The Art of Learning and the Learning of Art through the Marriage of History and Innovation: A DC Museum and College of the ArtsStrohkorb, Jennifer Leigh 17 October 2013 (has links)
This project is a study of the process of human learning, specifically related to arts and culture, and how a community interacts with and creates its own art and memory.
Historically, the museum has functioned as a type of self-guided institute of higher learning for the public. It has been utilized to display and memorialize works of cultures throughout history. It has become a place where the public interacts with artifacts from cultures past and cultures present.
This project addresses the following: In addition to a museum's function of educating the public, can a museum function as a classroom or laboratory for tomorrow's artists and educators? Can museum visitors become part of the creative process? Can a college for fine art and museum studies become integrated creatively into a museum, generating mutual benefit for both institutions and the city? Can the present generation of artists and educators build upon the advancements and setbacks of the generation that went before it?
This thesis is written as a fiction story to best capture and communicate the process of experiential learning and the making of cultural memory. Some people and events are based on true facts; others have been changed, added to or omitted for the sake of a good story / Master of Architecture

Energikartläggning på Västerbottens museum / Energy mapping at Västerbottens museumNygårds Jakobsson, Adam January 2020 (has links)
This work dealt with energy mapping in 4 selected buildings at the Västerbottens Museum. The museum felt that their energy consumption was too high and wanted to investigate whether the consumption could be lowered. The aim of this report was to locate the systems and areas that consume a lot of energy and then find alternative options to lower the energy consumption. Early in the project, it was decided that the main system to be investigated was the ventilation system and its functions. The four buildings that was examined included 3 ventilation rooms. The ventilation rooms contained units that supplied ventilation air to premises with different requirements and specifications that were considered during the efficiency calculations. Three different alternatives have been investigated: Option 1 involved adjusting the unit’s settings (air flow and active hours) to lower the unit’s energy consumption. Option 2 involved replacing the heat exchanger in ventilation room 1 to increase heat recovery. Option 3 involved replacing the units that were the oldest in the ventilation system (the units in ventilation room 1) to new more energy efficient units. The results from calculations of these 3 options showed that option 1 meant a reduction in annual electricity and heat consumption. The electricity consumption decreased by 15 MWh over a year. Heat consumption decreased by 39 MWh over a year. This resulted in an annual cost savings of 47 000 SEK. Science the units are only adjusted, there was no expenditure in option 1. Option 2 resulted in that the annual heat consumption decreased by 54 MWh, which meant an annual cost saving of 42 000 SEK. This meant that the expense of 49 000 SEK that was required in option 2 was repaid in 1,2 years. Option 3 gave an annual energy saving of 64 MWh, which resulted in an annual cost saving of 49 000 SEK. This meant that the expense of 320 000 SEK in option 3 could be repaid in 6,5 years. Since the units in ventilation room 1 must be replaced in the future, the expense is inevitable. The conclusion was that option 3 together with option 1 was the optimal long-term solution for lowering the energy consumption. This because option 1 did not cost to apply in addition to the hours worked. Option 2 had a good repayment period, but because option 2 meant a large investment in an old system that will be demolished in the future, option 3 is considered more favorable. It is important to remember that if option 3 is carried out, the savings in ventilation room 1 in option 1 must be reconsidered as the units are replaced.

The Capital Park Steam and Railway History Museum: Implementing a Holistic Methodology for Contextual Museum Architectural Design - The Rovos Rail EstateDu Plessis, Tara January 2020 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on the development of the site in and around Rovos Rail. Rovos Rail is a unique train travel company cut off from the public view. The project context is located in Capital Park adjacent to Transnet Avenue. The primary purpose of the site was to accommodate railway-related workshop facilities that provisioned and maintained the trains and carriages on their way to the industries of Johannesburg. Rovos Rail has done much in terms of the conservation of railway history in Pretoria. This ambition should be celebrated and built upon. It is necessary to promote the conservation of the rich railway history of South Africa and understand the impact thereof on the contemporary landscape. In order to understand the significance of contextualism, research based on philosophical, theoretical and practical lenses will be conducted. The argument relies on understanding the context through these different lenses. The historical significance of the site is celebrated. The dissertation places it within the historical continuum of both the larger context of Pretoria and the smaller context of the surrounding community. Through the design of a Steam Locomotive Museum next to Rovos Rail, a holistic approach, based on contextualism theories and South African case studies is illustrated. The project proposal establishes a physical connection with the historically significant structures of the site and emphasises the historical layers. Inspiration is drawn from the existing railway lines, the existing platform, ecological features and buildings. The chosen function, that of the museum, intends to act as the arbitrator for the diversity of narratives of an ever-evolving landscape, be it manmade or natural. The museum represents a prototype for the methodology proposed. The design aims to facilitate the conservation of railway history, the education of the importance thereof and enticement to develop these sites to represent a prosperous future. / Mini Dissertation (MArch (Prof))--University of Pretoria, 2020. / Architecture / MArch (Prof) / Unrestricted

Museo Arqueológico y Antropológico del Norte Chico / Archaeological and Antropological Museum of Norte ChicoDíaz Cárdenas, Sharon Alejandra 19 May 2020 (has links)
The museum is an equipment of cultural diffusion, which helps the development of the area where it is located, due to the cultural, social and architectural impact it generates. When raising this typology, the city will have a milestone where the culture and customs of the area will be preserved.
In this case, the type of museum proposed is a regional one dedicated to Archeology and Anthropology. In this way, the lifestyle and worldview of the pre-Hispanic cultures that inhabited the whole area of the North Chico will be put on display, likewise: the ceramics, human remains and the type of architecture; which are testimony to the aforementioned.
The expansion of the city without an adequate development plan affects these archaeological zones. In addition, the little information available to the population, lack of dissemination and value, make the archaeological areas are invaded, looted, and destroyed. In other cases, they are used as cultivation areas or have been dynamited and destroyed for future constructions; As an example we have the case of Vichama that until a few years ago was covered in garbage, however, it was recovered and is in the process of being restored.
For all the aforementioned, the creation of a museum for this area is considered, taking into account reference projects for the study of the operation of the aforementioned typology. Also, information about the meaning and application of the emphasis on architecture will be obtained, complying with national and international regulations. / Tesis

Muzeum umění v proměnách své sociální funkce / Art Museums: Changes in their Social FunctionČerná, Lucie January 2014 (has links)
Art museums still have an essential role, both for the art world and the wider society. This thesis deals mainly with their transformation and challenges they have to face in relation to contemporary society. It focuses on the development of museums, the transformation of values they embody and also on changes in normative expectations in conjunction with them. The paper also discusses the role of museums with increasing emphasis on their educational role, because this role could help museums to succeed in their current efforts to open to the wider audience. Today, these attempts to democratize represent crucial task of art museums. These efforts, however, depend on the concept of aesthetic taste which the paper also deals with. To be successful, it is desirable to view taste as a skill that can be cultivated through education. Since those who influence success in this field are museum professionals, this work deals also with their position within the museums and the art world and the strategies which are used by them. The fundamental shifts in art museums and their responses to the demands of the public occurred as a result of institutional critique that began in the 60's of last century. The new museology, critical curating and relational aesthetics can be included under this trend. As these...

Lokalhistoria och primärkällor i historieundervisningen i grundskolans senare del. : Museimaterial för undervisning i Nordöstra SkåneMedin, Anna January 2022 (has links)
The essay examines what material the museum in Northeast Skåne has produced that can be provided by the upper secondary schools in the area when teaching the subject of history. The thesis also studies how this material has an connection to local history or to primary sources. The survey was conducted by studying Hässleholm's museum and Regionmuseet Skåne with the help of interviews and digital material. The purpose of the survey is to fill a relatively unexplored area for the possibilities of teaching local history and the use of primary sources in the latter part of compulsory school in the area of Northeast Skåne.The survey showed that the two museums for the survey work in two different ways with materials that can be provided by the schools as pedagogical teaching materials. Either through digital materials, study boxes or during guided museum visits. Both museums worked with materials that were locally based and primary sources.

Museums on Instagram - Engagement with audiences on social mediaAlgers, Maria January 2018 (has links)
This thesis will explore the engagement modes of museums on Instagram by looking at the content of 1230 posts published by forty museums in Sweden and New Zealand over a three month time period. The analysis will focus specifically on the museums intention behind each post, with the use of an analytical grid developed by Lotina and Lepik. The museums’ invitations for engagement and participation with their audience will be the main focus of the study, drawing on concepts of civic engagement and the role of public institutions as democratic forums where collaboration is championed. The results indicate a trend of a low number of invitations for the public to collaborate and engage with the museum, while marketing is instead the most common engagement mode, in particular among art museums. The concluding discussion reflects on these results, as well as the initial assumption that museums should be places for democratic collaboration.
