Pentecostals tend to have a negative view of the Old Testament. Although no official distinction between the Old - and New Testament exists, in practice the Old Testament is regarded as less authoritative than the New Testament. This influences the way worship in the Old Testament is regarded. Pentecostals generally view the New Testament as prescriptive for the worship experience of the Church. This study wants to show that the Old - and New Testament are on equal footing regarding it's authority as the inspired Word of God, also concerning it's teaching on worship. A second problem addressed, is the place of the lament in worship. Pentecostals tend to think that Christians should always be positive and that God should be praised, regardless of the situation. This leads to a denial of the fact that Pentecostals experience pain and negativity and feelings of rage and anger in their lives. They try to hide those feelings from God, which leads to dishonesty in their relationship with Him. Lamenting is regarded as an act of un-faith. On the contrary, this study wants to show that lamenting is an act of bold faith. The psalms teach that we should be completely honest in our relationship with God. We may express all our feelings of negativity and pain and anger and fear and vengeance to God. By doing this, we place it in the hand of a God who cares and understands, a God who transforms us and our situations by the power of his love and grace. Different situations in life call for different types of psalms to be used in worship. Depending on our experience, we can praise or lament or use any of the other types of psalms we find in the book of Psalms. This study focuses on a selection of different types of psalms to ascertain how they can be used in the Pentecostal tradition. The following Gattungen are • discussed: Wisdom psalms, royal psalms, liturgical psalms, psalms of trust, psalms of lament and psalms of praise. The results of the study have shown that the use of the psalms in Pentecostal worship falls within the parameters of the characteristics of Pentecostal hermeneutics. The fact that they are not being used, is contrary to Pentecostal hermeneutics. They can be used in different ways, e.g: in the liturgy of the Church, in the prayer-life of the believer, during pastoral counselling, prophetically and homiletically.

Previous issue date: 2008-10-06 / This dissertation attempts to investigate the discontinuities and continuities in the theology, mentality and world-vision of Brazilian pentecostals. To that end it has as its special object of study the musical repertoire of the pentecostal communities, evaluating the internal evolution of that which is sung in the worship services and other meetings. Music is the principal means by which the behavior of the faithful is moulded. Since it is a product derived from the surrounding culture, and so not completely controlled by the composer, pentecostal hymnology both reflects and inculcates symbols which direct the universe which its followers inhabit. Gilbert Durand's book, The Theory of the Imaginary, provides the hermeneutical basis for our interpretation of the symbolic as present in the hymn-books both of classic pentecostalism and of post-pentecostalism, and we apply Durand's methodology to the images present in the pentecostal hymns. As to its epistemology, this study is both transdisciplinary and comprehensive, as well as taking into account current sociological trends present in what is known as post-modernity / O presente trabalho procura investigar as rupturas e continuidades na teologia, mentalidade e visão de mundo dos pentecostais brasileiros.

Previous issue date: 2012-03-30 / The aim of this paper is analyze the accession of Catholic evangelism for prosperity through the growth of Neopentecostalism in contemporary times, with reference to
the city of St. Joseph Crown Grande, located in Pernambuco. Considering the increase in number of worshipers leaving the Catholic Church for the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, it was the one that stood out, considering that this
increase is related to their representation in the locality due to its role in the induction of persons, managing to attract new supporters and while keeping the faithful older.
Data collection was done by means of participant observation in the locality during the 'meeting' local, semi-structured interviews and an extensive bibliography. We will try to focus on the reasons and processes relevant conversions and so accepted by the faithful who make the Church Universal, which managed to stand out in such a short time among Pentecostals / O objetivo de estudo deste trabalho concentra-se em analisar a adesão de católicos ao evangelismo de prosperidade, mediante o crescimento do Neopentecostalismo na contemporaneidade, tomando como referência o município de São José da Coroa Grande, situado em Pernambuco.

Pentecostalismo e lulismo na periferia de São Paulo: estudo de caso sobre uma Assembleia de Deus na eleição municipal de 2012 / Pentecostalism and Lulism in the outskirts of São Paulo: case study of an Assembly of God in the municipal election of 2012Vinicius Saragiotto Magalhães do Valle 09 December 2013 (has links)
This research analyses the electoral dynamic within a pentecostal church of the denomination Assembly of God, in one of its main ministries, the ministry of Belém. The investigation approached both institutional and membership levels. In the institutional dimension, I analyzed the speeches, strategies and practices of the church in the electoral period. In memberships dimension, I analyzed the shaping of the points of views and them effects in the electoral level, considering the influence of the church and also socioeconomics issues. The observation conducted covered both proportional and majoritarian levels, aiming the broad investigation of the electoral dynamic in this specific place and electoral process. This investigation founds different kinds and intensities of the institution in the proportional and majoritarian levels. In membership dimension, I found a strong support to the candidate promoted by the church in the proportional level, deriving of the communitarians ties of the religious sociability. In the majoritarian level, the discussion of the socioeconomic issues was more present, and a part of the members disagreed with the indication of the church.

Becoming "children of God": the child in holiness and pentecostal mission discourse and the making of global evangelical movements, 1897–1929Chevalier, Laura A. 18 July 2020 (has links)
This dissertation is a historical and missiological study of the concept of the child in North American holiness and pentecostal mission discourse between 1897 and 1929. Despite official prioritization of evangelistic preaching, new holiness and pentecostal mission movements devoted much of their energies to starting schools and opening homes for children in need. Growing widespread interest in studying and protecting children encouraged child-focused activity. At the same time, an evangelical spirituality that emphasized childlike trust in God helped to sustain mission work with children.
The study analyzes narratives found in denominational and mission periodicals as well as other missionary writings to uncover the voices and actions of mission practitioners. In early holiness and pentecostal mission movements, publications enabled the exchange of stories, ideas, and funds. This exchange spread the idea of living by childlike faith, provided resources for raising children in Christian faith, and supported and built children’s homes. Child-centered discourse thus propelled the spread of holiness and pentecostal meta-cultures that formed the next generation of the movements.
Chapters 1 and 2 show the links between holiness and pentecostal mission and earlier evangelical movements. Chapter 1 argues that the child has been central to historical evangelical identity, spirituality, and mission. Chapter 2 identifies changing understandings of the child and approaches to mission that accompanied changes in evangelical identity. These developments contributed to the proliferation of mission discourse on the child during the period of this study. Chapter 3 shows how holiness and pentecostal missionaries, such as Albert Norton, looked to God as a good father who met their needs. Missionaries’ response to a benevolent father was called “living by faith,” and it shaped their approach to mission with children. Chapter 4 examines how members of North American Wesleyan holiness groups, the Free Methodists, Wesleyan Methodists, and Nazarenes, pursued a mission of rescuing and raising children in Christian faith around the world. Chapter 5 explores how pentecostals, such as Leslie and Ava Anglin and Lillian Trasher, set up homes for needy children in various global locations and contributed to the formation of pentecostal childhoods.
This dissertation argues that holiness and pentecostal efforts to care for and train children helped to form global evangelical movements. It contributes to the history of mission, sheds light on how and why these movements spread, and provides a historical link to popular practices of twentieth-century child sponsorship. The study concludes by highlighting the role that narratives and the concept of the child played in shaping evangelicalism.

[pt] IDENTIDADES EM (TRANS)FORMAÇÃO: ANÁLISE DE NARRATIVAS TESTEMUNHAIS DO PROGRAMA VÍCIO TEM CURA / [en] IDENTITIES IN (TRANS)FORMATION: ANALYSIS OF TESTIMONIAL NARRATIVES FROM THE PROGRAM VÍCIO TEM CURADOUGLAS FIRMINO DOS SANTOS 06 June 2022 (has links)
[en] This dissertation pursues the understanding of how self-appointed former addicts create intelligibility about themselves and the world by telling their life stories (re)signifying past experiences, (re)designing present and future and abandoning, manufacturing and claiming identities and belonging to social groups. Seeking to reach these objectives, the chosen theoretical-methodological tool is Narrative Analysis, since this research s interest is focused on the comprehension of what we do as we narrate, that is, the performative character of language. The selected data to be analyzed are testimonial narratives articulated to a television program from Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus (Universal Church of the Kingdom of God), called Vício Tem Cura (There s a cure for addiction, in a free translation). This program portrays people who have reached a recovery from addiction through faith, by the mediation of UCKG churches. Based in this sample, I observe the discursive alignments that come into play throughout the interactions, underscoring the consensus linked to substances and their consumption, that disseminates their norms and deviations while promoting split identities in and among subjects and social groups. Furthermore, this investigation aims to verify whether there are any structural patterns in the analyzed narratives, since they are not prototypical. Finally, I conclude that the discourse which permeates UCKG churches promotes narratives of overcoming substances use that limits the understanding of substances consumption to the same story, which creates a homogeneous and marginalized identity — as if it were possible, in current times, for us all to perform the same self — ratifying and propagating prejudices and stereotypes.

Enemy Love and Apocalyptic Genocide : Views on Military Violence and Pacifism Among Swedish Pentecostals 1967-1971Grenholm, Micael January 2021 (has links)
Pentecostals were the largest religious group among conscientious objectors in Sweden between 1967 and 1971, a time characterized by passionate debates on the ethics of war in the shadows of Vietnam and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This thesis aims to review and analyze how the Pentecostal periodicals Evangelii Härold and Dagen described and ethically motivated military violence and pacifism in different contexts during this period. The purpose is to identify potential motivations for pacifism and/or military support during a time when a large number of Pentecostals refused to bear arms, with particular interest in how these motivations related to ethical evaluation on contemporary wars. Pacifism and conscientious objection were regularly promoted and seldom criticized, while most contemporary military violence was condemned with one glaring exception: Israeli warfare. Unlike the American war effort in Vietnam, Israel’s wars were commonly viewed as eschatologically significant and biblically predicted holy wars, with several writers suggesting that God himself has waged and will wage war on Israel’s behalf. Pacifism was primarily motivated by obedience to the Bible rather than empathy, fitting with Lisa Cahill’s theory of obediential pacifism being distinct from empathic pacifism in the Christian tradition. Support for Israeli warfare was also derived from biblical interpretation, primarily based on Old Testament texts. It was further motivated by ideas of Jewish suffering and death being part of God’s plan, with several Pentecostal writers speculating that an apocalyptic genocide greater than the Holocaust would precede the second coming of Christ. Many Pentecostals did not see this as standing in conflict with personal pacifism and conscientious objection, as both views were perceived as biblical. Future research could further explore the relationship between Pentecostal eschatology and empathy, along with how mid-century Pentecostal Zionism might have been influenced by antisemitic ideas from the 1930’s.

[pt] AS NOVAS FORMAS DE EXPERIÊNCIA CRISTÃ: A DIVERSIDADE RELIGIOSA DENTRO DO CRISTIANISMO / [en] NEW FORMS OF CHRISTIAN EXPERIENCE: RELIGIOUS DIVERSITY WITHIN CHRISTIANITYRONI VALERIO DA SILVA PACHECO 23 September 2021 (has links)
[en] The religious diversity existing in Brazilian Christianity presents new forms of Christian experience and this is the theme presented in this dissertation. It seeks to identify the new directions Christianity has been moving towards. To succeed at the search, bibliographical researches were done, in addition to an interview with the leader of one of the Christians institutions which were analyzed. Our research intends, therefore, to make the connection between spirituality and Christian diversity which exists inside Brazilian Christianity, starting from some churches. We deem this research to be relevant because it addresses an existing gap about the approached theme, as there is no literature indicating a systematic research about spirituality in new Christianity that is presented inside Christianity in Brazil. There is some restlessness that takes us to question the extent of spirituality being a cause for concern to the churches from the new Brazilian Christian religious movements, especially Neo Pentecostalism. It is observed, then, that in these modern Christian institutions, the first interest is not always about spirituality, especially in those which seem to have lost focus as churches, seeking to promote the brand of the institution more than Christ. At last, we are able to comprehend that by not giving due attention to spirituality, churches from the new Brazilian Christian movements take the risk of leaving the idealized path for a Christian church, becoming corporation churches, having only finances and media as goals.
