"It would have been difficult if you had gone to the extreme" : A qualitative study on how smartwatch interfaces can be designed to be experienced more useful.

Jansson, Wilma, Jägerklou, Wilma January 2022 (has links)
This study examined how an interface for smartwatches can be designed to be perceived as useful and reduce cognitive load during physical activity. Smartwatch screens have other demands on the interface and face several challenges regarding how information can be presented. In addition to this, smartwatches are often used in physical activity, which places high demands on user's attention. To maintain high-quality training, the cognitive load should be reduced. To investigate this, cognitive load theory has been applied to optimize the capacity of the working memory. The study looked at people in their 20s. Qualitative data collection was done through a user test and semi-structured interviews. The user test was done on a stationary bike, the participants performed several tasks on the smartwatch. The participants rode a stationary bicycle while performing tasks on a smartwatch, followed by semistructured interviews. The results were analyzed by thematization and compared with previous studies. Based on the most common results, eight design proposals were created. The results showed that by eliminating unnecessary information, the interface can reduce cognitive load and increase usability. A consistent interface could minimize the number of errors and make it easier for the user to correct errors. An application of the developed design proposals may minimize the external load when interacting with the smartwatch interface during physical activity. This can support users can focus on training and experience the watch as more useful.

Smartwatches and cycling - A practical adaptation to place-specific computing

Tingbacke, Johan January 2015 (has links)
This paper explores the possibilities concerning the use of smartwatches for practical use when cycling in the city of today. What is explored specifically is how place-specific information can be displayed in the user interface of the smartwatch in the best way possible, while cycling in an urban context. A design proposal is therefore presented as a means to prove the beneficial aspects of place-specific services in the context of cycling. This proposal is based on analysing user feedback upon usability testing performed on the prototypes developed for this purpose.

Krona, Ludwig, Henrysson, Henrysson January 2024 (has links)
This thesis delves into the realm of mobile forensics, specifically focusing on the forensic analysis of location-based data derived from smartwatches and smartphones. With the generation of wearable devices and the increasing reliance on personal electronics, understanding the differences and collaborative potential between these devices is imperative for forensic investigators. The study addresses three key research questions:1) How does geolocation differ between a smartphone and a smartwatch?2) How can information from smartphones and smartwatches collaborate to provide a more comprehensive picture in an investigation?3) Is the GPS/activity data from smartphones reliable evidence in legal cases? The research is positioned against existing studies that explore location-based health data, forensic analysis of IoT devices, and the relevance of smartwatch data in legal proceedings. The methodology used in the study is strategically chosen to offer a comprehensive understanding of the role and challenges associated with smartwatch and smartphone data in forensic contexts, such as experiments and non-structured interviews. By aligning with existing studies and leveraging experimental and interview-based approaches, the research aims to contribute valuable knowledge to the evolving field of mobile forensics. The outcomes of this study are expected to shed light on the use of location-based data in legal investigations, providing guidance for future practices and emphasizing the increasing centrality of these technologies in contemporary society. The results show that there is a difference between the devices, not only between the smartphones and smartwatches but also between the different brands. What significance this plays will be discussed and useful conclusions inferred.

Smartwatch is a new kind of electronic to be worn on the wrist with features similar to those of mobile phones, they are also being used by drivers during their driving task, representing a new form of distraction for drivers and increasing chances of traffic accidents. The goal of this project is to determine the use effect of smartwatches on experienced and novice drivers while driving on a simulated driving task following a vehicle ahead, through the analysis of eye and head movement and driving performance in a driving simulator. Twenty experienced drivers (EXP) and twenty novice drivers (NOV) will follow a car ahead for 2 kilometers in four conditions: follow a car ahead (CAR), follow a car ahead and receive a text message notification on the smartwatch (NOT), follow a car ahead that brakes abruptly (FRE) and follow a car ahead and receive a text message notification on the smartwatch while the car ahead brakes abruptly (FNOT). The gaze, head movement and driving performance data will be subjected to group variance analysis (EXP, NOV), with or without braking (CAR, FRE), with or without smartwatch notification (NOT, FNOT) and by trial (1, 2, 3). The diver’s performance showed to be affected by the car’s ahead braking and by the use of smartwatch during reading tasks. Attentional focus was shifted away from the road to the smartwatch when drivers tried to perform the reading task, thus increasing the chances of an accident. Experienced and novice drivers used different strategies to perform the reading task while driving; experienced drivers were more efficient but both groups shifted their gaze away from the road in detriment of their attention to the traffic, which resulted in risk conditions.

Pokročilé skórování spánkových dat / Advanced scoring of sleep data

Jagošová, Petra January 2021 (has links)
The master´s thesis is focused on advanced scoring of sleep data, which was performed using deep neural network. Heart rate data and the movement information were used for scoring measured using an Apple Watch smartwatch. After appropriate pre-processing, this data serves as input parameters to the designed networks. The goal of the LSTM network was to classify data into either two groups for sleep and wake or into three groups for wake, Non-REM and REM. The best results were achieved by network doing classification of sleep vs. wake using the accelerometer. The statistical evaluation of this best-designed network reached the values of sensitivity 71,06 %, specificity 57,05 %, accuracy 70,01 % and F1 score 81,42 %.

Hodinkohled: Etnografie uživatelské zkušenosti s Apple Watch / A Watch To Watch: Ethnography of User's Experience with Apple Watch

Zavoral, David January 2020 (has links)
This thesis builds upon ethnography of Apple Watch user experience and explores its connections with Apple's different branding strategies such as official website advertisements for Apple Watch Series 4, Supplier Responsibility Progress Report (2019) and Today at Apple sessions held in Apple Stores. I draw on sociomaterial approaches with special emphasis on John Law's (2004) method-assemblage and the feminist critique of ANT managerial vision that allow me to conceptualize corporate practices as means of enacting singular and coherent commercial out-thereness and absences. The goal of this thesis is to explore possible connections between the user's experience and the corporate branding strategies which craft a series of commercial realities in order to translate the needs of other actants and enroll them in its corporate network. This paper also argues that ambivalence is central to this process as corporate branding is being constantly reshaped and reconfigured by both the branding strategy itself and the actants involved. Chapter I provides a semiotic analysis of advertisements inspired by Woolgar's (1990) concept of moral universe. The second chapter follows with examining the Progress Report which provides information on the production processes that are completely absent in exclusively...

Health data sharing and privacy among older people using smartwatches

Apelthun, Henrietta January 2022 (has links)
Smartwatches can collect health data, location data and other sensitive information about users, and privacy concerns arise. This thesis aimed to investigate how older people (50-80 years old) in Sweden behave when it comes to privacy and health data. The data were analyzed according to the privacy paradox, which describes the discrepancy between how people behave and how they intend to behave in relation to risk and trust. The research approach was qualitative, and twelve semi-structured interviews were conducted. The interviews were coded and thematized following the chosen theory. Among the twelve participants in the study, a majority did not see, understand, or behave consciously towards the risks of sharing health data. Instead, trust was related to both the disclosure behavior and the intentional behavior among several of the participants in this study. This study indicates that for some of the participants, there are also other factors that determine their behavior, and the privacy paradox alone is not complete. Four of the findings when it comes to participants' behavior towards their health data and privacy were: trust-based decisions, lack of knowledge, low value of personal data, and value benefits more than privacy. Among several of the participants in this study, when trust towards an actor increase, the participant’s risk awareness decreases. It can be discussed whether the participants in the study value the opportunities more than the risks, and this impacts their behavior. Most of the participants think that sharing location data infringes more on their privacy than sharing health data, and self-education might be a reason the behavior and the level of privacy differ among the participants.

Application development for smartwatches : An investigation in suitable smartwatch applications / Applikationsutveckling för smarta klockor : En undersökning inom lämpliga applikationer för smarta klockor

Isacson, Dan January 2015 (has links)
The smartwatch has been predicted to be the next big thing in the ecosystem of wearable and mobile devices. The success of the smartphone has a lot to do with the support from third party developers and their applications. This support will most likely be of utmost importance if the smartwatch is going to be successful. But what are suitable applications for this type of device? What are people's expectations and opinions on smartwatches? This thesis work delved into these matters with focus on development for the Apple Watch. This was done through an online survey that reached more than 1400 people, through a field study for one person that used the smartwatch as an air-travel tool and finally through a usability test conducted on five people that tried out several applications, most of which were developed for this project. Four different applications were implemented: a timetable application, a museum audio-guide, a game and an airline application. The results indicate that people generally expected the smartwatch to act as an extension for their smartphones and notifications seemed to be an area in which the smartwatch excelled. The results also show that there are many applicable areas the smartwatch can be used for, but that interaction with these should be kept quick and simple. This is extra important given the limited screen-size and special considerations should be taken on what content to display.

See if your dog has been a Good Boy through glanceable feedback : A design research to implement glancable feedback in activity trackers for dogs

Klaar, Sandra, Klasson, Malin January 2021 (has links)
Resultatet är aktivitetsenheten Good Boy. / The purpose of this study is to investigate how glanceable feedback can be implemented in activity units for dogs to create a better user experience and reduce the technological disruption in human-dog communication. Previous studies show that the development of activity units for dogs is far from as successful as activity units for humans (Ramokapane, van der Linden & Zamansky, 2019; Väätäjä et al. 2018; Zamansky et al. 2019). Väätäjä, et al. (2018) have pointed out the importance of the technology behind the activity, such as the mobile phone, unit not coming between the dog owner and the dog. It must not act as a disturbance that distances communication or interaction between dog and human (Väätäjä et al. 2018). This is inevitable in today's activity units for dogs as the user is completely dependent on the mobile phone's associated application (Väätäjä et al. 2018).  The question (How can glanceable feedback be applied in an activity unit for dogs to give the dog owner direct information on the dog's activity?) Investigates how glanceable feedback can be applied in activity units for dogs and avoid that communication between dog and owner is disturbed by technology. The result is the Good Boy activity unit. The unit is equipped with a display and a mechanical wheel that switches between the different categories distance / step, pulse / body temperature, info /contact information and LED/lamp.
