Proteção da paisagem ferroviária: memória e identidade do bairro Estação São Bernardo (atual Santo André, SP) / Protection of the railroad landscape: memory and identity of the bairro São Bernardo Station (current Santo André, SP)

Passarelli, Silvia Helena Facciolla 03 November 2005 (has links)
Since the decade of 1980, it has been recurrent the adoption of practices of valuation and recuperation of cultural patrimony as a means of urban spaces renewal aiming at urban centers revitalization, by means of reinsertion of buildings and historical clusters at city’s daily life with new kinds of using, which adopts a development paradigm that is contradictory to urban renewal practices. Also in the municipality of Santo André, the public power has searched for alternatives of memory and cultural patrimony valuation early in the decade of 1990, as part of a process that had been started off ten years ago with public debates about the patrimony safeguard, widely registered by the local press. However, although the social and economical development guidelines of the local administration highlight the importance of the rescue of memory as a local identity’s affirmation, the reminiscent urban elements from São Bernardo´s former ‘Bairro da Estação’ have not been receiving adequate attention by urban development policies for the unfamiliarity with the value of innumerable buildings and public lots spread in the city, or even for the lack of preservation legal tools. This thesis proposes, as work hypothesis, to state that there is permanence of reminiscents of the 'station-town' establishing memory, which has been formed around the train station of Santo André and are worthy of identification, valuation and protection, as it has been stated by documents and resolutions from international congresses and seminars on cultural patrimony protection. From the identification of urban elements that are identified with the railway scape, this work proposes a reflection on the practices of valuation and preservation of the urban environment patrimony experienced in the municipality of Santo André, and proposes alternatives to the safeguard of the local cultural patrimony.

Connecting people, food & place: sustaining community, identity, and well-being through a multisensory, local food centre

Shwaluk, Janine 01 February 2010 (has links)
This interior design project involves investigation into the philosophies of the Slow Food Movement and how they may inspire and inform the design of a social space that fosters a connection between local people, food and place. This socio-cultural connection is implemented through the design of a concentrated, local food centre within the urban environment of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Investigation into interior design strategies which foster social interaction, taste education and sensory engagement contribute to the design of a space where the local food culture of southern Manitoba can be experienced in its authenticity. By combining the public spaces of food which contribute to the contemporary streetscape, with those that exist within the interior environment, this local food centre design aims to promote local identity and facilitate multisensory social engagement that sustains relationships, community, and the environment over time.

The focus of this dissertation lies in the theme of temporalities, thought here in its multiple dimensions, constructions, perceptions, representations and uses. To approach this universe, I start from the narratives of the inhabitants of Borá, a small municipality located in the interior of the State of São Paulo (West region), considered by IBGE (2010) as the smallest population in Brazil, totaling 805 time. Most of the Boraan population (as they are identified) is composed of families descendants of the pioneers who populated the locality in the first decades of the twentieth century. Over the years, more families have come to the city by forming a sociability based on kinship ties and alliances based on neighborhood relations. This apparently cohesive universe was marked by a process of demographic, economic, social and cultural transformation due to the advance of the sugar-alcohol agribusiness in the region. Years earlier, between 2003 and 2004, an old sugar and alcohol processing plant located in the limits of the municipality resumed its activities. In addition to the local workforce, in the harvest seasons, the mill hired workers from other states, generating a migratory movement to Borá. In 2013, a housing complex was inaugurated to accommodate these workers and their families. In the same year, a significant increase in population was registered in Borá, being no longer the smallest in the country. In view of this, we turn our gaze to the universe of understanding of the local inhabitants (I refer to the older families and other residents prior to the resumption of the activities of the plant), with the purpose of reflecting on the narrative forms of the changes and temporal meanings involved in the notions of belonging. To carry out this study, I draw on the ethnographic data produced in the field work carried out in Borá between the years 2011-2013, the bibliographical research and analyzes undertaken between 2014-2016.

Global-local consumer identities as drivers of global digital brand usage

Makri, Aikaterini, Papadas, Karolos-Konstantinos, Schlegelmilch, Bodo B. January 2018 (has links) (PDF)
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to represent the first empirical attempt to explore global-local consumer identities as drivers of global digital brand usage. Specifically, this study considers a unique category of digital products, social networking sites (SNS), and develops a set of hypotheses to assess the mechanism through which location-based identities influence the actual usage of global SNS (Facebook and Instagram). Moreover, cross-country variations are investigated under the lens of developed vs developing countries. Design/methodology/Approach: Cross-country surveys in a developed (Austria) and a developing country (Thailand) were conducted. Data collected from 425 young adults were analyzed using SEM techniques in order to test a set of hypotheses. Findings: Results show that in Thailand, users with a global identity enjoy participating in global SNS more than their counterparts in Austria. In addition, consumers with a local identity in Thailand demonstrate less pleasure when participating in global SNS than their counterparts in Austria, and consequently are less inclined to use global SNS. Practical implications: Findings provide digital marketers with useful insights into important strategic decisions regarding the selection and potential adaptation of global digital brands according to the country context. Originality/value: This research is the first to extend the location-based identity research in the context of global digital brands, explain how global-local identities predict SNS usage through an engagement mechanism and investigate cross-country variations of this mechanism.

Weber, Roswithia January 2006 (has links)
This is a study of the relationship between history, identity and tourism in the cities that constitute the touristic project called Romantic Route, in Rio Grande do Sul. It analyzes how history and identitary constructions have been used to structure tourism, considering the context before the Project was developed, especially from the 1950s until the present time. The study focuses on the circumstances that have favored what can be presently identified as ethnical revival; the identitary homogenization as a process that has been present in different contexts; the relationships between rural and urban; and the relationships between regional and local identity in an inter-ethnical context.
