Trans Terrains: Gendered Embodiments and Religious Landscapes in Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Esch, David B 26 March 2015 (has links)
Transgendered Indonesians live in the fourth most populated nation in the world with more Muslims than any other country. This thesis summarizes an ethnography conducted on one religiously oriented male-to-female transgender community known in the city of Yogyakarta as the waria. This study analyzes the waria’s gender and religious identities from an emic and etic perspective, focusing on how individuals comport themselves inside the world’s first transgender mosque-like institution called a pesantren waria. The waria take their name from the Indonesian words wanita (woman) and pria (man). I will chart how this male-to-female population create spaces of spiritual belonging and physical security within a territory that has experienced geo-religio-political insecurity: natural disasters, fundamentalist movements, and toppling dictatorships. This work illuminates how the waria see themselves as biologically male, not men. Anatomy is not what gives the waria their gender, their feminine expression and sexual attraction does. Although the waria self-identity as women/waria, in a religious context they perform as men, not women.

These processes mean that new forms of production administration and managing the work force have been created and they have changed both working relationships and working conditions for those who work for contracted out companies. This study intends to show that contracted out workers, although part of the bank production system, are not actually part of the banks. The expansion of the automation and the innovations in information technology facilitated the implementation of the processes of outsourcing in paper check clearing process and the bank's back office operations. Contracted out workers do not have workers' rights and are not protected by employment legislation. These changes demand rethinking of union dynamics as they pose new challenges to trade union officers because they directly interfere with the organization and representation of contracted out workers / Essa dissertação trata dos processos de terceirização no setor bancário na década de 90 até o ano de 2002 articulados aos processos de reestruturação produtiva.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Raquel Simioni.pdf: 2107045 bytes, checksum: 0dadb3940e17669ea7a07463fcfe1389 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-08-29 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This research aimed to chemically study the secondary metabolites from inflorescences and leaves of male and female specimens of three species from the genus Baccharis: B. rufescens, B. pentodonta and B. tridentata. The plant materials were hydrodistilled for the collection and analysis of the obtained essential oils by GC/MS/FID, UV-Vis, IR and 1H and 13C NMR. The column chromatographic fractionation of the essential oil from male specimens of B. rufescens led to the isolation of two sesquiterpene alcohols, namely spathulenol and (E)-nerolidol, and the ketone 4,7(11)-amorphadien-8-one, which was obtained for the first time making it possible to study its structure using 2D NMR techniques. The essential oils of female specimens of B. rufescens were analyzed by 13C NMR, confirming the presence of (E)-nerolidol and the absence of the mentioned ketone. The oils of male and female specimens of B. pentodonta were very similar, presenting the major sesquiterpenes spathulenol, epiglobulol, viridiflorol, (+)-torreyol and α-cadinol. Likewise, the compositions of the essential oils from male and female specimens of B. tridentata were very similar, showing spathulenol as the major component, followed by caryophyllene oxide and (+)-torreyol. The aqueous extract remaining after the steam distillation of essential oils from B. tridentata was subjected to extraction with chloroform and then with ethyl acetate at pH 8 and pH 4. The extract obtained with ethyl acetate at pH 8 was analyzed by UV-Vis and shift reagents were added, making it possible to observe the presence of a flavanone whose 1H and 13C NMR spectra indicate that this substance is eriodictyol. The extract was chromatographed on a column of silica and structure of eriodictyol was carried out by UV-Vis, IR and 1H and 13C NMR. The ethyl acetate extract at pH 4 was analyzed by UV-Vis and 1H and 13C NMR, verifying the likely presence of 3-caffeoylquinic acid, 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid and 4,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid.

An analysis of phonotactic behaviour in the cricket Gryllus bimaculatus

Sarmiento-Ponce, Edith Julieta January 2019 (has links)
This thesis represents a comprehensive examination of the phonotactic behaviour (i.e. attraction to sound) of the female Gryllus bimaculatus under laboratory conditions. Chapter 2 is the first study to analyze the effect of substrate texture on walking performance in crickets. Substrate texture is found to play an essential role in the phonotactic responses of G. bimaculatus. Smooth substrate texture has a detrimental effect due to slipping, whereas a rough texture results in optimal walking performance due to the friction with the walking legs. Chapter 3 represents the first detailed lifetime study analysing phonotaxis in crickets. My results demonstrate that the optimal age to test phonotaxis in G. bimaculatus females is from day 7 to 24 after the final moult. I also found that selectiveness was persistent with age. These findings contradict the female choosiness hypothesis. This study is also the first to describe the effect of senescence on phonotaxis in insects, as responsiveness decreases with age. Chapter 4 compares the phonotactic behaviour of female crickets from different laboratory-bred colonies. From six tested cricket lab colonies, I found three groups statistically different from each other. Females raised under laboratory conditions at the University of Cambridge and Anglia Ruskin University were most reponsive at a frequency of 4.5 kHz, whereas females bred in Tokushima University in Japan were tuned towards a higher frequency of 5 kHz. These results suggest a degree of artificial allopatric speciation. Comparisons with crickets bred under low-quality conditions in a local pet shop demonstrate a loss of responsiveness, indicating that breeding conditions have a direct effect on phonotactic responsivity. Chapter 5 is the first study to report the presence of phonotaxis in males of G. bimaculatus. Previously it was unknown if G. bimaculatus males were able to perform phonotaxis, given that they were only recognised as endurance signal producers. In the present study, only 20% of the studied males (N=70) performed a weak phonotactic response. This finding has potential ecological implications in terms of male cricket territory establishment, and male-male interactions in the wild, which are discussed. Chapter 6 explores the song pattern recognition of the female G. bimaculatus by changing the duration of either the first, second or third pulse of the chirps. A long first pulse decreased the phonotactic response whereas phonotaxis remained strong when the third pulse was long. Chirps with three pulses of increasing duration of 5, 20 and 50 ms elicited phonotaxis, but the chirps were not attractive when played in reverse order. The data are in agreement with a mechanism in which processing of a sound pulse has an effect on the processing of the subsequent pulse, as outlined in the flow of activity in a delay-line and coincidence-detector circuit.

Santos, Simone Olsiesky dos January 2011 (has links)
This thesis aims at analysing gender and male and female teacher representations by animated television series “The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy” and “Rugrats”, especially considering their association with humour. We have used the poststructuralist Cultural Studies perspective with the help from other study fields such as communication and Lacanian psychoanalysis. For this objective we have selected, transcribed and analysed episodes of the films presented between 1991 and 2010 in channels CartooNetwork and Nickelodeon. Reflections have sought to examine representations of characters, especially children’s, linking them to concepts of gender, power, transgression, school, and others linked to them. When treating these questions, we have stressed on the use of humour as a potential textual tool, a device animated television series use to create stereotypes producing the infant-subject. Concerning gender, the key movement of this work was towards visibility for power relations shaped there, some by transgression, some by frailty. Concerning school and teacher representations, we have found some ruptures with the ‘established’ female teacher figure (affectionate, devoted and motherly). However, school and education representations are not different from the traditional model of the modern school, including serialisation, time and space organisation, stressing on content and grade evaluation. In other educational spaces we have analysed in particular episodes, there are clear relations of power, government and control. In sum, we have observed that, in discourses in the particular child-directed animated series, it is possible to view stereotypes producing male and female subjectivities, which act as cultural pedagogies.
