Mac Lorin, Carminda 05 1900 (has links)
This dissertation aims to contribute to the thinking on certain transnational forms of social mobilization in the second decade of the 21st Century. To do so, it proposes three articles that examine different phenomena using an ethnographic approach: Occupy Montreal, Global Square, and the World Social Forum. The inspiration for this doctoral dissertation are the insights offered by critical geography on the importance of spatiality (Auyero, 2005; Massey, 1984; Therborn, 2006). It also explores “open space,” as presented in the literature on the World Social Forums (Keraghel and Sen, 2004; Sen, 2008; Teivainen, 2004; Wallerstein, 2004; Whitaker, 2000). Furthermore, my approach engages with the sociology literature on social movements (Fraser, 1990; Negt, 2007; Tilly, 2004) and contributes a complementary analysis – recognizing the desire for unity within the initiatives discussed as well as their complex and dynamic natures. The first article offers an interpretation of Occupy Montreal, which occupied Victoria Square in the fall of 2011. Observing two specific locations in the occupation, it questions whether observation of the spatiality of a so-called transnational social mobilization can teach us about the dynamics developed there. The second article of this thesis presents an analysis of two mobilizations that occurred in 2013 – the World Social Forum, held in Tunis, and Global Square. It therefor facilitates a dialogue between this emblematic alter-globalist phenomenon and an initiative comprised of activists from movements such as Occupy, Indignados, and the Jasmine Revolution – which organized on-line to participate in WSF 2013. This article explores the argument that transnational mobilization spaces are propelled by certain inherent tensions. The third article, co-authored with Nikolas Schall – uses the prism of “assemblage thinking” (DeLanda, 2006, 2016; Nail, 2017; Rabinow, 2011) to advance the understanding of transnational spaces, particularly the 2016 World Social Forum in Montreal. Assemblage thinking renews the possibilities for analyzing the constitutive heterogeneity of these complex transnational phenomena, which appear as the fruit of the interaction of multiple autonomous components (they themselves potentially being “assemblages of assemblages”), leading to the emergence of an ever-evolving “fragmentary whole” (DeLanda, 2006). The conclusion of this doctoral research offers a synthesis of these contributions. In the first instance it is shown how the theoretical dimensions presented in the introduction (illustrating the tensions between transnationality/anchorage, heterogeneity/unity, and horizontality/power relationships) are visible in each article. Then in the second instance, wishing to provide a response to the general question posed by this dissertation – how to account for complex transnational phenomena – I propose an analytical matrix for illustrating their emergence at the intersection of the various dimensions analyzed. The limitations of this dissertation are likewise presented. Finally, I suggest the relevance of expanding the concept of civil society to include the plurality of perspectives present in transnational spaces of mobilization.

Cavalsan, Lúcia Pereira Pires 21 February 2008 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 2 Lucia Pereira Pires Cavalsan1.pdf: 1236801 bytes, checksum: d5f9307b2e714907312158ee3d8e536b (MD5) Lucia Pereira Pires Cavalsan2.pdf: 3366088 bytes, checksum: fafe849f7eff1e2654774111d92d1e9d (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-02-21 / Instituto Presbiteriano Mackenzie / The research has the goal of analyzing the contributions of the television newspaper information in the lesson to establish inter relation among pupils having knowledge of different nature. By the daily use of television newspaper information it was possible to teach-in-context and analyze what television newspaper information may offer to enlarge and make the pupils information be always up to date, regarding local, national and international context. It was also possible to identify and to describe how pupils have utilized those received informations, how they have related them to the subject they have learned in the school and, finally, how they have done to take all those informations to their families. As the research is considered a kind of ex-post-facto research, having a quality nature, we have considered as data source, those answers given by the pupils using questionnaires , with the objective of knowing both the child and his family habit regarding television use. By using both individual and group interviews it has been possible to analyze the project contribution to each one of the pupils and how they have used this experience given by the television newspaper information. Finally using their parent interview results it has been possible to analyze the results of this project in the family day. This subject is of great importance, because it enables the school context to become integrated to the local, national and international informations. It gives the pupils rise both to the research and the interest of getting informations and knowledge which may also be shared with the family, allowing them, both the pupils and their family, to improve their self-esteem each day. Using what Shulman, Shoenfeld, Aebli, Forquin, Freire, Piaget, have told about this subject I have analyzed the school practice of the television newspaper information project through two basic processes as follows: how the teachers learn the teaching-in-context process and the pupils knowledge construction. With this paper, the pupil, the family, the school, the community or the teacher will have better results because, as Piaget has told (2005 p. 15) that what we want to, is that the teacher stops being just a lecturer and makes the pupils be interested in doing research and making better efforts instead of being fulfilled of giving them ready solutions .

Equations aux dérivées fractionnaires : propriétés et applications / Fractional differential equations : properties and applications

Hnaien, Dorsaf 21 September 2015 (has links)
Our objective in this thesis is the study of nonlinear differential equations involving fractional derivatives in time and/or in space. First, we are interested in the study of two nonlinear time and/or space fractional systems. Our second interest is devoted to the analysis of a time fractional differential equation. More exactly for the first part, the question concerning the global existence and the asymptotic behavior of a nonlinear system of differential equations involving time and space fractional derivatives is addressed. The used techniques rest on estimates obtained for the fundamental solutions and the comparison of some fractional inequalities. In addition, we study a nonlinear system of reaction-diffusion equations with space fractional derivatives. The local existence and the uniqueness of the solutions are proved using the Banach fixed point theorem. We show that the solutions are bounded and analyze their large time behavior. The second part is dedicated to the study of a nonlinear time fractional differential equation. Under some conditions on the initial data, we show that the solution is global while under others, it blows-up in a finite time. In this case, we give its profile as well as bilateral estimates of the blow-up time. While for the global solution we study its asymptotic behavior.

The main objective of this thesis focuses on theoretical and algorithmic researches of local and global optimization techniques to DC programming & DCA with Branch and Bound (B&B) and the DC/SDP relaxation techniques to solve several types of non-convex optimization problems (including Combinatorial Optimization and Polynomial Optimization). Mathematical modeling of TB disease dynamics in a crowded population.

Maku Vyambwera, Sibaliwe January 2020 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection which is a major cause of death worldwide. TB is a curable disease, however the bacterium can become resistant to the first line treatment against the disease. This leads to a disease called drug resistant TB that is difficult and expensive to treat. It is well-known that TB disease thrives in communities in overcrowded environments with poor ventilation, weak nutrition, inadequate or inaccessible medical care, etc, such as in some prisons or some refugee camps. In particular, the World Health Organization discovered that a number of prisoners come from socio-economic disadvantaged population where the burden of TB disease may be already high and access to medical care may be limited. In this dissertation we propose compartmental models of systems of differential equations to describe the population dynamics of TB disease under conditions of crowding. Such models can be used to make quantitative projections of TB prevalence and to measure the effect of interventions. Indeed we apply these models to specific regions and for specific purposes. The models are more widely applicable, however in this dissertation we calibrate and apply the models to prison populations.

Svensklärares skrivdidaktiska kunskapsbildning : Blivande och tidigt verksamma gymnasielärare i svenska talar om skrivundervisning / Developing pedagogical content knowledge for the teaching of writing : Prospective and novice teachers of Swedish talk about writing instruction

Winzell, Helen January 2016 (has links)
The teaching of writing is a central task for teachers of Swedish and it is a complex activity which requires knowledge of different areas such as language, communication, and text. The aim of this licentiate’s dissertation is to investigate when and how the knowledge needed for the teaching of writing is developed in teacher education as well as during the first years of teaching. The study is based on semi-structured qualitative interviews with prospective and novice upper secondary school teachers of Swedish. The data obtained from the interviews were analyzed in two ways. The first analysis focused on the way in which the prospective and novice teachers talked about text, writing, and the teaching of writing. The result shows that, at the beginning of the teacher education, prospective teachers focus on concrete aspects of text – such as syntax, punctuation and spelling – when they speak about text, writing, writing instruction, and assessment of student writings. In other words, they pay special attention to local text levels. At the end of the teacher education  programme, prospective teachers focus on aspects of text structure such as outline, the structure of paragraphs, coherence and cohesion. Certain aspects that the students pay special attention to are mentioned by the novice teachers, but these aspects are not central to them. Instead, novice teachers give special attention to the global text levels such as context, receivers and the purpose of the text, i.e. abstract aspects of text and writing. The pattern discerned shows a development that starts with a focus on the details at a local text level and expands into a more comprehensive view with a focus at a global level. The second analysis concerns the development of the knowledge base for the teaching of writing. This analysis focuses on two of the knowledge categories described by Lee S. Shulman (1986, 1987), namely subject matter knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge (PCK), both of which can be seen as central for the teaching of writing. The knowledge base manifested in the prospective teachers’ utterances mainly consists of subject matter knowledge, whereas the greater part of the knowledge base manifested in the teachers’ utterances consists of pedagogical content knowledge for the teaching of writing. The teachers also manifest a more complex subject matter knowledge and speak about writing instruction in a way which is characterized by conscious choices, reflection and metacognition. The analysis thus shows that the PCK for the teaching of writing is mainly developed in the teaching profession; in other words, after the teacher education programme is finished.
