Exploring male disordered eating : a hermeneutic study of men's relationships with food, body and self

Delderfield, Russell January 2016 (has links)
Disordered eating in men is said to be uncommon with men forming less than ten per cent of reported cases. Yet it has been suggested that the number of males with eating disorders is beginning to increase, affecting more men than ever before. This presents problems for healthcare services that have created previous models of support around women. Current research offers pathological and epidemiological data, including information about testing men for eating disorders using male-centred instruments. However, understanding is aetiolated due to a focus on medical accounts of male disordered eating, rather than focusing on the stories that men themselves have to tell. This exploratory qualitative study addresses this problem by focusing on men’s stories of disordered eating. Four men share their accounts of living with an eating disorder and these are analysed using a hermeneutic approach, in order to glean insights into their experiences with food, body and self. These insights include an examination of the meaning of fat male bodies, analysis of the phenomenon of gender ambivalence that prevails in men with disordered eating and the fragmented and colonised nature of the male eating disordered self. These represent an original contribution to understanding as they have not been considered elsewhere in the literature to date. Additionally, an extensive analysis of the male eating disorder literature, use of a hermeneutic methodology and the positioning of male eating disorders within the context of masculinities studies further add to the novel value of this research.

Salvador

The Social Construction and Reciprocity of Resilience: An Empirical Investigation of an Organizational Context

January 2018 (has links)
abstract: This research examines the communicative processes of resilience in the organizational context of public education. The research utilizes one-on-one interviews to elicit descriptions of resilience and well-being and collect stories of success and overcoming challenges. The study purpose is two-fold: (1) to understand the ways in which organizational members construct and enact resilience individually and collectively through their talk and stories, and (2) to extend the communication theory of resilience through an empirical investigation of resilience in an organizational context. An iterative, thematic analysis of interview data revealed that resilience, as lived, is a socially constructed, collective process. Findings show resilience in this context is (1) socially constructed through past and present experiences informing the ways organizational members perceive challenges and opportunities for action, (2) contextual in that most challenges are perceived positively as a way to contribute to individual and organizational goals and as part of a “bigger purpose” to students, (3) interactional in that it is constructed and enacted collaboratively through social processes, (4) reciprocal in that working through challenges leads to experience, confidence, and building a repertoire of opportunities for action that become a shared experience between educators and is further reciprocated with students, and (5) is enacted through positive and growth mindsets. This study offers theoretical contributions by extending the communication theory of resilience and illuminating intersections to sensemaking, flow, and implicit person theory. I offer five primary practical applications, discuss limitations, and present future directions highlighting community development and strengths-based approaches. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Communication 2018

Processos de políticas públicas em educação do campo no Brasil: estudo multicasos à luz da teoria de construção social / Brazilian rural education and public policy processes: multi-case study based on a theory of social construction

Giuliano Alves Borges e Silva 16 June 2016 (has links)
The objective of this research is to identify the main reasons that lead the rural school communities to achieve good performance in education, considered the Basic Education Development Index (IDEB). This study is justified because it takes up the theme of public policies aiming to revitalize the set of rural schools, it is vital for a country still so economically designed for rural production. The method used was prepared by the author, and is called TPCF (Target Population Change Framework), developed from the theory of social construction of Schneider and Ingram (1993). Through qualitative approach pursues to analyze how changes occur in target populations, in this case, thirteen of the best rural schools in Brazil. The results reveal in particular that the influence of policymakers in the generation of positive effects is greater than the initiatives of local actors, however it was found that in all schools with \"good performance\" according to the criteria adopted, was always indispensable mobilization principal, teachers, families, students, and better, from all those, proving the fundamental condition of the school community engagement through adhering practices to reality with the adoption of cultural and educational projects expanded the community, even if those stimuli presented predominantly productivity character. Such circumstances impose a reflection on the future of rural schools as the pedagogical guidelines, that is, the historical model hub replication of land assets, as opposed to libertarian thought, for a society that intends to reduce large socioeconomic distances, as visible in the Brazilian rural areas.

The investigation is instigated by two assumptions: 1) understanding the mainstream media as an institution integrated, and originated, in the capitalist system, it is the focus of complex struggles of/for power to influence the production of meanings and social representations – i.e., its a privileged space for the recognition of (in)existence and (in)visibility of voices, themes and worlds, thus collaborating in the reconstruction of reality; 2) in Brazilian society, transgender people are one of the political/identity groups that, on daily bases, experience social marginalization – structural, many of the transphobic/ cissexists violence they face are the result, and result, from / in the deletion of their voices, historically pathologized/ criminalized by 'official' knowledge (mostly built by medicine and psychological sciences, reproduced in various public and private spaces). Our hypothesis is that the media is, also, space of (re)production of violence and exclusion of transgender people - a hypothesis that at the end we found to be true. Thus, the work has three main objectives: 1) to analyze the discourses produced (jan.2014 - jan.2015) on Aqui PE and Jornal do Commercio (printed versions) about transsexuality(s); 2) through semi-structured interviews with some of those involved in news production (publishers of the analyzed books), provide clues about some of the conceptions of transsexuality circulating in newsroom and newspapers, as well as other variables that condition the construction of news topics; 3) tacking theories derived mainly from Journalism Theories, Critical Discourse Studies and Queer Studies, reflect on the possibilities of discursive change, therefore social changes, about transgenderity and, necessary- simultaneously, cisgenderity.

Gibert, Helene 20 September 2012 (has links)
Beaujolais is one of the best known wine regions in the world : its renown is based on that of Beaujolais nouveau wine, which has an AOC designation, allowing a preview of the vintage. The development of Beaujolais has historically been based on the region of origin but has gradually become focused on this young wine. This has allowed for a rapid expansion of local viticulture throughout the second half of the 20th century, brought about by the actors of the supply chain. However, at the beginning of the 21st century, Beaujolais experienced the full force of the socio-economic crisis affecting viticulture, mainly due to the globalization of production and changing trends for wine consumption. Therefore, local actors are rethinking their development model: in this changing context, how can they sustain the production and economic viability of this wine, as well as the strong local identity and the infrastructure it generates for the region ? There is a specific paradox for Beaujolais: although the name is known all around the world, the geographic location is approximately known or even completely unknown. The strategies that are put in place thus combine competitiveness in the market with an image linked with a local territorial identity and the value of social constructions in « terroirs ». These strategies result in various ways of restructuration : the production area, links with other local areas (vineyards and consumer bases), but also in how the wineries are governed, going from a very segmented vision to a more collective approach, bringing together all the actors from the local area. The systematic approach used in this study provides a global vision of the vineyards of Beaujolais and their development strategies. The current discourse, the social construction of an identity experienced, sold and perceived, as well as the challenges of actors governing the system of viticulture are all at the core of this study. The idea of a « terroir » of viticulture with everything included in this concept is reevaluated, with respect to the different local strategies implemented.

: En kvalitativ studie om hemtjänstpersonals konstruktion av äldre immigranter / May I ask a stupid question - older immigrant, what does it mean : A qualitative study about home care professionals´ social construction of older immigrants

Brito, Idalina, Dreierström, Olivia January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this study was to understand how home care professionals construct older immigrants. The study was conducted by a social constructional perspective. The study consists of focus group interviews with three different home care groups. The data was analysed by using the theoretical concepts Categorizing and Making of the Others. The results of this study shows that the home care professionals are categorizing older immigrants as different from older Swedes, and therefore making older immigrants as the others. Besides mentioned social construction of older immigrants, we found that there were contradictions when the home care professionals made a reasoning that did not make older immigrants as the others. In this case they did not find the category older immigrants meaningful and useful, because they expressed that their needs were no different from elderly people in general.

Spiritual Frameworks in Pediatric Palliative Care: Understanding Parental Decision-making

Davidson, Lindy Grief 06 April 2016 (has links)
Parents of seriously ill children are charged with making complicated medical decisions, and many of those decisions are made during their children’s hospitalizations. As medical staff seek to support parents, it is important for them to understand what resources parents are drawing upon for decision-making. This project explored parental decision-making by examining the following research questions: RQ1: What resources do parents draw upon to make medical decisions for their seriously ill children? RQ2: How do parents enact their spiritual or religious frameworks in clinical settings when faced with medical decisions for their seriously ill children? Methods of research included ethnographic observation of a pediatric palliative care team and semi-structured interviews with twenty parents and grandparents of seriously ill children. Analysis of the interview data brought out three main themes: the role of spirituality for parents of seriously ill children, the ways parents perceive spiritual conversations with hospital personnel, and the role of spirituality for parents making difficult decisions. A case study is presented as an exemplar of complex decision-making, and the author offers her personal narratives of parenting a seriously ill child. The author suggests new directions for practitioners based on a constitutive approach to communication in which practitioners and parents work together to build towards an understanding of the child’s illness. The findings from this study contribute to the current understanding of families with seriously ill children and should shape medical education in a way that will benefit the next generation of professional care providers as they seek to meet the needs of children and their families.

The Impact of working as a bus driver on women‘s health, workplace relationships and family functioning : the experiences of black female bus drivers in Tshwane, South Africa

Komane, Florence Keitumetse January 2013 (has links)
The post-apartheid government of the Republic of South Africa implemented new policies to promote equality in the workplace, in terms of both race and gender. As a result, more women are entering the labour market and working as bus drivers; an environment that is highly dominated by men. However, since occupations are historically sex-segregated, the bus driving industry is dominated by men. This set of circumstances therefore challenge women who choose bus driving as a career, for it is regarded as a male profession. This study focuses on one aspect of public transport in South Africa, with a specific focus on female bus drivers. The aim of the research is to explore the experiences of female bus drivers in Tshwane, South Africa in terms of how they deal with the challenges they are faced within the industry. The primary concern of the study is on the impact of their chosen career on their general well-being which is described as workplace relationships, occupational health and family-work balance. It further looks at the driving forces behind these women‘s choice to join the bus industry. Since women were traditionally based in the private sphere (family), the study then looks at how these women have adjusted to the working environment outside of their homes. Moreover, it looks at the relationships these women have with their managers, colleagues and passengers. A total number of sixteen female bus drivers participated in the study. Findings show that the incorporation of women in the bus driving industry has been a challenging one. It has been challenging especially for women as they are prejudged by the majority of people as being incapable of operating buses and as a result, they are faced with hostility. Some of the factors contributing to hostility towards female bus drivers are cultural beliefs, unemployment, competition and age differences. There are also other factors that influenced a shift over time from a negative perception to a more positive perception of female bus drivers over time such as female drivers‘ abilities and capabilities to drive. Due to the working conditions of bus drivers, female bus drivers reported having psychological, sleeping and muscular-skeletal problems. Additionally, balancing work and family life has proven to be difficult for many female bus drivers. / Dissertation (MSocSci)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / gm2014 / Sociology / unrestricted
