Semidefinite programming in combinatorial optimization with applications to coding theory and geometry

Passuello, Alberto 17 December 2013 (has links) (PDF)
We apply the semidefinite programming method to obtain a new upper bound on the cardinality of codes made of subspaces of a linear vector space over a finite field. Such codes are of interest in network coding.Next, with the same method, we prove an upper bound on the cardinality of sets avoiding one distance in the Johnson space, which is essentially Schrijver semidefinite program. This bound is used to improve existing results on the measurable chromatic number of the Euclidean space. We build a new hierarchy of semidefinite programs whose optimal values give upper bounds on the independence number of a graph. This hierarchy is based on matrices arising from simplicial complexes. We show some properties that our hierarchy shares with other classical ones. As an example, we show its application to the problem of determining the independence number of Paley graphs.

Chateauneuf, Michel 29 November 2002 (has links) (PDF)

Baboin, Anne-Céline 27 January 2011 (has links) (PDF)

Perceived performance risk and its influence on Abandoned Cart Syndrome (ACS) - An exploratory study

Moore, Simon Scott January 2004 (has links)
Despite predictions of Internet shopping reaching 6.9 trillion dollars by the end of 2004, research is now suggesting many online consumers are still very reluctant to complete the online shopping process. A number of authors have attributed consumers' reluctance to purchase online to apparent barriers, however, such barriers have not been fully examined within a theoretical context. While most studies of consumers' decision to shop on the Internet have focussed on key shopping determinants, this thesis builds a conceptual model grounded in consumer behaviour theory. In particular, this thesis explores the application of the perceived risk theoretical framework, specifically looking at one dimension of perceived risk theory - performance risk and the influence it has on the phenomenon of Internet Abandoned Cart Syndrome (ACS). To explore this phenomenon, a number of extrinsic cues are identified as playing a major role in the performance evaluation process of online purchases. The combination of these elements enabled the researcher to develop a conceptual model from which a series of propositions were drawn. To acquire pertinent data and investigate each proposition, this study used a combination of indirect and direct techniques, namely projective techniques in the form of a third-person vignette, a structured tick-box questionnaire and finally semi-structured interviews. The results suggest that collectively the extrinsic cues of brand, reputation, design and price have an overall impact on the performance evaluation process just prior to an online purchase. Varying these cues either positively or negatively had a strong impact on performance evaluation. The conclusion of this study suggests consumers are often unable to measure the full extent of risk-taking directly. In the majority of cases, consumers are guided by numerous factors, some intrinsic, others extrinsic. E-tailers with an established reputation, a well designed web site with known brands and a balanced pricing strategy reduce the perceived performance risks associated with purchasing online, thus reducing the occurrence of ACS.

Cancer et fin de vie : la question du sens : représentations de la maladie et fonction des théories étiologiques profanes / Cancer and end of life : the quest for meaning : representations of the sickness and function of profane etiological theories

Peyrat-Apicella, Delphine 24 November 2017 (has links)
Starting with the distinction made by G. Canguilhem (1966) between the illness of the patient and the illness of the medical doctor, we have considered the narratives, patients’ personal constructions and representations regarding their cancer, co-existing with the medical and scientific theory. These elements are a psychical work of elaboration that can give birth to “a novel of the illness” (Gori, Del Volgo & Poinso, 1994). This quest for meaning, which we consider fundamental to any existence, can be tested when the illness-event creates a trauma in the psyche of the patient, hindering the elaboration of its history. What about this quest as the end of life approaches? The inconceivable of one’s own death (Freud, 1915) ?Our research explores the evolution of the elaborative processes linked to the quest of meaning of the illness-event, of the representations of cancer, of death and the defenses in place to deal with this frightening experience, comparing two groups of patients, respectively in curative and palliative phases of their treatment. Firstly, a quantitative part of our work is objectified statistically with psychometric tools (IPQ-R and DSQ-40), showing differences between the two groups (each group containing 45 patients). The second part is qualitative with clinical and projective data (Rorschach and T.A.T.) issued from 10 patients (5 of each group), showing the psychical processes of patients facing severe somatic illness and its potential lethal evolution. Our research investigates the “novel of the illness” after diagnosis and at the eventual approach of the end of life. Severe illness can freeze the psyche and be traumatic at times, leaving in certain cases elaborative capabilities, despite the social representation of the pathology associated with death. But what when death is no longer a matter of representation and becomes an undeniable fact (when it is impossible of maintaining this reality unconscious) ?

[en] THE PONCELET S PORISM / [pt] O PORISMO DE PONCELET

ERICSON DUARTE DO NASCIMENTO 13 December 2017 (has links)
[en] The purpose of this work is to present and demonstrate the Poncelet s Porism, both the base case for triangles and the general case for any polygon. Being the Poncelet s Porism considered one of the most important theorems of Projective Geometry, we will use concepts of Projective Geometry that are not often familiar to most mathematics teachers in the basic teaching network. The base case for triangles together with the conics can be well explored in high school with the use of geometry software such as Geogebra that was a fundamental tool in the elaboration of the figures used in the demonstrations presented in this essay.

Marques, Clarissa Codá dos Santos Cavalcanti 05 February 2007 (has links)
A camera calibration procedure corresponds to determine the digital geometric and optical characteristics of the camera from a known initial data set. This problem can be divided into three steps: a) acquisition of initial data; b) calibration process itself; and c) optimization. This work presents the development of a calibration tool based on a generic architecture for any calibration approach. For this aim, the presented system allows the personalization of each calibration step. In the proposed tool new calibration procedures are introduced dynamically, allowing a better integration between the modules of the system.

Úprava, ověření, standardizace a příprava pro vydání aktualizované projektivní metody PFT (C-W) pro dospělé / Editing, validation, standardization and preparation for publication of an updated projective method PFT (C-W) for adults

Čáp, David January 2016 (has links)
The Rosenzweig Picture Frustration Study for adults has never had any created norms in terms of Czech population. Since the time of creation its graphical stimulus material became old and nearly unusable. The purpose of this text is to show the method P-F Study to the readers and than to introduce new version for adults PFT (C-W) prepared for publication. There is also a version presented on separate cards, which is part of the new set. The validity and test-retest reliability was verified previously, but reliability was also examined by agreement of two independent evaluators. The standardisation was realized on the sample of 300 persons in age from 18 to 81 years. The new norms were created for factors, categories, S-E patterns and GCR. Also the scoring and compilation of the scoring blank was adapted. Key words: aggression, frustration, projective method, Rosenzweig P-F Study, user's manual

Standardisation of the seven graphology factors scale for application in industry

Elliott, Charmaine Adelina Eliot 06 1900 (has links)
The 7 Graphology Factors Scale is standardised for application in industry. A literature study based on the personality theories of Freud, Jung, Murray and Cattell precedes the empirical research. Graphology is conceptualised, relevant existing graphology models are explored and a graphology theory and method for use in industry proposes that graphology should be regulated and applications classified on the same basis as psychometric tests. The empirical research is based on a sample comprising 360 subjects, stratified according to gender, position and language. The written protocol is subject to analysis of 59 characteristics on the basis of the configuration of the writing. language is irrelevant and the presentation of an intervening stimulus is avoided. Factor analysis results in eight secondary factors. These are I Task Orientation - Directive, II Task Orientation- Conscientious, Ill Emotional Stability, IV Extroversion, V Independence, VI Conceptualisation, VII Openness to Experience and VIII Need for Power. Cronbach's alpha coefficient achieves 0, 61 for Factor I. Stepwise regression analysis provides correlations between factors of the Thematic Apperception, Structured Objective Rorschach and 16 Personality Factor tests with all but Factor Ill, which is hypothesised to be a new construct. Five of the factors are hypothesised to align with the Big Five Personality Model. Thr9e-way analysis of variance, t-tests and the Mantei-Haenszel tests are applied to establish differentiation based on the stratification criteria. Norm tables based on Indigenous, English and Afrikaans first language groups are provided in stens and bands. Conclusions are that graphology has a worthy theoretical heritage and offers benefits to the psychological profession and specifically industry, as part of an assessment strategy. limitations are outlined and recommendations are made for further research. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / D.Litt. et Phil. Existência de conexões versus módulos projetivos

In fact, in this study we found that these notions are equivalent if we consider modules over K-algebras of finite type. We also show that the existence of connections implies the existence of covariant derivative. The main goal of this study is to determine which modules admit connections. We easily verified that the projective modules admit connections. In fact, they form an affine space. But we also display a module that is not projective and has connection. Later, inspired by Swan's theorem, we explore in a straightforward way modules formed by sections of the tangent bundle of some surfaces in 3-dimensional real space. Finally, we study the notion of connection introduced by Alain Connes in modules over K-algebras not necessarily commutative. And we find in that context that the modules that have connection are exactly the projectives modules.
