Drop-on-demand bioprinting of HUVECs and capillary-like networks via laser-induced side transfer

Erfanian, Mahyar 12 1900 (has links)
The fabrication of biological tissues in laboratory settings has been widely investigated for its applications in research, organ transplantation, and drug screening. Although several previous attempts to generate avascular or thin tissues have been successful, there remains the challenge to create thick functional tissues. Maintaining the viability of thick tissues requires the presence of a capillary network throughout the construct to allow the intake of nutrients and the discard of cellular waste through blood. In addition to endothelial cells, the incorporation of supporting cell types is necessary to promote survival, maturation, and acquire in vivo-like functionality. Compared to other biofabrication methods, bioprinting is a promising technology that enables the precise fabrication of complex 3D patterns at high spatial resolution. We have come up with a new configuration of our in-house laser-based bioprinting technique called laser-induced side transfer (LIST) in which the bioink passes through a horizontal glass capillary with an orifice facing the receiving substrate. When the laser beam causes bubble formation in the bioink, a liquid jet exits through the orifice that will eventually form a droplet. We have conducted a detailed study to characterize this bioprinting technique and validated its cytocompatibility through viability assessment of LIST-printed human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). In an effort to generate physiological blood vessels, we incorporated fibroblasts and pericytes in our samples and observed the gradual recruitment of these cells by the printed HUVEC capillary-like structures on Matrigel. Fluorescent images were taken and analyzed to quantify the fibroblast/pericyte recruitment over time.

Návrh revitalizace naučné stezky "Údolím Labe" a jeho ověření a využití v praxi na ZŠ / Proposal for Revitalization of the Nature Trail "Through the Valley of the Labe River" and its Verification and Use in Practice at Primary Schools

Hrozányová, Martina January 2021 (has links)
The diploma thesis is focused on the didactic use of the educational trail through the Elbe Valley for students of the 2nd grade of elementary school. The main goal of the thesis was to create a topic for the practical use of the existing educational trail through the Elbe Valley and at the same time to prove that excursion as an organizational form of teaching is thanks to its versatility an effective tool in the process of education and despite many difficulties to implement it it is worth the effort. The theoretical part includes the characteristics of the educational trail and its surroundings, the purpose, function and organization of the excursion and the inclusion of the science excursion in the Framework Educational Programmes of Basic Education. The second part of the thesis is a research - it contains a description of the author's worksheet and testing methods, i.e. pretest/posttest and attitude questionnaire. These were used on a pilot group of elementary school students participating in the excursion. The results of the survey show that the excursion can be perceived as an effective and at the same time popular form of teaching, through which it is possible to increase the effectiveness of teaching science at elementary school. Their validity is affected by a small number of...

Patterns of Presenting Problems and Symptom Severity Related to Family Trauma in a Robust Sample of College Students

Vorkink, Gerilynn Price 22 May 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Because of the lasting impact that traumatic family events can have on psychological well-being, students who present for services at college counseling centers may be experiencing problems and symptoms associated with earlier trauma. Many college counseling centers utilize the Counseling Concerns Survey developed by the Research Consortium of Counseling and Psychological Services in Higher Education (1991) and the Outcome Questionnaire-45 (OQ-45; Lambert et al., 1996) as intake instruments to assess students who present for counseling. The major components of the Counseling Concerns Survey are the 18-item Family Experiences Questionnaire, which identifies history of family trauma, and the 42-item Presenting Problems List, which assesses students' major areas of distress. The OQ-45 measures symptom severity. While it is generally assumed that family trauma during childhood and adolescence can negatively impact future mental health and well-being, it has been unclear how specific traumatic family experiences reported on the Family Experiences Questionnaire are related to specific presenting problems as listed on the Presenting Problems List or symptom severity as measured by the OQ-45. The purpose of this study was to examine this relationship and to ascertain discernible patterns. Data from the intake instruments of 20,495 students who sought counseling services at a large western U.S. university from 1997 to 2007 was analyzed. Logistic regression of each of the 18 traumatic family history experiences was performed, using the initial OQ-45 score, the 42 Presenting Problems List items, and five Presenting Problems List factors (Draper, Jennings, & Baron, 2003) as "predictors" of the types of trauma the students might have experienced. Results showed that although family trauma of a variety of types was associated with symptom severity and various presenting problems, there did not seem to be an overall discernible pattern. The results suggest that trauma seems to have a diffuse association with presenting problems and symptom severity. However, some family traumas are associated with a greater number of presenting problems, and these traumas were identified.

Identifying How Successful Vocabulary-Learning Strategies Affect Reading Comprehension among Intermediate Learners of Mandarin Chinese

Jia, Hongyi 14 July 2011 (has links) (PDF)
The Chinese language has become an increasingly important Asian language for American students and more and more of them have a desire to learn it. The problems and the difficulties that Chinese foreign language (CFL) learners have when they try to use their knowledge of new vocabulary in reading comprehension are apparent. Previous studies have described some aspects that may influence reading comprehension and have indicated that Chinese is a relatively difficult language for native speakers of American English, but there are few studies that have focused on improving CFL learners' Chinese reading comprehension. This study investigates the effect of pre-learning vocabulary and contextualized word learning strategies on Chinese reading comprehension. The purpose of this study is to examine whether pre-learning vocabulary and contextualized word learning positively affect CFL learners' reading comprehension. The results show that pre-learning vocabulary does not have a positive effect on Chinese reading comprehension and that although contextualized word learning positively affects CFL learners' reading comprehension the effect is not significant. This study also gives relative analysis.

The Use of Industrial Performance Measurements : A Case Study of a Manufacturing Organization / Användning av Nyckeltal : En fallstudie av ett företag i en tillverkningsindustri

Björkman, Linnéa January 2019 (has links)
Performance measurements are used as evaluation tools in manufacturing organizations. The use of performance measurements should provide useful information regarding organizational performance. A challenge for manufacturing organizations is to translate the performance in an organization to quantifiable measures. Another challenge is to understand the potential of performance measurements to induce change. There are also requirements of the measures to be followed-up, in order for manufacturing organizations to go towards its objectives. Change and communication are another challenges for different departments within industrial organizations, because demands are faced for communication in order to optimize performance measurements. In this master thesis, a case study with a qualitative approach was conducted with the purpose of investigate the role of internal communication in the change of performance measurements systems in a manufacturing organization. A list of performance measurement has previously been provided and updated in the manufacturing organization. 14 employees within the manufacturing organization were interviewed regarding opinions of the performance measurements of the new implemented list. Furthermore, during the interviews the employees gave its opinions of how to follow-up the performance measurements. The employees also discussed how the communication is between the Manufacturing Engineering (ME) and the Product department in the manufacturing organization. The findings in the thesis show that after change in the organization clearer definition of performance measurements is essential. To have clear definition could lead to an increased understanding of how to optimize performance measurements. Furthermore, the findings show that effective communication between departments in manufacturing organizations can influence the performance measurement to be improved. The thesis firstly argues for the manufacturing organization to provide employees with a clearer definition of the performance measurements of the list with the performance measurements. Secondly, to have different follow-up processes of the performance measurements depending on the project the measures are applied to. Thirdly, the thesis argues for the development of communication to create a regular meeting place for the employees between the departments. The benefits of meeting these three arguments are for the manufacturing organization to improve its performance measurements. I intervjuerna diskuterades tre aspekter.

World Heritage in the Making : An ethnography of the cultural heritage conservation practices in İzmir, Türkiye

Karakaş, Ece January 2023 (has links)
This thesis is an ethnographic research of the cultural heritage conservation practices in İzmir, focusing particularly on the heritage site Historical Port City of İzmir’s conservation on individual, local, and global levels from an anthropological point of view. With its ongoing inscription process to UNESCO’s World Heritage List, the study aims, first, to understand the motivation behind this inscription, the current conservation practices in the city that are undergone by individual and local actors, and to analyze the impact and connection between the individual, local and global efforts to protect İzmir’s multicultural and multilayered heritage. Conducted during the 10-day long World Heritage Volunteers program “Heritage for the Future in the Historical Port City of İzmir” organized by the UNESCO World Heritage Education Program and Site Directorate of the Historical Port City of İzmir, the research employs the anthropological methods of participant observation, structured interviews, netnography, as well as multi-sensory ethnography. The study shows that the site’s WHL inscription is motivated by the desire to enhance the city’s further protection on different levels such as raising awareness, receiving financial help, and increasing its visibility to attract local, national, and international visitors and users. The same approach has also been observed within the current conservation practices conducted by local actors to preserve the multicultural values of the city and conserve its 8500 years of multilayered fabric that carries traces of Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Beylic, Ottoman, and Republican periods, stretching up to today. This short-term ethnographic research concludes that heritage conservation is a multi-level process where every level (individual, local, and global) and actor has an important role in the protection of the site’s integrity and the transmission of its values to future generations. Focusing on the current anthropological theories and studies on heritage and UNESCO, this case study of the Historical Port City of İzmir reflects that statement and points not only to the conservation of the city's past heritage but also to the fact that this cannot happen without addressing the city's contemporary needs such as sustainable development, cohesion, and the socio-economic prosperity of the city and its current inhabitants.

Impact on accuracy in elderly patients’ medication list, introducing pharmacy-led medical reconciliation at the Emergency department in a Swedish hospital. Background and objective: Discrepancies in patients‘ medication list is a well-known problem and contribute to preventable medication errors. Medication errors could increase morbidity and mortality and are cost-driving to the Health Care System. The primary objective was to investigate if a pharmacist-led medical reconciliation at the Emergency department could increase the accuracy in medication lists for patients at the age of 75 years and older, with five or more drugs in their initial medication list. The second objective was to categorize the discrepancies and the drugs causing them. Study design: Intervention study with retrospective control group. In the intervention group, patients received a medical reconciliation at the Emergency department. In conformity with the retrospective control group, the intervention group also received a medical reconciliation at the hospital ward. All medical reconciliations where pharmacy-led. Discrepancies identified at the medical reconciliation at the ward, were quantified and categorized. Drugs causing discrepancies were categorized by the ATC-index. Descriptive statistics, Chi2-tests and T-tests were performed.  Setting: The Emergency department at the hospital of Kristianstad, four wards at the larger emergency hospital in Kristianstad and two wards at the smaller local hospital in Hässleholm in Sweden Main outcome measures: Numbers of discrepancies in patients ‘medication list identified at medical reconciliation at hospital ward after having an initial medical reconciliation at the Emergency department (intervention) or not (control). Category of discrepancy and ATC-index of the substance causing the discrepancy. Results: In control group (n=65), 170 discrepancies were identified, on average 2,6 discrepancies/medication list. In intervention group (n=65), corresponding figures were 44 and 0,7 respectively. The difference between the groups was significant (p <0,0001).  The main category of discrepancy was “commission of a medication” in the control group and “route of administration” in the intervention group. Paracetamol was the most common drug to cause discrepancies in the control group, zopiklon and furosemid in intervention group. Conclusion: Pharmacy-led medical reconciliation at the Emergency department significantly reduced the number of discrepancies in patients´medication list.

Establishing an Essential Medicine List for the State of Kuwait

Alayadhi, Nadyah Y.A.H. January 2017 (has links)
The Health Sector at the state of Kuwait is facing many challenges. One of which is public expectations in health are high, and thus, the Ministry of Health (MOH) in Kuwait has amplified the health expenditure by 86% since 2007. And since the medicine budget represents half of the total MOH budget, it is proposed that the development in health policy might be a suitable tool to control the inflation within the health budget. This thesis examines the opportunities and challenges of introducing an EML in Kuwait and the factors influencing its effectiveness. A mixed-methodology approach has been used to enhance and validate the data, in the form of interviews, comparative studies and questionnaires. One major limitation to the research was the lack of previous data relating to this work, and the information should be gathered in person in the form of hard copies, and later, the data was analysed using qualitative and quantitative approaches. It has been attained that, the EML might be a valuable tool if adopted and implemented appropriately, EML adjustment to country health situation is crucial for successful utilisation and fulfilling the concept objectives. Standard Treatment Guidelines are fundamental part of EM selection process, in Kuwait there were lack in the uniformity of the local STG, but fortunately, there is an eagerness to innovate, and the medicine situation might benefit from a type of organisation, overall, if the EML implemented efficiently in Kuwait, it might help in improving the general health and control the inflation in MOH budget.

Highspeed Graph Processing Exploiting Main-Memory Column Stores

Hauck, Matthias, Paradies, Marcus, Fröning, Holger, Lehner, Wolfgang, Rauhe, Hannes 03 February 2023 (has links)
A popular belief in the graph database community is that relational database management systems are generally ill-suited for efficient graph processing. This might apply for analytic graph queries performing iterative computations on the graph, but does not necessarily hold true for short-running, OLTP-style graph queries. In this paper we argue that, instead of extending a graph database management system with traditional relational operators—predicate evaluation, sorting, grouping, and aggregations among others—one should consider adding a graph abstraction and graph-specific operations, such as graph traversals and pattern matching, to relational database management systems. We use an exemplary query from the interactive query workload of the LDBC social network benchmark and run it against our enhanced in-memory, columnar relational database system to support our claims. Our performance measurements indicate that a columnar RDBMS—extended by graph-specific operators and data structures—can serve as a foundation for high-speed graph processing on big memory machines with non-uniform memory access and a large number of available cores.
