This dissertation attempts to investigate the intertextual modus operandi in the oeuvre of H.J. Pieterse, with specific focus on his volumes, Alruin (1989) and Die burg van hertog Bloubaard (2000). The overarching purpose of the investigation is to prove that the author not only uses intertextuality in the sense that one text (literary text) refers to another text (literary and non–literary), or that one text influences another. Pieterse engages in conversation with other texts and re–writes these texts by repositioning them in another context and by adding additional metaphoric meaning to them. The author allows these texts to exchange conversation, to mutually influence one another, and this has as a result that, in his poems, his poetry and his oeuvre, metaphoric lines come into being, which lend a layered meaning to these texts and enrich the possibilities of their interpretation. Thus, a play on multiple meaning develops, which moves between texts: written texts, literary texts, non–literary texts, the author, the reader and the context(s). The conclusion to which this dissertation comes, is that the above mentioned manifestations of meanings, which exist and come into existence within the physically confines of the text, expand this text to a less confined existence in terms of meaning, more unlimited and unbound than what is necessarily allowed by the physically confined nature of the written text. The question thus arises of how the physically limited text take possession of and draws into the texts what lies beyond its physical confines to produce meaning, and how this tension around the limits of the literary text is functionally used. Consequentially, the question that follows is how this happens in the oeuvre of H.J. It is not possible to say with scientific certainty in what way a reader will interpret a book. To address this issue, this study focuses on the reader response theory as explained by Iser and Jauss. However, the reader response theory is at present supported by research from the cognitive theory to narratology. This study attempts to understand how a reader reasons with regards to a certain text. A further aim is to understand why a specific reader will think about and interpret the text in the way he or she does. In this study the books 30 Nagte in Amsterdam (30 Nights in Amsterdam) by Etienne van Heerden and Swartskaap (Black Sheep) by Odette Schoeman is used to test the hypothesis. Qualitative research methods were used and the data was processed in different stages as is displayed in the addendum DVD.

In this study, it was found that a reader's response will always be influenced by his/her background. Readers use their background either to make sense of the book and the story it tells or to make sense of what has happened in their own lives in order to accept and understand it.
On account of the results reached in the study it can be argued that readers should be taken into account when books are reviewed and discussed, because they are the ones that have to do the actual reading. This descriptive study uses a qualitative, content analysis to examine the middle school visual arts and core Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) to determine the potential common learning activities that can be aligned between the two. By performing an alignment of the potential common learning activities present in the middle school visual art TEKS and the middle school core TEKS, I demonstrate that there is a foundation for curriculum integration in the Texas middle school visual arts classroom.

New TEKS Health Standards: Awareness, Perceived Knowledge, and Perceived Competency among Choral Music Educators in TexasBurrows, Gideon C. 08 1900 (has links)
In this study, I examined the awareness, perceptions of required knowledge, and perceived competency of Texas secondary choral music educators concerning the new musician health objectives included in the revised Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills standards (TEKS). A secondary purpose of this study was to identify the activities and variables that promote the development of these characteristics and prepare educators to address the standards in their instruction. Using a researcher-designed web-based survey instrument, I gathered data from participants who were actively teaching choir in secondary public schools in the state of Texas (N = 183). As part of the survey, participants reported the highest degree they had attained and field of study, the completion of choral methods and vocal pedagogy courses during their training, participation in professional development, and years of teaching experience. Findings revealed that a majority of participants (53.01%) were not aware of the health-related standards prior to taking the survey. A majority also did not consider each objective as required curricular components (hydration: 69.95%, vocal health: 39.89%, body mechanics: 61.75%, hearing protection: 68.85%, hygienic practice: 69.96%). Participants did rate themselves highly for perceived competency, a measure including adherence to competent practices and views of personal ability. There were no statistically significant main effects observed for any variable on awareness and perceptions of knowledge. I did observe significant main effects of degree level and major, professional development participation, and completion of a choral methods course for measures of perceived competency.

Investigating the role of translators in cross-language qualitative research in psychologyde Vos, Jacqueline January 2018 (has links)

Researchers in the field of cross-language research agree that issues on the role of
translators and translation are often neglected and even omitted in research reports, which
may affect the trustworthiness of such a study. The aim of this study was to investigate the
role of translators in cross-language qualitative research from the views of master’s and
doctoral students who conducted cross-language qualitative research in psychology at a
selected South African university.
Exploratory qualitative research and methodology were deemed suitable for this study. Key
participants were sampled through snowball sampling. Five postgraduates availed
themselves to participate. Data were collected by semi-structured e-mail, telephone and/or
face-to-face interviews. Semi-structured interviews were audio recorded and transcribed by
the researcher after the interviews. As the number of available participants was limited, the
researcher also sampled unpublished dissertations (5) and doctoral theses (2) to conduct
document analysis.
Transcripts were imported into ATLAS.ti™, whereafter the qualitative data were analysed
by means of thematic data analysis. Five main themes emerged from the data. Themes from
the transcripts as well as notes in the researcher’s reflective journal and relevant literature
findings were collated. Finally, a critical discussion was provided.
Key participants believed that translators may play a significant role in several stages of a
cross-language qualitative study. Participants reported experiencing several translation
challenges, namely: language barriers between them and their research participants;
difficulty translating subject terminology from English into Afrikaans; and outdated bilingual
scientific dictionaries. Findings also revealed that the credentials of the translator hired may
have an impact, whether positive or negative, on the translation product.
Reasons why translators may be excluded from a cross-language qualitative study were
also highlighted. Firstly, although some of the participants reported that translators may be
valuable in a cross-language study, all of them strongly asserted that they possessed high
language competency, and therefore they deemed the inclusion of translators unnecessary.

It also emerged that qualitative researchers may need to be cognisant of ethical issues that
may arise in a cross-language study. Translators may further be excluded as translation
may not be suitable for the specific research design (for example, phenomenology). Finally,
researchers may not have the financial means to hire translators.
None of the key participants reported the language/translation challenges they experienced
during their studies and the possible impact it may have had on the methodology or quality
of data. They did not deem it an important aspect of their studies. In some of the dissertations
and theses sampled, only the mother tongue of participants was often indicated but, in most
cases, was discussed very superficially. These researchers mostly mentioned (as part of
the biographic information) the language profile of their participants; that the data for that
study were collected in either Afrikaans or English; and that the data were translated and
analysed. Finally, although some of the sampled research reports were edited by
professional language practitioners, translation and grammatical errors were clear
throughout in the manuscripts. From this research it was clear that including translators in
cross-language qualitative research in psychology is not a common practice in the South
African context, and matters relating to translation and how challenges in this regard were
dealt with are grossly neglected and mostly omitted in postgraduate research reports. To
conclude, limitations of this study were highlighted, and recommendations for future
translation research and practice were made.

Sleuteldeelnemers is deur middel van sneeubalsteekproefneming gekies. Vyf nagraadse
studente het hulleself beskikbaar gestel om aan die navorsing deel te neem. Data is deur

Sleuteldeelnemers was van mening dat vertalers ʼn belangrike rol kan speel in verskeie fases van ʼn kruistaal kwalitatiewe studie. Volgens deelnemers het hulle verskeie vertaaluitdagings
ervaar, naamlik: taalhindernisse tussen hulle (die navorser) en hul navorsingsdeelnemers;
uitdagings om vakterminologie van Engels in Afrikaans te vertaal; en verouderde tweetalige
vakwoordeboeke. Bevindinge het ook getoon dat die aangestelde vertaler se kwalifikasies
ʼn impak mag hê, hetsy positief óf negatief, op die vertaalproduk.
Redes waarom vertalers van ʼn kruistaal kwalitatiewe studie uitgesluit kan wees, is ook
uitgelig. Ten eerste, hoewel enkele deelnemers meegedeel het dat vertalers in ʼn kruistaal
kwalitatiewe studie waardevol kan wees, het alle deelnemers sterk benadruk dat hulle oor

Kerkliedere vir 'n nuwe generasie - 'n Liturgies-himnologiese ontwerp onder voorwaarde van die EkumeneKloppers, Elizabeth C. 05 August 2004 (has links)
Hymns are handed down from generation to generation, from country to country, and from church to church. In every time in history, hymns and songs are needed that are new for that time and generation – hymns through which the timeless message can be voiced in a new and unique way. The historical binding, as well as the ecumenical tie, are thus indispensable features for the church, her liturgy and her music. In the processes of creating new hymns and liturgical forms, the una sancta ecclesia always needs to be in focus. In this study the ecumenical and liturgical movements of the twentieth century, their goals, and the influence they exerted on liturgical renewal and hymn singing, are investigated. The ecumenical meaning of new hymns and liturgical forms is evaluated in terms of these goals. To determine the functionality of new hymns, a theoretical grounding for the various functions of hymns is given. Renewal in the form of contemporary material, new styles and ecumenical-liturgical forms is reflected in the Liedboek van die Kerk (2001), the new hymnal for the Afrikaans-speaking churches. The hymnal is discussed with regard to the content, and the processes of compilation. The versification of the psalms, fundamentalist views, and the resistance to transformation in the processes of canonization, also comes under scrutiny. Documentation, motivation and report of about sixty new hymns and liturgical forms in the Liedboek van die Kerk (2001) are given. Hymns, songs and liturgical forms are researched from hymnological perspectives, by relevant musical and textual analysis, and by exploring their origin, history, working history, and liturgical function. The functionality of the hymns is assessed, and their hymnological, liturgical, contextual and ecumenical significance determined, with regard to the theoretical grounding in the preceding chapters. The conclusion is that ecumenicity is a sine qua non for the hymns and songs of a new generation. History and tradition, but also the contemporary church as a whole, should co-determine processes. The future of liturgical singing depends on the way in which theological, liturgical, hymnological, ecumenical and anthropological fields of tension could be kept in balance. Balance thus needs to be found between functionality, ethics, and aesthetics; between tradition and creativity; historical fidelity and contemporary embodiment; individualism and community; between the individual church and ecumenism; quality and popularity; between Christian/confessional identity, and general religiosity; between orthodox expressions of faith, and the poetical-symbolical shifting of boundaries. Boundaries are exceeded through the singing of hymns – boundaries of language, of confession, of time and space, and boundaries between individuals and groups. Liturgical singing can be the singing of believers of all times and all places only by preserving the traditional ecumenical heritage on the one hand, and on the other hand, through ecumenical cooperation when creating new hymns and forms – thus the one faith in many languages, the audible sign of the una sancta ecclesia. / Thesis (DMus)--University of Pretoria, 2005. / Music / DMus / Unrestricted
