Risk-averse periodic preventive maintenance optimization

We consider a class of periodic preventive maintenance (PM) optimization problems, for a single piece of equipment that deteriorates with time or use, and can be repaired upon failure, through corrective maintenance (CM). We develop analytical and simulation-based optimization models that seek an optimal periodic PM policy, which minimizes the sum of the expected total cost of PMs and the risk-averse cost of CMs, over a finite planning horizon. In the simulation-based models, we assume that both types of maintenance actions are imperfect, whereas our analytical models consider imperfect PMs with minimal CMs. The effectiveness of maintenance actions is modeled using age reduction factors. For a repairable unit of equipment, its virtual age, and not its calendar age, determines the associated failure rate. Therefore, two sets of parameters, one describing the effectiveness of maintenance actions, and the other that defines the underlying failure rate of a piece of equipment, are critical to our models. Under a given maintenance policy, the two sets of parameters and a virtual-age-based age-reduction model, completely define the failure process of a piece of equipment. In practice, the true failure rate, and exact quality of the maintenance actions, cannot be determined, and are often estimated from the equipment failure history. We use a Bayesian approach to parameter estimation, under which a random-walk-based Gibbs sampler provides posterior estimates for the parameters of interest. Our posterior estimates for a few datasets from the literature, are consistent with published results. Furthermore, our computational results successfully demonstrate that our Gibbs sampler is arguably the obvious choice over a general rejection sampling-based parameter estimation method, for this class of problems. We present a general simulation-based periodic PM optimization model, which uses the posterior estimates to simulate the number of operational equipment failures, under a given periodic PM policy. Optimal periodic PM policies, under the classical maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian estimates are obtained for a few datasets. Limitations of the ML approach are revealed for a dataset from the literature, in which the use of ML estimates of the parameters, in the maintenance optimization model, fails to capture a trivial optimal PM policy. Finally, we introduce a single-stage and a two-stage formulation of the risk-averse periodic PM optimization model, with imperfect PMs and minimal CMs. Such models apply to a class of complex equipment with many parts, operational failures of which are addressed by replacing or repairing a few parts, thereby not affecting the failure rate of the equipment under consideration. For general values of PM age reduction factors, we provide sufficient conditions to establish the convexity of the first and second moments of the number of failures, and the risk-averse expected total maintenance cost, over a finite planning horizon. For increasing Weibull rates and a general class of increasing and convex failure rates, we show that these convexity results are independent of the PM age reduction factors. In general, the optimal periodic PM policy under the single-stage model is no better than the optimal two-stage policy. But if PMs are assumed perfect, then we establish that the single-stage and the two-stage optimization models are equivalent. / text

Martina Vaníková Summary The proposed thesis titled Latin Verbal Prefix ex- in Regard of Aspect is a pilot study that deals with the ways of expressing aspect in Latin, which is based on the detailed analysis of the functions of the verbal prefix ex- as one of the important components of this category. It also tries to find the method for the future research on the matter. In the theoretical part of the thesis the author gives summary of existing theories on aspect in general, with special attention given to the theories on aspect in the Czech and Latin language. The author defines the terms "aspect", "Aktionsart" and "situation type" at great length, and she particularly sets light to the term "telicity", distinguishing the "inherent telicity" from "maximizing". The practical part consist of: 1. a detailed analysis of all the occurrences of the indicative imperfect of the verbs with the prefix ex- from the corpus, which comprises of all well-preserved Latin texts from Plautus to Cicero; 2. an analysis of the indicative future and present tense forms of the selected verbs with the prefix ex-. A plm implementation for aerospace systems engineering-conceptual rotorcraft design

The thesis will discuss the Systems Engineering phase of an original Conceptual Design Engineering Methodology for Aerospace Engineering-Vehicle Synthesis. This iterative phase is shown to benefit from digitization of Integrated Product&Process Design (IPPD) activities, through the application of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) technologies. Requirements analysis through the use of Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and 7 MaP tools is explored as an illustration. A "Requirements Data Manager" (RDM) is used to show the ability to reduce the time and cost to design for both new and legacy/derivative designs. Here the COTS tool Teamcenter Systems Engineering (TCSE) is used as the RDM. The utility of the new methodology is explored through consideration of a legacy RFP based vehicle design proposal and associated aerospace engineering. The 2001 American Helicopter Society (AHS) 18th Student Design Competition RFP is considered as a starting point for the Systems Engineering phase. A Conceptual Design Engineering activity was conducted in 2000/2001 by Graduate students (including the author) in Rotorcraft Engineering at the Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta GA. This resulted in the "Kingfisher" vehicle design, an advanced search and rescue rotorcraft capable of performing the "Perfect Storm" mission, from the movie of the same name. The associated requirements, architectures, and work breakdown structure data sets for the Kingfisher are used to relate the capabilities of the proposed Integrated Digital Environment (IDE). The IDE is discussed as a repository for legacy knowledge capture, management, and design template creation. A primary thesis theme is to promote the automation of the up-front conceptual definition of complex systems, specifically aerospace vehicles, while anticipating downstream preliminary and full spectrum lifecycle design activities. The thesis forms a basis for additional discussions of PLM tool integration across the engineering, manufacturing, MRO and EOL lifecycle phases to support business management processes.

Calcul flottant haute performance sur circuits reconfigurables / High-performance floating-point computing on reconfigurable circuits

De plus en plus de constructeurs proposent des accélérateurs de calculs à base de circuits reconfigurables FPGA, cette technologie présentant bien plus de souplesse que le microprocesseur. Valoriser cette flexibilité dans le domaine de l'accélération de calcul flottant en utilisant les langages de description de circuits classiques (VHDL ou Verilog) reste toutefois très difficile, voire impossible parfois. Cette thèse a contribué au développement du logiciel FloPoCo, qui offre aux utilisateurs familiers avec VHDL un cadre C++ de description d'opérateurs arithmétiques génériques adapté au calcul reconfigurable. Ce cadre distingue explicitement la fonctionnalité combinatoire d'un opérateur, et la problématique de son pipeline pour une précision, une fréquence et un FPGA cible donnés. Afin de pouvoir utiliser FloPoCo pour concevoir des opérateurs haute performance en virgule flottante, il a fallu d'abord concevoir des blocs de bases optimisés. Nous avons d'abord développé des additionneurs pipelinés autour des lignes de propagation de retenue rapides, puis, à l'aide de techniques de pavages, nous avons conçu de gros multiplieurs, possiblement tronqués, utilisant des petits multiplieurs. L'évaluation de fonctions élémentaires en flottant implique souvent l'évaluation en virgule fixe d'une fonction. Nous présentons un opérateur générique de FloPoCo qui prend en entrée l'expression de la fonction à évaluer, avec ses précisions d'entrée et de sortie, et construit un évaluateur polynomial optimisé de cette fonction. Ce bloc de base a permis de développer des opérateurs en virgule flottante pour la racine carrée et l'exponentielle qui améliorent considérablement l'état de l'art. Nous avons aussi travaillé sur des techniques de compilation avancée pour adapter l'exécution d'un code C aux pipelines flexibles de nos opérateurs. FloPoCo a pu ainsi être utilisé pour implanter sur FPGA des applications complètes. / Due to their potential performance and unmatched flexibility, FPGA-based accelerators are part of more and more high-performance computing systems. However, exploiting this flexibility for accelerating floating-point computations by manually using classical circuit description languages (VHDL or Verilog) is very difficult, and sometimes impossible. This thesis has contributed to the development of the FloPoCo software, a C++ framework for describing flexible FPGA-specific arithmetic operators. This framework explicitly separates the description of the combinatorial functionality of an arithmetic operator, and its pipelining for a given precision, operating frequency and target FPGA.In order to be able to use FloPoCo for designing high performance floating-point operators, we first had to design the optimized basic blocks. We first developed pipelined addition architectures exploiting the fast-carry lines present in modern FPGAs. Next, we focused on multiplication architectures. Using tiling techniques, we proposed novel architectures for large multipliers, but also truncated multipliers, based on the multipliers found in modern FPGA DSP blocks. We also present a generic FloPoCo operator which inputs the expression of a function, its input and output precisions, and builds an optimized polynomial evaluator for the fixed-point evaluation of this function. Using this building block we have designed floating-point operators for the square-root and exponential functions which significantly outperform existing operators. Finally, we also made use of advanced compilation techniques for adapting the execution of a C program to the flexible pipelines of our operators.
