Coverage of the consumption of nyaope in two South African tabloids : a compartive study of the Sowetan and Daily Sun Newspapers

Mabokela, Khutso Eunice January 2018 (has links)
Thesis ((M. A. (Media Studies)) --University of Limpopo, 2018 / This is a comparative study on the coverage of the consumption of nyaope in two South African tabloid newspapers, namely the Sowetan and the Daily Sun. The study examines how the tabloids understudy reported on the consumption of the street drug; nyaope, by determining the frequency and nature of news reports, assessing the quality of the news reports and comparing the news reporting styles adopted by both newspapers. The research report draws from media effects theoretical propositions, namely the agenda setting and framing theories. Detailed literature review on tabloids and coverage of illicit drugs particularly nyaope is discussed in this study. The study adopted quantitative-qualitative as the research approach through the use of descriptive design. In addition, data were collected through quantitative-qualitative content analysis. The study used the check list as a method of collecting data. Subsequently, Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was adopted for the data analysis process. The study noted that the quality of any tabloid newspaper is centred on the manner in which it reports on societal issues like drug use and abuse, crime, health issues, politics, et cetera. The study results revealed that both tabloids’ frequency on the coverage of the consumption of nyaope was minimal as part of the requisite contribution towards combating drug use among young people. Furthermore, the study noted that the quality of news reports in both newspapers was truthful, accurate, fair, and balanced. The styles of news reporting indicated that the two newspapers made conscious efforts to avoid deliberate derogatory or discriminating references discriminatory towards nyaope users. In conclusion, the study examined the employment of mechanisms by the South African print media (tabloids) to ensure frequent, non-sensational, informed and detailed reporting, regarding issues on the consumption of illicit drugs particularly nyaope.

Srovnání bulvárních trendů českých deníků Blesk a Aha! v letech 2006-2012 / Comparison of tabloidization trends of czech journals Blesk and Aha! in 2006-2012

Snížková, Markéta January 2014 (has links)
Diploma thesis "Comparison of Tabloid Trends in Czech Daily Tabloid Press Blesk and Aha! in the period of 2006-2012" focuses on tabloid trends of two Czech tabloids Blesk and Aha! in the period of 2006-2012. One of the goals is to compare the degree of tabloidization in both daily press throughout time in respect of defined tabloid features. The study clarifies and defines tabloid features and how they change in time through quantitative content analysis. The quantitative part is completed with qualitative case study which compares the tabloid aspects in tabloid press Blesk and broadsheet Lidové noviny. The results of the analysis say that some tabloid trends, for the most part visualization, are more intense, on the other hand some presumptions are not confirmed, for example big titles or short texts in the articles. Czech tabloid daily press is characterized by dominance of home news and soft news, this proportion did not change through time. The results of case study about death of former president Václav Havel in 2011 indicate that Blesk and Lidové noviny refer about the same topic in a different way in the beginning. After a few days the way of referring about death of the former president is more similar in terms of tabloid trends. However, tabloid press Blesk is more concentrated on the...

The popularity of tabloids: a reception analysis of the Daily Sun amongst Grahamstown readers

Mapudzi, Hatikanganwi January 2009 (has links)
Tabloid journalism has and continues to spark controversy. Scholarly considerations of tabloid journalism often question its contribution to democratic causes. However, little academic attention has been given to the question of how tabloids are understood and evaluated by their audiences. This study considered a range of audience responses to the Daily Sun by analysing the way some of its readers understand and evaluate it. The study examined the appeal of this popular tabloid to some Grahamstown readers. Reception analysis was employed to determine why these people read the Daily Sun. In particular, the active audience theory was used as a framework to conduct the research. To achieve the objectives of the study, qualitative research methods such as focus group interviews and individual in-depth interviews were employed. Looking at the findings, many of the respondents acknowledged they read the tabloid for interpersonal communication, diversion and entertainment. The results also revealed that their lived context plays a major role in their reading of stories. In a wider context, the research contributes to an understanding of the popularity of tabloid newspapers.

A Survey on Student Uses of and Attitudes Toward Broadcast Television News and "Tabloid" Television

McDonnell, Rafael C. (Rafael Charles) 08 1900 (has links)
A survey testing student uses of and attitudes towards traditional broadcast television news and eleven "tabloid" programs was conducted using 300 students enrolled at the University of North Texas. The 10:00 p.m. newscast was most watched by the students. The most watched weekly news magazine was "60 Minutes." The Oprah Winfrey Show" was the daily "tabloid" leader. "America's Most Wanted" led the weekly "tabloid" shows. Students perceived daily newscasts as important sources of information. "USA Today," the weekly news magazines "60 Minutes" and "20/20,1" and "America's Most Wanted" were also cited by students as being "important" information programming. However, the survey showed "tabloid television" was not a major source of informational programming for college students.

Backman, Sofie January 2008 (has links)
<p>Abstract</p><p>Title: A gaze says more than a 1000 words – a study of the portrayal of female celebrities in the photographic material on the online portals of Aftonbladet and Expressen En blick säger mer än 1000 ord - en studie av porträtteringen av kvinnliga kändisar i Aftonbladetsoch Expressens bildmaterial på Internet</p><p>Number of pages: 58 (59 including enclosures)</p><p>Author: Sofie Backman</p><p>Tutor: Amelie Hössjer</p><p>Course: Media and Communication Studies D</p><p>Period: Spring 2008</p><p>University: Division of Media and Communication, Department of Information Science, Uppsala University, Sweden</p><p>Aim: The aim of this essay is to study in what ways female celebrities are portrayed in the photographic material of the Swedish tabloid press. In which situations does she appear? What function does she seem to behold in the pictures? Further the thesis explores whetherthe portrayal of the female celebrity shows signs of stereotyping.</p><p>Method/Material: The study combines a quantitative and a qualitative method. A picture analysis of photographic material from the online versions of the Swedish tabloids Aftonbladet and Expressen has been conducted. To do this, a model based on categories from gender and celebrity research in the media field was created and then applied on the material. The study included 40 photographs of Swedish and international female celebritites from the popular culture industries and was studied in-depth according to elements such as activity, smile, gaze, distance and roles.</p><p>Main Results: The main results from the picture analysis show that the female celebrity is seldom shown performing any clear activity in the pictures; she is often passive and posing and she is portrayed as an object to be looked at. She also seems to be aware of this position. There is great focus on body and looks, which even further enhances the objectification. The pictures of the female celebrity show clear signs of stereotypisation. The female role in the pictures can be described using the keywords: inactive, available, personal address, body and looks and an object to be looked at.</p><p>Keywords: women, celebrity, stereotypes, picture analysis, Swedish tabloid press</p>

"Hopplöst läge" : En kvalitativ studie över rapporteringen om sexualbrott på musikfestivaler sommaren 2016

Fernstedt, Nora, Karlsson, Ayla January 2017 (has links)
This study aimed to examine how swedish tabloid press covered the sex crimes at music festivals that occurred in Sweden during the summer of 2016. The aim was also to examine if and how the press reproduces or opposes stereotypes and myths about sexual crime. The question examined was: How does swedish tabloid press portray victims, perpetrators, the festivals and sex crime?   To approach this we made a critical discourse analysis on 13 articles from the swedish newspapers Aftonbladet and Expressen, written during the time of the events. We found that there were many different and contradictory discourses about the sex crimes in our case. The victim was presented as innocent and without blame but there was also a discourse telling that women have a responsibility in making sure not to become a victim of sexual assault, by behaving and dressing right. The perpetrator was described as deviant and evil men, but also as men driven by lust not knowing what they were doing. They were also distant and indistinct in the text, which shifted the blame to the organizers of the festivals and to the police. Sex crime was overall presented as a serious phenomena. It was also presented as a new phenomena, both on the festivals and in the society. The crimes were presented as a problem isolated to festivals but also as a broader social problem. The festivals were described as unsafe places but also as safe places that had been soiled by the sex crimes.

"Hästtjejen som blev en styckmördare" : En kvalitativ studie om representationen av en kvinnlig gärningsman i Aftonbladet och Nerikes Allehanda / “The horse girl who became a murderer who dismembered her victim”

Maric, Julia, Killgren, Sandra January 2016 (has links)
The aim of the study was to examine how crime journalism relates to gender by exploring how a female perpetrator is constructed in Swedish news media. We examined a specific case where a female perpetrator murdered and dismembered her victim in Askersund, Örebro. The questions examined were; How are the female perpetrator represented in the tabloid Aftonbladet and the local newspaper Nerikes Allehanda and what are the differences and similarities between Aftonbladet’s and Nerikes Allehanda’s representation of her? We made a discourse analysis of eighteen news articles. The result shows that the female perpetrator is represented as a non-ideal female perpetrator, a heartbroken and weak victim and an ordinary woman who suddenly transforms. Aftonbladet and Nerikes Allehanda also represent the female perpetrator as an evil and insensitive murderer and like a jealous madman. Both Aftonbladet and Nerikes Allehanda describe that the female perpetrator saw her victim as a rival. At the beginning, mainly Nerikes Allehanda, represent the female perperator as a part of the community by representing her as a kind and innocent girl who loves horses. Then the representation is changing and the female perpetrator is represented as an intruder in the community. This representation also appears in Aftonbladet. However the tabloid mostly represents the female perpetrator with attributes like vicious, callous, jealous and mad. Our study also shows that the distance between the newspapers and the place where the crime occurred, influences the representation of the female perpetrator.

The Avant-Garde in the Tabloids: Cultural Reconfiguration in the Argentine Popular Press of the 1920s

Baffi, Maria Carolina January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation analyzes a set of innovative literary practices happening in the popular press in Argentina in the 1920s. It takes its departure from two theoretical premises: that what precipitated the historical avant-garde was the spread of mass culture and that art redraws its limits by incorporating the foreign into it. With these premises in mind, the dissertation shows that the aguafuertes of novelist Roberto Arlt and the women’s columns by poet Alfonsina Storni, because they were written especially for the popular press and because their authors positioned themselves as artists of and in the media, the two—Arlt and Storni—were able to process political, social, and economic changes in a forceful and unprecedented way. Technologically accelerated modernization became their vehicle, and it allowed them to contribute to the democratization of the Argentine cultural field in that decade. Further, analysis of this under-read corpus allows me to assert that it was their journalistic texts in which Arlt and Storni experimented with novel poetics, which “modernized” their own more literary practices. Published in discardable formats that were hardly prestigious in the center of the mass media of the day, these texts have passed largely unperceived by critics, although in their moment they formed part of a broad cultural agitation that they themselves in part created. Their marginal placement doesn’t obscure the same procedures used in them as was used by the classic avant-garde. In their newspaper writings, Arlt and Storni erased the borders between genres, re-used found materials and did not shun low materials, provoked the public and at the same time included the public, transgressed reigning norms for the behavior of women. No understanding of the 20s in the Río de la Plata can dispense with these texts, and others like them. They were an integral part of the cultural network; more than this, they worked through the extreme transformations of the epoch—as this dissertation shows—with a radicality beyond that of the local avant-gardes.

Exemplars, Vox pop and the question of the day. : A quantitative content analysis of exemplars in three Swedish newspapers 1997 and 2007.

Rube, Agnes, Svensson, Ida January 2009 (has links)
<p>The purpose of this BA-thesis was to study how three daily Swedish newspapers use a specific type of exemplars, which are recognized by a number of attributes. A photograph of the person that is interviewed always illustrates this type of exemplars and at least two persons are asked the same question.    The three newspapers that have been compared in this study each represent one of the major types of Swedish newspapers: morning press, tabloids and local press. By using a quantitative content analysis, one month was examined in all three newspapers in the year of 1997 and 2007.  Two of the theories that have been central in the thesis are Colin Sparks model of tabloidization, which demonstrates the process of tabloidization and McQuail′s description of commercialization.  The results of the study indicate that there are many similarities between the three newspapers use of exemplars. However, there are some differences when it comes to frequency and function. Noteworthy is that the newspaper “Dagens Nyheter” did not publish a single exemplar the first year of the study, 1997. Ten years later the very same paper published 15 exemplars during the month of examination.</p>

Nordangård, Olof January 2007 (has links)
