Rhythm and Rhetoric: A Linguistic Analysis of Barack Obama's Inaugural Address

Batluk, Liilia January 2011 (has links)
In this essay I shall analyze Barack Obama’s Inaugural Address, January, 2009 from the perspective of various linguistic techniques. More specifically, I shall propose and focus on the idea that the composition of the speech has an aim to create a unity of the speaker and the audience in order to deliver the message. Moreover, the speaker maintains the atmosphere of unity throughout the speech, so that the speech produces an effect when the audience becomes a co-author of it. My thesis will also discuss some aspects of persuasive strategies employed in the speech from those dating back as long as Ancient Greece to temporal discourses. The aim is to analyze how the use of a number of linguistic approaches creates a speech which senses an agreement and co-operation between the orator and the audience.

Převod prvků jazykové expresivity při simultánním tlumočení / Linguistic Elements of Expressivity in French to Czech Simultaneous

Herák, Jakub January 2015 (has links)
The central focus of this Master's thesis is to describe the ways the elements of linguistic expressivity used in political speeches are transformed in French-to-Czech simultaneous interpreting. In the introductory part of the present thesis, we provide a summary of previous research on the means of expressivity in political speeches, which is completed by a description of the process of simultaneous interpreting. In this way, we intend to define possibilities of transfer of expressive elements in the French-to-Czech language combination. The second part consists of an in-depth contrastive analysis of original French and Czech political speeches followed by a comparison of the former with their interpreted versions. In the third step, we compared the original Czech speeches with interpretations. Using our own methodology, we assessed collected data and came to the conclusion that in French-to- Czech simultaneous interpreting, expressivity rate decreases. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

Dominance, hostilité et expressivité vocale dans le débat politique ˸ étude perceptive et acoustique du conseil municipal de Montreuil (93100) / Dominance, hostility and vocal expressivity in political debate ˸ a perceptual and acoustic study of the Montreuil Municipal Council (93100)

Kouklia, Charlotte 19 January 2019 (has links)
This dissertation studies the relationship between the expression of controlled aggressive attitudes and the perception of dominance, based on extracts from televised sessions of the Municipal Council of Montreuil during 2013; a period marked by a lively and hostile political climate. We constituted a corpus of spontaneous speech extracts from the Mayor, Dominique Voynet, and four of her opponents. During subsequent recording sessions, the five speakers were asked to read transcriptions of their own speech extracts in a neutral tone (25 stimuli per speaker). They also participated in a self-evaluation questionnaire that focused on the perception of emotional profiles in their own stimuli. The results of the speakers’ perceptive evaluations were compared to those of a control group of naïve listeners. All speakers were perceived as slightly hostile, discontent and dominant, despite the variability observed in the self-evaluated profiles. The original and re-read extracts were compared in their prosodic- syntactic structure as well as their temporal and melodic characteristics. We show that: 1) some speakers seem to rely mostly on melodic parameters whereas others primarily use temporal parameters, 2) nevertheless, general trends emerge regarding the speech correlates of hostility and dominance in our corpus, notably: a) discrepancies between the syntactic and the prosodic structure of the extracts, b) reduction or absence of pre-pausal final syllabic lengthening, c) large variations in F0 range on both sides of silent pauses.

Political Parties on the Move: Computational Scaling Method Applied to Swedish Parliamentary Debates / Politiska Partier i Rörelse: Datorbaserad Skalningsmetod Applicerad på Svenska Riksdagsdebatter

Källström Ståhlgren, Carl-Oscar January 2022 (has links)
Over the years, a variety of methods have been used in order toestimate policy positions for political parties in national parliaments. This papersets out to apply a novel computational method called Wordfish and apply it to aheavily under-researched form of political text, parliamentary speeches.Quantitative studies of this sort are even more rare the case in Sweden in whichquantitative studies on parliamentary speeches is close to non-existent. In anattempt to contribute to fill the gap in literature this study uses scaling techniqueusing word frequencies and to estimate positions of 4 Swedish political partiesalong two dimensions in political space. By observing the estimated movement bythese 4 parties over a 20-year time period one can draw conclusions of theSwedish political space and how it has shifted over time. One can also evaluatethe chosen method on this specific research material, a combination that has notbeen seen before. The results suggest that there is fine tuning that needs to bedone when using Wordfish considering the output was not in line with conventionalwisdom and previous research. The studied did show interesting movementtowards the authoritarian extreme by the two largest parties in Swedish nationalpolitics.

When political expression turns into hate speech : is limitation through legislative criminalisation the answer?

Vosloo, Michelle 10 1900 (has links)
This study investigates the interaction between freedom and limitation as applied to political expression and hate speech. The need for the limitation of hate speech, with its inherent risk of escalation into other serious crimes such as genocide, is established. The view of the South African courts is identified as pro-limitation but generally respectful of the right to freedom of expression. A lacuna in current constitutional law, common law and legislative remedies is evident and the various ways in which limitation can be effected are explored; the researcher finds for criminalisation as an effective measure to address this lacuna in hate speech regulation. The importance of complying with the international call for the criminalisation of hate speech is analysed. Insight is gained regarding what would be an effective model for criminalisation. Here lessons are taken from foreign comparatives that have successfully criminalised hate speech in the context of their cultural identity, history and social needs. Ultimately, a framework for effective hate speech criminalisation in South Africa is formulated. / Constitutional, International & Indigenous Law / LL.M

The first part of the thesis is focused on the rhetoric and stylistics, which contribute to the typological definition of texts falling within the French political discourse. The second part is based on an analysis of three essential political speeches Nicolas Sarkozy.

Análisis del discurso de los actores sociales del documental “El choque de dos mundos” / Analysis of the discourse of social actors from documentary “When Two Worlds Collide”

Vilcapoma Yuli, Karla Josefine 30 April 2020 (has links)
The analysis of the discourse has an interdisciplinary nature, discourse can manifest many topics at the same time. В., Sobakina, V. V. January 2021 (has links)
The topic of the present graduation thesis is “Emotional, expressive and evaluative translation equivalence of political speeches (by the material of campaign speeches of the 2020 US presidential candidates)”. The purpose of the study is to identify ways of achieving emotional, evaluative and expressive equivalence in translation, which will make it possible to create an equivalent translation of the original speech texts of the US presidential candidates. The subject of the research is emotional, evaluative and expressive equivalence in translation of political speeches. The scope of the research includes translation matches and techniques used to convey linguistic units with emotional, evaluative and expressive connotations and figures of speech while translating political speeches from the English language into Russian. The study is based on communicational pragmatic paradigm. We used a descriptive method, hermeneutic method, statistical technique, valence method and approaches of stylistics and psycholinguistics. The work is novel in that it examines ways of achieving three types of translation equivalence of political speeches at once and explains variants of translation of the studied units. The results of the research may be used in translation and interpreting practice, as a teaching material for students majoring in translation.
