Insbesondere die Reihenfolge und Struktur der gelisteten Ergebnisse (Ranking) spielt, neben dem direkten Volltextzugriff auf die Dokumente, inzwischen eine entscheidende Rolle beim Design von Suchsystemen. Ziel der Forschung/Doktorarbeit von Philip Mayr ist es, zu untersuchen, ob das vorgestellte alternative Re-Rankingverfahren „Bradfordizing“ im Anwendungsbereich bibliographischer Datenbanken operabel ist und voraussichtlich gewinnbringend in Informationssystemen eingesetzt und dem Nutzer angeboten werden kann. Die Evaluation von Bradfordizing zeigt, dass die Dokumente der Kernzone (Kernzeitschriften) für die meisten Testreihen eine signifikant höhere Precision als Dokumente der Zone 2 und Zone 3 (Peripheriezeitschriften) ergeben. Sowohl für Zeitschriften als auch für Monographien kann ein Relevanzvorteil nach Bradfordizing auf einer sehr breiten Basis von Themen und Fragestellungen an zwei unabhängigen Dokumentkorpora empirisch nachgewiesen werden.

Evaluation of Skåne County’s capacity to be self-sufficient in foodstuffproduction: now and for the years 2030 and 2050.

Sweden is becoming increasingly dependent on the import of foodstuffs from a globalfood system that is unsustainable due to its responsibility for environmental degradation and itsdependency on finite resources like fertilizers and fossil fuels. The diminishing ability to be selfsufficientin a time when peak oil, climate change, environmental degradation, exponentialpopulation growth, and a troublesome global economy might reshape the structures of the currentsystems, in a not so distant future, could be a cause for great worry. Skåne County has functioned asa case study to investigate the level of self-sufficiency in foodstuffs at the present time and theprospects for self-sufficiency in the future. Forecasts for the years 2030 and 2050 have been madebased on five different variables: population size, production and consumption, climate change,available agricultural land, and the transition toward a sustainable agricultural system. At thepresent time, with today’s consumption patterns, the foodstuffs that are produced in Skåne Countycan sustain around 78% of the population. For the forecasts, different scenarios have been generatedby adjusting the five variables within a reasonable range. Scenarios are also in the forecasts inwhich suggested proactive implementations to enhance the possibilities for self-sufficiency havebeen included. Due to these proactive implementations and the high degree of uncertainty withinsome variables, the result ranges from a 16.7% self-sufficiency level up to 111.6%. In order to reacha 100 % level of self-sufficiency there are strong indications that this will require structural systemchanges as well as behavioral changes

Edaphic zoning and species-site matching to assist re-vegetation of indigenous species at the Styx Mill Reserve

The Styx Mill Reserve is located in Belfast, Christchurch and is managed by the Christchurch City Council. Who aim to re-establish indigenous vegetation to large proportions of the area. These efforts have been successful in some sections of the Reserve; but large areas of the Reserve remain in grass and other weeds. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the presence of 5 hypothesised edaphic1 zones in a 10 ha study area, with a future aim of matching establishment practices to these edaphic sites. Findings indicated that all zones have significantly different vegetation and soil characteristics. Consequentially methods of native re-vegetation must be different in each zone if successful re-establishment of native species is to occur. Based on confirmed edaphic zones and client input, a site matched management plan and species list for one zone was developed. This aimed to increase the health and survival rates of plantings. Site modification followed techniques used at sites with similar conditions that have had successes in establishing woody vegetation. The effect of hydrogel on heath and survival levels was also trialled. To assess species suitability, five species were selected based on their abilities to survive the site conditions. Due to a combination of frost damage and ungulate browse, only totara survived and demonstrated good health scores. The frost factor is difficult to mitigate, hence species affected severely by frost are not recommended. The browse issue is easier to mitigate and it is felt that the two species heavily browsed, but not frosted are likely to be suitable. This resulted in ribbonwood, totara and kōhūhū being recommended. The time period did not allow assessment of the hydrogel treatment. Insufficient trial numbers exist to continue trials assessing future growth and survival rates over a longer time scale.

Long-Range, Passive Wireless Monitoring Using Energy-Efficient, Electrically-Small Sensor Nodes and Harmonic Radar Interrogator

This dissertation investigates the use of the harmonic radar technique for passive wireless sensing applications. Issues of DC power consumption, high RF activation power, large node size, and short communication range associated with the existing passive wireless sensing technologies are addressed by the development of novel, completely passive, high efficiency, compact 3-D harmonic sensor nodes. The node transceiver employs a passive frequency doubler to return the second harmonic of the interrogation signal, and electrically-small 3-D antennas to achieve the compactness and high efficiency. The developed nodes fit inside a sphere with a diameter < 3 cm and achieve communication range > 60 m using a 43 dBm EIRP interrogator. Effective modulation is demonstrated experimentally using low cost commercial vibration sensors. To address major challenges associated with long-range, embedded, passive wireless sensing including sensor node identification and remote channel calibration, a 3-D dual-channel transceiver is developed. To the best of the author's knowledge, the presented dual-channel transceiver is the first completely passive design with built-in passive remote channel calibration and identification capabilities, and the presented nodes have the best overall performance among previously published designs, in terms of conversion efficiency, communication range, and occupied volume. To reduce the cost and weight and improve the manufacturing process of the proposed nodes, the 3-D digital additive manufacturing and conformal direct printing technologies are employed. The harmonic interrogator antenna design is also an underlying focus of this work. Different interrogator antenna candidates are developed based on different design approaches. The first approach is based on the use of dual-channel antenna array, where one channel is used for transmission and the second channel is used for reception. Two dual-channel harmonic interrogator antennas that consist of 4-element circular patch antenna arrays and 2-element quasi-Yagi dipole antenna arrays are implemented. The second approach employs mechanically reconfigurable antennas to reduce the size and maintain persistent radiation properties over wide frequency bandwidth. Two mechanical reconfiguration methods are developed; the first method is based on the use of Hoberman's planar foldable linkage to vary the operating frequency of planar circular patch antennas and the second mechanical reconfiguration method is based on the use of a rack and pinion mechanism to reconfigure dual-band slot antennas. The third approach employs a single channel multi-octave Vivaldi antenna to provide the capability to interrogate a large number of harmonic tags that are widely spaced in frequency. To improve the antenna radiation performance over a broad frequency range, a new method based on the introduction of a parasitic elliptical patch in the flare aperture is proposed. This method enables gain and bandwidth improvement compared to what has been reported for Vivaldi antennas with a compact size. To provide the interrogator the capability to steer the radiation beam for locating and tracking sensor nodes, a topology to develop a miniature, non-dispersive switchable 4-bit phase shifter is proposed on the basis of composite right/left handed transmission line unit cells.

Hidden intrusions and molybdenite mineralization beneath the Kucing Liar Skarn, Ertsberg-Grasberg Mining District, Papua, Indonesia

The Ertsberg-Grasberg Mining District of Papua, Indonesia (Western New Guinea) hosts the Ertsberg Cu-Au Skarn, the giant Grasberg Porphyry Cu-Au deposit, and several other orebodies. Two 1700-meter-long cores beneath the Kucing Liar ore skarn (KL98-10-22) and the Grasberg Igneous Complex (KL98-10-21) contain high concentrations of vein and disseminated molybdenite. KL98-10-22, the focus of this study, intersects two previously unencountered intrusions, the “Tertiary intrusion Kucing Liar” (Tikl) and “Tertiary Pliocene intrusion” (Tpi). An intense dilatational quartz vein stockwork cuts Tikl and Ekmai Sandstone (Kkes) units, predating Tpi intrusion. Prior to these ultradeep cores, which extend almost 3 km below pre-mining surface, molybdenite was rarely observed in the district. Geochemistry and isotopic data indicate that Tikl and Tpi intrusions originated from the same large magmatic system that emplaced other ore-forming Ertsberg-Grasberg district intrusions. Magma in a lower crustal chamber was recharged at least twice, according to Sr-Nd data. Laser-ablation inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry of magmatic zircons yields 238U-206Pb ages between 3.40 ± 0.12 Ma (Dalam Andesite) and 2.77 ± 0.15 Ma (Ertsberg intrusion), revealing a shorter period of igneous activity than previously measured by K-Ar and Ar-Ar dating. Analyses include composite ages of 3.28 ± 0.08 Ma for Tikl and 3.18 ± 0.11 Ma for Tpi. Inherited zircon cores indicate Precambrian (mostly Proterozoic) basement. Molybdenite veining beneath the Kucing Liar Skarn and Grasberg Igneous Complex postdates stockwork veining and occurred before the 2.99 ± 0.11 Ma Kali dikes. Only one molybdenite vein was observed cutting Tpi. Molybdenites yielded ~3 Ma Re-Os ages and anomalous >4 Ma and <0.5 Ma ages; anomalous ages were not reproducible in follow-up analyses (this study). Smearing deformation of molybdenite (through fault activity) causes crystal strain, likely leading to annealing recrystallization. Recrystallization possibly redistributes daughter-product Os, resulting in anomalous ages from annealed material. Fluids with high Mo/Cu ratios (which were likely supercritical) precipitated late-stage molybdenite deep in the system. These fluids developed through magma chamber crystallization, which concentrated molybdenum in the melt as an incompatible element, and stripping of Cu from the magma chamber during hydrothermal activity. / text

Synthesis and thermoelectric properties of higher manganese silicides for waste heat recovery

Thermoelectric (TE) materials, which can convert temperature gradients directly into electricity and vice versa, have received renewed interest for waste heat recovery and refrigeration applications. Higher manganese silicides (HMS) are promising p-type TE materials due to the abundance of the constituent elements, environmental friendliness, and good chemical stability. The objective of this dissertation is to establish a better understanding of the structure-TE properties relationship of HMS with a complex Nowotny chimney ladder structure. The focus of this work is on the investigations of the phonon dispersion of HMS crystals and the effects of chemical doping and nanostructuring on the TE properties of polycrystalline HMS. HMS crystals have been synthesized by the Bridgeman method for inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the phonon dispersion. In conjunction with density functional theory calculations, the results clearly show the presence of numerous low-lying optical phonon branches, especially an unusually low-energy optical phonon polarization associated with the twisting motions of the Si helical ladders in the Mn chimneys. The obtained phonon dispersion can be used to explain the low and anisotropic thermal conductivity of HMS crystals. (Al,Ge) double doping was found to be effective in modifying the electrical properties of HMS polycrystals. The peak thermoelectric power factor occurs at an optimized hole concentration of 1.8~2.2×10²¹ cm⁻³ at room temperature. On the other hand, Re substitution can suppress the lattice thermal conductivity to approach the calculated minimum value corresponding to the amorphous limit. Meanwhile, the thermoelectric power factor does not markedly change at low Re content of x ≤ 0.04 although it drops considerably with increasing Re content. Hence, the peak ZT has been improved to ~0.6 in both systems. The effects of nanostructuring on the TE properties have been studied in the cold-pressed samples and ball-milled samples. The thermal conductivity was reduced remarkably by decreasing the grain size. It is found that the grain size effects are more significant at low temperature. However, it is difficult to reduce the grain size to less than 50 nm without the formation of impurity phases by ball milling. These facts limit the ZT enhancement of the nanostructured HMS at high temperatures in this study. / text

Relationships of cognitive appraisal

Cognitive appraisal is a pivotal construct that has been identified in determining the stress response and coping response. Researchers have shown specific physiological outcomes of initial cognitive appraisals that are taken more as a threat or a challenge. Cognitive appraisal is known to fluctuate, but little is known about what influences these cognitive re-appraisals. While it has been theorized that changes in physiological arousal might impact cognitive re-appraisals, there is little support for this return pathway. Performance with the stressor has however been indicated as impacting cognitive reappraisals. The studies presented here tested the relationships between cognitive appraisal, cognitive re-appraisal, coping response, performance measures, and changes in physiology. A computerized digit-symbol reaction time task presented to participants as "an IQ test" yielded performance measures, while heart rate and mean arterial blood pressure were recorded, as were measures of participants' cognitive appraisal of the stressor. Participants were both male and female undergraduates with 28 in the first study and 71 in the second study. Results from both studies indicate that the initial cognitive appraisal predicted the coping response as self-reported after the task. Initial cognitive appraisal also predicted more than a third of the variance observed in cognitive re-appraisal. The performance measure, percent correct, predicted an additional 15% of the variance. Neither heart rate nor mean arterial pressure was found to influence the cognitive re-appraisal at the end of the task. The second study also had a subjective performance measure and another cognitive re-appraisal after three minutes of rest. Tests indicated that the subjective percent correct predicted over 15% of the variance of cognitive re-appraisal, subsuming the objective measure of percent correct. The second study also found only one physiological measure, the stress response’s mean arterial pressure, predicted 4% of the variance of the latter cognitive re-appraisal. Results identify the initial appraisal of, and the perception of performance with a stressful task as the primary targets for interventions promoting more effective coping and positive emotions. Future research is discussed that can address the limitations of these studies and investigate other environmental and personal factors that may influence cognitive appraisals. / text

Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka vilken syn som förskollärare har i arbetet med hållbar utveckling, med inriktning på den ekologiska delen där återvinning, återanvändning ingår för att värna om miljön. Studien kommer också belysa hur förskollärare anser att arbetet med hållbar utveckling kan se ut i förskolan samt hur naturen kan användas i detta arbete. Studien kommer att utgå ifrån ett pragmatiskt perspektiv där praktiska handlingar ger barnen en djupare kunskap, men att det också krävs samtal och reflektion för att det ska kunna göras en bedömning.   Metoden som användes i studien var intervjuer med verksamma pedagoger ute i förskolor. Intervjuerna gav djup och detaljrik data till studien. Pedagogerna anser att arbetet med hållbar utveckling sker genom källsortering, skräpplockning, återanvändning av material och sopsortering. Resultatet visar på att samtliga pedagoger anser att arbetet med hållbar utveckling är viktigt för att barnen ska bli miljömedvetna vuxna. Barnens delaktighet handlar till mestadels om att delta i vuxenplanerade aktiviteter. I resultatet framgår det att naturen är ett viktigt verktyg i arbetet med hållbar utveckling för att skapa en miljömedvetenhet hos barnen. Samtliga pedagoger känner att de inte har tillräckligt med kunskap om ämnet och hälften har aldrig deltagit i någon fortbildning. / The purpose of this study is to examine what sight preschool teachers have in the work of sustainable development, focusing on the organic part where recycling and reuse are included to protect the environment. The study will also illuminate how the preschool teachers believe the work with sustainable development might look like in a preschool and how the nature can be used in the work. The study will be based on a pragmatic perspective in which practical actions give children a deeper knowledge, but also requires conversations and reflections for it to be made an assessment The method that has been used in the study was interviews with working teachers out in the preschools. The interviews gave deep and detailed data for the study. The preschool teachers believe that the work with sustainable development is done by sorting, garbage picking, reuse of materials and waste separation. The result shows that all of the preschool teachers think that the work with sustainable development is important for the children to form them to become environmentally aware adults. Children´s participation is mostly about participating in adult planned activities. It shows in the result that the nature is an important tool in the work with sustainable development to create an environmental awareness among the children. All of the preschool teachers feel that they don´t have enough knowledge in the topic and half of them have never participated in any continuing education.
