Cosmologia usando aglomerados de galáxias no Dark Energy Survey / Cosmology with Galaxy Clusters in the Dark Energy SurveyMichel Aguena da Silva 03 August 2017 (has links)
Abstract Galaxy clusters are the largest bound structures of the Universe. Their distribution maps the dark matter halos formed in the deep potential wells of the dark matter field. As a result, the abundance of galaxy clusters is highly sensitive to the expansion of the universe as well as the growth of dark matter perturbations, representing a powerful tool for cosmological purposes. In the current era of large scale surveys with enormous volumes of data, the statistical quantities from the objects surveyed (galaxies, clusters, supernovae, quasars, etc) can be used to extract cosmological information. The main goal of this thesis is to explore the potential use of galaxy clusters for constraining cosmology. To that end, we study the halo formation theory, the detection of halos and clusters, the statistical tools required to quarry cosmological information from detected clusters and finally the effects of optical detection. In the composition of the theoretical prediction for the halo number counts, we analyze how each cosmological parameter of interest affects the halo abundance, the importance of the use of the halo covariance, and the effectiveness of halos on cosmological constraints. The redshift range and the use of prior knowledge of parameters are also investigated in detail. The theoretical prediction is tested on a dark matter simulation, where the cosmology is known and a dark matter halo catalog is available. In the analysis of the simulation we find that it is possible to obtain good constraints for some parameters such as (Omega_m,w,sigma_8,n_s) while other parameters (h,Omega_b) require external priors from different cosmological probes. In the statistical methods, we discuss the concept of likelihood, priors and the posterior distribution. The Fisher Matrix formalism and its application on galaxy clusters is presented, and used for making forecasts of ongoing and future surveys. For the real analysis of data we introduce Monte Carlo Markov Chain (MCMC) methods, which do not assume Gaussianity of the parameters distribution, but have a much higher computational cost relative to the Fisher Matrix. The observational effects are studied in detail. Using the Fisher Matrix approach, we carefully explore the effects of completeness and purity. We find in which cases it is worth to include extra parameters in order to lower the mass threshold. An interesting finding is the fact that including completeness and purity parameters along with cosmological parameters does not degrade dark energy constraints if other observational effects are already being considered. The use of priors on nuisance parameters does not seem to affect the dark energy constraints, unless these priors are better than 1\\%.The WaZp cluster finder was run on a cosmological simulation, producing a cluster catalog. Comparing the detected galaxy clusters to the dark matter halos, the observational effects were investigated and measured. Using these measurements, we were able to include corrections for the prediction of cluster counts, resulting in a good agreement with the detected cluster abundance. The results and tools developed in this thesis can provide a framework for the analysis of galaxy clusters for cosmological purposes. Several codes were created and tested along this work, among them are an efficient code to compute theoretical predictions of halo abundance and covariance, a code to estimate the abundance and covariance of galaxy clusters including multiple observational effects and a pipeline to match and compare halo/cluster catalogs. This pipeline has been integrated to the Science Portal of the Laboratório Interinstitucional de e-Astronomia (LIneA) and is being used to automatically assess the quality of cluster catalogs produced by the Dark Energy Survey (DES) collaboration and will be used in other future surveys.

The relevance of prior use in trade mark conflictsAlberts, Riaan Willem 31 May 2005 (has links)
This thesis investigates the role of prior use in common and statutory trade mark law. In the United States a pertinent requirement is priority of use. In the United Kingdom and South Africa, a reputation must be present. In the United Kingdom a plaintiff is required to have goodwill in the country, but in the United States and South Africa it is not required.
The conception of a mark does not qualify for protection. It is not required that a business must have actually entered the market. In the United States the general approach is that a plaintiff will not receive protection in a remote area, but regard must be had to zones of natural expansion. British and South African law is the same, and protection may be obtained in areas where there is no trading. Where a dual reputation exists, neither party will be able to act against the other. The mere fact that the user of a mark was aware of the use thereof by another person, does not exclude protection.
A trade mark application can be opposed on the basis of another application, combined with use of a mark, or on the ground of prior use. In some instances the fact that a mark has been filed will influence the burden of proof. In general, a registration can be expunged on the same grounds as would constitute grounds of opposition.
The concurrent use of a mark can form the basis for the registration of a mark. In the United States, the use must have taken place prior to the filing date of the other party, but in the United Kingdom and South Africa, prior to the own filing date. In the latter two countries, knowledge of a mark is not necessarily exclusionary.
Prior use is generally accepted as a defence to an infringement action. It is, however, noted that in various countries, it is only use prior to the relevant date that will be protected, and there is not necessarily a right to extend the scope of use concerned. / Mercantile Law / LL.D. An evaluation of an instructor-led and self-managed computer software training courseFalkenberg, Ryan James 11 1900 (has links)
This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of an instructor-led and a self-managed computer
training course. A sample of forty nine (n=49) previously disadvantaged South African adult
learners was used. Half the sample was randomly assigned to the instructor-led course, while the
other half was assigned to the self-managed course.
Data dealing with the course content and design, subject demographics, previous computer
experience, preferred learning style, and learning potential was collected prior to each course.
After the course, the ability to create key outcomes using the learned software was assessed, as
well as subject perceptions of the course and various support and performance system factors. The
results showed that there was no significant difference between the performance on the
competence assessment of the students from the two groups. The data did, however, indicate a
stronger preference for the self-managed approach. A number of limitations to the study were also
noted. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / M.A. (Industrial Psychology)

Recognition of prior learning for designated employees at the workplace : a case study of Eskom Distribution employees in the Northern Region, South AfricaMakeketa, Mary-Jane Selokela 06 1900 (has links)
The present study examines whether recognition of prior learning (RPL) is being implemented in the workplace, its effectiveness and impact on improving the lives of the previously disadvantaged groups and its contribution towards enhancing a culture of lifelong learning in South Africa. The main aim of this research is to explore the implementation of RPL and the extent of its effectiveness in the workplace, with particular focus on Northern Region of the Eskom Distribution. This was hoped to be addressed through the following objectives: The first objective was to determine the extent to which Eskom employees are aware of the RPL practices and to ascertain the level of awareness among employees. The second objective was to explore the current trends and practices on RPL at the workplace. The third objective was to determine and identify if there are any gaps. The last objective was to suggest ways that can be used to strengthen the RPL practice in the workplace. To this end, a questionnaire was administered to a randomly selected sample of 242 employees. In addition, interviews were conducted with three purposively selected (information rich) participants. The findings reveal that Eskom has policies and guidelines on RPL and a clearly stipulated purpose which is in line with the National Qualifications Framework (NQF), however, the current RPL policies and procedures have not been piloted within the Northern Region, the information has not yet reached everyone in the business, and employees’ level of awareness is still low. Findings also reveal that RPL does exist in Distribution and efforts to implement it are visible/traceable. A number of milestones and achievements are noted in the business as a whole as well as in the region, although a lot still needs to be done to ensure full and effective implementation. The last finding shows that there are a number of gaps and challenges impeding the success of RPL. These range from capacity building to quality assurance. On the basis of the findings, a number of recommendations to strengthen the RPL practice in the workplace are proposed and suggested. / Psychology of Education / M. Ed. (Psychology of Education)

Survival analysis and accession optimization of prior enlisted United States Marine Corps officersHoglin, Phillip J. 03 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited / The purpose of this thesis is to firstly analyze the determinants on the survival of United States Marine Corps Officers, and secondly, to develop the methodology to optimize the accessions of prior and non-prior enlisted officers. Using data from the Marine Corps Officer Accession Career file (MCCOAC), the Cox Proportional Hazards Model is used to estimate the effects of officer characteristics on their survival as a commissioned officer in the USMC. A Markov model for career transition is combined with fiscal data to determine the optimum number of prior and non-prior enlisted officers under the constraints of force structure and budget. The findings indicate that prior enlisted officers have a better survival rate than their non-prior enlisted counterparts. Additionally, officers who are married, commissioned through MECEP, graduate in the top third of their TBS class, and are assigned to a combat support MOS have a better survival rate than officers who are unmarried, commissioned through USNA, graduate in the middle third of their TBS class, and are assigned to either combat or combat service support MOS. The findings also indicate that the optimum number of prior enlisted officer accessions may be considerably lower than recent trends and may differ across MOS. Based on the findings; it is recommended that prior enlisted officer accession figures be reviewed. / Major, Australian Army

From the human capital to capability : an analysis of individual pathways within the french process of accreditation of prior experienceLecourt, Anne-juliette 28 October 2011 (has links)
This thesis analyses the individual pathways within the process of accreditation of prior experience (VAE), fighting inequalities of qualification access. This new right makes people responsible to put work experience to advantage, through getting qualification on the basis of work and individual experience, without education. But, to open up a new legal way doesn’t make this right a reality. The aim is to observe phenomena of differentiations relative to the display of the VAE. We have enrich ressourcist and utilitarist hypothesis, which have been derived from labour market theories (Human Capital and Signalling Theories). We ask the question of the real display of the individual right of VAE and the notion of experience. Consequently, from the Capability perspective, we built an original framework to understand in what extent individual pathways depend on personal, environmental and social factors, not only experience which is expressed in number of years, as a rule in the Human Capital and Signalling Theories. These environmental, social and individual conversion factors establish the display of individual resources and rights within the VAE process. This set forms an individual structure of constraints and opportunities and determines the individual pathways. The Experience is multidimensional and diffused through these elements. This model, based on a national survey, highlights existence of different types of individual logics of choices, which means different real possibilities of actions, more or less constricted, and underlines overestimated, underestimated and invisible inequalities.

Approches bayésiennes en tomographie micro-ondes : applications à l'imagerie du cancer du sein / Bayesian approaches to microwave tomography : application to breast cancer imagingGharsalli, Leila 10 April 2015 (has links)
This work concerns the problem of microwave tomography for application to biomedical imaging. The aim is to retreive both permittivity and conductivity of an unknown object from measurements of the scattered field that results from its interaction with a known interrogating wave. Such a problem is said to be inverse opposed to the associated forward problem that consists in calculating the scattered field while the interrogating wave and the object are known. The resolution of the inverse problem requires the prior construction of the associated forward model. This latter is based on an integral representation of the electric field resulting in two coupled integral equations whose discrete counterparts are obtained by means of the method of moments.Regarding the inverse problem, in addition to the fact that the physical equations involved in the forward modeling make it nonlinear, it is also mathematically ill-posed in the sense of Hadamard, which means that the conditions of existence, uniqueness and stability of the solution are not simultaneously guaranteed. Hence, solving this problem requires its prior regularization which usually involves the introduction of a priori information on the sought solution. This resolution is done here in a Bayesian probabilistic framework where we introduced a priori knowledge appropriate to the sought object by considering it to be composed of a finite number of homogeneous materials distributed in compact and homogeneous regions. This information is introduced through a "Gauss-Markov-Potts" model. In addition, the Bayesian computation gives the posterior distribution of all the unknowns, knowing the a priori and the object. We proceed then to identify the posterior estimators via variational approximation methods and thereby to reconstruct the image of the desired object. The main contributions of this work are methodological and algorithmic. They are illustrated by an application of microwave imaging to breast cancer detection. The latter is in itself a very important and original aspect of the thesis. Indeed, the detection of breast cancer using microwave imaging is a very interesting alternative to X-ray mammography, but it is still at an exploratory stage.

In the face of “The Age of Access", traditional knowledge associated with biodiversity of traditional societies has become raw material of the biotechnology industry, being subject of bioprospecting and intellectual property rights for food, pharmaceutical and research and development companies. Based on the principles of prior informed consent and benefits sharing, benefits provided by Convention on Biological Diversity and Medida Provisória nº.2.186-16/01, the interested in bioprospecting of traditional knowledge must be authorized by their holders and share the benefits derived from research and development of bioproducts. However, in respect the benefits sharing, this can lead to the imposition of private and capitalist values, causing risks to the social dynamics and cultural practices of these communities, which are performed under collective and community values. From this finding, the present study aims to analyze to what extent the principles of prior informed consent and benefit sharing are able to promote the conservation of environmental goods of traditional societies, when the developed products are based on the traditional knowledge. For this, the research uses the dialectic approach method, with exploratory objective, through a bibliographic and documentary research, from an interdisciplinary perspective. Even in the face of a international e and national regulation, researchers and industry constantly use discourses that seek unprotect the traditional knowledge and legitimize the non-obtainment and non-realization of the prior informed consent and benefit sharing. Because of the peculiarities of traditional societies, which consider themselves in collective, community and solidarity aspects, these communities have a different culture, being the traditional knowledge associated integrated in your cultural diversity. Given this diversity and its relationship with the environment, social movements in the Latin America and Brasil influenced the incorporation of rights in the Federal Constitution of 1988, emerging sociobiodiversity as new legal category. With the capitalist and development logic of the biotechnology industry, which does not consider aspects of sociobiodiversity, intercultural dialogue and management of biotechnology innovation shows a way to manage the complexity and the different views of the actors involved in the practice of bioprospecting traditional knowledge, inserting socioenvironmental rights in this context. From the establishment of the existence of other legal requirements for bioprospecting, such as the principles of precaution, intergenerational equity and social function of property, is criticized the prior informed consent and benefits sharing, showing that the treatment of these should be done in harmony with other existing legal requirements in order to be able to conserve the sociobiodiversity of traditional societies, ensuring the sustainable use of their resources and maintenance of their lives. It is suggested in this context, some criteria to be considered when defining the benefits and its allocations: 1) sociobiodiversity aspects of traditional groups, from the values, cultural practices and social organizations;2) the environment where live these groups and where will be accessed and where the genetic resources of biodiversity; 3)application and granting patents and any benefits jointly with traditional societies.
