In turn, this imaginarium originates in a specific social-cultural context. Considering men as symbolic beings, they look for the reason of their existence by attribuing meaning to objects. Those meanings are interpreted by society, creating values, behaviors and cultural references. This work presents fundamental concepts about design and its presence in the social-cultural context, being design the language that interprets and re-signify the electronic game based on the collective imaginarium. / A presente pesquisa procura analisar o design como objeto gerador de respostas às expectativas do usuário (jogador) a partir do imaginário coletivo. Por sua vez, este imaginário, tem a sua origem em um determinado contexto sócio-cultural. Considerando o homem como um ser simbólico, este busca o sentido para sua existência por meio da atribuição de significados aos objetos. Tais significados são interpretados pela sociedade criando seus valores, comportamentos e referenciais culturais. Ao longo deste trabalho são apresentados conceitos fundamentais sobre o design e sua presença no contexto sócio-cultural, sendo o design, a linguagem que interpreta e resignifica, a partir do imaginário coletivo, um jogo eletrônico.

Challenges and Security Aspects of Blockchain Based Online Multiplayer Games​

Video gaming has always been a blooming industry. With the emergence of online multi- player video games , this industry’s worth have sky rocketed. Online multiplayer video games store data of player’s credentials, in-game progress, in-game virtual assets and payment details etc. Which mean security threats to these systems are nothing new and securing these games have always meant to protect player’s data from unauthorized breach. Integration of Blockchain technology in online multiplayer video games apart from other amazing features, provides a way to prove digital ownership of virtual assets with their verifiable scarcity. Trade of these in-game virtual assets have always been a goal for online multiplayer gaming companies, but there was none enough trust-able infrastructure available which can be relied on. Blockchain just solved that problem. It provided a platform for these asset’s secure and transparent transaction between players. Topic for our research not only consider the security challenges in online games but specifi- cally blockchain based online multiplayer games. This adaptation is still new and there is need of consideration of new security challenges. In this dissertation we try to bring out some important challenges related to security of blockchain based online multiplayer video games. There are currently no studies around security concerns and challenges of the integration of the online multiplayer video games in the emerging blockchain systems. In order to fill in the gap, this dissertation discusses and identifies two main security concerning questions related to this domain. Also this dissertation provides basic steps for expanding future research and application in this joint domain.

Computerspiele wiederum implizierten die Entstehung des eSports - eSport ist das Austragen von Wettkämpfen mittels Computerspielen. Bisherige Beiträge oder Analysen zu dieser neuen Sportart sind kaum vorhanden. Vorliegende Arbeit befasst sich mit einem Teilgebiet des eSports: dem Sponsoring. Ziel ist es, die Situation des eSport Marktes im Allgemeinen zu beschreiben sowie Schwierigkeiten und Entwicklungen für das Sponsoring herauszuarbeiten.

[pt] Como no passado, as crianças e os jovens de hoje gostam de jogar e brincar, mas indo além das formas tradicionais, as gerações contemporâneas também jogam e brincam de novas maneiras, já que a invenção do computador e a propagação da conexão em rede difundiram não só a tecnologia digital, como o que pode ser considerado o jogo ou brinquedo mais complexo inventado até hoje: o jogo eletrônico. No entanto, em contraste ao consagrado sucesso comercial da indústria de jogos eletrônicos, ainda estamos buscando estabelecer uma linguagem unificada e um vocabulário capaz de descrever a experiência do jogador. O objetivo geral do trabalho foi realizar um estudo psicológico – apoiando-se nos resultados de uma pesquisa de campo qualitativa sobre a experiência de 10 jovens cariocas nos jogos multiplayer – para compreender o que está em jogo quando o jogador vai além das estratégias planejadas pelo designer, descobre táticas e ocorre um interjogo entre jogo e jogador. Objetivamente, o trabalho fornece uma conceituação psicológica sobre o ato de jogar e brincar, capaz de descrever a experiência nos jogos multiplayer, apoiada em diversos eixos conceituais gerados a partir das categorias de análise das entrevistas. A proposta é subsidiar caminhos para futuras diretrizes de design, e nortear a análise e o desenvolvimento de projetos que abram espaços para o interjogo entre a mágica proporcionada pelo jogo eletrônico e o brincar criativo do jogador. / [en] As always, new generations find enjoyment and fun through play. In addition to playing with traditional games and toys, however, today we can also create and discover new and unique experiences through play. The popularized spread of computers, digital networks, and distributed technology has invented the most complex game or toy yet: the video game. Yet for all the acclaimed commercial success of the video game industry, we are still searching for a unified language and vocabulary capable of describing these new player experiences. This dissertation presents a psychological study – based on the results of a qualitative field research with 10 young participants of multiplayer games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – of what is at play when the player goes beyond game strategies and discovers individual tactics. The study presents a psychological framework of the interplay between player and gameplay built upon several conceptual axes, which emerged from the categories of research analysis. The objective purpose of the psychological study was to support the future development of game design guidelines, and provide a framework for the research, production, and description of experiences that foster interplay between the magic of video games and the player s creative play.

This is due to the daily interaction of people in games called Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs). These communities are culturally diverse and permeated by social ties estabilished through different ways in the game s virtual world. The present research held a study on the communities found in World of Warcraft through social network analysis. The goal of this approach was to define a typology of social ties and study the behavioural patterns related to the structure of these networks. This involved the construction of an efficient data collecting system, as well as analysis tools. That particular methodology verified that this kind of organization can be characterized as an emergent adaptive complex system. To that end, different theories were utilized, such as graph theory, Kohonen networks algebra and software engineering. / Atualmente a popularidade mundial de jogos on-line tem resultado na formação de comunidades virtuais com centenas de pessoas. Isso se deve à interação diária das pessoas em jogos chamados Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs). Estas comunidades são culturalmente diversificadas e permeadas por laços sociais estabelecidos de diferentes maneiras no ambiente virtual do jogo. A presente pesquisa realizou um estudo de comunidades do jogo World of Warcraft por meio da abordagem da análise de redes sociais. O intuito desta abordagem foi definir uma tipologia de laços sociais e estudar padrões de comportamento vinculados à estrutura destas. Isso envolveu a construção de um sistema de coleta de dados eficiente desta rede, assim como ferramentas de análise. Com esta metodologia, verificou-se que este tipo de organização pode ser caracterizada como um sistema complexo adaptativo emergente. Para isso, foram utilizadas diferentes teorias, como a teoria dos grafos, redes de Kohonen, álgebra e engenharia de software.

The thesis is dedicated to the proper virtual economy setup of Massive Multiplayer Online Game to make the game competitive in this area to other products on the market. In addition to setting the economy on the example thesis includes a market analysis of computer and console games, comparison of virtual economy with real and comparison of the selected virtual economies based on defined criteria. The primary goal is to make a procedure for setting up the virtual economy and its verification. Another goals are the analysis of the games market, comparison of the games market economies and a demonstration of web game making. Game making is depended on its feasibility analysis, which is also included in the thesis. The work also verify the correctness of the settings according to the defined criteria.

Increase long-term retention by adding social features in mobile multiplayer games

This paper investigates if the social aspects of playing with friends and participate in clans can increase long-term retention for mobile games. Specifically for the game Edge of Combat developed by the company Level Eight. To gain knowledge about how the players and industry perceive these features, a background study was conducted. The study reveals that playing with friends increases long-term retention in mobile games. It also indicates that participating in clans increases long-term retention but the evidence is not that strong. The next phase of the project indicates that playing with friends also increases long-term retention in Edge of Combat. Finally, participating in clans were investigated more thoroughly. The industry is very positive towards clans but that does not seem to reflect the player’s opinions about clans. Because of this the research question ”Can clan participation increase long-term retention in mobile games?” can not be confirmed. That clan participation could increase long-term retention in Edge of Combat could not be confirmed either. However, to be certain of this more research is needed on clans in mobile games taking into account the demographics of the participants in the project.

vii, 124 p. / Despite the rise in participation and economic importance of online games as a media phenomenon, ever-growing virtual worlds that seemingly exist as "third places" for social interaction and relationship formation, there is little research on the experiences of gamers with harassment, discrimination, and hate speech. Though changes in the industry serve as evidence of shifting attitudes about female, GLBTQ, and non-white gamers, harassment and use of hate speech based on sex and sexual orientation continue to flourish unchecked in online games. This study explores the prevalence of homophobia and sexism in online games as expressed through "griefing" behavior used to police competitive spaces traditionally dominated by white, heterosexual men. Do MMORPGs enhance MMMCCL : Multi-Media Multi-Channel Communication Literacy

<p>Purpose/Aim: The aim of the paper is to find out if there is a correlation between playing MMORPGs and having better skills in using multi-channel communication.</p><p>Material/Method: A media-skill test was conducted in the internet testing the participants’ ability to respond to targets in three different channels and media at the same time. The results of the study where used for statistical comparisons of the different groups of participants sorted according to their media use.</p><p>Main results: People who use the internet more and who play computer games, especially MMORPGs, have a better Multi-Media Multi-Channel Communication Literacy. There is fast learning visible for people with a use of the respective medium of up to five hours a week. Playing makes you better, not playing a lot.</p>
