts on creating safer climates for diverse populations, including LGBTQI youth and staff. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which school leaders practice culturally proficient school leadership in order to build and foster positive relationships with students and staff who are members of the LGBTQI community. The overarching research question was: To what extent do school leaders identify and practice culturally proficient leadership in relation to LGBTQI students and staff? A sequential mixed-methods explanatory research design was utilized to examine the perceptions of secondary school leaders and staff in one mid-sized urban school district regarding culturally proficient school leadership. For the quantitative portion of the study, a School Climate Questionnaire and a School-Wide Cultural Competence Observation Checklist was employed. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze quantitative responses. For the qualitative portion of the study, data pertaining to the experiences and perceptions of secondary school leaders, obtained through focus group interviews, were examined. A two-part data analysis process, including both deductive and inductive coding, was used. Evidence from this study found six school leadership behaviors that impacted cultural proficiency. These behaviors emerged into themes including (a) awareness, (b) training, (c) discussion, (d) resources, (e) safety, and (f) proactive solutions. Findings from this study suggest as school leaders' behaviors align more closely with the six themes at their campuses, they will be better able to build and foster relationships with LGBTQI youth and staff.

Multidimensional Effects of anti-LGBTQI Discrimination. : A case study of Dar Es Salaam’s LGBTQI community; Lived realities of queerphobia in Tanzania.Burford, Adam January 2023 (has links)
‘The LGBTQ community is not sinful and criminal’ was a quote made by Pope Francis at the time of writing this paper on his sub-Saharan tour in Kinshasa (NPR, 2023), denouncing LGBTQI criminalisation as ‘unjust’. At present, 33 of the 68 countries globally who criminalise homosexuality are African (Varella, 2022). This is predominantly consequential to laws which came into legislation under European colonising powers. In many African states these exist until the present day with vague wording, such as ‘carnal knowledge against the order of nature’ (Reid, 2022), attempting to be justified on cultural and religious grounds. Looking at Tanzania’s case, which criminalises homosexuality with up to life prison sentences (Human Dignity Trust, 2019), this paper assesses the ramifications of multidimensional discrimination on LGBTQI citizens. Inspired by the United Nations ‘Leave no one behind’ campaign (UN, 2022), an analytical human security framework is utilised in conjunction with Galtung's conflict triangle (Dutta, 2022) and queer theory to assess the multidimensional effects of discrimination LGBTQI Tanzanians face. This research is undertaken using a bottom-up approach, focusing on the complexities and intricacies of discrimination from the LGBTQI perspective, through life story and open-ended interviews as well as ethnographic observation of the queer community and key informants working in organisations helping the marginalised LGBTQI community in Dar Es Salaam. A literature review justified this bottom-up methodology as a research gap presented itself insofar as this is an understudied and underrepresented demographic. Under the new presidency and with globalisation becoming more influential on societal mindsets this study aims to decipher between legislation and lived realities. Time constraints present a challenge limiting ethnographic findings, with delimitations presenting themselves in single language interviews due to translation restrictions. Findings enabled the community and organisation representatives to represent their perception of discrimination which were then analysed, to identify key areas requiring further research and development. This study aspires to contribute to knowledge in the field of LGBTQI inclusion in global development and human security in accordance with the SDGs of the Agenda 2030 (UN, 2018).

THE UNTOLD STORIES: An exploration of police views regarding the policing of LGBTQI+ hate crimes in Cape Town, Western Cape, South AfricaSichinga, Daniel Lifuka 26 April 2023 (has links) (PDF)
In South Africa, despite constitutional safeguards, research has shown Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay, Transgender, Intersex, and Queer (LGBTIQ+) individuals who experience hate-related incidents based on their sexual orientation and gender identity expression (SOGIE) do not report their cases to the police for fear of secondary victimisation. Much of the complaints against the police cite homophobic and heterosexist work cultures that leave victims feeling disenfranchised from accessing justice. While this may be the case, little to no research exists regarding the perceptions, experiences, and challenges faced by frontline police officers in policing LGBTQI+ hate crimes. Drawing on qualitative interviews with 30 police officers from five police stations in the Cape Metropole, South Africa, this research investigates the dynamics underlying the policing of LGBTQI+ hate crimes and the ways in which personal, institutional, and national cultural identities intersect. The research finds that police officers' perceptions of policing LGBTQI+ hate crimes are influenced by societal and institutional culture. Within these spaces, police officers are constantly negotiating parts of their identity to fit society and the SAPS' organisation cultural narratives. The research finds that discretion is central to how police officers conduct the policing of LGBTQI+ hate crimes. Discretion is observed in processes and how they define what constitutes criminality. The research further finds that the policing of LGBTQI+ hate crimes occur in spaces with limited resources. Resource constraints combined with burn-out and low morale negatively impact the SAPS service delivery standards. The research concludes with recommendations of a SOGIE-based hate crimes education for all, improving LGBTQI+-police relations through community liaisons and reducing police officers' stressors to improve employee wellbeing.

ABSTRACT Background: In Sweden, it is estimated that 2-6 percent of the population identify themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer or intersexpersons (LGBTQI). LGBTQI persons who have experienced abusive treatment or discrimination in health care refrain from seeking care. Experiences of discrimination can lead to mental and psyical ill-health. This is a major problem as health care is a place where everyone should feel respected and treated fairly. Aim: To examine LGBTQI individuals' experiences and desires of encounters with health care professionals. Method: Qualitative descriptive design. The results of the study are based on 12 qualitative studies from the databases PubMed, CINAHL and PsycInfo. The articles were quality audited according to the Swedish Agency for Health Technology Assessment and Assessment of Social Services (SBU's) checklist. Result: Two main categories and seven subcategories were identified. The first category was Experiences, with the following subcategories: Discrimination, Heteronormativity, Lack of knowledge among healthcare professionals and Affirmation. The second category was Desire which included the following subcategories: Treated with respect, Inclusion and Person-centered care. Conclusion: Discrimination against LGBTQI people is common in healthcare. This is a severe problem that leads to LGBTQI people's trust in care decreasing and that they avoid seeking care despite experienced need. This highlights the need for increased knowledge among health care professionals about the rights of LGBTQI persons.

När regnbågsfärger smygersig in i riksdagen : En kvantitativ innehållsanalys om hbtqioch svensk politik / When colours of the rainbow sneak its way into the parliament: : A quantitative content analysis on LGBTQI and Swedish politicsEriksson, Samantha January 2023 (has links)
LGBTQI-rights differentiates depending on which part of the world and which country chosen to study. Studies on LGBTQI-rights has shown that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights isn’t as inclusive as one could hope it would be. Individual state’s drive for implementing LGBTQI-rights differs both worldwide but also regional-wise. According to ILGA-Europe, Sweden is the 6th LGBTQI-friendliest country to live in based on a study of 49 European countries. Even though this is a relatively good placement Sweden still has room for improvement. Especially regarding bi-, trans-, intersex and lgbtqi-refugee rights. To understand how this translates to Swedish politics, this study examines if different LGBTQI-groups are mentioned more than others. Using a quantitative method, I analyse 176 government bills and motions submitted to the parliament for decision between 2013-2021. These documents represent every case this type of document mentioned LGBTQI-individuals at least one time, meaning this study is a total survey. The findings show that there were too few cases of usage of the acronym LGBTQI to draw any conclusions. However, the results showed there was a difference when using the acronym LGB and LGBT, since bills using the LGBT-acronym included more groups. Another find was homosexuals were referred to more often than bisexuals, transgendered, intersex and queer people. This also correlated to mention of hate towards homosexuals where more common than mentions of biphobia and transphobia.

HBTQI-utbildning och socialtjänsten : en dekorativ brosch eller ett banbrytande förändringsarbete?Hult, Serafia, Utne, Julia January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate what changes individual social workers experience following LGBTQI education and what kind of working methods around LGBTQI issues occur. Through qualitative interviews with six social workers and with the help of a thematic analysis method, three themes have emerged: external influencing factors, norm-critical work and client contact. The results show that the LGBTQI education contributes to a norm-critical approach and way of working, which is kept alive if the conditions allow it. After the training the informants' view of people has changed and they experience that they are working in an inclusive way, norm-consciously and self-reflective. With the chosen theoretical perspective, the results can be interpreted as follows: the informants are implementing an anti-oppressive method in their work and using tools of reflection. Through this, they can hopefully minimize their influence on minority stress. Moreover, the study aims to contribute with an understanding of how a LGBTQI education can help professionals within social work adopt an inclusive view of people by working in a norm critical way.

Implementeringens förutsättningar och utmaningar inom äldreomsorgen : En kvalitativ studie inriktad på hbtqi-frågor inom äldreomsorgen i Kalmar kommun / The implementation conditions and challenges in elderly care : A qualitative study focused on LGBTQ issues in elderly care i Kalmar municipalityTörnkrantz, Ebba, Franzén, Sara January 2023 (has links)
This is a qualitative study about Kalmar municipality. The purpose of the studyis to problematize Kalmar municipality's organizational and political conditions for the implementation of lgbtqi issues in elderly care. This problematization means to draw attention to whether older lgbtqi people in elderly care receive equal care and good treatment. Historically has lgbtqi been seen as a norm-breaking behaviour. Older lgbtqi people mostly live in hiding. Even today, the structure of society is built according to norms and values that affect the right of older lgbtqi-people to be themselves. The study builds on semi-structured interviews. The interviews have been conducted in real life, digitally and through email with nine informants. The informants are working in Kalmar municipality as either politicians, business developers, municipal commissioners, municipal directors or other officials who work with issues regarding equal elderly care. Some informants have had more expertise regarding lgbtqi issues. Research and the interviews have contributed to a greater understanding and created different themes. The themes are prerequisites for implementation, challenges for implementation, knowledge and competence and treatment. During the interviews, various factors emerged that contributed to subheadings for each theme. Examples of factors shown are collaboration, open communication and commitment, budget, attitudes and structure. Analysis was performed by the use of the structuration theory. The theory of structuration means that actors and activities together influence how social structures are designed and changed in society. The result shows that more attention and work is needed around lgbtqi issues in the elderly care in Kalmar municipality. Kalmar municipality is undergoing a reorganization that may have an impact on the social work with lgbtqi. The results also show that knowledge and competence are limited in Kalmar municipality. Some factors that can have an affect on knowledge and competence are budget, time, open communication and commitment to the subject. Keywords: Kalmar municipality, implementation, lgbtqi-action plan, lgbtqi, elderly care, treatment, equal care
