Among other factors, optimism has been shown to significantly influence the course of some diseases (cancer, HIV, coronary heart disease). This study investigated whether optimism of a patient before a total hip replacement can predict the functionality of the lower limbs 3 and 6 months after surgery. A total of 325 patients took part in the study (age: 58.7 years; w: 55%). The functionality was measured with the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities arthrosis index, and optimism with the Life Orientation Test. To analyse the influences of age, gender and optimism, general linear models were calculated. In optimistic patients, functionality improved significantly over time. The study showed a clear influence of dispositional optimism on the recovery after total hip replacement in the first 3 months after surgery.

Ferruccio Busoni (1866-1924) has a firmly established reputation as one of the giant pianists of his age, yet his compositions are largely neglected both in musicological circles and on the concert stage. A better understanding of his thought processes might lead to a greater appreciation of his art, and the acknowledgement of his reverence for the music of Bach is an important key to such an understanding. Busoni's Fantasia nach Bach and Toccata, although two decidedly dissimilar compositions in terms of purpose and conception, represent two manifestations of Busoni's respect for Bach, whether it be in the form of assimilating Bach's compositions into one of his own, or by creating an original work to the same mold as some of Bach's works.

The purpose of this study is to analyze sets of variations on Paganini's theme by three twentieth-century composers: Ferruccio Busoni, Ignaz Friedman, and Robert Muczynski, in order to examine, identify, and trace different variation techniques and their applications. Chapter 1 presents the purpose and scope of this study. Chapter 2 provides background information on the musical form "theme and variations" and the theme of Paganini's Twenty-fourth Caprice, Op. 1. Chapter 2 also deals with the question of which elements have made this theme so popular. Chapters 3,4, and 5 examine each of the three sets of variations in detail using the following format: theme, structure of each variation, harmony and key, rhythm and meter, tempo and dynamics, motivic development, grouping of variations, and technical problems. Chapter 6 summarizes the findings from this study and attempts to compare those elements among the three variations. Special attention is given to the application of the motivic cells, which are drawn from the original Paganini theme, in the development of succeeding variations. This study shows how these motivic cells contribute to the construction of new motives and melodies in each variation. Additionally, this study attempts to examine each composer's efforts in expanding variation procedure to the areas of structures and tempo markings in succeeding variations.

Trotz der häufig anzutreffenden gesellschaftlichen Praxis, Kinder nach Abschluss des ersten Lebensjahres in eine Krippenbetreuung einzugewöhnen, ist bisher wenig bekannt, wie die Kleinst- und Kleinkinder selbst diese meist erste Transition erleben, verarbeiten und mitgestalten. Im Mittelpunkt der psychoanalytisch-pädagogisch ausgerichteten Dissertation stehen die vielschichtigen, latenten Beziehungs- und Interaktionsprozesse im Dreieck Eltern - Kind - Kindheitspädagogin im Übergang zur Krippenbetreuung. Erstmalig zeigt die multiperspektivische Beobachtungsstudie die Besonderheiten der Eingewöhnung von Ein- bis Zweijährigen auf, die erhebliche Unterschiede von denen älterer Kinder aufweist. Aus der novellenartig gehaltenen Einzelfallstudie lässt sich ableiten, dass frühe Eingewöhnungsprozesse mit einer forcierten Selbständigkeitsentwicklung des Kindes einhergehen können. Anders als im familiären Gefüge des Aufwachsens muss das beobachtete einjährige Einzelkind vielfältige Herausforderungen im neuen, institutionellen Kontext bewältigen. Diese kommen einer Forcierung ihrer Selbständigkeit gleich. Ungeachtet dessen zeigt sich in dieser Arbeit, dass die frühe Transition mit ihrer unabdingbaren Trennungsdynamik auch progressive Entwicklungspotentiale für das Kind bereithält. Desweiteren lässt sich an diesem individuellen Einzelfall der frühe, ambivalente Übergang von einer Situation des Einzelkindes in der Familie hin zu einem Krippenkind in der institutionalisierten Kinderbetreuung untersuchen. Mit dem Einsatz der psychoanalytischen Beobachtungs- und Auswertungsmethode nach Bick/Tavistock-Konzept gelingt ein seltener Einblick in die frühe Kinderbetreuung, der belegt, dass es sich bei der frühen Krippenbetreuung um ein hoch komplexes und konfliktreiches Feld handelt. / Despite of the common social practice of bringing toddlers to the day care center in their first year of life, there is just little profound knowledge of this topic. Especially the children´s feelings, experience and active participation of day care entry and their setting-in processes. This psychoanalytic-pedagogical thesis will focus on the multifaceted and complex latent interaction triangle of parents - child - childcare during adapting to day care. For the first time this multi-perspective observational study is pointing out the particular characteristics of one and two year old children, within this transition to day care process and its significant differences regarding older children. From this thesis, based on a individual case study can be deduced that an early childcare transition process correlate with forced independence and autonomy development. This work illuminates which different strains the one year old child had to challenge in the context of an institutionalized group care system compared to the family-related environment. Nevertheless the conclusions of this thesis take the progressive development potential for the child into account, that result of the interpersonal relations of the transmission and separation process. Based on one individual case study of an early, ambivalent transition from an only child in the family circle to the institutionalized day care nursery and by the methods of psychoanalytic observation and evaluation (Bick/Tavistock-Concept) this work provides a glimpse behind the scenes of the early childcare adapting process. It provides an unprecedented perspective for latent interactions and relations during this enter out-of-home-care. This clearly demonstrates the complexity, conflict-prone and controversy of the early child care topic.

One charter school’s path to tracking and pushing for privileged passage is examined. The school as it increased in size began to track students first by grade level and then by ability. Realizing that moving mathematics out of the main school program compromised the teaching ideals of the school and potentially student learning. The school has embarked on a program to create a place-based, integrated curriculum developed around mathematics so that mathematics can be reintroduced to multi-age classrooms. Examining the data in terms of trust, size and the behaviors of administrators, teachers and parents at this school in this process are highlighted.

The Slovenian painters’ collective IRWIN, founded in 1983 in Ljubljana and co-founder of the NSK (i.e. Neue Slowenische Kunst) organization, has been engaged in a series of projects of active and concrete intervention in social and historical contexts in the decade that redefined the status of art in Eastern Europe. Ever since IRWIN confronts the art world with the EAST ART MAP (EAM), a map of artworks from Eastern Europe between 1945 and 2000, various provocative questions come up: regarding the selection within curatorial practice, the intrusion of artists in the field of art theory and historiography, the gap between the apparent dominant Western and assumed backward Eastern art market or – not least – the challenge of the participative integration of art observers and users. The interview with Miran Mohar and Borut Vogelnik focuses on the issues raised within the EAM project that are surfacing in current projects like the NSK State in Time (since 1992) and its diversifications, questioning the challenge of participation back to the 1990ies till now.

In dieser Dissertation wird eine Suche nach einem angeregten $b$ Quark, $b^*$, durchgeführt. Für diese $b^*$ wird eine anomale Kopplung an Bosonen aus dem Standard Modell vorhergesagt. Diese Kopplung führt zu der Produktion in hochenergetischen Proton-Proton Kollisionen. In der Suche zielen wir auf Ereignisse, bei denen eines der zwei $W$ Bosonen in ein Elektron oder Muon zerfällt und das andere in ein Hadronenpaar. Da es nur ein Neutrino in diesem Prozess gibt, kann das ganze Ereigniss kinematisch rekonstruiert werden. Damit ist es möglich, die Masse des $b^*$ als diskriminierende Variable zu verwenden. Als Datenquelle dienen die Daten, die der ATLAS Detektor in den Jahren 2015 und 2016 bei Proton-Proton Kollisionen mit einer Schwerpunksenergie von $\sqrt s = \SI{13}{\tera\electronvolt}$ aufgezeichnet hat. Dabei entspricht diese Datenmenge einer integrierten Luminosität von $\L_{int} = \SI{36.1}{\femto\barn^{-1}}$. Da die Analyse auf hochmassige $b^*$ abziehlt, kann man davon ausgehen, dass das Hadronenpaar aus dem $W$ Zerfall in einen Jet mit großen Radius passt. Es wurde kein signifikanter Überschuss über den Untergrund gefunden. Damit können nur obere Ausschlussgrenzen bezüglich der Wirkungsquerschnitte in dem entsprechenden Zerfallskanal abgeleitet werden. Unter Annahme von einer Kopplungskonstanten von 1, sind Zerfälle von $b^*\to Wt$ bis zu einer Masse $m_{b^*,\mathrm{obs}}= \SI{2.5}{\tera\electronvolt}$ ausgeschlossen, wobei erwartet wurde, dass die Ausschlussmasse bei $m_{b^*,\mathrm{exp}}= \SI{2.4}{\tera\electronvolt}$ liegen würde. / A search for an excited $b$ quark, $b^*$, in events containing a top quark and a $W$ boson is investigated. These $b^*$ are predicted to have some anomalous couplings to Standard Model bosons aiding the production in high energy proton-proton collisions. The search is aiming for events, where one of the two $W$ bosons decays into an electron or muon, while the other decays hadronically. With only one neutrino, the event can be kinematically fully reconstructed. This enables the use of the mass of the $b^*$ as the discriminant variable. The data source under investigation is the data taken by the ATLAS detector at the LHC accelerator in the years 2015 and 2016 at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt s = \SI{13}{\tera\electronvolt}$. The combined dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $\L_{int} = \SI{36.1}{\femto\barn^{-1}}$. The analysis targets high mass excited $b^*$ quarks, where the products of the hadronically decaying $W$ are contained within a large-radius jet. No significant excess over the expected background is observed and upper limits on the cross-section times branching ratio and coupling limits are derived. Assuming unit coupling, $b^*$ decaying into $Wt$ are excluded up to $m_{b^*,\mathrm{obs}}= \SI{2.5}{\tera\electronvolt}$, with an expected exclusion limit of $m_{b^*,\mathrm{exp}}= \SI{2.4}{\tera\electronvolt}$.
