This bachelor thesis explores what has been said about The Darling Library-project on The City Library of Malmö between 2009-2012. In 2009 The City Library of Malmö came up with a new strategic plan on how to further develop the organization of The City Library called The Darling Library - your life, your dreams, your library. This led to a debate on what the purpose of The City Library of Malmö should be. Should the library be primary about books and literature or should the library act as a meeting place in our multicultural society?This thesis examines different conceptions people have about The City Library of Malmö in newspaper articles published between 2009-2012. To analyze the empirical material, discourse analysis developed by Ernest Laclau and Chantal Mouffe have been used, along with a model developed by Åse Hedemark. The findings shows three different discourses: “The traditional discourse”, where books and literature is the core of the library, “The discourse of the future” where the physical library should work as a meeting place filled with activities and experiences, and “The mix discourse” where the library is a mix of these two. The discourses show a complex and varied image and there is a slight ambiguity about what the purpose The City Library of Malmö should be.

In 2016 a new space for younger children opened at Malmö public library called Kanini. Kanini builds on a vision of the future library for children where flexibility, offers of new experiences and children’s participation will characterize the library space and activities. As some of the children are very young, a large group users are adults. The aim of this master’s study is to examine a) how adults use the new children’s library in relation to the intentions expressed in Kanini’s steering documents and, b) adult conceptions of Kanini. In an ethnographic approach participant observations have been carried out at Kanini as well as an analysis of Kanini’s steering documents. The theoretical framework is based on the Four Space Model constructed by Henrik Jochumsen, Casper Hvenegaard Ramsussen and Dorte Skot-Hansen, together with a model of children’s participation developed by Barbro Johansson and Frances Hultgren as well as the concept of mothering developed by Sara Ruddick. The analysis of the material shows that adults in the main use Kanini as intended according to the documentation i.e. in new and creative ways. At the same time, adults tend to have traditional ideas of what a children’s library is and how to use it. There would seem to be a contradiction in perceptions of the children’s library and how it is actually used. Conclusions include that the vision of the future children’s library may take some time to replace traditional expectations.

Den här rapporten är en sammanställning utav processerna och resultat av ett examensarbete som har utförts i samarbete med Sundsvalls stadsbibliotek. De planerar att utforma en visningsmiljö för välfärdsteknik. Den ska uppfylla målgruppernas behov samtidigt som visningsmiljön blir en integrerad del av bibliotekets miljö. Vårdtagare, deras anhöriga och vårdpersonal har för dålig eller för liten kunskap om välfärdsteknik. För att göra den känd, och också visa på nyttan behövs visningsmiljöer. Syftet med detta projekt har varit att ta fram olika koncept för hur en visningsmiljö kan se ut. Detta projekt har utförts utifrån designprocessen. Den består av en analytisk fas, en kreativ fas och avslutningsvis en presentationsfas. Under analysfasen har information inhämtats med hjälp av enkäter, en marknadsanalys, funktionsanalys, kravspecifiation, aktivitetsanalys, intervjuer och ett studiebesök. Under den kreativa fasen så har idégenereringar utförts, skisser och testmodeller har utformats och användartester har genomförts. I presentationsfasen så presenteras det slutgiltiga konceptet i form av renderingar, miljöbilder och en slutmodell. Utifrån svaren från enkäterna framkom det att respondenternas topp tre alternativ för att testa välfärdsteknik var en fysisk plats där de kunde känna på grejerna, en informationsvideo eller en visningsmiljö i VR (Virtual reality). Dessa tre koncept har därefter gått igenom användartester. Resultatet av användartesterna visade att ett VR-koncept var att föredra framför en fysisk modell eller en instruktionsvideo. Det slutgiltiga konceptet blev en visningsmiljö i VR. Denna visningsmiljö kan användas på tre olika sätt: genom att besöka DigidelCenter inne på Sundsvalls stadsbibliotek, få besök av Mobidig, eller själv hemifrån med hjälp av ett VR-headset.

I mitt examensarbete har jag undersökt hur man kan designa en bekväm sittmöbel för offentlig plats, så att den kan produceras och brukas på ett hållbart sätt. Detta är extra viktigt i miljöer där möbler slits i hög takt, och där man i dagsläget bortprioriterar reparation och låter möbler stå och förfalla. I projektet har jag arbetat platsspecifikt med Stockholms stadsbibliotek, men designat med tanken att den kan passa i flera olika miljöer. Detta examensprojekt presenterar ett förslag på hur företag och kommuner kan ställa om till ett mer cirkulärt sätt att bruka möbler. Designförslaget som presenteras är ett alternativ till en stoppad fåtölj. Bind är designad för att kunna produceras och brukas på ett hållbart sätt, så att den kan få ett långt och värdigt liv och bidra till en cirkulär ekonomi. / In my thesis I have investigated how to design a comfortable seating furniture for public spaces, so that it can be produced and used in a sustainable way. This is particularly important in environments where furniture is worn at a high rate, and where repair is currently not prioritized and furniture is left to decay. In the project, I have worked site-specifically with Stockholm City Library, but designed with the idea that it can fit in several different environments. This degree project presents a proposal on how companies and municipalities can switch to a more circular way of using furniture. The design proposal presented is an alternative to an upholstered armchair. Bind is designed to be produced and used in a sustainable way, so that it can have a long and dignified life and contribute to a circular economy.

The purpose of this study is to analyze and describe how the children’s department in a library has developed until today. The study shall contribute to a deeper understanding of how the view of children within libraries has changed over time and how the libraries work with children and youths today. I will, in my study, describe how the library in Kalmar looked when it comes to their focus on children and how the focus look like today regarding this library. I will also study if there are any similarities or differences when it comes to the growth of Kalmar’s children’s department compared to a national development of children’s libraries. The study is done with an institutional theoretical framework with ideal types as a central concept. The method I’m using is qualitative content analysis. The material consists mostly of archive documents in the form of protocols, annual reports, and newspaper clippings regarding the period relevant for my study. The analysis shows that Kalmar’s City Library has undergone a major development regarding the evolution of children’s libraries. A lot of this development is consistent with the national development regarding children’s libraries but there are also some differences in the development on a local level.

Namnet på pojektet är ”Att lyfta ett monument” och handlar om en ny tillbyggnad till Stockholms stadsbibliotek. Förslaget syftar till att utöka bibliotekets publika ytor och utrymmesmässigt fokus har varit basarerna från 1930 som vetter mot Sveavägen. Biblioteket är ett unikt kulturarv och troligtvis Sveriges kändaste byggnad utomlands. Att göra en ny tillbyggnad till ett sådant monument auktualiserar omdelebart en mängd frågor. Min frågeställning när jag satte igång berörde hur jag som arkitekt bör tänka då jag utformar ett tillägg i en historiskt känslig kontext. Vilka förhållningssätt är de mest lämpliga i en så pass laddad och världs­unik ­miljö? Som ­arkitekt tycker jag att man alltid noggrant bör ta ställning till sin omgivning och relatera till den i sitt förslag. I detta projekt har jag fått möjligheten och utmaningen att öva mig i konsten att relatera i en kontext av exceptionellt stor vikt. Metoden som jag har arbetat fram kallar jag för Sampling. Målet vid utformningen av tillbyggnaden har varit att underordna sig huvudbyggnaden utan att hemfalla åt ­pastisch. Min tes är att jag kan tillåta mig själv rätt stor frihet, så länge som jag identifierar och återanvänder bärande motiv, material, rumsorganisation, färgscheman och liknande från biblioteket. På så sätt är målet att de två byggnaderna ska komma att harmoniera och, förhoppningsvis, även lyfta varandra. / The name of the project is "Lifting a monument" and is about a new extension to Stockholm's city library. The proposal aims to expand the public areas of the library and the spatial focus has been the bazaars of 1930 facing Sveavägen. The library is a unique cultural heritage and probably Sweden's most famous building abroad. Making a new extension to such a monument instantly raises many issues. My question when I started was about how I as an architect should think when designing a supplement in a historically sensitive context. Which approaches are most appropriate in such a charged and world-unique environment? As an architect, I think that one should always carefully consider its surroundings and relate to it in its proposal. In this project I have been given the opportunity and challenge to practice the art of relating in a context of exceptional importance. The method I have worked out I call Sampling. The goal in designing the extension has been to submit to the main building without falling into the pastiche. My thesis is that I can allow myself quite a lot of freedom, as long as I identify and reuse the supporting motifs, materials, room organization, color schemes and the like from the library. In this way, the goal is that the two buildings will harmonize and, hopefully, also lift each other.

Ett designförslag för Sundsvalls stadsbiblioteket om att öka tillgänglighet med fokus på både den fysiska och digitala informationstillgången. Detta innebär en förädling av entréområdet i biblioteket, alltför att göra digitala tjänster mer lättförståeliga och tillgängliga för biblioteksanvändarna.  Rapporten redovisar hela designprocessen, genom analysfas, kreativ fas och presentationsfas där den slutliga lösningen presenteras.  I analysfasen hämtades fakta och information genom möten med bibliotekspersonalen, en enkätundersökning (30), intervjuer och på platsobservationer. Den kreativ fasen utfördes genom skissarbete och rumslig skissmodellering i CAD för att därigenom hitta en balanserad lösning av digital tillgänglighet i ett specifikt rum. I presentationsfasen har en sammanställning gjort av de tidigare upptäckterna och där presenteras det slutliga designarbetet som en lösning till designutmaningen.

This is a two years master’s thesis that studies five libraries. The purpose with the paper was to look at a specific material and study how it expresses itself around the architecture of the buildings, an if the descriptions were different depending on the library, public library or university library.  The conclusion is that the ways of describing the library buildings have varied; depending on one part time and one part evolution. The way library buildings look and have been used has changed over time also, and as well how people perceive and talk, or in this case write about them.
