Logic Duality, Conformity, and Survival in the French Film Industry, 1987-2008 / Dualité de logiques, conformité et survie dans l’industrie cinématographique française, 1987-2008

Jourdan, Julien 14 December 2011 (has links)
This dissertation explores how logic duality, that is the coexistence of two institutional logics in an industry, affects firm strategic behaviors, and how in return firm strategic behaviors contribute (or not) to maintain logics segregated. Theoretically, I investigate the liability firms face when entering industries governed by a different logic, the wayincumbent organizations respond to the conformity demands of logic foreigners, and the determinants of firm-level institutional capital. Empirically, I study investment funds, filmmaking organizations and production firms in the French film industry (1987-2008), and find strong support for the proposed theory. By revealing strategies available to firms in dual-logicsettings and highlighting sources of institutional capital, this study contributes to the strategic management literature. The result is also a contribution to our understanding of why industries resist the “inexorable push towards homogenization” predicted by new institutional theory. By shedding light on the positive and negative effects of logic duality for firms, this work has also implications for practice.

Fassatoui, Omar 04 July 2013 (has links)
Biomedecine as a new form of medecine changed many social realities its original context. In others conttexts of the world where religion is present on a political and legal level, biomedecine can be more that problematic as it may be in contradiction with religious rules or religious consturctions of social realities. In all contexts, it' is up to the law to solve these problems and find a way to balance the need for medical solutions and religious and ethical issues.

Assignations et catégorisations des Roms : une analyse sociolinguistique des pratiques langagières dans les campi nomadi (Italie) / Assignations and categorizations of Roma people : a sociolinguistic analysis of language practices in the nomadi campi (Italy)

Kakouch, Sabira 17 December 2018 (has links)
This doctoral research, carried out in two campi nomadi (Rome, Italy) is underpinned by a sociolinguistic approach that aims to analyse the plurality and heterogeneity of language practices observed among Roma inhabitants. Grasping the complexity and diversity of these practices requires an undertanding of the social space where they take place. The campo, as an anthropological living place and fieldwork will therefore be understood taking into account the human relations that emerge and the places that the Other is assigned or those one grants oneself. The objective is to proceed by "fragmentation" (Lorcerie, 2009), focusing on representations and individual discourses to account for the heterogeneity of practices. This also involves a process of deconstruction and comprehension of the mechanisms of ethnicization and identity, and of social and linguistic assignment that contribute to the development of categorizations of Roma groups. This research therefore starts from a specific social space, from an Italian "specialismo" (Tosi, 2007) so as to provide an analysis of the fragmented sociolinguistic practices of its inhabitants and to expound the "plural experience of their speech" (Canut, 2007)

Struktura a jednoduchost u Leibnize / Structure and Simplicity in Leibniz

Veselský, Matěj January 2018 (has links)
The thesis aims to present Leibniz's monadic system as the simplest conceivable structure. To this end, the thesis employs both contemporary literature concerned with formal ontology and its logic, semantics and the nature of reference; and Leibniz's own writings coupled with correspondent commentaries, including articles transcending selected interpretive issues into present-day discussions on actualised versions of one of the essential Leibnizian principles: the identity of indiscernibles. The exposition proceeds in three steps: (i) developing concepts of structure, determination and reference in critical confrontation with contemporary approaches, then (ii) applying those concepts to the interpretation of Leibniz's principle of identity of indiscenibles and illuminating therewith links between ontology and semantics, and eventually (iii) utilizing those findings in clarifying the mirroring relation constitutive of the monadic structure as represented a) in Leibniz's own spatiotemporal illustrations and b) in formal models in secondary literature. Acknowledging that the simplest conceivable structure, which is the monadic structure, can neither be satisfactorily expressed by spatiotemporal illustrations, nor can it be represented in formal system, itself forming the limit of extrinsic...

To narrate the scientific facts of the time, Fontenelle deals, the book first published in 1686, the form of dialogues between supposedly caught him and a marquese on their evening walks around the castle gardens in the Summer. Both talk about the design of astronomical systems from Ptolomy and Copernicus. The Moon, the planets and the possibility of existence of other worlds like our own, are also discussed during the meetings. Interesse pÃblico em mÃdias legislativas: um estudo da produÃÃo noticiosa da AgÃncia CÃmara NotÃcias / Public interest in legislative media: a study of news production by the House of Representativesâ News Agency

Leidyanne Viana Nogueira 05 May 2017 (has links)
This research aims to evaluate the public interest present in the news production of the House of Representativesâ News Agency. The Editorial Handbook of the Communications Department of the Brazilian House of Representatives points out the public interest as the main criterion of newsworthiness of its vehicles. The focus on the public interest is the main argument in the defense that these legislative media carry out public communication. It represents, therefore, a crucial element in the justification of the very existence of such vehicles before society and its credibility, both as a source for the press, but mainly as a means of information for the citizen. It is also known that journalism itself is considered a space of public interest, although this perspective is often adopted as a discourse rather than an effective practice. Despite the ambiguity surrounding the nature of the vehicle we analyze, between institutional or public communication, but considering the editorial proposal of the Communication of the House of Representatives, we use as theoretical basis the studies of the public interest in Journalism. Given the complexity of the proposed objective, as a consequence of the indeterminacy around the concept of public interest, we proceeded to an empirical analysis in three stages, which represent different levels or dimensions of achievement of the public interest, applied in a corpus of 211 news produced by House of Representativesâ News Agency. In the first stage, we separate the topics by subject and look for aspects related to the public interest: Relevance/significance, Notoriety, Impact, Transparency, Consequences and Principles/values (SILVA, 2002; WOLF, 1999; MOREIRA, 2006; CHAPARRO, 2012). In the second, we seek to visualize the public interest in the type of fact reported, according to the classification of Gomis (1991, 2002) in Results (events that present fait accompli), Explosions (unexpected events with drastic consequences), Displacements (steps or phases of an event) and Apparitions (events characterized by oral manifestation); Finally, we try to understand the public interest in the way the content is developed, evaluating the plurality of sources and the equilibrium (ROTHBERG, 2011; SERRANO, 2011). Another resource adopted was the realization of interviews with some professionals of the Agency, in order to better understand its production process. After the analysis, we reach the following conclusions: the Agencyâs material has attributes of public interest, but it is necessary to analyze other dimensions to verify compliance with this criterion; Any kind of fact may present a public interest, but the Displacements and Appearances are more important than Results and Explosions when considering the specificity of the Agency; The plurality is quite limited or even non-existent in the Agency because the news is centered on parliamentary voices or brings voices of the society only in cases of its participation in the activities of the House of Representatives. In this way, we can say that there is a potential of public interest in the House of Representativesâ News Agency, especially for the attributes linked to its central theme. However, the prevalence of institutional criteria on values of journalism or public communication itself prevents this potential from being higher.

Humans Aren't Boxes, Art Isn't Finite

Humphreys, Brianne Alta 01 January 2019 (has links)
I am bored. All around me are systems that perpetuate repetitive, reductive, and mundane modes of living. In an attempt to counter a culture obsessed with singular ways of existence and bite-sized perfection, I utilize moving mediums of video and performance to dive head first into a vast array of sloppy sincerity. The crisp, white-washed, analytical, and restrictive is loudly replaced with the empirical, haphazard, and instinctual. My intention is to create and encourage raw, performative-based work that is as multifaceted as unbridled life itself. This alive and physical practice hosts a conglomeration of sweat, memories, heartbreaks, hymn singing, line dancing, cake eating, wig wearing, bedroom jamming, live streaming, code switching, hallway running, body dragging, easter egg hiding, angst, and hair salons. This is a refusal to slice up, organize, and distill myself and my work into one dish with convoluted, explanatory rhetoric stamped with institutionalized approval and topped with the cherry of MFA status for the sake of being justified and relevant. I have zero obligations to make polished art, resolve things, or pinpoint what makes me “me”, because humans are not boxes and art does not have to be finite.

Ethnic Conflict, Electoral Systems, and Power Sharing in Divided Societies

Miller, Sara Ann 09 June 2006 (has links)
This paper investigates the relationship between ethnic conflict, electoral systems, and power sharing in ethnically divided societies. The cases of Guyana, Fiji, Sri Lanka, Lebanon, Mauritius, and Trinidad and Tobago are considered. Electoral systems are denoted based on presidential versus parliamentary system, and on proportional representation versus majoritarian/plurality. The paper concludes that, while electoral systems are important, other factors like the power distribution between ethnic groups, and ensuring a non-zero-sum game may be as important.

Mångfald på museerna : Arbetet med mångfald vid kommunala museer, länsmuseer och statliga museer ur ett kulturpolitiskt perspektiv / Plurality at the Museums : Efforts of Plurality at Civic Museums, Provincial Museums and State Museums from a Culture Political Perspective

Soldal, Kristoffer January 2012 (has links)
How do museums work with plurality in their organizations and in the production of exhibitions and other activities? This paper examines how civic museums, provincial museums and state museums work with plurality from a perspective of culture policies, particularly in relation to the government bill Tid för kultur, issued by the Swedish government in 2009. All together I examine 25 museums and their efforts to include marginalized groups in their activities and exhibitions. To do so I have studied four possible measures that are available for the museums. This includes the following: projects that pay attention to a marginalized group or their living conditions; projects that are specifically created for a marginalized group; projects that include a marginalized group in the museums preparations; and projects were museums give full responsibility to a marginalized group. I have also examined how plurality have been presented – as isolated cultures and cultural expressions or as hybrids and interchangeable phenomenons – and to what extent the museums are ready to involve marginalized groups in their physical environment and in their exhibition and activity programs. Based on three different levels of conduct I evaluate how far the museums have reached and what differences there are between civic museums, provincial museums and state museums. My research shows that Swedish museums in general are on their way to work successfully with plurality and establish a plurality perspective in the whole organization. The research also shows that there are differences between civic museums, provincial museums and state museums. In general, state museums are better to include marginalized groups in their productions and to firmly establish a perspective of plurality in their organization. On the contrary, the research shows that many museums lack certain features in their efforts to work towards a marginalized group. One of those features is the ability to make these efforts part of the museums permanent activities. Civic museums and provincial museums also have a greater freedom of strengthen their regional identity than compared to the state museums ability to strengthen the national identity. A circumstance that can have consequences for culture policies in Sweden and the future of plurality efforts at the museums.
