This researh aims: to investigate how the television news framing are built in broadcast news, through comparative analysis of two major Brazilian news programs, one from a commercial TV station and the other from a public TV station; 2) to study the role of the frames of the news programs during the coverage of a civil rights of citizenship violatin event. To achieve the goals, we chose to analyze the Journal Nacional, from Rede Globo TV, and the Jornal da Cultura, from TV Cultura de São Paulo, both running in the prime-time of Brazilian television. Set by Gitlin (1980, p. 6-7), media frames are persistent patterns of cognition, interpretation, and presentation, of selection, emphasis, and exclusion, by which symbol-handlers routinely organize discourse, whether verbal or visual. Thus, to frame means slecting a point of fact and highlight it, while the omissions may also be critical to conduct the audience. To highlight the frameworks of those different television stations, we chose the case of Morro da Providencia, Rio de Janeiro, in June 2008, which showed the involvement of the army in the deaths of three young men, and the reporting of political election propaganda made by Marcelo Crivella. The analysis shows that television news programs were very similar and focused on the informational aspect, not using this episode for the Brazilian citizenship education or to enforce human rights that have been violently violated

The object of study of this work is the citizenship issue, known as the possession of rights, and its relationship with journalism, considered fundamental to the effectuation of these rights because it has the symbolic power of agenda-setting and of framing themes, and it can also promote discussion in society. This research aims to understand how newspapers work in the consolidation of the citizenship and to investigate how the news frames are built - capable of presenting a version of the facts to the readers. Considering that, we opted for the comparative analysis of two newspaper, one nationwide circulation and another one regional. To exam the framings present in the narratives of these two newspapers, we chose the case of a teenager killed by policemen in Bauru, São Paulo, Brazil, in December 2007 because it was a serious human rights violation case since it was a crime committed by agents of the State against a boy. We divided our study into two steps: theoretical discussion and analysis of newspaper. First, we start discussing the concept of citizenship and it changes suffered in the course of history. Next, we wrote about the emergence of the press as a right of expression and the function of journalism to disseminate the citizenship rights. Then, we point out the role of ANDI in consolidating the rights of children and youth in the Brazilian news media. We deal with the journalistic process production by exposing the implications of the agenda-setting and the selection of the news, the criteria of newsworthiness, and the framing influence in the construction of reaity. Finally, a comparative analysis is presented based on the methodology of the framing analysis of the news published in both newspapers, concerning the case of the boy killed by the policemen. Thus, it was possible to observe that the newspaper fulfilled their social function of providing visibility... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

A Textual Analysis of News Framing in the Sri Lankan Conflict

Ratnam, Cheran 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate how local and foreign newspapers used the war journalism and peace journalism frames when covering the Sri Lankan civil war, and to uncover subframes specific to the conflict. The first part of the thesis provides an in- depth literature review that addresses the history of the conflict and media freedom in Sri Lanka. The newspaper articles for the textual analysis were selected from mainstream Sri Lankan and U.S newspapers: the Daily News (a state sponsored newspaper) and Daily Mirror from Sri Lanka, and the New York Times and Washington Post from the U.S. A total of 185 articles were analyzed and categorized into war journalism and peace journalism. Next, subframes specific to the Sri Lankan conflict were identified. The overall coverage is dominated by the peace journalism frame, and the strongest war journalism frame is visible in local newspaper articles. Furthermore, two subframes specific to the Sri Lanka conflict were identified: war justification subframe and humanitarian crisis subframe. In conclusion, the study reveals that in the selected newspapers, the peace journalism frame dominated the coverage of the Sri Lankan civil war. All in all, while adding to the growing scholarship of media framing in international conflicts, the study will benefit newspaper editors and decision-makers by providing textual analysis of content produced from the coverage of war and conflict during a dangerous time period for both journalists and the victims of war.

The human-nature relationship in news reporting on environmental issues : A qualitative framing analysis of three news programmes for children

Weber, Hannah Lena January 2021 (has links)
Humans depend on nature to survive and are simultaneously crossing planetary boundaries (Raworth, 2017). Humans’ relationship to nature is, according to constructionist theory, connected with natures’ framing in the public discourse, and therefore also through the media (Hansen,2019). This thesis focuses on the human-nature relationship on children’s news programmes. Through a qualitative framing analysis material of three news programmes was examined and four overarching frames were found, suggesting an ambiguous relationship of humans and nature.

War on the Media: The News Framing of the Iraqi War in the United States, Europe, and Latin America.

Pestalardo, Maria 06 May 2006 (has links) (PDF)
This study analyzes the framing of the war in Iraq (2003) during the week before and the week after the conflict started according to the media coverage of nine leading newspapers from United States, Europe, and Latin America. Through quantitative content analysis, the researcher answered seven research questions and analyzed the framing, sources, and approaches used by the newspapers in the news coverage of the conflict. The researcher compared the news coverage of each region and found that there were significant differences in the content of the war reporting according to the geographical area of the media. European and Latin American newspapers framed a "bigger and more balanced picture" in covering more sides of the war and quoting diverse sources while American media covered a narrower range of war perspectives and quoted coalition sources in almost all of their news stories and editorials.

EU in the news : Swedish depiction and coverage of the 2020 Special European Council Session

Welander, Albert January 2022 (has links)
This study takes on a descriptive quantitative content analysis as means to investigate how the Swedish media covered and depicted the Special European council session between 17th to 21st of July 2020. Based on Agenda Setting and News Framing theories, the study investigated three aspects of the meeting's news coverage: (1) The overall interest and focus put on the meeting, (2) the interest and focus put on individual issues pertaining to the meeting, and (3) the Swedish News Framing of the meeting. The study found a large interest by the Swedish newsrooms centered on the final day of the meeting. This is especially the case with the Swedish public service network who had an overall higher coverage pertaining to the meeting. The coverage of the meeting was also found to have mainly revolved around the Covid Relief fund, with other subjects present but with a secondary importance. The meeting was mainly framed based on the economic consequences as well as conflict within the meeting, with little focus on the human impact. The paper was also able to find a large difference in how the meeting was framed based on the individual newsrooms, with the public service differentiating itself from tabloid and quality press through its overall weaker framing.

Framing taiwan television news: a content analysis of protest news

Unknown Date (has links)
This study examines how Taiwan television news frames protest news by investigating the prevalence of 5 news frames identified in earlier studies on faming and framing effects: frames of attribution of responsibility, conflict, human interest, economic consequences, and morality. This study content analyzed 206 television news stories in the protest against president Ma Ying-jeou’s 100th day in office in August 30th, 2008. The results showed that, overall, the human interest frame was most commonly used in the television news, respectively followed by the attribution of responsibility, conflict, economic consequences, and morality. It also appeared that sensational presentation as popular outlets in Taiwan’s television news. The use of news frames not only was differenced from channels, but also in partisan stances taken by various channels.
