The English Translation of the Epitaph of the Wu Kingdom Transcendent Duke Ge of the Left Palace of the Grand Bourne by Tao Hongjing

January 2020 (has links)
abstract: This thesis is a translation and analysis of the “Epitaph of the Wu Kingdom Transcendent Duke Ge of the Left Palace of the Grand Bourne” (Epitaph below). The author was Tao Hongjing (456 CE-536 CE). The subject of this Epitaph inscribed on a stele was Ge Xuan (trad. 164 CE-244 CE). Ge Xuan had two titles attributed to him by later Daoists. According to the Lingbao scriptures, Ge was appointed by the Perfected of Grand Bourne, a heavenly title. Later, in the Shangqing scriptures, Ge Xuan was said to be an earthly transcendent without any heavenly appointment. This debate occurred before Tao Hongjing began to write. This stele epitaph is essential, as it records sayings from both Lingbao and Shangqing scriptures. By reading this translated epitaph, scholars can know more about different versions of Ge Xuan's legend, as well as how Ge Xuan's legend was constantly rewritten by later Daoists. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Religious Studies 2020

Readings Of Chinese Poet Xue Tao

Yu, Lu 01 January 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Xue Tao was one of the Tang Dynasty's best-known female poets. Her poems are beautiful and of her own style, but there have only been a few of studies on them. This study comprises nine close readings of her thirteen poems most of which can be defined as yongwu poems, as well as a conclusion which summarizes the main characteristics in these poems. The methodology of this research is based on the theory of New Criticism and combined with sinology. Every poem is studied as an independent entity, but its allusions and images are examined in the history of Chinese poetry. This study attempts to deepen the study of Xue Tao’s poetry and readers’ understanding of it.

Home Sweet Home

Cheng, Pai-Hsueh 27 July 2023 (has links)
Home Sweet Home is a short horror film that tells the story of Gavin and his encounters with supernatural energies after he moves to a new room. In the end, the story reveals that his roommate is the initiator. The movie draws inspiration from a variety of classic horror films, with an emphasis on those that are set in homes and bedrooms. Home is usually considered the safest place, but when this familiar place is haunted, it tortures us, and we have nowhere to run. Taiwanese religious elements along with urban legends, are featured prominently in the video as a source of the terror. / Master of Fine Arts / Home Sweet Home is a short horror film produced by a group of Virginia Tech students. The film tells the story of Gavin following his encounters with the paranormal following his relocation to a new room. In the end, the story reveals that his roommate is the initiator. The film is inspired by many classic horror films with a concentration on films containing scenes in the bedroom and at home in particular, such as the Japanese movie" Ju On," the "A Nightmare on Elm Street" series, and "It Follows," etc. Home is usually considered the safest place, but when this familiar place is haunted, it tortures us, and there is nowhere we can flee. Taiwanese religious elements and urban legends are featured prominently in the video as a source of terror. Details in the film show Taiwanese's unique religious belief culture: a blend of Taoism, Buddhism, and some Hinduism and local beliefs.

Dwelling in the Vision of Utopia: A Politico-Religious Reading of Tao Qian

Lian, Jiani 17 July 2015 (has links) (PDF)
The present work offers a critical analysis of Tao Qian’s political and religious thought from readings of his poetic works. Focused on Tao Qian’s writings about the “Way” and the crisis of the “Way”, I examine how he constructs his political utopia and religious utopia that stand out as his response to the multidimensional existential crisis. Chapter 1 provides a summary of Tao’s depictions of the “Way” and the crisis of the “Way”, which serves as the textual ground of this study. Chapter 2 introduces the interdisciplinary methods that I have adopted to read and understand Tao Qian. Basically this study is informed by ideas and insights from modern disciplines of political thought and religious studies. Chapter 3 focuses on Tao Qian’s political utopia and discloses the philosophical traditions and personal innovations of Tao's political thought. Chapter 4 introduces Tao Qian’s religious utopia, with focus on how he manifests the sacred world and how he proposes to get to the sacred.

Arsenault, Lou Manuel 09 January 2024 (has links)
Based on philosopher Yuk Hui's concept of cosmotechnics and its implications, this dissertation attempts to highlight the particularity of Aztec technology and the cosmological elements on which it is based. While much of 20th-century Western thought has failed to recognize the existence of technodiversity through the assumption of the universality of modern Western technology, this work seeks to highlight the existence of an otherness to it. Three cosmological elements of the Aztec and wider Mesoamerican world are explored: the figure of the Mimixcoa, women's belief in giving birth to enemies and the equivalence between war and hunting, the erotic nature of the latter and the figure of the deer. A heterogeneous range of practices and techniques in both war and hunting contexts are then discussed, and related to cosmological elements. In this way, the specific characteristics of Aztec cosmotechnic are put forward, which we consider to be a "cosmotechnic of identification", thus confirming Philippe Descola's intuitions and developments regarding analogist ontologies and the practice of sacrifice. This multi-disciplinary project claims to be in keeping with decolonial thinking, and at the same time with what is known as the "ontological turn" in anthropology.

Henriot, Kevin 07 1900 (has links)
We present three results in additive combinatorics, a recent field at the interface of combinatorics, harmonic analysis and analytic number theory. The unifying theme in our thesis is the detection of additive structure in arithmetic sets of low density, with an emphasis on quantitative aspects. Our first contribution is an improved density estimate for the problem, initiated by Bourgain and others, of finding a long arithmetic progression in a triple sumset. Our second result is a generalization of Sanders' bounds for Roth's theorem from the dense setting, to the setting of small doubling in an arbitrary abelian group. Finally, we extend the best known quantitative results for Roth's theorem in the primes, to all translation-invariant systems of equations of complexity one.

Entiers friables et formes binaires / Friable integers and binary forms

Lachand, Armand 02 December 2014 (has links)
An integer is called y-friable if its largest prime factor does not exceed y. Friable values of binary forms play a central role in the integer factoring algorithm NFS (Number Field Sieve). In this thesis, we obtain some asymptotic formulas for the number of representations of friable integers by various classes of polynomials. In the first part, we focus on binary forms which split as a product of a linear form and a quadratic form. To achieve this, we combine the inclusion-exclusion principle with ideas based on works of Fouvry and Iwaniec and Balog, Blomer, Dartyge and Tenenbaum related to the distribution of some sequences of integers represented by quadratic forms. We then take a closer look at friable values of irreducible cubic forms. Extending some previous works of Heath-Brown and Moroz concerning primes represented by such polynomials, we provide some asymptotic formulas which hold in a large range of friability. With this method, we also evaluate some means over the values of an irreducible cubic form for other multiplicative functions including the Möbius function and the Liouville function. In the last chapter, we investigate the correlations between nilsequences and the characteristic function of friable integers. By using the nilpotent method of Green and Tao, our work provides a formula for the number of friable integers represented by a product of affine forms such that any two forms are affinely independent

The thesis starts with a biographical study of Tao's life and religious experiences by regarding him as an individual living in given social and cultural milieu, in contrast to the general explanatory model related to the development of Taoism in the medieval China. The purpose of the biographical study is to acquire a sympathetic understanding of Tao's point of view of the revealed texts, which will partly explain why Tao concentrated on the revealed manuscripts. Reading into the exegetic texts, I will reconsider Tao's status in the between of revealed manuscripts and Maoshan Revelations with their own meanings and coherent structures, bases on which new understanding of the relation between Tao and Maoshan Revelations will be elucidated with discovery of Tao's authorship in the formation of the Maoshan Revelations. After textual criticism of the exegetic texts, setting the structure and contexts of Tao's exegesis as the starting point, I will link up the exegetic texts with Tao's other writings to reconstruct his Taoist thoughts. / This thesis examines the Taoist thoughts of Tao Hongjing (456-536) through a detailed analysis of his exegetic work on Maoshan Revelations. I will attempt to figure out the structure and elements of Tao's Taoist thoughts in my reading of the exegesis, and then reconsider Tao's other writings and Taoist practices within the interpretative framework consists of the structure and theological elements found in the exegesis. Thus, this thesis will consider the following questions respectively: how Tao's individual life and mysterious experiences shaped his understanding of revealed manuscripts; Tao's role as compiler and author in the formation of Maoshan Revelations, setting Tao's exegesis within the tension between fragmentary revealed manuscripts and Taoist scriptures with coherent structures and systematical Taoist thoughts; how one can reconstruct and understand Tao's Taoist thoughts through the structure and contents of his exegesis on Maoshan Revelations, within which his Taoist thoughts unfolded. / This work will bring forth an alternative account for Tao as an individual with Taoist belief that based his religious world on revealed Taoist teachings. With the help of biographical study on Tao's mysterious experiences and dreams and reading into the exegesis, the significances of revelations in Tao's Taoist thoughts will be illuminated in following ways: Tao's mysterious experiences made him believe in the authenticity of the revealed teachings; his sympathetic understanding of revealed manuscripts drew him into the exegetic work, within which he unfolded his Taoist thoughts; Tao turned to the revealed teachings of the immortals through meditation when he run into problems during his Taoist practice. / Sumitted: 2005年12月[Dec. 2005] / Sumitted: 2005 nian 12 yue [Dec. 2005] / Adviser: Chi-tim Lai. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 70-09, Section: A, page: . / Thesis (doctoral)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2006. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 231-243). / Electronic reproduction.

Li, Shiyan 08 September 2011 (has links)
Eastern spirituality is driven by thought about emptiness : that of Taoism and of Buddhism and their coming together in various syntheses. It is at the heart of the art of scholars. Contemporary Chinese artists have been influenced by Western modern art and, for the last thirty years, by contemporary art. Some of these artists have succeeded in using thought nourished by tradition in order to examine this new field. Far from being synonymous with absence, emptiness in these processes corresponds to an acceptance of a reality itself subordinated to the breathing of the world. Huang Yongping and Cai Guoqiang provide two examples of an approach in which the questions of identity and of dialogue with the West find its overcoming in a strategy disclaiming the dualism which usually prevails in this kind of debate. The Western world has been fascinated by the art and thought of the East for centuries. Emptiness has often been treated as nothingness in a negative sense (Hegel, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche). Other sources, however, have made us more open to the thought about emptiness. The inspiration of Zen Buddhism is only one example : recent publications by Jacquelynn Baas, Helen Westgeest and the authors gathered together by the American exhibition The Third Mind, all bear witness to its importance in the post-war period. The artists that I have selected here, Marcel Duchamp, Yves Klein and Robert Irwin, each have an original relationship with this corpus of images, concepts and experiences without ignoring the specifically Western contributions.
