Previous issue date: 2007-05-11 / The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the symbolical trajectory of Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, a character created by Joss Whedon in the 1990s. The show which tells Buffy s story consists of 144 episodes, which where considered a ratings phenomenon in many countries. In order to reach this objective, all 144 episodes were watched and schematized in summaries, which made it possible to identify and discriminate significant events, images and sequences in the composition of Buffy and her journey. The themes that seemed to be relevant at this point were closely related to the hero s archetype, which is the motivator of the process of the development of consciousness. Therefore, the analysis is based on C. G. Jung s concepts of analytical psychology and on Joseph Campbell s study of the heroic cycle. Buffy is regarded as a contemporary image of the hero s archetype. Throughout her journey, she was faced with seven challenges of growing complexity, which called for deep transformation and encompassed the formation of the persona, the withdrawal of projections, and the process of making aspects of shadow and animus conscious and integrated. Her trajectory is crowned with the possibility of transforming herself as well as her surroundings. In the first six confrontations, Buffy finds a way to save the world, but in the last (the seventh), she transforms it.

Låt ingen komma undan : Hanteringen av främmande kroppar i Marvels filmuniversum / Leave none alive : Treating foreign bodies in Marvel's cinematic universeLarsson, Vix January 2017 (has links)
This essay examines the appearance of non-normative bodies in three films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe; The Avengers (2012), Thor: The Dark World (2013) and Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), in an attempt to find qualities that might suggest queer, non-binary or gender disruptive attributes, in addition to looking at how the movies handle them. Using a combination of feminist film theory, queer theory and discourse analysis, the Otherness of these bodies are put into contrast with the normative and hegemonic gender expressions employed by the protagonists, the heroes of the films. While the study finds several indications of transgressive bodies and 'gender ambiguity' among the creatures and beings who play the part of inhuman threat, as well as the presence of discourses that paint them as threatening partly because of these qualities, they remain blurred and ill-defined, their queerness inferred rather than overt. The preferred reading, the analysis suggests, offers little in the way of identification, but all the more with regard to oppression. The way these bodies are treated in all three films implies that the tolerance for bodily deviance is virtually non-existent, and that a defining quality of masculine leadership is the ability to banish them from existence.

Divided Crowns: An Ideological Criticism of Self-Black Determination and Conflicting Visions of Wakanda in Black PantherHubbard, Alaya E. 01 January 2024 (has links) (PDF)
Using an ideological criticism of Hollywood’s Black Panther (2018), this paper analyzes the differing portrayals of the self-Black determination of the film’s main characters, T’Challa and Killmonger, as it relates to their backgrounds, cultural connections, racial identities, power dynamics, and their fights for social justice. Aspects of the film that were analyzed included characters’ actions, dialogue, lore, and presence. Digging deeper into the film’s story once key themes were revealed. This examination included parallels to the real-world, including locations, social movements, and social reformation leaders. The goal of the paper is to show how the film offers insights into broader issues of identity, culture, power, and social justice.

"Power To the People" : le déclin de la figure du superhéros dans les films américains après 2001 / « Power to the People » : The decline of the Superhero Icon in American Films since 9/11Ducreux, Jean-Guy 26 October 2013 (has links)
The main topic of this doctoral thesis is the study of the decline of the superhero icon in American films after 9/11. Superhero productions are at an all-time high, and yet, the superhero's morale is at an all-time low. This paradox is best illustrated with the dual image of Batman stuck at Ground Zero, staring up at the projection of his chevron looming large in the sky of Gotham City. The glowing merchandise transcends an otherwise sullied character. This dissertation focuses on three main realms: the superhero's loss of masculinity at the end of the twentieth century, leading to the formal opposition between the figures of the quarterback and the cheerleader, or between Superman and Everyman, and the reactionary, warpath revival which started in 2005; the travails of the flailing Superego and its shifting relationship to the almighty Id, represented by the twenty-first century glorified supervillain; and, finally, the inimical sociopolitical backdrop for the superhero's prowess, in which Fukuyama's prevalent isothymia eventually denies the superhero his just laurels. The postmodern superhero thus appears as a national misfit, also because this cultural commodity now reaches far beyond the traditional boundaries of the « American Way », to embrace an increasingly globalized market.
