Markov decision processes with imprecise probabilities and relational representations: foundations and algorithms.

Shirota Filho, Ricardo 03 May 2012 (has links)
This work is devoted to the theoretical and algorithmic development of Markov Decision Processes with Imprecise Probabilities and relational representations. In the literature, this configuration is important within artificial intelligence planning, where the use of relational representations allow compact representations and imprecise probabilities result in a more general form of uncertainty. There are three main contributions. First, we present a brief discussion of the foundations of decision making with imprecise probabilities, pointing towards key questions that remain unanswered. These results have direct influence upon the model discussed within this text, that is, Markov Decision Processes with Imprecise Probabilities. Second, we propose three algorithms for Markov Decision Processes with Imprecise Probabilities based on mathematical programming. And third, we develop ideas proposed by Trevizan, Cozman e de Barros (2008) on the use of variants of Real-Time Dynamic Programming to solve problems of probabilistic planning described by an extension of the Probabilistic Planning Domain Definition Language (PPDDL).

Comparação da resistência de protozoários patogênicos - Giardia spp. e Cryptosporidium spp. - e de microrganismos indicadores à desinfecção sequencial cloro-radiação ultravioleta e ozônio-radiação ultravioleta / Comparion of the resistance of pathogenic protozoa - Giardia spp. and Cryptosporidium spp. - and indicators microorganisms to sequential disinfection with chlorine-ultraviolet radiation and ozone-ultraviolet radiation

Medeiros, Raphael Corrêa 30 April 2010 (has links)
O efeito sinérgico, promovido pela desinfecção seqüencial, foi evidenciado em alguns experimentos para C. perfringens e Giardia spp. / The present dissertation reports on the study of the sequential disinfection with chlorine-ultraviolet radiation and ozone-ultraviolet radiation to evaluate the resistance of microorganisms that indicate fecal pollution - E. coli, total coliforms and Clostridium perfringens - and compare it to the resistance of pathogenic protozoa: Giardia spp. and Cryptosporidium spp.. Firstly, the UASB reactor, whose effluent was utilized in this study, was monitored. Then the behavior of the residual species of chlorine in the sanitary sewage was verified and a study of the indicating parameters (pH, oxi-reduction potential and conductivity) for the breakpoint was conducted. Chlorine, ozone and ultraviolet radiation were used separately and sequentially in the disinfection. Tests performed with ozone promoted removal of COD, solids and absorbance values of 254 nm, differently from chlorine. The order of resistance to disinfection was: E. coli < total coliforms < Clostridium perfringens < protozoa. There was a correlation in some tests between spore-forming bacterium Clostridium perfringens and Giardia spp.. The synergic effect caused by the sequential disinfection was observed in some experiments for C. perfringens and Giardia spp.

The importance of Field-Programmable Gate Arrays as compute accelerators has dramatically increased during the last couple of yers. Many companies such as Amazon, IBM and Microsoft included FPGAs in their data centers aiming to accelerate their search engines. In the center of those applications are many machine learning algorithms, such as Support Vector Machines (SVMs). For FPGAs to thrive in this new role, the effective usage of FPGA resources is required. The project?s main goal is the parallel FPGA implementation of both the feed-forward phase of a Support Vector Machine as well as its training phase. The feed-forward phase (inference) is implemented using the polynomial kernel in a highly parallel way in order to obtain maximum throughput at the cost of some extra area. Moreover, the inference implementation is capable of computing both classification and regression using a single hardware. The training phase of the SVM is implemented using Sequential Minimal Optimization (SMO), which enables the resolution of a complex convex optimization problem using simple steps. The SMO implementation is also highly parallel and uses some acceleration techniques, such as the error cache. Moreover, the Hardware Friendly Kernel (HFK) is used in order to reduce the kernel?s area, enabling the increase in the number of kernels per area. After the parallel implementation in hardware, the SVM is validated by simulation. Finally, analysis associated with the temporal performance of the proposed structure, as well as analysis associated with FPGA?s area usage are performed.

Effective Characterization of Sequence Data through Frequent Episodes

Ibrahim, A January 2015 (has links) (PDF)
Pattern discovery is an important area of data mining referring to a class of techniques designed for the extraction of interesting patterns from the data. A pattern is some kind of a local structure that captures correlations and dependencies present in the elements of the data. In general, pattern discovery is about finding all patterns of `interest' in the data and a popular measure of interestingness for a pattern is its frequency of occurrence in the data. Thus the problem of frequent pattern discovery is to find all patterns in the data whose frequency of occurrence exceeds some user defined threshold. However, frequency of a pattern is not the only measure for finding patterns of interest and there also exist other measures and techniques for finding interesting patterns. This thesis is concerned with efficient discovery of inherent patterns from long sequence (or temporally ordered) data. Mining of such sequentially ordered data is called temporal data mining and the temporal patterns that are discovered from large sequential data are called episodes. More specifically, this thesis explores efficient methods for finding small and relevant subsets of episodes from sequence data that best characterize the data. The thesis also discusses methods for comparing datasets, based on comparing the sets of patterns representing the datasets. The data in a frequent episode discovery framework is abstractly viewed as a single long sequence of events. Here, the event is a tuple, (Ei; ti), where Ei is referred to as an event-type (taking values from a finite alphabet set) and ti is the time of occurrence. The events are ordered in the non-decreasing order of the time of occurrence. The pattern of interest in such a sequence is called an episode, which is a collection of event-types with a partial order defined over it. In this thesis, the focus is on a special type of episode called serial episode, where there is a total order defined among the collection of event-types representing the episode. The occurrence of an episode is essentially a subset of events from the data whose event-types match the set of eventtypes associated with the episode and the order in which they occur conforms to the underlying partial order of the episode. The frequency of an episode is some measure of how often it occurs in the event stream. Many different notions of frequency have been defined in literature. Given a frequency definition, the goal of frequent episode discovery is to unearth all episodes which have a frequency greater than a user-defined threshold. The size of an episode is the number of event-types in the episode. An episode β is called a subepisode of another episode β, if the collection of event-types of β is a subset of the corresponding collection of α and the event-types of β satisfy the same partial order relationships present among the corresponding event-types of α. The set of all episodes can be arranged in a partial order lattice, where each level i contains episodes of size i and the partial order is the subepisode relationship. In general, there are two approaches for mining frequent episodes, based on the way one traverses this lattice. The first approach is to traverse this lattice in a breadth-first manner, and is called the Apriori approach. The other approach is the Pattern growth approach, where the lattice is traversed in a depth-first manner. There exist different frequency notions for episodes, and many Apriori based algorithms have been proposed for mining frequent episodes under the different frequencies. However there do not exist Pattern-growth based methods for many of the frequency notions. The first part of the thesis proposes new Pattern-growth methods for discovering frequent serial episodes under two frequency notions called the non-overlapped frequency and the total frequency. Special cases, where certain additional conditions, called the span and gap constraints, are imposed on the occurrences of the episodes are also considered. The proposed methods, in general, consist of two steps: the candidate generation step and the counting step. The candidate generation step involves finding potential frequent episodes. This is done by following the general Pattern growth approach for finding the candidates, which is the depth-first traversal of the lattice of all episodes. The second step, which is the counting step, involves counting the frequencies of the episodes. The thesis presents efficient methods for counting the occurrences of serial episodes using occurrence windows of subepisodes for both the non-overlapped and total frequency. The relative advantages of Pattern-growth approaches over Apriori approaches are also discussed. Through detailed simulation results, the effectiveness of this approach on a host of synthetic and real data sets is shown. It is shown that the proposed methods are highly scalable and efficient in runtime as compared to the existing Apriori approaches. One of the main issues in frequent pattern mining is the huge number of frequent patterns, returned by the discovery methods, irrespective of the approach taken to solve the problems. The second part of this thesis, addresses this issue and discusses methods of selecting a small subset of relevant episodes from event sequences. There have been a few approaches, discussed in the literature, for finding a small subset of patterns. One set of methods are information theory based methods, where patterns that provide maximum information are searched for. Another approach is the Minimum Description Length (MDL) principle based summarization schemes. Here the data is encoded using a subset of patterns (which forms the model for the data) and its occurrences. The subset of patterns that has the maximum efficiency in encoding the data is the best representative model for the data. The MDL principle takes into account both the encoding efficiency of the model as well as model complexity. A method, called Constrained Serial episode Coding(CSC), is proposed based on the MDL principle, which returns a highly relevant, non-redundant and small subset of serial episodes. This also includes an encoding scheme, where the model representation and the encoding of the data are efficient. An interesting feature of this algorithm for isolating a small set of relevant episodes is that it does not need a user-specified threshold on frequency. The effectiveness of this method is shown on two types of data. The first is data obtained from a detailed simulator for a reconfigurable coupled conveyor system. The conveyor system consists of different intersecting paths and packages flow through such a network. Mining of such data can allow one to unearth the main paths of package ows which can be useful in remote monitoring and visualization of the system. On this data, it is shown that the proposed method is able to return highly consistent sub paths, in the form of serial episodes, with great encoding efficiency as compared to other known related sequence summarization schemes, like SQS and GoKrimp. The second type of data consists of a collection of multi-class sequence datasets. It is shown that the selected episodes from the proposed method form good features in classi cation. The proposed method is compared with SQS and GoKrimp, and it is shown that the episodes selected by this method help in achieving better classification results as compared to other methods. The third and nal part of the thesis discusses methods for comparing sets of patterns representing different datasets. There are many instances when one is interested in comparing datasets. For example, in streaming data, one is interested in knowing whether the characteristics of the data are the same or have changed significantly. In other cases, one may simply like to compare two datasets and quantify the degree of similarity between them. Often, data are characterized by a set of patterns as described above. Comparing sets of patterns representing datasets gives information about the similarity/dissimilarity between the datasets. However not many measures exist for comparing sets of patterns. This thesis proposes a similarity measure for comparing sets of patterns which in turn aids in comparison of di erent datasets. First, a kernel for comparing two patterns, called the Pattern Kernel, is proposed. This kernel is proposed for three types of patterns: serial episodes, sequential patterns and itemsets. Using this kernel, a Pattern Set Kernel is proposed for comparing different sets of patterns. The effectiveness of this kernel is shown in classification and change detection. The thesis concludes with a summary of the main contributions and some suggestions for extending the work presented here.

In soils with a predominance of low activity clays and oxides in their mineral fraction, the P fixation through the processes of adsorption and precipitation makes phosphorus nutrition a limiting factor for production of most cultivable species. The anion citrate derived from citric acid dissociation of the soil has high metal complexing power. Furthermore, its negative charge ensures an affinity with the positive charges of the oxides in the soil, competing with phosphate for the same binding sites. In order to verify the potential of citric acid to increase the bioavailability for maize and to modify the forms of inorganic P in the soil, there had been tested the combination doses of 0, 45, 90 and 180 mg dm-3 of P in a Typic Quartzipsamment soil and 0; 100, 200 and 400 mg dm-3 of P in a Typic Hapludox soil, with doses of 0, 1, 2 and 4 kg ha-1 of citric acid in experiments conducted in pots under greenhouse conditions. In Typic Quartzipsamment soil, 119 mg dm-3 of P and an equivalent to 0.8 kg ha-1 of citric acid gave maximum growth of maize crops. In the Typic Hapludox soil, the estimated dose was 96 mg dm-3 of P and equivalent to 2.0 kg ha-1 of citric acid. The plant response to the application of citric acid was due to solubilization of less labile forms increasing the more labile forms of inorganic P in soil. The phosphorus content in the plant and those extracted by Mehlich-1 and Anion Exchange Resin were not correlated to the addition of citric acid in the Typic Hapludox soil.

This study evaluated the performance of two sets of upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) installed in series. The sets I and II were composed of two UASB reactors in series with volumes of 908 and 350 L and 908 L and 188, respectively. In set II was conducted after the treatment of the effluent in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) with continuous flux, with a volume of 3000 L. The volumetric organic loads (VOC) applied to the first reactor of the sets I and II ranged from 8.36 to 9.95 g total COD (L d) -1 and 7.83 to 11.6 g total COD (L d) -1, respectively. The average removal efficiencies of total COD, Kjeldahl nitrogen (NK), total phosphorus (total P) were high and ranged from 95 to 97% and 97 to 99%, 64 to 67% and 53 to 69% and 80 to 87% and 71 to 89% in clusters I and II, respectively. The efficiencies were also high for Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn in clusters I and II, and ranged from 80 to 91% and 63 to 80%, 59 to 80% and 51 to 72% from 89 to 97 and 81% to 98%, 87 to 98% and 91 to 99%, respectively. We carried out the swing of maize in the 2009 off-season and 2009/2010 season, both in no-tillage and conventional sistems for making silage. The pH values observed in the silage did not differ significantly between treatments in both seasons of swing and in the sistems of tillage and no-tillage. The fertilization of corn for silage making, with raw pig manure with waste treated in anaerobic system and the waste from the post-treatment compared to mineral fertilization, results showed no significant difference in silage in most parameters. The reuse of treated effluent and raw manure, did not promote changes in the nutrition of corn but the application of treated effluent increased concentrations of N readily available for plants in soil. Even in much larger doses applied compared to the raw waste, the treated effluent, promoted soil contamination by total coliforms and thermotolerant lower

The improvement in the quality of the national public education is something urgent in our country. With the purpose of investigating the way teaching sequences in curriculum progression develop the language skills in teaching and learning Portuguese in the Ensino Fundamental – Anos Finais -; with works concerning genres of sequential art-; this essay developed a curriculum progression for students from state of São Paulo public school. The whole theory was based on the assumptions of Bakhtin (2006 - 2009), Bronckart (2003 - 2006), Schneuwly and Dolz (2004), basing the organization of teaching sequences with textual genres from narration groups, on the perspective of research - actions (THIOLLENT, 2009). Mobilizing the teaching skills to promote the learning of the language, the research carried out interventions together with the students which conceived written textual productions analyzed as resultant data. The results obtained through the teaching project verified that the work focusing on the language skills identified learning problems and heads the teaching planning with the purpose of overcoming the difficulties detected. The survey validates didactically the procedures used, justifying the proposal of curriculum progression as a way to ensure students` learning at the end of cycle of Ensino Fundamental. This essay is part of the Post Graduation Requirements Program Professional Master Degree for the Basic Education, for obtaining the master´s title, having been prepared a product addressed to the Portuguese teachers that is available as a proposal of work, consisting in a Pedagogical Notebook. This product is also one of the requirements of this program of Post Graduation, inseparable from the dissertation thesis, where the theory is based on.

No. of bitstreams: 1 JeanPD_TESE.pdf: 2551926 bytes, checksum: 0cea6096dad85829234a17d89574bd1e (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-07-15 / This work describes the study, the analysis, the project methodology and the constructive details of a high frequency DC/AC resonant series converter using sequential commutation techniques for the excitation of an inductive coupled thermal plasma torch. The aim of this thesis is to show the new modulation technique potentialities and to present a technological option for the high-frequency electronic power converters development. The resonant converter operates at 50 kW output power under a 400 kHz frequency and it is constituted by inverter cells using ultra-fast IGBT devices. In order to minimize the turn-off losses, the inverter cells operates in a ZVS mode referred by a modified PLL loop that maintains this condition stable, despite the load variations. The sequential pulse gating command strategy used it allows to operate the IGBT devices on its maximum power limits using the derating and destressing current scheme, as well as it propitiates a frequency multiplication of the inverters set. The output converter is connected to a series resonant circuit constituted by the applicator ICTP torch, a compensation capacitor and an impedance matching RF transformer. At the final, are presented the experimental results and the many tests achieved in laboratory as form to validate the proposed new technique / Este trabalho descreve o estudo, a an?lise, a metodologia de projeto e os detalhes de constru??o de um conversor ressonante CC/CA de alta freq??ncia usando t?cnicas de comuta??o seq?encial (sequential pulse gating), para a excita??o de uma tocha indutiva a plasma t?rmico.
