Gênero e sexualidade na revista Sexy : um roteiro para a masculinidade heterossexual

Câmara, Adriane Peixoto January 2007 (has links)
This dissertation aims to question the Sexy magazine as a script for the heterosexual masculinity. In order to do so, I selected the magazine’s twelve editions of the year of 2005. The theoretical referential of the work are the Feminist Studies and the Cultural Studies with a post-structuralist influence. This study works with a group of concepts, such as gender, sexuality, masculinity and representation. The resource that guided the approach with the empiric material was the analysis, along the magazine’s twelve editions, of everything that was shown to its male readers, such as reports about behavior, sexuality, trips, consumption, interviews, information on books, movies and DVD, besides the photographies of female nude, the main topic of the magazine. This work also looks at the relationship among the professionals who work in the magazine (men and women) and the possible readers, observing the development of a ‘teachinglearning’ relation that the magazine establishes with its male readers. This type of exploration of the empiric material, which looked for some regularities, enabled me to argue that the heterosexual masculinity - built culturally - is guided by the routes available in the market. In other words, the countless masculine magazines existent nowadays aim at the male entertainment, including the Sexy Magazine. There is a pedagogical relation with the masculine reader, a ‘teaching-learning’ relation concerning what means being a heterosexual man (in terms of preferences, including the sexual preferences), especially how he should behave sexually. Although there is an effort by the magazine in delimiting the spaces of the masculine and the feminine through the notion of essence, the senses attributed to what belongs 'essentially’ to the man and what belongs ‘essentially’ to the woman escape, especially when we analyze the women's places in the magazine. On the one hand, women occupy the center of the masculine erotic desires (especially top models, actresses or very young singers); on the other hand, journalists women wrote and guided not only how men should relate with other women, but also how men should behave sexually.

Community-based educational programmes as support structures for adolescents within the context of HIV and AIDS

Louw, William January 2013 (has links)
South Africa is one of the countries with the highest prevalence of HIV infection in the world, particularly among the youth between the ages 15 and 24 years. The number of infections among the youth in South Africa is still increasing and this does not exclude the youth under study in the community of Eersterust. The HIV and AIDS epidemic is affecting large numbers of adolescents, throughout South Africa leading to serious psychological, social, economic and educational problems. Because of the devastating effect and rapid increase of HIV-infections among adolescents, it has become evident that not only government departments (Department of Health and Department of Education), but also community-based educational support structures (organisations) should share the responsibility by playing a pro-active role in awareness and the curbing of the spread of HIV-infection among adolescents. Various researchers have been focusing on the knowledge, attitudes and behaviour of adolescents but limited research has been done on the contribution of community-based educational support programmes with regard to creating awareness and the curbing of the further spread of HIV-infection among adolescents. This study which seeked to address the need for ongoing research in this field, attempted to investigate whether and how communitybased educational programmes address the educational needs of adolescents within a particular community, namely Eersterust. In order to determine these needs, quantitative and qualitative descriptive research approaches were utilized comprising of a questionnaire survey and focus group interviews. The questionnaire survey explored the knowledge, skills, attitudes and sexual behaviour of the 916 participants. The results from the questionnaire were utilized to determine the educational needs of adolescents. Focus group interviews were conducted with 11 adolescents who attended the educational support programmes at the Youth Development Outreach Centre and the Circle of Life Centre. The latter are two community-based organisations in the community under study (Eersterust). The focus group interviews were utilized to determine the views of the adolescents with regard to the mode of delivery and effectiveness of the community-based educational support programmes. From the data in the questionnaire the educational needs of adolescents were identified and compared with the content of the community-based educational support programmes of the two community-based support structures. The findings revealed that the community-based educational support programmes are to a large extent addressing the HIV and AIDS educational needs of the adolescents under study. The focus group interviews revealed that the participants are of the opinion that they find the programmes interesting and enriching. They benefit educationally by attending the educational programmes and they would recommend the programmes to other adolescents. The findings indicate that the educational programmes are appropriate to address the HIV and AIDS educational needs of the adolescents. The educational needs identified in the empirical research are however not fulfilled because many of the adolescents do not attend the educational programmes. There are only a few adolescents who attend these educational programmes. The latter might be a contributing factor to the high HIV-infection among adolescents. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / gm2013 / Early Childhood Education / unrestricted

Knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, behaviours and sources of hiv/aids information among university students at two tertairy institutions in South Africa

Reddy, Preshani January 2009 (has links)
Magister Scientiae (Physiotherapy) - MSc(Physio) / The incidence of HIV/AIDS appears to be stabilizing in South Africa. However, it is stabilizing at an extremely high number. The South African youth are the most vulnerable to the virus with the main route of transmission being heterosexual intercourse. In South Africa KwaZulu-Natal is the epicenter for the virus, while in the Western Cape has the lowest HIV/AIDS prevalence. The aim of the study was to determine the knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, behaviours and sources of HIV/AIDS information among university students at two tertiary institutions in South Africa. Method: The study was a quantitative, cross - sectional, descriptive and comparative survey. Students from the University of the Western Cape and the University of KwaZulu Natal (Westville Campus) participated in the study. The study instrument was a questionnaire which was complied from other questionnaires based on literature. The questionnaire consisted of questions to gather information pertaining to the students’ knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, behaviours and sources of HIV/AIDS information. The questionnaires were then tested for validity and reliability for South African students. The response rate for the questionnaires was 66% (N = 663). The main findings from the study showed that university students had a good general knowledge on HIV/AIDS.However students scored poorly in modes of HIV transmission. UKZN students scored higher than UWC students in the knowledge questionnaire. Males scored lower than females and there was also a significant association noted between age and knowledge.Students from both universities had a positive attitude towards people living with HIV/AIDS. There was a significant association between age and gender in terms of attitudes. Students from UWC deemed themselves as having less of a chance of contracting the disease compared to students from UKZN. UWC on the other hand students participated in more riskier behaviours than UKZN students. The media was the main source of HIV/AIDS information for students (79.9%). In terms of religiosity many students stated that the attend places of worship infrequently (35%).Recommendations: campus health care facilities need to be more proactive in informing the students about HIV/AIDS; alcohol and substance abuse needs to be addressed along with HIV/AIDS; campuses should draw up a full course on HIV/AIDS, courses to empower female students need to be offered and ongoing research needs to be done in this area to evaluate the effectiveness of the programmes being run.

Homosexuellas upplevelser av bemötande från vårdpersonal : En litteraturstudie

Dahlberg, Emma, Åkerman, Marcus January 2017 (has links)
Background: Homosexuality historically had a series of laws that spoke against their human rights. In Sweden, a healthcare law about fair treatment exists, however, not everyone got the same care. A nurse's key area of expertise is the care and understanding of patient treatment.   Aim: The aim of the literature study was to explore homosexual experiences of treatment in the meetings with healthcare professionals and to look at the included articles sample groups.   Method: Literature study with descriptive design based on 12 qualitative scientific articles from the search engine MedLine and manual searches.   Main results: The results showed both negative and positive experiences of meetings with healthcare professionals. The elements that influenced how the meetings were experienced were the professionals' attitudes, knowledge about the subject and usage of heteronormative words. Most of the included articles informed about the participants' ages and inclusion criteria. The largest part of participants were women and nine of twelve articles were made in Europe.   Conclusion: This have shown that the treatments homosexual patients got could have been influenced by the healthcare professionals’ knowledge, attitudes and personal values. The homosexuals described both positive and negative experiences where heterosexual assumption, certain word choices and feelings of doubt have occurred. An increased knowledge and education about questions concerning homosexual’s and their experiences in the meeting with healthcare can help the undergraduate nurses to develop the capability for a more individual and positive encounter for homosexual people.

Disclosure practices of adolescents raised in same-gendered families

Kruger, Liana 14 June 2011 (has links)
The concept of “family” has rapidly changed over the past few years. The prevalence of more and more children raised in same-gendered families has brought to mind the question of disclosure. This qualitative case study explored the disclosure practices of adolescents raised in same-gendered families in an attempt to understand how adolescents negotiate their unique family structure throughout their daily lives. The data in this study was analysed using thematic content analysis. It was found that both positive and negative experiences influence the adolescents raised in samegendered families decision to disclose and that disclosure of family structure usually takes place after careful negotiation based on the grounds of either a close relationship, common ground or a perceived urgency. / Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Educational Psychology / unrestricted

Adolescent Peer Perceptions Reflected in the Yearbooks of Mormon Homosexual and Heterosexual Men

Pruden, David C. 01 May 2003 (has links)
This study explored the peer perceptions of adolescent heterosexual males and their homosexual counterparts who had not disclosed their feelings of erotic same-sex attraction to their classmates. The study focused on members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a conservative Christian denomination with clear doctrinal prohibitions against homosexual behavior. The handwritten messages from peers found in the senior high school yearbooks of 30 heterosexual and 30 same-sex attracted adolescent men were content analyzed to examine similarities and differences in the themes that emerged from the data. The results indicated that there is a difference in the kind of activities that are common in the lives of these heterosexual and same-sex attracted males. The same-sex attracted men received messages predominately from female peers concerning their talent and themes connected with the arts. The heterosexual men received more of their messages from male peers addressing the topics of sports, recreation, and invitations to engage in shared activities. The research raises questions about the well being of young men who may not identify with most of the dominant images of masculinity available to them. The absence of an adequate cultural script for same-sex attracted youth who must reconcile their sexual feelings with the beliefs of their conservative religious traditions is discussed.

To protect and serve… …everyone, including their own or the Norm? : - An exploration of gender normativities in testimonies of sexual harassment inside the Swedish police force.

Pilevång Bergqvist, Emma January 2023 (has links)
This thesis aims to analyze and trace gender normativities and stereotypes in the testimoniesfrom the #metoo call #nödvärn (2017) and #nödvärn 2.0 (n.d) in Sweden within the policedepartment. This thesis includes a qualitative thematic analysis of the material combined witha positioning theory. The analysis is based on testimonies from #nödvärn and #nödvärn 2.0regarding harassments inside the Swedish police force. The theoretical framework in thisthesis are based on queer theory with concepts like gender norm, normativities andstereotyping that are illuminating in the material. The thesis also includes an intersectionalapproach to understand the hierarchical perspective between gender and sexuality that areconsisting through the material. This thesis contributes to research due to the missing LGBTQperspective. The analysis shows clearly stated gender stereotypes in both genders, but alsodifferent stereotypes according to status and sexuality in the testimonies. This with a strongconnection to the macho norm that are consisting throughout the previous research andanalysis, with other normativities illustrated such as gender normative and heteronormativity. Finally, there is a hierarchical level illustrated in the analysis related to inclusion andexclusion by categorization.
