January 2008 (has links)
Abstract: This research was carried out to analyze the six novels of the series El capitán Alatriste (1996- 2006), by the Spanish writer Arturo Pérez-Reverte, to prove the thesis that the rewriting of the Spanish 19th century organized by the series claims at spreading an "objective and true" knowledge of history, by means of a monological vision of historical facts turned into fiction, thus reaffirming the presuppositions of classical historical narrative. Therefore, our analysis is based on the investigation of the formal hybridism which is formed by means of the simultaneous exploitation of genres, such as the historical narrative, memoirs, the didactic novel, the picaresque novel and the serial novel whose paradigm is provided by Alexandre Dumas' works. In the analysis of serial rewriting, we made use of Umberto Eco's theorizations (1964 and 1978) about mass literature, trying to prove that narratives takes on recurrent forms, in which one may find out homologies between the narrative structures, the plot and the author's ideological propositions. In the examination of the narrative procedures, among other features we analyzed the characteristics of the character-narrator, who acts as an authorized interpreter of the historical events turned into fiction, to the extent that he also takes the shape of a spokesman of value system confirmed in the novels. In that case, we proved that the revisiting of the Spanish history proposed in novels tends to exalt the heroic dimensions of the Spanish imperial history. / Doutor

López Sanhueza, Javier Ignacio January 2015 (has links)

Re-appropriating the Catholic imaginary: discourse strategies and the struggle for modernization in late nineteenth-century religious fiction

Powers, Jennifer Marie 04 February 2010 (has links)
This project explores how literary authors used religious discourses in the sociointellectual climates of late nineteenth-century Catholic cultures. It takes its premise from a tacit paradox of Western European modernization: unlike other Western European nations, nations such as France and Spain modernized without adopting Protestantism or doctrines of anti-Catholicism or anticlericalism--and, thus, without a strict break into national secular discourses. Addressing how various religious discourses were used in modernizing France and Spain (respectively, from 1848 and from 1868 to the early twentieth century), I take a cultural-historical approach to representative religiously themed novels and short fiction of the periods. I contend that non-institutionalized traditional Catholic culture (a culture's “religious imaginary” or “Catholic imaginary”) offered authors a plural and, thus, strategic source for making cultural critiques. These critiques would have resonated widely with contemporaneous readerships, and often without overt confrontations (as anticlericalism has historically done). I point to the presence of such critiques specifically in canonical authors’ religious works--works often considered to be aberrational or “too Catholic” to be valued as modern vis-à-vis the landmarks of Western literature. Taking as my key example a novel by the “father of the modern Spanish novel,” Benito Pérez Galdós’s Misericordia or Compassion (1897), I unfold progressive readings of this text based on discourses borrowing historical, thematic, and stylistic elements from the archives of a Catholic imaginary. Thereafter, I broaden my argument by considering how comparable, but distinct, discourses inform social-critical readings of Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables or The Underclass (1862), Gustave Flaubert’s “Un Coeur simple” or “A Simple Heart” (1877), and Emilia Pardo Bazán’s “Un destripador de antaño” or “The Heart Lover” (1900). Overall, the project challenges a critical status quo that has chosen to identify canonical literature in reference to a secular aesthetic program, without allowing for the possibility that cultural-religious discourses might also carry weight for cultures that were modernizing. Additionally, it re-characterizes the modernizing intellectual, seen typically as spiritually cynical or atheist, as one acknowledging the populist force of the religious imaginary freed from church limits. / text

Modern femininity, shattered masculinity : the scandal of the female nude during political crisis in Colombia, 1930-1948

Suescun Pozas, María del Carmen January 2005 (has links)
This dissertation examines two controversies involving paintings of the female nude by artists Debora Arango and Carlos Correa during a period of political crisis in Bogota (Colombia) in order to open the political to cultural analysis and thus shed light on scenarios of change in the 1930s and 1940s. Unpacking the controversies lends insight into the unique ways in which modernity, the body, its representations, sexuality, gender and politics came together in Colombia during this period. Such an approach also shows that modernity in Colombia involved shifts in religious and secular frames of sense-making and morality. This dissertation argues that the controversies and the female nudes provide a window into the Liberal regime's creation of culture as an autonomous sphere as part of its cultural program, which bridged high and popular culture, as well as on aspects of private life concerned with sexuality and gender. It shows how such changes registered in the lives of the artists and how the artists translated the changes they experienced into modes of pictorial expression. This dissertation argues that the demands of the aesthetic and the demands of politics during this period pressed on each other, resulting in the wide-spread perception of moral breach that came to a head in the "scandals of the female nudes." This dissertation thus sheds light on dimensions of both the political and the private during this period. / Because art and politics were thus entangled, this dissertation shows that, in this particular Colombian modernity, society was not polarized, that the private and the private overlapped, that issues of intimacy surfaced in the public realm, and that Catholicism was the idiom shared by men and women who were grappling with change. It shows that the cultural program of the Liberal regime was the immediate referent for criticism in these events and, through it, of the Liberal regime's reforms of education of 1934 and 1936. Finally, it shows that this modernity and its attendant anxieties were played out through the body in the public and the private realms, within, not against, the Catholic tradition, in unprecedented ways. This thesis demonstrates that politics and issues of sexuality and gender were entangled in the public sphere and converged in the female nudes, turning them into a major threat to morality within both religious and secular frameworks. By unpacking the controversies, this dissertation marks a seminal break with historical accounts that describe Colombia's as a failed modernity, its society as polarized, and debates over sexuality and gender as the product of politics. This dissertation also contradicts art historical writings that account for the production of images and the reception of art in this period solely in political terms.

Ferreira, Letícia Schneider January 2012 (has links)
This study aims at analyzing representations related to the feminine in the mediaeval period, searching for the existence or not of some association between characteristics given to women and the sin of luxury. With this aim, the research uses different resources in order to contextualize the conception of the feminine and it also takes advantage, mainly, of “Livro das Confições” (Book of Confessions) of Martin Perez, organized by monks of the Alcobaça Monastery in 1399. Worries concerning sin passed through the mediaeval imaginary and were made up of a range of discourses which intended to guide social relationships and apply the reality. Thought and practices identified along the mediaeval context suffered a number of transformations as time passed by. An example of this is the institution of the auricular confession and also modifications observed in the presentation of capital sins. Thus, for an adequate understanding of the feminine and the masculine in that historic moment, it is fundamental to make a reflection about sin, its possibilities of manifestation and ways of avoiding it, in that the reflection about it allows the suggestion of certain models of thinking and acting. The feminine reality, with its diversified range of action, especially marriage and motherhood, and its connection with sin, under gender analysis, allows a deeper understanding of social behaviors as well as well as political, economical and cultural aspects to which were submitted the subjects who lived in that period.
