A comparative assessment of improvements in workflow automation : An analysis based on GitHub Actions in opensource projects

Spångberg, Mattias, Wiklund, Albin January 2023 (has links)
The number of people working together in repositories grows every day. With increasing activity and interaction in a repository the amount of work required to maintain high quality and productivity is a problem. Automating workflows is a solution many developers lean towards in order to handle the problem but the effects of workflow automation is not yet determined enough to say that it actually helps. Based on GitHub’s workflow automation tool, GitHub Actions, this study looks at the effects of workflow automation by analysing the amount and speed of work in repositories on GitHub. To further understand the effects this study looks at the impact of the number of people interacting with a repository on the speed in which developers work. This study performs a statistical analysis on the difference between repositories that use workflow automation and those that do not to further increase knowledge of developers so that they can make informed decisions. Analysis on the effects of workflow automation shows that repositories that use it have an increased amount of committed code, more pull requests, uses issues more, faster pull request closure, and faster issue closure rates. In general repositories using workflow automation have more stars and contributors than those without. Analysis of the impact of the number of contributors show that usage of workflow automation increases with contributors. The study concludes that further research is required to determine if workflow automation is the causing factor of this or the implementation of workflow automation is an effect of increased activity in repositories.

Observational Studies of Software Engineering Using Data from Software Repositories

Delorey, Daniel Pierce 06 March 2007 (has links) (PDF)
Data for empirical studies of software engineering can be difficult to obtain. Extrapolations from small controlled experiments to large development environments are tenuous and observation tends to change the behavior of the subjects. In this thesis we propose the use of data gathered from software repositories in observational studies of software engineering. We present tools we have developed to extract data from CVS repositories and the SourceForge Research Archive. We use these tools to gather data from 9,999 Open Source projects. By analyzing these data we are able to provide insights into the structure of Open Source projects. For example, we find that the vast majority of the projects studied have never had more than three contributors and that the vast majority of authors studied have never contributed to more than one project. However, there are projects that have had up to 120 contributors in a single year and authors who have contributed to more than 20 projects which raises interesting questions about team dynamics in the Open Source community. We also use these data to empirically test the belief that productivity is constant in terms of lines of code per programmer per year regardless of the programming language used. We find that yearly programmer productivity is not constant across programming languages, but rather that developers using higher level languages tend to write fewer lines of code per year than those using lower level languages.

A GitHub-Based Voice Assistant for Software Developers and Teams

Sereesathien, Siriwan 01 June 2021 (has links) (PDF)
Software developers and teams typically rely on source code and tasks management tools for their projects. They tend to depend on different platforms such as GitHub, Azure DevOps, Bitbucket, and GitLab for task-tracking, feature-tracking, and bug-tracking to develop and maintain their software repositories. Individually, developers may lose concentration when having to navigate through numerous screens consisting of various platforms to perform daily tasks. Additionally, while in meetings (non-virtual), teams are often separate from their machines and often would have to rely on pure recollection of the tasks and issues related to their work. This can delay the decision-making process and take away valuable focus hours of developers. Although there is usually one person with their laptop to guide the meeting and has access to the source code management tools, this can take a lot of time as they are not familiar with all the developers’ independent works. Therefore, a new tool needs to be introduced to help accelerate individual and team meetings’ productivity. In this paper, we continued the work on Robin, a voice-assistant built to answer questions regarding GitHub issues and source code management. Robin has the ability to answer questions in addition to completing actions on the behalf of the developer. This thesis presents Robin's abilities, architecture, and implementation while also examining its usability through a user study. Our study suggests that some people love the idea of having a conversational agent for software development. However, a lot more research and iterations must be done to fully make Robin give the user experience we imagined. In this thesis, we were able to set the foundation of this idea and the lessons that we learned.

Examining the Continued Usage of Electronic Knowledge Repositories: An Integrated Model

Lin, Hui 23 April 2008 (has links)
Knowledge has long been recognized as one of the most valuable assets in an organization. Managing and organizing knowledge has become an important corporate strategy for organizations to gain and maintain competitive advantages in the information age. Electronic knowledge repositories (EKRs) have become increasingly popular knowledge sharing tools implemented by organizations to promote knowledge reuse. The goal of this study is to develop and test a research model that explains users' continued usage behavior of EKRs in public accounting firms. Theoretically grounded in the expectation-confirmation model (ECM) and commitment-based model, the research model presented in this study integrates both of these theoretical perspectives to study users' EKR continuance intentions. This study surveyed 230 EKR users from four large public accounting firms. Partial least squares regression was used to test the hypotheses and the explanatory power of the model. Results indicate that perceived usefulness and commitment exhibit a sustained positive influence on continuance intention. Additionally, subjective norms are positively related to calculative commitment and moral commitment. Organizational identification is positively related to affective commitment and moral commitment. Perceived usefulness is positively related to affective commitment and calculative commitment. The model comparisons with the technology acceptance model (TAM) and ECM demonstrated that the integrated model presented in this research explained 1.6% and 0.8% additional variance in continuance intention than both ECM and TAM respectively. Additional multi-group analyses were also conducted to examine the differences between knowledge seekers and contributors and the differences between knowledge novices and experts. This study raises theoretical implications in the area of knowledge management in general and EKRs in particular. It represents one of the first attempts to empirically examine users' continuance intention of knowledge management applications. This study has presented a different perspective on technology acceptance/continued usage by introducing commitment to explain continued IS usage. By integrating commitment and ECM, this study offers a useful framework for future studies on technology use. It demonstrates that both user commitment and perceived usefulness are strong predictors of EKR continuance intention. The results also raise interesting implications for practitioners interested in knowledge management and particularly for public accounting firms how to leverage EKRs to gain a competitive advantage. / Ph. Business Repositories zur informationellen Unterstützung virtueller Unternehmen

Eckstein, Andreas, von Martens, Tobias 15 December 2014 (has links) (PDF)
Business Repository.
