Benchmarking of elite sport systems

Bohlke, Nikolai January 2006 (has links)
The organisation of elite sport systems has been the focus of a great variety of different investigations over the past ten years. In particular, many studies have compared the structure and organisation of different national elite sport systems on the macro and meso levels. A result of the existing investigations is a clear convergence of the service portfolio different elite sport systems offer their athletes and coaches. Despite this current trend to a homogeneous elite sport system design, medal tables of major sport events suggest that some nations are still more successful than others in specific sports. This suggests that more successful sport systems might have found better ways to implement the otherwise similar and conventional support portfolio. However, there is a lack of studies that focus on what practices successful elite sport systems apply in the actual delivery of the support services to their athletes and coaches; in how far these practices are related to the ,success of the sport systems; if these practices look similar across different successful sport systems; and if these practices provide useful lessons for other systems to learn from. The management tool benchmarking appears to be a useful framework to guide such comparisons at the operational level. Thus, this thesis evaluated the applicability of this management concept for furthering understanding of elite sport system management. In order to conduct this evaluation it was decided to analyse the operational processes and structures two successful elite sport systems apply for the delivery of five elements of the elite sport support portfolio. In specific, the investigation focused on the comparison of the design of the squad system, the hierarchy of coaches within the squad system, the organisation of the coach education, as well as the provision of sport science and lifestyle support, which were the Benchmarking Objects of this study. The Swedish athletics and the Norwegian cross-country skiing national team, and the general elite sport support institutions they cooperate with, were chosen as the Benchmarking Subjects, i.e. the comparison partners, for this investigation. This research was based on a series of semi-structured interviews which were conducted with about 50 key pOSition holders such as coaches, athletes, lifestyle support managers, or performance diagnosticians during two study visits to Norway and Sweden. This study concluded that benchmarking can lead to insights into the operational management of successful elite sport systems. It must however also be stressed that benchmarking is not a universal remedy for the problems managers of elite sport systems face today. As this research showed, the two Benchmarking Subjects applied unexpected solutions for the delivery of some of the chosen Benchmarking Objects - and some of these practices appeared to be heavily linked to the organisational and cultural context of the investigated sport systems. Thus, it must be carefully evaluated for each process or structure, which is identified during a bench marking exercise, if it constitutes a transferable best practice which is applicable outside the organisational context of the respective Benchmarking Subject.

Answer Triggering Mechanisms in Neural Reading Comprehension-based Question Answering Systems

Trembczyk, Max January 2019 (has links)
We implement a state-of-the-art question answering system based on Convolutional Neural Networks and Attention Mechanisms and include four different variants of answer triggering that have been discussed in recent literature. The mechanisms are included in different places in the architecture and work with different information and mechanisms. We train, develop and test our models on the popular SQuAD data set for Question Answering based on Reading Comprehension that has in its latest version been equipped with additional non-answerable questions that have to be retrieved by the systems. We test the models against baselines and against each other and provide an extensive evaluation both in a general question answering task and in the explicit performance of the answer triggering mechanisms. We show that the answer triggering mechanisms all clearly improve the model over the baseline without answer triggering by as much as 19.6% to 31.3% depending on the model and the metric. The best performance in general question answering shows a model that we call Candidate:No, that treats the possibility that no answer can be found in the document as just another answer candidate instead of having an additional decision step at some place in the model's architecture as in the other three mechanisms. The performance on detecting the non-answerable questions is very similar in three of the four mechanisms, while one performs notably worse. We give suggestions which approach to use when a more or less conservative approach is desired, and discuss suggestions for future developments.

From the analysis of the trajectories in the Brazilian film market of feature films "Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands," directed by Bruno Barreto and released in 1976, and "Elite Squad 2: The Enemy Within", directed by José Padilha and released in 2010, this thesis discusses how relations between the Brazilian cinema and the federal government between 1975 and 2010, as well as television and other country's audiovisual market agents influenced the trajectory and continuity of production and distribution of these movies in their own country. Using cultural studies as a research method, the work is theoretically grounded in the concept of hybridization, defended by authors like Néstor Canclini and Marshall McLuhan, and seeks to understand how the filmic production encouraged both by Embrafilme in 1970, as the National Cinema Agency (Ancine), in the 2000s, contributed to the inclusion of Brazilian cinema in Pierre Bourdieu called "symbolic goods market," thus shifting the Brazilian cinema from artistic market field and entering a web of complex ramifications involving political, economic and other media in a legitimate player in the sense intended by Vilém Flusser.

Brobakken, Jonas, Martinson, Dag January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of the thesis was to gain a greater understanding of what motivates women to take up a position as a squad commander, soldier, or sailor (GSS) in the Swedish Armed Forces. The study provides a piece of the puzzle on what motivates women to take up employment, which is important as the Armed Forces is facing personnel growth while the agency today does not reach the stated goals in the mentioned personnel category.  In the study, we can see that women take a job as they are primarily looking for a profession that can give them opportunities for self-realization, a connection with a sense of belonging and community. These driving forces have been explained and reported with the help of motivation theories. The characteristic of the study is that women's motivation to take up employment as GSS has not been studied before. As no clear differences between theories and the empirical data of the study have been demonstrated, we see that there are other factors that must be affected if more women are to take a job as GSS.  The Armed Forces, and perhaps also society at large, must highlight the role of the Armed Forces and clarify the possibilities serving within the authority as GSS. Influencing an individual's willingness to take up employment is difficult but disseminating enlightening information about positions to the target group of young women is an important factor that can increase the influx of women into GSS positions. At the same time, we see in the study that it would be beneficial to examine the target group's knowledge regarding professions in the Swedish Armed Forces and then GSS in particular.  Recommendations to the Armed Forces are to study why developed goals are not achieved but even more importantly, review and edit the goals based on the target group's interest to achievable levels, focusing on the conditions of the population. Information activities within the framework of the basic training must continue to be carried out in a coordinated manner. The study shows that these information efforts have a good effect and should be developed as the Swedish Armed Forces is facing a growth where the entire population has a significant role as a recruitment basis to realize this.

Interaktivní editor a prohlížeč animací / Interactive Animation Viewer and Editor

Ducháč, Michal Unknown Date (has links)
Since the introduction of high end graphical workstations, computer animation has quickly replaced the traditional means of animation. Nowadays computer animation has many applications e.g. video games, motion picture industry, media, weather forecasting and many others. This master thesis discusses various techniques used to created animations using computers. Keyframing, is the most common approach in computer animation. Borrowing its name from the concept of traditional hand animation, the workflow process remained the same. Basic principles of animation using key-frames are explained and an Interactive Animation Editor solution based on keyframing is proposed and the implementation of this editor is described. Editor uses the Kochanek-Bartels interpolation of values between each key-frame.

Tideskog, Johan, Lindström, Mikael January 2023 (has links)
The Swedish armed forces (SAF) are growing. To meet the need for a more robust and capable defense force, as described by the proposed strategical military concept, the SAF must steadily increase military personnel volumes. A personnel category that the SAF has had difficulties recruiting are employed soldiers and squad leaders. The study aims to explore what motivates conscripts to choose voluntary employment as professional soldiers and squad leaders within the Swedish Armed Forces after their mandatory military service. The study is a qualitative, inductive study that gathers empirical facts through interviews with recently employed soldiers and a workshop with conscripted soldiers still completing their military service. The study's frame of reference describes how the conscripted soldiers adapt through socialization and form a nascent professional identity. Furthermore, it describes the soldiers' attachment and commitment to their professional role. To further understand the soldiers' motivation, the empirical evidence is viewed through a generational perspective. The results show that how the soldiers experience their mandatory military service constitutes the decisive factor for their choice to continue in the Armed Forces. Conscripts who choose to stay in the Armed Forces have both had a positive affirmation of their professional identity during their military service and have experienced leaders who are strong and positive role models for the profession. Their primary motivations embody expectations of the special characteristics and prerequisites of the military profession as well as the strong sense of cohesion and comradeship that they regard as unique to the military profession. The authors conclude that more of the conscripted soldiers would be motivated to continue if the SAF would adopt a more coherent approach of culture and leadership that does not differentiate between conscripted and contracted soldiers. The authors also conclude that the organizational culture of the SAF need to adapt to the new generation.

The value of vehicle tracking technology in the recovery of stolen motor vehicles

Senekal, Willem Andries 03 1900 (has links)
Text in English / In this study, the research problem sought to explore, identify and acknowledge the value of vehicle tracking technology within the South African Police Service (SAPS). National legislation in the Republic of South Africa allows the SAPS and private organisations, such as Tracker, to create partnerships to successfully combat crime, such as vehicle related crimes. Data was collected by means of a literature study, together with semi-structured interviews that were individually conducted with non-commissioned officers of the SAPS: West Rand Flying Squad. These members are deployed daily, in an operational environment, to deal with the recovery of stolen and robbed motor vehicles; they utilise vehicle tracking technology to fulfil this function. A detailed study of literature relating to national legislation, SAPS directives, media and newspaper reports as well as library resources and international studies was conducted. The research indicates the importance of vehicle tracking technology in assisting specialized units within the SAPS to successfully and efficiently track and locate stolen or robbed motor vehicles. It is evident that the use of this type of technology has become an invaluable tool to the SAPS: West Rand Flying Squad members in their daily duties. Furthermore, members at grassroots level understand and appreciate the assistance and value of technology, especially as the technology enables them to effectively recover stolen or robbed motor vehicles, and to successfully arrest the perpetrators responsible for these thefts. The recommendations made in this study may provide a number of solutions to the South African government, SAPS, insurance industry and the general public, regarding the value of vehicle tracking technology. In addition, the study indicates how this technology can effectively assist in curbing vehicle crimes and the recovery of stolen or robbed motor vehicles; in the process, recovery affects the arrests of criminals, thus saving the economy a significant amount of money due to crimes of this nature. / Police Practice / M.A. (Criminal Justice)

Large-Context Question Answering with Cross-Lingual Transfer

Sagen, Markus January 2021 (has links)
Models based around the transformer architecture have become one of the most prominent for solving a multitude of natural language processing (NLP)tasks since its introduction in 2017. However, much research related to the transformer model has focused primarily on achieving high performance and many problems remain unsolved. Two of the most prominent currently are the lack of high performing non-English pre-trained models, and the limited number of words most trained models can incorporate for their context. Solving these problems would make NLP models more suitable for real-world applications, improving information retrieval, reading comprehension, and more. All previous research has focused on incorporating long-context for English language models. This thesis investigates the cross-lingual transferability between languages when only training for long-context in English. Training long-context models in English only could make long-context in low-resource languages, such as Swedish, more accessible since it is hard to find such data in most languages and costly to train for each language. This could become an efficient method for creating long-context models in other languages without the need for such data in all languages or pre-training from scratch. We extend the models’ context using the training scheme of the Longformer architecture and fine-tune on a question-answering task in several languages. Our evaluation could not satisfactorily confirm nor deny if transferring long-term context is possible for low-resource languages. We believe that using datasets that require long-context reasoning, such as a multilingual TriviaQAdataset, could demonstrate our hypothesis’s validity.
