The Power of the Tower: Contesting History at Bear Lodge/Devils Tower National Monument

Kramer, Anna Marie 01 January 2016 (has links)
Bear Lodge/Devils Tower National Monument, a spectacular rock formation in northeastern Wyoming, has a multiplicity of meanings, not all of which were fully acknowledged until the 1990s. It is widely known as a geologic wonder, the first national monument, a marker of local and pioneer heritage, and a premier rock climbing area. In the 1980s and ‘90s, however, the National Park Service began to acknowledge that the Tower also holds cultural and historical meaning for the Northern Plains tribes, dating back long before the colonization of the American West. Some of the tribes expressed to the Park Service that they were offended by rock climbers desecrating the Tower, a sacred site, leading the Park Service to seek to compromise between these competing uses of this public land. The controversy over climbing at Bear Lodge/Devils Tower was, and remains, a debate over history, and this thesis examines the historical foundations for the discourses of climbers, local white residents, tribal members, and the Park Service, as these various groups asserted their claims to this public space. This thesis contends that the language used by climbers and local white residents in arguing against the Park Service’s accommodation of tribal cultures and beliefs appropriated the languages of spirituality and tradition used by the tribes, and sought to delegitimize the tribal claims to the Tower. The Park Service is complicit in controlling the discourses surrounding the Tower and erasing the traditions and complex history of the Northern Plains tribal ties to this sacred place.

A standalone web app created with Wordpress, is it possible? : Development of a Web Application / En självständig webb app skapad i wordpress, går det? : Utveckling av en webb applikation

Hindemo, Frida January 2016 (has links)
This paper aims to examine what the differences is between the three application types, native, hybrid and web. The main focus will be placed on the web app and investigate whether it could be an alternative to native and hybrid app. To explain what a web app has the capacity to do, a web app is created in wordpress. Web development is moving forward, which is obviously positive. The problem may be, however, for companies that come from a completely different industry and who wish to develop a new web solution for their company. A native app can be a very expensive investment and it is far from all companies that can pay this. This study wants to find out if a web app, could be an alternative to the native app. Furthermore, the report will examine what the possibilities are for a web app and what existing web apps there is today. Furthermore, a simple price comparison between the different app types to be made.

To fix what’s not broken : repair strategies in non-native and native english conversation

Plejert, Charlotta January 2004 (has links)
The thesis investigates conversations involving native speakers and non-nativespeakers of English. The non-native speakers partaking in the study have a welldeveloped knowledge of the foreign language. The study is particularly concernedwith the function and interactional relevance of repair strategies that interlocutorsemploy when they talk to each other. The results of the analyses highlight issuessuch as participants’ self-representations as competent speakers, the notion “nonnativeness”,and language learning, relating to current developments within conversationanalytic research on second/foreign language conversations. Comparisonsbetween non-native and native speakers are made, highlighting similarities as wellas di¡erences in participants’ use of repair strategies. The study adopts a conversation analytic framework but is also in¤uenced bystudies of second/foreign language acquisition. Conversation analytic research has, until recently, dealt with conversations involving non-native speakers who have alimited or intermediate command of the second/foreign language. Repair behavioursof advanced foreign language users are thus a little investigated area. Whereasnon-native speakers with limited experience in using the second/foreign languageoften employ repair in order to solve problems that are related to their linguisticknowledge, such as ¢nding or knowing words and constructing utterances that areunderstandable in the context in which they occur, this thesis shows how an increasedknowledge of the foreign language involves a shift in focus as repair is carriedout, i.e. repair is used to address problems of a linguistic as well as of a socialnature. Since an increased knowledge of a foreign language is accompanied by an increasein the range of jobs that repair strategies do, “doing repair” is an importantpart of the development of non-native speakers’ interactional and linguistic competence.

Lost in Translation : Speech recognition and memory processes in native and non-native language perception / Förlorat i Översättning : Taluppfattning och minnesprocesser på modersmål och ett andra språk

Kilman, Lisa January 2015 (has links)
This thesis employed an integrated approach and investigated intra- and inter-individual differences relevant for normally hearing (NH) and hearing-impaired (HI) adults in native (Swedish) and non-native (English) languages in adverse listening conditions. The integrated approach encompassed the role of cognition as a focal point of interest as well as perceptualauditory and linguistic factors. Paper I examined the extent to which proficiency in a non-native language influenced native and non-native speech perception performance for NH listeners in noise maskers compared to native and non-native speech maskers. Working memory capacity in native and non-native languages and non-verbal intelligence were also assessed. The design of paper II was identical to that of paper I, however the participants in paper II had a hearingimpairment. The purpose of paper III was to assess how NH and HI listeners subjectively evaluated the perceived disturbance from the speech- and noise maskers in the native and nonnative languages. Paper IV examined how well native and non-native stories that were presented unmasked and masked with native and non-native speech were recalled by NH listeners. Paper IV further investigated the role of working memory capacity in the episodic long-term memory of story contents as well as proficiency in native and non-native languages. The results showed that generally, the speech maskers affected performance and perceived disturbance more than the noise maskers did. Regarding the non-native target language, interference from speech maskers in the dominant native language is taxing for speech perception performance, perceived disturbance and memory processes. However, large inter- individual variability between the listeners was observed. Part of this variability relates to non-native language proficiency. Perceptual and cognitive effort may hinder efficient long-term memory encoding, even when stimuli are appropriately identified at a perceptual level. A large working memory capacity (WMC) provides a better ability to suppress distractions and allocate processing resources to meet assigned objectives. The relatively large inter-individual differences in this thesis, require an individualized approach in clinical or educational settings when non-native persons or people with hearing impairment need to perceive and remember potentially vital information. Individua  differences in the very complex process of speech understanding and recall need to be further addressed by future studies. The relevance of cognitive factors and language proficiency provides opportunities for individuals who face difficulties to compensate using other abilities.

Vztah mezi počtem druhů, teplotou, a úživností prostředí pro původní a nepůvodní druhy rostlin / Relationship between species diversity, temperature and productivity for native and non-native plant species

Szostoková, Kateřina January 2016 (has links)
Latitudinal gradient of diversity is typically being explained by the three main hypotheses: The Resources Limitation Hypothesis, The Speciation Rate Hypothesis and The Niche Conservatism Hypothesis. In my study I tested basic assumptions of these hypotheses using native and non-native vascular plants obtained from the new database GloNAF (Global Naturalized Alien Flora). I tested an effect of precipitation, NPP, temperature and historical velocity (difference in temperature and precipitation between the Last Glacial Maximum and present) on species richness. Given that the distribution of non-native species is among continents irregular (we can divide them into two groups - Australia with Europe and North America and South America with Africa and Asia), I tested the abovementioned relationships at both - global and continental scale. Species richness of native species increased with NPP, precipitation and temperature and decreased with the difference in temperature. The global distribution of non-native plants increased with precipitation and temperature velocity and decreases with temperature and precipitation velocity, although the results varied for particular continents. Unlike other studies the number of non-native species didn't correlate with the number of native plant species. Concurrently...

Jazykový management v procesu recepce literárních textů: perspektiva rodilého a nerodilého mluvčího češtiny / Language management in the process of reception of literary texts from the perspective of a native and a non-native speaker of the Czech language

Reuter, Magdalena Antonia January 2013 (has links)
This diploma thesis explores the possibility of mapping the reception of a literary text in terms of language management processes and in succession unveils the main differences in the perception of a literary text by a native opposed to a non-native speaker. The first three chapters treat the research methodology, which is based on Language Management Theory, Neustupný's approach to literary criticism through this concrete theory and single elements from formalism and structuralism. The research, which is described in chapters four to seven, focuses on the different moments of noting, evaluation and problem solving strategies realised by two readers of a modern Czech short story (one native and one non-native speaker). These processes are identified and analysed by the means of follow-up interviews. The aim of the thesis is to establish a complex methodology of identifying, describing and interpreting management processes which occur during the reception of a literary text and further to investigate the main characteristics that distinguish this process in the case of a native and a non-native recipient of the text.

La transmission du savoir pragmatique dans l’enseignement du français langue étrangère en contexte japonais / Teaching pragmatics to Japanese learners of French as a foreign language

Harada, Sanae 20 March 2012 (has links)
In communication between native and non-native speakers, pragmatic failures are not as easily recognizable as grammatical or phonetic errors, and therefore, they risk to lead to misunderstandings; generally speakers have no chance to repair ommunication problems. How do foreign language teachers identify and explain these pragmatic difficulties to the learners ? What are the possible means to teach pragmatics ? This study aims at answering these questions by associating the problems in the real interactions between French and Japanese speakers and those in the situations of teaching French as a foreign language in Japan. Concerning two speech acts (apology and refutation), the differences between French and Japanese are examined using various corpuses: books and blogs written by those who experienced both cultures, French and Japanese literature on manners and etiquette, and some sequences from movies. The study then deals with the three components of education : the textbook, the teacher and the learner. After an analysis of French textbooks published in Japan, interviews were conducted with teachers of French, and questionnaires were administered to Japanese learners. This study made clear the possibilities and the difficulties of teaching pragmatics, such as the way of incorporating stereotypes, the differences between native and non-native teachers, and the learners’ ability to be aware of pragmatic features even at beginner level.

Templatgesteuerte Reaktionen von Peptidnukleinsäuren

Roloff, Alexander 28 May 2014 (has links)
Reactions between reactive oligonucleotides that are aligned by complementary nucleic acid templates at high effective molarities have gained considerable attention in the field of nucleic acid diagnostics. They are capable of generating multiple signaling molecules per target, if the template-bound products are replaced by fresh reactants. However, since product molecules usually exhibit high template affinities, they impede the catalytic activity of the template (product inhibition). This work initially describes the development of a new approach that bypasses product inhibiton. To this end, a DNA-mediated PNA-ligation reaction was integrated in a PCR. The reaction was directly triggered by the template which was amplified during PCR. Furthermore, the reaction was successfully applied in single base-specific genotyping of genomic DNA. The limit of detection (30 template molecules) was several magnitudes lower compared to previous template-controlled reactions. In an alternative approach, new strategies to reduce product inhibition were developed. Template-mediated ligation-cyclization (“cycligation”) reactions generated cyclic ligation products that were characterized by significantly lower template affinities compared to their linear counterparts. The yields upon cycligation were higher than those from ligation reactions without cyclization. However, the increase in template affinity gained upon ligation of the reactants could not be completely compensated through product cyclization. Therefore, template-mediated transfer reactions were designed in which the DNA-template actuates the cyclization of non-ligated products. These were characterized by reduced template affinities compared to the linear reactants. The transfer-cyclization reactions produced higher yields than transfer reactions without a cyclization step, thereby confirming the successful reduction of product inhibition.

Neue Auxiliare für die Peptidfragmentverknüpfung

Haase, Christian 01 June 2010 (has links)
In this thesis approaches for convergent synthesis of peptides have been developed. In the extended native chemical ligation so far space demanding auxiliaries encumbered challenging condensations. Furthermore the required drastic acidolytic cleavage conditions were furthermore incompatible with many post-translational modifications. In the thesis a nouvelle less space demanding scaffold was scrutinized which allowed a milder basic cleavage. Therefore a small electron-accepting substituent was introduced that enabled the induction of an elimination reaction liberating the target peptide after the peptide ligation had taken place. Furthermore the applicability of the commercially available penicillamine as precursor of valine in the ligation-desulfurization strategy could be demonstrated. Finally the ligation with sequence internal cysteines was scrutinized. Herein it could be shown that certain peptides with cysteine in a distinctive position of the sequence preferable reacted in thioester-based condensation reactions.
