Média v českém výtvarném umění / Media in Czech Fine Arts

Ježková, Tereza January 2012 (has links)
The thesis Media in Czech Fine Arts deals with the relationship between media and fine arts. The thesis aims to find, among other things, whether media can be considered a distinct theme in arts. The objective, methodology, and resources utilized are all addressed in the first chapters. A brief overview of how the topic was addressed in foreign fine arts follows; this was the main inspiration for the pursuit of this work. The main part consists of a selection of works of art where the topic of media appears and where the author of the work was a Czech fine artist. The thesis focuses mainly on painting, drawings, graphic arts and sculpture. The artworks are sorted into several subheads, primarily by the topic they portray, then chronologically. Each thematic unit makes a connection between history and theory of media, and the history of art.

Ética e comunicação : prazeres fugazes, amores eternos, corpos sedutores e saudáveis na recepção dos discursos de Men s Health e Nova / Ethics and communication: the fleeting pleasures, love eternal, seductive and healthy bodies in receipt of discourses of Men's Health and New

We approach the object through a transversal dialogue between the communication and social sciences fields and the philosophy of Michel Foucault. From this perspective, we suggest as a theoretical proposition that mass media influences its receptors subjective constitutions an influence upon the constitution of their individual self. This influence operates mainly through norms : internalized rules that guide the individuals in a natural-like fashion Men s Health and Nova, publications with prescriptive contents, are part of this operation. The norm, however, is not inescapable: Foucault offers an alternative to its objective restriction of our subjective identities: the dimension of ethics, an existential dimension in which we create our own selves through a free self-reflected intellectual exercise. After establishing our theoretical premises, we thoroughly investigate the way through which the magazines discourses operate (analyzing 6 issues of each one of them), defining what we called their physiology . Our aim is to answer the following problem: is there, in the reception of the discourses contained in these magazines, an ethical dimension? For that we interviewed 21 receptors, to find out that they conduct their lives in a complex power play that is strongly established upon norms, either to affirm or deny them. Men s Health and Nova operate along with many other social instances in a regime where its receptors think themselves based on pre-established criteria, where ephemeral pleasures are desired by some and criticized by all, while the ideal of eternal love is also a unanimous intention. At the same time, all value a specific kind of healthy body that is, at the same time, beautiful and sexy. None of that, though, is perceived though an exercise of self-reflection, free pondering. In other words, none of that comes from an ethical dimension / Este trabalho tem por objeto a recepção dos discursos das revistas Men s Health e Nova.

This dissertation sought to move away from a view of a presumptive receiver, conjecturing possible interpretations for the media products, listening to the real receivers and knowing the true appropriation / positioning. The central hypothesis is that the Angolan families have a real and critical diagnosis of the surrounding situation from Telejornal (main news service of the country) but can not reach a libertarian conclusion. For the theoretical-methodological support, we have contributions from Jurgen Habermas, Stuart Hall, Raymond Williams, Boaventura de Sousa Santos, Laurence Bardin, Ricardo Soares de Oliveira, Jesus Martin-Barbero and Nilda Jacks. The research method used is the Family Mediation Technic that involves ethnography, television reception and in-depth Interview. The main result is that there is a production of sense capable of forming critical public spheres, but this does not happen due to the existence of fences - to a party-state and to the Cultural (patriarchal) fence. It is an empirical research that was carried out in the city of Luanda - capital of the Republic of Angola.

Life Is Strange a mediated game reception analysis / Life Is Strange : a mediated game reception analysis

Mänder, Leili January 2017 (has links)
In this essay a mediated video game reception of the game Life Is Strange is made, with the purpose of examining the players' meaning-making processes from a gender perspective. The materials of this essay consist of videos from six different YouTube channels where each player film themselves whilst playing through Life Is Strange as a way to review and share the gaming experience. The results show how the meaning-making processes are littered with gender discourses and affects. The affects offset discourses by amplification or by revealing discord between available cultural narratives and the simulated reality of the game. Even though the game highlights themes like female-centric relationships, suicide, euthanasia, lesbianism, socio-economic circumstances, social accountability and men's violence against women, it successfully delivers highly involving, enjoyable and appreciated gameplay experience. The game is shown to provide players with a platform around which they can connect and continue to discuss, raise awareness and produce knowledge around these important topics. The fan generated culture will in turn, reach a much larger audience than the game sales numbers reflect. /
Treated in seminar at Stockholm University

The case of a community radio in Senegal

Diagne, Yacine 19 May 2014 (has links)
Aspiring to “give a voice” to the poor people of Pikine, a suburb of the Senegalese capital, “Local Debate” is an interactive political programme of the community radio Air’Jeunes, created in the late nineties at the initiative of youth associations in the Dakar region with support from a major Canadian NGO. This thesis explores the use of this programme by local citizens in three main areas where activists and proponents of participatory democracy are committed to developing citizen action mechanisms, aiming to correct the defects and shortcomings under the democratic ideal of representative government: the role of citizens in the production system of local public goods, symbolic relationships between elected leaders and electors, and the public space for debate on public policies and the actions of representatives. Based on an ethnographic field study conducted in three phases between 2006 and 2011 in the radio production studio and the show’s listening sites, it appears that, even if the programme has enabled forms of contestation of local authority to be voiced publicly without mediation, the realisation of the original project faced an unfavourable local context marked by the lack of resources given to local officials to exercise their newly decentralised powers and a local political journalism polarised around two dominant forms, leaving little room for debate: the antagonistic journalism of big private groups and small informal press, and the legitimising journalism of the public service group. Despite their militant commitment to the project, radio staff and hosts whose social origins and educational backgrounds distance them from the forms of consumption of information goods and activities of Pikine’s inhabitants, as well as the dynamic activities of informal neighbourhood associations in the suburbs of Dakar, have gradually yielded to forces of attraction exercised by mainstream private radios, influencing their vision of their professional future and, in turn, their journalistic practice .
