Enquanto que o jornal paulista demonstrava apreço pela posição israelense, uma vez que havia sido decidido de maneira democrática pela ONU a criação do novo Estado, o jornal carioca mostrava-se solidário, mas de maneira tímida, aos palestinos. Com relação às ações da diplomacia brasileira na ONU, o jornal O Estado de São Paulo expressou sua crítica em relação ao desempenho da delegação brasileira. Afirmava que os diplomatas responsáveis por traduzir os anseios e opiniões dos brasileiros na organização internacional estavam mais preocupados com êxitos particulares. This observation was made through O Estado de São Paulo and Correio da Manhã newspapers´ overview based on sources of Itamaraty Historical Files and the CPDOC (Contemporary Brazilian History Research and Documentation Centre) from 1945 to 1951. Brazilian international policy was trying to raise its proportional representation in the new geopolitics established after the Second World War. For this reason, Brazil was supporting US proposals in the UN. Brazilian vote in favor of Palestine partition in UNO was understood as a result of the alignment to the USA O Estado de São Paulo and Correio da Manhã newspapers focused upon the Palestine question. While O Estado de São Paulo made a favor statement about Israel’s position, understanding that a democratic decision was taken by UNO about the creation of a new state; Correio da Manhã showed to be solidarity for the Palestinians. Sem intenção de homogeinizar o que é ser palestino, analisamos o corpus por meio de uma abordagem narratológica sobre como as narrativas de uma nação (BHABHA, 1990), seus elementos culturais, as experiências de vida dos palestinos e percepções do próprio narrador-personagem sobre elas são representadas e significam. Para tanto, foram elaboradas dominantes temáticas sobre identidade palestina verificadas nas produções, a saber: alteridade; trauma e ressentimento; família; resistência; costumes; fronteiras; e gênero. Tendo como base metodológica a Análise Crítica da Narrativa (MOTTA, 2013) e o Sistema dos Quadrinhos (GROENSTEEN, 2015), trabalhamos tais temas conjuntamente a categorias gerais de análise da narrativa – conflito, narrador e personagem – acerca das questões de palestinidade. E, por meio de concepções teóricas dos estudos culturais, adentramos na questão de representações, identidade e diferença. Todos estes elementos, portanto, foram estudados à luz de dados históricos do conflito israelo-palestino e do desenvolvimento dos quadrinhos para o melhor entendimento contextual e estético na materialização dos testemunhos trazidos pelo jornalismo em quadrinhos de Sacco. Dessa forma, ao compartilharmos das aproximações entre quadrinhos, jornalismo e documentário, questões da dor e trauma, apresentamos a discussão de uma política de representação de alteridade. / This research aims to discuss what are the representations of Palestinian Identity/Palestinianess at Joe Sacco’s comics journalism, Palestine (2010) and Footnotes in Gaza (2010). With no intention to homogenize what is to be Palestinian, we analyze the corpus through a narratological approach about how the narratives of a nation (BHABHA, 1990), its cultural elements, the Palestinians’ life experiences as well as those views from the narrator about them are presented and signify. Thus, we elaborated thematic issues about Palestinian Identity verified at these productions, as follows: otherness; trauma and resentment; family, resistance; habits; borders; and gender. As methodological basis, we used the Critical Analysis of Narrative (MOTTA, 2013) and System of Comics (GROENSTEEN, 2015) together with these thematics and general narrative categories of analysis – conflict, narrator and character – about Palestinianess. In addition, through theoretical framework from cultural studies, we argue about representations, identity and difference. All these elements, therefore, work alongside historical information about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and comics’ development for the better contextual understanding and aesthetics for the materialization of witnessing brought by Joe Sacco’s comics journalism. In this sense, while we share approximations between comics, journalism and documentary, questions of trauma and pain, we present a discussion about a politics of representation of the otherness.

Den 14 maj firar Israel 60 år som självständig stat. Men konflikten med Palestina är ständigt närvarande. Folket från båda sidor lider av att aldrig känna trygghet, att förlora nära och kära, och att inte kunna nyttja sina mänskliga rättigheter. I denna artikelserie berättar invånarna om hur det är att leva med konflikten som vardag.

A trajetória dos imigrantes palestinos em Santa Catarina esteve marcada por redes sociais de solidariedade étnica e familiar. Dessa forma, em todo seu percurso, as questões identitárias estiveram fortemente presentes nessa imigração caracteristicamente autônoma, sem qualquer auxílio estatal, e urbana. Os vínculos familiares, étnicos e religiosos, forneceram os alicerces para inserção econômica e social, assim como para comunidades locais e associações entre imigrantes. Intimamente associada a este processo, a Questão Palestina se fez presente durante toda trajetória desses palestinos tanto como indivíduos, como parte de uma coletividade ligada a essa questão. Fortemente marcada na memória individual e coletiva, está a expropriação e/ou a ocupação da terra habitada por eles e/ou por seus familiares mais próximos, que os afeta de diversas maneiras (social, cultural, politica e economicamente), particularmente no que se refere às causas da emigração. Associável sempre a todos, entretanto, está o pertencimento a uma coletividade cuja identidade está em questão em muitos lugares do mundo. A busca pela emancipação de seu torrão natal torna-se assim um dos elementos fundamentais de sua identidade, que por sua vez se torna uma ferramenta indispensável para manutenção do direito de retorno daqueles que foram expulsos e de seus descendentes, como também contra a expulsão daqueles que lá permanecem. A inserção numa cultura diferente, bem como em outra realidade socio-política, trouxe mudanças e dilemas em relação aos hábitos e a própria autodefinição. Diante dessa realidade, a etnicidade foi mantida através do vínculo com a causa palestina, a família, a religião e a comunidade de imigrantes. Entretanto, o apego aos costumes e as tradições entre os palestinos em Santa Catarina não os fez menos brasileiros em sua visão, pois ao mesmo tempo incorporaram a nacionalidade brasileira a sua própria maneira. / The trajectory of Palestinian immigrants in Santa Catarina was marked by social networks of family and ethnic solidarity. Thus, throughout its path, the identity issues were strongly present in this characteristically autonomous, without any state aid, and urban immigration. Family ties, ethnic and religious, have provided the foundation for economic and social inclusion, as well as local communities and associations among immigrants. Closely associated with this process, the Palestine Question was present during the entire trajectory of these Palestinians as individuals, as part of a community linked to this issue. Strongly marked in individual and collective memory, is the expropriation and / or occupation of land where they and / or their close family members inhabit, which affects them in a variety of ways (socially, culturally, politically and economically), particularly in respect of the causes of emigration. Associable always to everyone, however, is belonging to a community whose identity is in question in many places around the world. The search for the emancipation of their homeland have thus becomes a fundamental element of their identity, which in turn becomes an indispensable tool for maintaining the right of return of those who were expelled and their descendants, as well as those who remain there resisting their expulsion. The setting in a different culture, as well as other socio-political reality, brought changes and dilemmas in relation to habits and their own self-definition. Having this reality in mind, ethnicity was maintained through ties with the Palestinian cause, family, religion and immigrant community. However, attachment to the customs and traditions among Palestinians in Santa Catarina did not make them less Brazilians in their view, because at the same time they incorporated Brazilian nationality in their own way.

Based on the Identity approach, considering how the journalist and cartoonist Joe Sacco, Maltese by birth, cosmopolitan by vocation, constructs a narrative that highlights the otherness, establishing a productive counterpoint to understand this conflict in the Middle East: from the perspective of those that, by Western corporations that emerged, were thrown to the mists of oblivion. From the new perspectives provided by various historiography strands, as the Intellectual History and Cultural Studies, aggregate to a rich conceptual framework for research on manned imagery issue, it is possible to envision new paradigms that can be incorporated into the research on the topic in order to enter the HQ universe into contemporary historiography discussions. Theme whose interest is piqued by naturally transcends the clichés for this conferred a priori. It is understood by commonplace in this case the sphere of entertainment, which includes mostly symbolic products disseminated on a large scale marketing purposes and for leisure. / Através de um estudo sobre a série Palestina e as obras Derrotista e Notas sobre Gaza, de Joe Sacco, esta pesquisa busca evidenciar como a arte do quadrinho surge como uma linguagem apropriada para abordar um tema complexo como o conflito entre árabes e judeus na disputa pelo território da Palestina. Partindo da abordagem sobre Identidade, analisaremos como o jornalista e quadrinista Joe Sacco, maltês de nascimento, cosmopolita por vocação, constrói uma narrativa que evidencia a alteridade, estabelecendo um profícuo contraponto para se compreender este conflito que assola o Oriente Médio: através da perspectiva daqueles que, relevados pelas corporações ocidentais, foram lançados às brumas do esquecimento. O trabalho aqui apresentado busca analisar a centralidade dos recursos hídricos no conflito israelo-palestino e em suas negociações de paz, no que diz respeito à configuração territorial tanto do Estado de Israel quanto de um possível Estado Palestino, a partir da perspectiva da Geografia Política. Partindo desse pressuposto busca discutir questões relacionadas à segurança internacional, à soberania dos Estados, e uma suposta mudança de paradigmas em relação a esses temas a partir da emergência das questões ambientais nas últimas décadas. A discussão acerca das possibilidades de conflitos envolvendo recursos hídricos é de grande relevância. Assim, analisar esse assunto tendo como área de estudo o Estado de Israel e os Territórios Ocupados da Palestina, acrescenta ao tema elementos de maior dramaticidade, devido a diversos fatores tais como a pouca oferta hídrica e a importância estratégica da região, o que decorre de fatores de ordem econômica, política e cultural. A partir de tal recorte regional, foi feita uma análise do conflito num constante variar de escalas, possibilitando assim, compreender os eventos locais desde uma perspectiva da totalidade, de forma que essa compreensão possa servir também como base para estudos de ordem global. Foi possível perceber as dificuldades encontradas pelo povo palestino, bem como as preocupações do Estado de Israel em relação à sua segurança hídrica. A água se torna então um elemento político na disputa por territórios e também nas mesas de negociações do conflito. / This paper aims at analyzing the centrality of water resources in the Israeli- Palestinian conflict, as well as in their peace attempts, regarding the territorial configuration of both State of Israel and a possible Palestinian State, from a Political Geography perspective. Assuming that the water is a central element in the conflict the present paper discusses some issues related to international security, states sovereignty, and a supposed change of paradigm regarding these issues from the emerging environmental discussions in the last decades. The discussion around the possibilities of existing water-related conflicts is surely relevant. Thus, analyzing this subject, having as a case study the State of Israel and the Occupied Territories of Palestine adds some elements that bring more dramaticity to the matter, due to several factors such as water insufficient offer and the region strategic importance, as a result of factors of economical, political and cultural order. From such regional framework, the conflict has been analyzed with a constant shifting of scales, which allows us to understand local events from a global perspective in a way that this comprehension in a regional scale may serve as a background for studies in a global scale. It was possible to notice the difficulties faced by Palestinians, as well as worries of the State of Israel regarding water security. Water then becomes a political element in the struggle for territories and also, in the peace negotiation talks.

A presente tese tem por objeto o conflito na Palestina/Israel, mais especificamente as políticas da ocupação israelense na Faixa de Gaza e Cisjordânia e a vulnerabilidade palestina, desde 1967 até os dias de hoje. A situação é analisada a partir da contextualização do conflito no mundo contemporâneo e na região e da contraposição entre bibliografia específica e geral com relatórios de direitos humanos e humanitários. Averígua-se em que medida essa documentação referenda ou fragiliza diferentes interpretações do conflito e da ocupação, bem como quais outras leituras são sugeridas por sua análise. É a permanência do impasse que mantém o tema sempre atual, justificando seu estudo. Constata-se a manutenção de um padrão peculiar de violações sistemáticas dos direitos humanos e humanitários dos palestinos pelo Estado e parte da população israelense, que os mantêm expostos à violência soberana, sendo adequados também para a compreensão dessa situação o conceito de terrorismo estatal e as categorias agambeanas de homo sacer e campo. / This thesis deals with the conflict in Palestine/Israel, more specifically the policies of the Israeli occupation in the Gaza Strip and West Bank and the Palestinian vulnerability, from 1967 to the present day. To analyze the conflict and the occupation they are contextualized in the contemporary world and in the region and the specific and general bibliography are compared to human and humanitarian rights reports. One checks to what extent this documentation endorses or undermines different interpretations of the conflict and Israeli occupation, as well as what other readings are suggested by their analysis. It is the permanence of the impasse that keeps the theme always current, justifying its study. Is verified the maintenance of a peculiar pattern of systematic violations of the human and humanitarian rights of the Palestinians by the State and part of the Israeli population, which keeps them exposed to sovereign violence, and the pertinence of the concept of state terrorism and of the agambean categories of homo sacer and camp to understand this situation.

Por meio da análise de cinco periódicos de amplitude nacional, buscou-se apreender os elementos culturais presentes em avaliações sobre a Questão da Palestina e em discursos pró-sionistas no período de 1936 e 1948. O objetivo do estudo foi analisar como essas avaliações e esses discursos mobilizaram representações, valores, percepções, crenças e imagens na análise do conflito entre árabes e sionistas, bem como na defesa da criação de um Estado judeu na Palestina. Esta pesquisa propôs uma articulação entre política e cultura. Dessa forma, buscou-se avaliar, ao fim do estudo, como fundamentos culturais influenciaram a postura política de uma parcela significativa da sociedade norte-americana, que pressionava o governo dos Estados Unidos a apoiar a criação de um Estado judeu na Palestina. / The goal of this research is to analyze the cultural grounds of the support to Zionism in the United States. Through an analysis of five periodicals of national amplitude, this study seeks to apprehend the cultural elements present in evaluations of the Palestine Question and in pro-Zionist discourses in the period between 1936 and 1948. The objective of this study was analyze how these evaluations and discourses mobilized representations, values, perceptions beliefs and images in the views of the conflict between Arabs and Zionists, as well as in the defense of the creation of a Jewish State in Palestine. This research propounded an articulation between politics and culture. Therefore, it sought to evaluate, at the end of the study, how cultural grounds affected the political behavior of an important segment of the American society, which pressed the United States government to support the creation of a Jewish state in Palestine.
