The performance in literacy of learners hailing from poor socio-economic circumstances, the so-called environmentally deprived learners, is often much poorer than those from more advantaged homes. Writing, as a core aspect of literacy skills, can rightly be viewed as one of the most complicated skills. The mastering thereof puts an almost unattainable demand on the environmentally deprived learner. This situation is largely attributed to the learning deficit experienced by such learners. The problem is often exacerbated by a lack in educator proficiency and the general absence of good education where these learners go to school.
Although many intervention measurements and strategies have been initiated by the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) and the Department of Basic Education (DBE) to inhibit the many challenges surrounding especially literacy performance, it would seem that interventions to improve learners’ writing ability is often neglected. This constructivist study was aimed at undertaking an encompassing investigation and to address the challenges that environmentally deprived learners experience in terms of writing skills in a holistic manner within the context of poor rural schools.
This qualitative investigation was executed at nine rural schools in the West Coast district of the Western Cape. Language educators in the Intermediary Phase were involved in the study. The schools are situated in areas where there are visible signs of poor socio-economic circumstances, and chosen for their status as schools in the lower quintiles. The theoretic perspectives of Piaget, Vygotski, Bronfenbrenner and Bandura, with their focus on socio-cultural theories, were studied. Specific strategies and principles from these perspectives were aligned with this study. The promotion of writing skills in the constructivist classroom was studied, with a focus on the influential work of Brian Cambourne (1934-), which focuses on the conditions for learning and also the way in which educators can create a classroom ethos to develop good writing skills. The constructivist view also guided the data collection process and from the data themes and subthemes were identified that were discussed and analysed. Findings of this research has shown that writing is a complicated activity for both educators and learners and that the teaching and promotion thereof are lacking in many aspects. Educators have limited knowledge in respect of the teaching and assessment of writing skills. The findings also show that few measures are in place to address the unique demands made by environmentally deprived learners. The study has also shown that the parents of environmentally deprived learners display an uninterested, apathetic attitude towards their schoolwork.
In a nutshell it can be said that this study has shown that there is indeed much to be done not only to improve the writing ability of environmentally deprived learners in poorer rural schools, but that solutions should also urgently be sought to the countless other challenges experienced by environmentally deprived learners in rural schools. / Curriculum and Instructional Studies / D. Proposed theories of education for effective teaching and learning when using Web2.0 technology in distance educationDimmick-Touw, Michelle 12 1900 (has links)
The research in this dissertation of limited scope aimed to identify theories of education for effective teaching and learning when using Web2.0 technology in distance education. The rationale for such a study is based on the premise that, globally, the dawn of the Fourth Industrial Revolution is bringing about a rapid technological growth and innovative information communication technology (ICT) tools which are utilised in distance education. The increase in connections across the globe has also seen an increase in online learning as the barriers of time and space have been bridged. These advances in technology have a direct impact on the education system which needs to experience a similar exponential development in the guiding theories for universities offering distance learning using Web2.0 technology. Qualitative research methods were used to conduct an integrative literature review of the most utilised pedagogical theories over time. The pedagogical principles were applied to the requirements for effective online teaching and learning to develop a guideline to determine which pedagogical principles and combinations are therefore applicable to 21st century distance education. The finding is that no one pedagogical theory researched in this study can be isolated to be applied to online learning, but rather that a combination – in varying degrees – will support an effective online teaching and learning environment. A document analysis was conducted to understand the current guidelines provided for e-learning in selected South African universities. This analysis indicated that there is much room for development to separate the traditional classroom policies from the online learning policies at higher education institutions. Summaries of applications and tools for effective online learning were presented, along with recommendations for developments within the field and for further research. / Kolu phando lungenamhlaba ubanzi kakhulu kujoliswe ekufumaniseni iingcingane zemfundo zokufundisa nokufunda kwabo bafunda bekude besetyenzisa isixhobo sobuchwepheshe beintanethi esibizwa ngokuba yiWeb2.0. Exploring the classroom practices of natural sciences teachers when teaching matter and material in some of the schools in the Siyabuswa CircuitNtuli, Thuli Gladys 10 1900 (has links)
The study explored the classroom practices of Natural Sciences teachers when
teaching the Matter and Material strand in senior phase schools in the Siyabuswa
circuit. The following research questions were explored: What is the nature of the
teacher’s teacher knowledge when teaching Matter and Material strand in the senior
phase schools? What is the nature of the teacher’s instructional strategies when
teaching the Matter and Material strand in the senior phase schools? How does the
teacher’s teacher knowledge and instructional strategies shape the classroom
interactions and discourse? The qualitative case study approach was employed,
wherein three teachers participated. Interviews and observation were used for data
collection. The findings revealed that Natural Science teachers lack content
knowledge and inadequate Subject Matter Knowledge which influences their
instructional strategies, hence their classroom interactions and discourses.
Recommendations were made to the Department of Education and government to

Developing critical thinking in auditing students through technology-based educational interventions : a conceptual frameworkTerblanche, Ester Aletta Jacomina 04 November 2019 (has links)
Although the development of critical thinking in students is not an easy task, it is becoming
increasingly more vital. Students need to be able to think critically to thrive in the 21st
century workplace. The auditor of the future must adapt to a fast-changing, technologydriven
world where critical thinking capabilities provide the ability to solve unstructured
problems, analyse and interpret information, make informed decisions and interrogate
information.
With claims that the auditing profession is not delivering entry-level chartered accountants
with the necessary skills and competencies to truly add value to auditing clients, the onus
is on educators to develop critical thinking in their students. As critical thinking is a
complex concept with multiple dimensions, imparting this skill to students is an intricate
process. Technology-based educational interventions which include simulations, virtual
reality and games can provide effective platforms for developing critical thinking.
However, educators are often hesitant to use these technologies and uncertain how to
instill critical thinking in students.
It is therefore clear that educators need guidance and require a robust, holistic framework
for critical thinking development through technology-based educational interventions. The
primary objective of this study was to propose such a conceptual framework that would
provide guidance to educators in addressing the growing need for auditors with welldeveloped
critical thinking capabilities. To arrive at this conceptual framework, more
insights into the conceptualisation and development of critical thinking were required.
These insights set the foundation for a preliminary, literature-based, conceptual
framework. To validate the concepts and relationships proposed in this preliminary
framework and to provide insights into additional concepts and relationships, the
perspectives of three groups of participants were obtained using an Interactive Qualitative
Analysis (IQA) design. Concepts in the final conceptual framework included studentrelated
factors, educator-related factors, design and development considerations,
technology-based enabling tools, collaboration among stakeholders and disciplines, the
learning process, ethics, globalisation, auditing content, critical thinking and other learning
outcomes associated with critical thinking, constructivism and characteristics of critical thinking instruction. The end product is a novel, integrated and robust conceptual
framework aimed at the development of critical thinking in auditing students through
technology-based educational interventions. This framework provides a structure to the
complex nature of critical thinking development. The acquisition of critical thinking
capabilities is, however, not a once-off, linear event. The framework and its individual
concepts and relationships should thus be seen as part of a continuous process of critical
thinking growth.

Tegnologiese onderrigintervensies

Benutting van onderrigtegnieke in maatskaplikewerksupervisie aan voorgraadse studenteFell, Granda Desiré Jacqueline 31 March 2006 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / OPSOMMING
`n Gestruktureerde vraelys is as data-insamelingsmetode benut.
SUMMARY
An exploratory and descriptive study was undertaken to provide scientifically based guidelines regarding educational techniques used by practical trainers when providing social work supervision to undergraduate students. To apply supervision effectively, practical trainers must have knowledge of educational techniques and be able to apply these.
The literature study focuses on the educational function of supervision and provides a classification and description of educational techniques that can be applied within the supervision process.
The sample included twenty-two supervisors/practical trainers at family welfare organisations in the Metropolitan and Boland regions, Western Cape. A structured questionnaire was used to gather data. The findings and results show that continuing education through informal training strategies by practical trainers is essential to expand their knowledge of the educational function of supervision and to encourage the use of educational techniques. Further research should focus on educational techniques from the Gestalt approach or other approaches. / Social work / M.Diac.

Lecturers' perceptions on the value of the experience of completing a teaching portfolioGrace, Elaine Lydia 01 1900 (has links)
A teaching portfolio allows lecturers to track their own growth and development in teaching and learning, as it helps to document their career’s journey. This study gained insight into this experience from the lecturers’ perspectives.
The research paradigm was qualitative and the study used a sample of lecturers from an independent tertiary institution in Johannesburg. Personal interviews provided rich data and themes were developed from the data to answer the research questions concerning the value of doing a teaching portfolio.
Lecturers’ perceptions provided clear evidence of the value of doing a teaching portfolio, because it developed their personal competence, knowledge, skills and higher-order thinking. However, the findings showed that the success of a teaching portfolio remained dependent on individual motivation and how the process was implemented. Any challenges experienced tended to negatively affect motivation, thereby decreasing the perceived value of a teaching portfolio. This study recommended that a teaching portfolio might offer a solution to some of the current education issues within the South Africa context, especially with regard to the lack of content knowledge and the disempowerment of teachers.
Photefolio ya go ruta e kgontša bafahloši go latišiša kgolo le tšwetšopele tše e lego tša bona ka go goruta le go ithuta, ka ge e thuša go rekhota leeto la mošomo wa bona.

E-learning technologies for open distance learning knowledge acquisition in managerial accountingKashora, Trust 07 1900 (has links)
This research seeks to establish how e-learning may contribute towards knowledge
construction for Management Accounting students at the University of South Africa.
More specifically, the research is designed to investigate how educational
technologies like e-learning may benefit and improve the teaching and learning of
Management Accounting at Unisa. Educators need to understand how students learn
so that they can establish suitable learning strategies. Studies have shown that
generally, e-learning applications are little used, sometimes because of inappropriate
content and technologies. Other prohibitive factors are costs, poor or inadequate
technology infrastructure and a shortage of human resources. On the strength of a
comprehensive literature survey, a framework to address and manage challenging
aspects of teaching and e-learning were developed. Problem areas and critical
success factors were considered.
The said framework ought to assist with organising complex issues and reveal parts
that need further work. The utility of the framework was evaluated through a staged
process. First, it was tested and evaluated through the model of a lecture. Secondly,
both qualitative and quantitative surveys among university lectures and students were
conducted to further confirm the applicability of the framework. Though the outcome
of the validations were satisfactory, more research needs to be carried out over a
longer period of time in order to determine the scalability of the framework and to
remove any inconsistencies. Aspects of the framework could be used to incorporate ICTs, e.g. the use of spreadsheets and the Learning Village into communities of
practice.

Curriculum and practice to develop critical thinking competencies in first-year students / Kurrikulum en praktyk om kritiese denke in eerstjaarstudente te ontwikkel / Ukusebenzisa ikhayityhulam ngenjongo yokuphuhlisa ukucinga nzulu kubafundi bonyaka wokuqalaGoode, Heather Ann 23 October 2020 (has links)
Abstract in English, Afrikaans and Xhosa / Critical thinking competencies are not only seen as crucial for success in higher
education, but also for future personal and workplace success. These competencies
are commonly cited as a graduate attribute or goal of higher education, and resulting
research has tended to focus on exploring and measuring the development of critical
thinking competencies in students within higher education. However, few researchers
have explored the curriculum and practice of academic staff within higher education
in relation to their influence on developing critical thinking competencies in students,
or how they theorise about the development of these competencies as part of their
professional practice.
Within the South African context, there is a perception of a decline in the development
of critical thinking competencies within the secondary school system. This has
informed policy imperatives to improve access and success in South African higher
education through additional support for students, as well as through research into the
first-year experience.
Within a constructivist paradigm, and adopting a qualitative approach, this study takes
the first year of higher education as its context in order to explore the curriculum,
assessment, pedagogical and andragogical practices of academic staff designed to
develop critical thinking competencies in first-year students. The aim is to explore how
academic staff construct their theory and practice in order to contribute to the
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning in South African Higher Education.
Phenomenological case study research methods, which draw on data collection
through semi-structured interviews and document analysis, enabled a better
understanding of the lived experience of academic staff within private higher education. Academic staff, as research participants, were able to describe deliberate
actions taken in their teaching practices to facilitate the development and assessment
of critical thinking competencies. The findings revealed that academic staff – while
having no coherent, well-articulated construction of critical thinking competencies –
feel that such competencies are essential for academic and future life success. This
not only affirmed previous research reviewed, but aligned to the inclusion of explicit
and implicit references to critical thinking competencies found in the curriculum and
assessment documents. Recommendations for professional development responded
specifically to these findings.
oogmerk in hoër onderwys.
in Suid-Afrika se Hoër Onderwys. Fenomenologiese gevallestudienavorsingsmetodes
Akademiese personeel, as
assesseringsdokumente. Aanbevelings vir professionele ontwikkeling het spesifiek op

The use of questioning as a teaching strategy : a case study of Social Studies in grade seven / Gebruik van vraagstelling as 'n onderrigstrategie : 'n gevallestudie van Sosiale Wetenskappe in graad 7 / Kusetjentiswa kwekubuta njengelisu lekufundzisa : sifundvo sekuhlola se-Social Studies kulibanga 7Vilakati, Phumzile Patience 01 1900 (has links)
Abstracts in English, Afrikaans and Zulu / This study explored teachers’ effective use of questioning as a teaching strategy in Social Studies in grade seven within a primary school in the Kingdom of Eswatini (formerly known as Swaziland). The advent of free primary education has brought about large class sizes, but the desire to produce quality education persists. The literature distilled in the study showed that, although a considerable body of studies has established that questioning in the classroom helps direct learning, many teachers fail to utilise it as such. Those who endeavour to use it succeed in engaging their learners, and this results in teaching effectiveness and good outcomes for their learners. The study employed the interpretive paradigm because of the in-depth nature of the investigation. It therefore was a qualitative study that used observation and in-depth semi-structured interviews to gather data and attain the objectives of the study. It was a case study in which four Social Studies teachers took part. Observations were made for at least for 60 minutes in each classroom. Field notes were taken and later analysed. Individual interviews were conducted with the teachers. The results of the study showed that teachers did not use questions to direct teaching and learning, and had no knowledge of the concept of wait time. They also said that they had not been taught questioning strategies in their pre- service teacher training. This was consistent with the literature. Though research shows that questioning promotes effective teaching, the studies reviewed indicated that few teachers use it as an instructional tool. The implications derived from the present study are therefore that pre-service teacher training has to be improved to cater for such important topics as classroom questioning. Also to be improved is further professional development. There is a significant need for action at the macro- and micro-levels of the educational system towards improvement. The actions at the micro-level will be determined by diligent policies designed and executed at that level, that is, the level of the school. / Lesifundvo sihlose kusebentisa ngemphumelelo inchubo yekubuta njengelisu lekufundzisa ku-Social Studies kuLibanga 7 ngekhatsi kwesikolwa semabanga laphasi Eswatini (lebeyatiwa ngeSwaziland ngaphambilini).
