Historically, African American male students have been disproportionately overrepresented in special education under the eligibility categories emotional disturbance, and behavior disorders. Additionally, African American male students with disabilities have consistently underperformed academically. If a student does not perceive that the teacher cares for him, it may be more difficult for a teacher to be successful in engaging the student in the learning experience. The literature indicates that care is a basic need that is grounded in relationships. In schools, those relationships are based on the interaction between the student and teacher. There is a lack of data that specifically addresses the care of African American male students with special needs in nonpublic-school settings. This qualitative study utilized interviewing as a methodology to better understand how the care of a teacher supported the educational experience of African American males for the purpose of informing teachers and leaders in how to work with this specific population of students by addressing the following research questions: (a) How do African American male secondary school students with special needs define care? (b) To what extent do African American male secondary school students with special needs’ perceptions of teacher care affect their educational experiences? (c) Based on African American male secondary school students' with special needs perceptions of teacher care, how are the components of the ethic of care demonstrated in the classroom by the teacher? (d) How are the three suppositions of culturally relevant pedagogy demonstrated by the classroom teacher, according to the perceptions of African American male secondary school students with special needs?

No / Extrusion is one of the major methods for processing polymeric materials and the thermal homogeneity of the process output is a major concern for manufacture of high quality extruded products. Therefore, accurate process thermal monitoring and control are important for product quality control. However, most industrial extruders use single point thermocouples for the temperature monitoring/control although their measurements are highly affected by the barrel metal wall temperature. Currently, no industrially established thermal profile measurement technique is available. Furthermore, it has been shown that the melt temperature changes considerably with the die radial position and hence point/bulk measurements are not sufficient for monitoring and control of the temperature across the melt flow. The majority of process thermal control methods are based on linear models which are not capable of dealing with process nonlinearities. In this work, the die melt temperature profile of a single screw extruder was monitored by a thermocouple mesh technique. The data obtained was used to develop a novel approach of modelling the extruder die melt temperature profile under dynamic conditions (i.e. for predicting the die melt temperature profile in real-time). These newly proposed models were in good agreement with the measured unseen data. They were then used to explore the effects of process settings, material and screw geometry on the die melt temperature profile. The results showed that the process thermal homogeneity was affected in a complex manner by changing the process settings, screw geometry and material. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Social Exchange Theory in the Context of X (Twitter) and Facebook Social Media Platforms with a Focus on Privacy Concerns among Saudi StudentsAlqahtani, Sameer Mohammed S. 12 1900 (has links)
The current research examines the use of social media and its security settings using the Social Exchange Theory (SET) within a Saudi student environment. This research includes an introduction, literature review, methodology, results, and conclusion with the results section presenting the findings from the three essays. The first essay employs the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) methodology of SET. PRISMA's systematic and exhaustive approach to literature evaluation increases the likelihood of obtaining high-quality, reproducible findings. In the second essay, which focuses on awareness of X's (Twitter) security settings, a quantitative research approach was utilized. A sample of former and current Saudi students (graduate and undergraduate) at the University of North Texas participated in the investigation. This research provides an empirical examination of the use of X (Twitter) and its security features within this community by employing statistical analysis of the data from respondents. Likewise, the same sample of Saudi students from the University of North Texas was used for the third essay in which the use of Facebook's security settings was examined. Having a consistent sample across both studies enables a comparison and a greater understanding of the security awareness and practices of this group across various social media platforms. The findings across the different studies extend our understanding of the role of culture in privacy and security concerns related to social media.

A behavioral analysis of two spaces in Kansas State University's Hale Library based on psychologist Roger Barker's behavior setting theoryManandhar, Sachit January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Architecture / David Seamon / This thesis uses behavioral mapping to analyze two contrasting spaces in Kansas State University’s Hale Library. One of the spaces is meant for computer use; and the other for general library use, including study-group work. The conceptual approach chosen to describe and analyze these two library spaces is the behavior-setting theory developed by psychologist Roger Barker, who defines behavior settings as independent units of space, with temporal and spatial boundaries, that have “great coercive power over the behaviors that occur within them” (Barker, 1968, p. 17). The behavioral observations for the two Hale Library spaces were analyzed and compared with findings from other studies of library usage and behaviors.
In the first chapter of the thesis, I introduce my study topic and discuss recent developments in libraries. In the second chapter, I provide a broad overview of library history and library use. I also overview behavior-setting theory and present examples of research on behavior settings and libraries. In the third chapter, I discuss research methods for this thesis, starting with how library spaces can be described as behavior settings. I then discuss specific methodological procedures involved in the behavioral study of activities in the two library spaces. In the fourth chapter, I discuss the two spaces studied in Hale Library, first, describing their physical features and then discussing their behavior-setting attributes. In the fifth chapter, I present my behavioral observations and compare and contrast the two Hale Library spaces in terms of user behaviors and as behavior settings. In the sixth and final chapter of this thesis, I compare my research results with other library research and offer my speculative ideas on the future of the academic library.
The overarching theme of this thesis is evaluating how recent digital technologies have affected libraries, and how traditional library spaces and spaces designated for digital technology can be integrated in future libraries.

Although Shakespeare deliberately downplays characterization in his moonlit dream fantasy, both Britten and Siegmeister exploit this dramatic element as the basis of their opera settings of the play. Through the operas, the shallow characters take on new dimensions, creating musical experiences existing quite independently of Shakespeare, while at the same time retaining the atmosphere of a dream-fantasy. Placing emphases upon varying aspects of the play, the two composers create entirely different revelations from the Bard's dream. This paper presents a study of the way in which drama and characterization are treated in the operas, A Midsummer Night's Dream and Night of the Moonspell.

Chaque année 330 000 (dont 300 000 en Afrique) nouvelles infections à VIH surviennent chez les moins de quinze ans – majoritairement par un mécanisme de transmission verticale d’une mère infectée à son enfant. Pourtant, des interventions efficaces pour réduire la transmission mère-enfant (TME) existent mais ne sont pas toujours disponibles en pratique de routine pour les femmes qui en ont besoin. L’agenda international en cours vise une élimination de l’infection pédiatrique de VIH – et le maintien des mères en vie – à l’horizon 2015. A la lumière de la crise économique mondiale, il apparait opportun de pouvoir juger du montant de ressources nécessaires à la réalisation de cet objectif. Ce travail de thèse dresse le panorama du mode de délivrance des interventions pour la prévention de la TME (PTME) et de la prise en charge des enfants infectés par le VIH dans cinq pays à ressources limitées que sont la Chine, la Côte d’Ivoire, la Namibie, le Rwanda et l’Ukraine. Il apporte une estimation de leur coût et renseigne sur leur efficacité et leur caractère abordable. En outre, une estimation du coût de l’implémentation de potentiels scénarios de passage à échelle des interventions est apportée ; la mesure du nombre de cas (et de décès) non évités sur la période de projection permet de se rendre compte du coût de l’inaction. Enfin, sont discutés deux obstacles majeurs à la diffusion des services de PTME que sont le contexte politique ambiant et l’organisation de l’offre de soins (contrainte en ressources humaines qualifiées notamment). / A decade into the implementation of prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission (PMTCT) programs, countries are making impressive progress towards fulfilling global commitments and achieving global goals. However, achieving a generation free from HIV will entail sustained effort and commitment in the coming years and estimating the cost of this work is fundamental. In light of the global economic downturn, reliable and up-to-date information on the costs of the dedicated services is needed to estimate the amount of additional resources required to scale up those services within the context of the Millennium Development Goals, and to assist resource-limited countries, external funders and multilateral agencies in planning, identify cost drivers and areas of potential savings. This work pursued the aims (1) to produce a reliable estimation of the costs associated with PMTCT services in five low- and middle-income countries, and (2) to ascertain the range and median unit costs needed for scaling up these services across a prevention, treatment and care continuum. Countries were selected given three key criteria related to their economic level and health spending, the national HIV epidemic status and typology, and the coverage of their maternal, neonatal and child health (MNCH) and PMTCT programs. Data were collected in Cote d’Ivoire, China, Namibia, Rwanda, and Ukraine using a health-care provider perspective from October 2009 to April 2010. In-country samples were designed to reflect publicly funded MNCH facilities that were delivering a define range of PMTCT and pediatric HIV services. The package includes HIV testing and counseling, male partner testing, CD4 testing, antiretroviral prophylaxis provision, community-based activities, HIV-exposed infant prophylaxis, and 2-year post-partum family planning. Additional information on prices and volume of services was collected from national government bodies, international donor partners, and non-governmental organizations. Cost data were then analyzed using a bottom-up approach of "micro-costing" where costs are calculated by identifying the actual resources used for each patient. Primary outcomes are costs per specific end-users and nation-wide total program costs, subdivided by major cost categories. After that, we simulated the expected costs over time according to a scale-up analysis estimating the costs needed to increase service coverage under various scenarios of coverage and antiretroviral protocols. These scenarios are incremental in their content: each subsequent scenario adds components and costs to the previous one. Future costs are discounted at a 3% rate. The affordability of each scenario (compared to the previous one) was concomitantly examined through the generation of incremental cost effectiveness ratios. The cost of inaction, measured in both terms of cases non-averted and deaths non-avoided throughout the scaling-up period, was ultimately assessed.

Many people remember Oscar Pistorius as the handicapped athlete given the opportunity to compete with non-handicapped racers. Thanks to his results, diligence and perseverance, he a model in society. His successful sports career was interrupted by a case that awoke the emotions of both foreign media and the Czech Republic. Pistorius shot his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in a house in Pretoria, South Africa. From a celebrated athlete who served as an example to others, in one day he became a man suspected of murdering his partner. Pistorius can be called a fallen sports hero who experienced great sports achievements and fame in his life, as well as police, court and prison investigations. With all this, pressure was exerted on him by the media that reported on the subject. This thesis intends to map the media image of Oscar Pistorius in selected online news servers iSport.cz and iDnes.cz, and to answer the question of how his representation in the media gradually changed during individual periods. The analysis should also demonstrate how the Pistorius' image changed after being found guilty. L'estimation de la pose humaine et la reconnaissance des activités humaines sont des étapes importantes dans de nombreuses applications comme la robotique, la surveillance et la sécurité, etc. Actuellement abordées dans le domaine, ces tâches ne sont toujours pas résolues dans des environnements non-coopératifs particulièrement. Ces tâches admettent de divers défis comme l'occlusion, les variations des vêtements, etc. Les méthodes qui exploitent des images de profondeur ont l’avantage concernant les défis liés à l'arrière-plan et à l'apparence, pourtant, l’application est limitée pour des raisons matérielles. Dans un premier temps, nous nous sommes concentrés sur la reconnaissance des actions complexes depuis des vidéos. Pour ceci, nous avons introduit une représentation spatio-temporelle indépendante du point de vue. Plus précisément, nous avons capturé le mouvement de la personne en utilisant un capteur de profondeur et l'avons encodé en 3D pour le représenter. Un descripteur 3D a ensuite été utilisé pour la classification des séquences avec la méthodologie bag-of-words. Pour la deuxième partie, notre objectif était l'estimation de pose articulée, qui est souvent une étape intermédiaire pour la reconnaissance de l'activité. Notre motivation était d'incorporer des informations à partir de capteurs multiples et de les fusionner pour surmonter le problème de l'auto-occlusion. Ainsi, nous avons proposé un modèle de flexible mixtures-of-parts multi-vues inspiré par la méthodologie classique de structure pictural. Nous avons démontré que les contraintes géométriques et les paramètres de cohérence d'apparence sont efficaces pour renforcer la cohérence entre les points de vue, aussi que les paramètres classiques. Finalement, nous avons évalué ces nouvelles méthodes sur des datasets publics, qui vérifie que l'utilisation de représentations indépendantes de la vue et l'intégration d'informations à partir de points de vue multiples améliore la performance pour les tâches ciblées dans le cadre de cette manuscrit. / Estimating human pose and recognizing human activities are important steps in many applications, such as human computer interfaces (HCI), health care, smart conferencing, robotics, security surveillance etc. Despite the ongoing effort in the domain, these tasks remained unsolved in unconstrained and non cooperative environments in particular. Pose estimation and activity recognition face many challenges under these conditions such as occlusion or self occlusion, variations in clothing, background clutter, deformable nature of human body and diversity of human behaviors during activities. Using depth imagery has been a popular solution to address appearance and background related challenges, but it has restricted application area due to its hardware limitations and fails to handle remaining problems. Specifically, we considered action recognition scenarios where the position of the recording device is not fixed, and consequently require a method which is not affected by the viewpoint. As a second prob- lem, we tackled the human pose estimation task in particular settings where multiple visual sensors are available and allowed to collaborate. In this thesis, we addressed these two related problems separately. In the first part, we focused on indoor action recognition from videos and we consider complex ac- tivities. To this end, we explored several methodologies and eventually introduced a 3D spatio-temporal representation for a video sequence that is viewpoint independent. More specifically, we captured the movement of the person over time using depth sensor and we encoded it in 3D to represent the performed action with a single structure. A 3D feature descriptor was employed afterwards to build a codebook and classify the actions with the bag-of-words approach. As for the second part, we concentrated on articulated pose estimation, which is often an intermediate step for activity recognition. Our motivation was to incorporate information from multiple sources and views and fuse them early in the pipeline to overcome the problem of self-occlusion, and eventually obtain robust estimations. To achieve this, we proposed a multi-view flexible mixture of parts model inspired by the classical pictorial structures methodology. In addition to the single-view appearance of the human body and its kinematic priors, we demonstrated that geometrical constraints and appearance- consistency parameters are effective for boosting the coherence between the viewpoints in a multi-view setting. Both methods that we proposed was evaluated on public benchmarks and showed that the use of view-independent representations and integrating information from multiple viewpoints improves the performance of action recognition and pose estimation tasks, respectively.
