Chlup, Daniel January 2017 (has links)
Point of this diploma thesis is analyzing of three railroad crossing controlled by institutions of South-Moravian region, which are chosen by author. For analysis were chosen problematic railroad crossing where happened in last five years traffic accidents with consequences of death. Next criterion of choosing was type of security device. Chosen railroads crossing are representing all types of normally used security devices. That is why was chose railroad crossing with only warning crosses, light security device and last one with light security device with barrier beam. Theoretical part aims on: Basic parameters, dividing, numbering, system of function and marking of railroad crossing. In practical part, there are used mathematical calculations for assessment of safety on chosen railroad crossing and for determination of possibilities of averting a collision of both participants. Corrective measures are made for each railroad crossing taking to account it’s financial conditions. For each railroad crossing is made polygon with help of program Virtual Crash 3.

ACTIVATING IMAGINATION FOR SOCIETAL CHANGE: SPECULATIVE REALIST LITERATURE IN THE SECONDARY CLASSROOM

Guadalupe E Ramirez (8882441) 15 June 2020 (has links)
Speculative realism/historical fantasy are labels coined by Stanford University’s Ramon Saldivar. Saldivar describes this genre as “a way of documenting things that have happened, or could happen” (the realist component), but warping realism into science fiction and fantasy, blending and bending the genres (Dickason). In his 2013 article “The Second Elevation of the Novel: Race, Form and the Postrace Aesthetic in Contemporary Narrative,” Ramon Saldivar brings an interesting perspective to how a new generation of authors have taken this genre and exposed utopia as fraud. He argues that as many writers (often members of minorities) seek to challenge the status quo and explore new territories with their prose, a new genre has been born from the utopian and dystopian schools- the genre he coins “speculative realism.” Implicit in his labelling of a new genre is the assumption that existing genres (created and nurtured by the dominant groups in society) are inadequate vehicles for the sort of work these authors seek to do, and in order to make their unique contributions, they have had to become pioneers in the field. Specifically, these authors have focused on utopian and dystopian worlds and have exposed the ruling class ideology hidden in the resolution. This new genre provides perfect material from which to draw texts that encourage students to grapple with the difficult concepts of how society should be organized, and what means might be required to achieve it. This project was developed with high school pedagogical practice in the forefront, therefore texts are chosen based on genre, grade level/interest, and thematic/ideological content. Within each group, the texts are chosen to highlight the deliberate indoctrination present within the current curriculum, and through comparison demonstrate how substituting speculative realist and historical fantasy for dystopian and historical fiction novels both educates and empowers students. In the dystopian genre, the commonly taught Lord of the Flies by William Golding is compared and contrasted with Octavia Butler’s Earthseed series. To explore novels based on history, The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd is contrasted with the historical fantasy The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead.

THE DEMISE OF THE LONE STAR RAIL DISTRICT: A CASE STUDY IN THE FAILURE TO EXPAND PASSENGER RAIL SERVICE IN TEXAS

Andrews, Jr., Robert C., 0000-0002-6058-8868 January 2022 (has links)
While passenger rail service has significantly grown in some parts of the United States, as evidenced by the new Brightline / Virgin Rail USA service in Florida and the expansion of passenger rail service in the State of Virginia, there has been significant resistance to the growth of passenger rail service in Texas, as evidenced by the demise of the Lone Star Rail District (LSRD) in 2016. Why the resistance? This exploratory research provides insights that address that question by identifying the contributing factors that led to the LSRD’s failure. A political economy framework incorporated a stakeholders’ perspective in an analysis of LSRD’s termination. An archival document study was used to identify key stakeholders and to then inform the design of, and the questions used in, an interview study of those key stakeholders. This research identified eight factors that contributed to the demise of the LSRD; 1) prior rail / transit failures in Texas; 2) structure of the Texas legislation; 3) inadequate political support; 4) organizational paralysis; 5) resistance from the Texas Department of Transportation; 6) flawed strategy; 7) disruptive technology; and 8) the Bexar County (Texas) Judge and the president of the Union Pacific Railroad. Although hundreds of individuals were involved during the LSRD’s nineteen-year history, in the end, three key decision makers and one key staff person were attributed with ending the organization’s existence. By identifying and analyzing the constellation of forces that were at play in the Lone Star Rail District, lessons were learned that could be applied (or avoided) across an array of similar rail initiatives, not only in Texas, but throughout the United States. A clear and identifiable political champion; adequate funding; competent project management; a clear project design and budget; a cooperating Class-1 freight railroad partner; adequate property ownership or right-of-way access; and an economically competitive alternative to automated highway vehicle technology; should all be considered necessary elements for the success of future passenger rail expansion projects. / Business Administration/Interdisciplinary

[pt] AS ORIGENS HISTÓRICAS DO DESENVOLVIMENTO: FERROVIAS, ELITES AGRÁRIAS, E CRESCIMENTO ECONÔMICO NO BRASIL / [en] THE HISTORICAL ORIGINS OF DEVELOPMENT: RAILWAYS, AGRARIAN ELITES, AND ECONOMIC GROWTH IN BRAZIL

PEDRO AMERICO DE ALMEIDA FERREIRA 13 December 2021 (has links)
[en] This dissertation explores the impact of transportation infrastructure on economic development and the effects of agrarian elites political power on investments in education. The first chapter documents the impact of the Brazilian railway network on structural transformation between the late nineteenth and middle twentieth century. We exploit variation induced by geographic location, where municipalities near the least-cost routes were more likely to be connected to railway system, to identify the causal effects of railroads on structural transformation. We show that the expansion of the transportation infrastructure shifts the workers from agriculture to manufacturing. We provide evidence that market integration and the adoption of new technologies by manufacturing firms were two important mechanisms that explain the change in the occupational structure of the economy. The second chapter explores the persistence of the impact of Brazil s railway network on long-run economic development between 1950 and 2010. We exploit variation induced by geographic location, where municipalities near the least-cost routes were more likely to be connected to railway system, to identify the causal effects of railroads on economic activity. We show that, despite the decline of the railway network post-1950s, the effect on economic development persisted. Our findings suggest that agglomeration and urbanization were key drivers of economic activity persistence. In the third chapter, we study the relationship between the political power of agrarian elites and the spread of mass schooling in the early 20th century in Brazil. We use a novel dataset on the occupational structure of the voting elites in 1905 and historical censuses to test whether places, where more voters belonged to the agriculture elite, invested less in schooling. We find that municipalities with a higher share of agriculture voters have a lower literacy rate in 1920 and these effects persist until the 1970s. In the long-run, municipalities that had a higher share of agriculture voters have fewer years of schooling and lower income per capita. We provide evidence that the supply of educational inputs is the main mechanism that explains the long-term persistence.

The Union Pacific Railroad and the Mormon Church, 1868-1871: An in Depth Study of the Financial Aspects of Brigham Young's Grading Contract and its Ultimate Settlement

Stevens, Thomas M. 01 January 1972 (has links) (PDF)
In 1868, Brigham Young signed a grading contract with the Union Pacific Railroad to work on the transcontinental line in Utah. He sublet the job to other contractors who completed the work in February 1869. When the project was finished, there was still a great deal of money owed to Brigham Young by the Union Pacific and because of their financial difficulties, they were not able to meet the obligation immediately. To resolved the debt, Young sent Bishop John Sharp and Joseph A. Young to Boston in an effort to effect a settlement with the company. They obtain a partial settlement in August 1869, and the following year John Sharp completed a final settlement with the railroad.Although the negotiations between Young's representatives and the railroad resulted in a compromise settlement, it was equitable and satisfactory to both parties.

[pt] O PROCESSO DE PRECARIZAÇÃO DO TRABALHO: UM ESTUDO SOBRE AS VENDEDORAS AMBULANTES DOS TRENS ADMINISTRADOS PELA SUPERVIA NO RIO DE JANEIRO / [en] THE PRECARIZATION PROCESS OF WORK: A STUDY ABOUT TRAIN HAWKERS ADMINISTERED BY THE COMPANY SUPERVIA DO RIO DE JANEIRO

THAMIRES LACERDA CHAVES BISPO 16 August 2022 (has links)
[en] Research on hawkers is inserted in a wide context determined by the capitalist society in which their daily work can reveal to us the most obscure facet of the process of informalization and precarization of labor that is increasingly present in the contemporary world. By means of several readings, we understand that capitalist exploitation and patriarchal domination are tightly connected and cannot be separated, thus, the analysis process of precarization of labor is related to a gender perspective. To this end, we focused on women working in the extremely competitive hawker’s market of rail transport in the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area. We use the category called territory to seize the power relations and also gender relations produced and reproduced by hawkers in this means of transport. Aiming to achieve the purpose of the research, fieldwork started in January 2022 and ended in May 2022. The fieldwork consisted in observing and participating and interviewing the hawkers in the five principal RMRJ branches of train lines. We did six completed and semi-structured interviews in addition to other hawkers brief inside and outside railroad transportation. We also accessed secondary data from research institutes and we did literature review. All of it gave us theoretical tools and methodology to analyze the experience of women who experience precarity in male majority places.

[pt] TRABALHO E RESISTÊNCIA: EXPERIÊNCIAS DOS TRABALHADORES AMBULANTES NOS TRENS DA REGIÃO METROPOLITANA DO RIO DE JANEIRO / [en] WORK AND RESISTANCE: EXPERIENCES OF THE HAWKERS ON THE TRAINS OF THE RIO DE JANEIRO METROPOLITAN REGION

ANA PAULA FERREIRA JORDAO 06 November 2019 (has links)
[en] This study sought to capture the experiences of hawkers in urban passenger trains that circulate on the Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Region (RJMR), Brazil. This is a deepening of the study that culminated in the master s dissertation entitled A life of wandering: work, precarization and the hawkers of the trains of the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro. Currently, all the hawkers working on the RMRJ trains work in a clandestine way, since their work is not permitted SuperVia, the company who manages the RMRJ railroad, the traveling work in that space. For the elaboration of the present study, the empirical field was entered, in a more systematic way, starting in march of 2018, until the second semester of the same year. The field work consisted of participant observations of the dynamics of the subjects that work in the railroad and in interviews with hawkers on the five main lines of the urban trains of the RMRJ (Deodoro, Santa Cruz, Japeri, Belford Roxo and Saracuruna). Sixteen semi-structured interviews were realized, carried out on the platforms of the railway and also in the composition of the train, with hawkers who worked selling a wide sort of products. Complementary, a variety of sources were used, such as official documents, newspapers and magazines, social medias, pictures and testimonials from hawkers working in other urban spaces. Secondary data from research institutes and bibliographic research were also accessed, as and carried out theoretical-bibliographical review. In this process of research and academic-scientific construction, the work category was deepened, as were the concepts of class and experience. In the discussion and development of the thesis, the process of structural precarization of the current work in the capitalist system and the work experiences of the hawkers in the trains of the RMRJ were also articulated. It emphasized, therefore, the overexploitation of the work to which they are submitted. Another axis of the realized investigation is that of the urban question, both theoretically discussing this category as historically presenting the Rio de Janeiro s and the railroad s space. In this direction, theoretical-empirical discussions on urban space, the right to the city and the appropriation of the city by hawkers as their work locus were developed and articulated. In the perspective of articulating work and social reproduction, elements that surround the reproduction of this fraction of the work force, as well as their families, are presented. Additionally, experiences concerning the work of the hawkers in the railroad space of the RMRJ were presented, identifying its conflicts and contradictions, as well as the possible forms of resistance of these workers. This resistance is expressed as related to survival strategies, identifying the work peculiarities, conditions and way of lives of these workers. The reading key adopted, which comprehends the experience of hawkers as a survival strategy, marked by precarious working and living conditions, allows us to affirm it as a unique form of resistance of these workers on the RMRJ railroad.
