This work studies the transposition from the book to the television and the resources used in this transposition, which bring the written narrative to the television narrative.We also study the paratexts present in both plots, which contribute to the composition of Queiroz’s and Globo’s work as a whole, but not being actually part of the story. For that, this paper was divided in three sections: the first theoretical one, which brings studies abaout literature, television and transposition; the second one which studies paratexts; and the third one, which studies the tansposition from the written story to the television. For that, we used as theoretical resorces Linda Hutcheon, Ana Balogh and Gerard Genette. / O presente trabalho busca estudar a narrativa de Rachel Queiroz, intitulada Memorial de Maria Moura, publicada em 1992, e sua adaptação homônima para a televisão em forma minissérie, exibida pela Rede Globo em 1994. Esta tese estuda a transposição do livro para a televisão e os recursos utilizados nessa transposição, os quais aproximam a narrativa escrita da televisiva. Estudamos, ainda, os paratextos presentes em ambas as tramas, a escrita e a adaptada, os quais contribuem para a composição da obra como um todo, mas não fazem parte da narrativa em si. Para tanto, o trabalho foi dividido em três capítulos: o primeiro teórico, que traz estudos sobre literatura, televisão e adaptações; o segundo, o qual estuda os paratextos; e o terceiro, o qual estuda a transposição do romance escrito para a televisão. Para tanto, utilizamos como aparato teórico estudiosos como Linda Hutcheon, Ana Balogh e Gerard Genette.

The research will be carried out according to propositions put forward by the Discourse Analysis. More specifically, we will follow that which Dominique Maingueneau theorizes as regards the notions of ethos and literature as a discourse. However, we are not going to limit ourselves to only one theoretical approach: the Bakhtinian thought will also make itself constantly present during our discussions. Through the conciliation of linguistics and literature and the study of the dichotomy East/West, we will verify the main role that vernacular languages play, as a means of verbalization of linguistic signs, in the development of a variety of different (as well as familiar) ethé in both hemispheres, and, eventually, how these ethé, on the other hand, reveal themselves through discourses in different social contexts. Following such discussions about the importance of the linguistic sign to the rational thought and the differences regarding axiological orientations between the eastern and western societies, our final chapter will be dedicated to the study of both a short story by the Japanese author Natsume Soseki and a novel by the Brazilian writer Adriana Lisboa, so as to illustrate the theory proposed and further expand our reflections. / O presente trabalho visa comparar as culturas ocidentais, dentre as quais elegemos como foco especificamente a brasileira, com as culturas orientais, representadas aqui pela japonesa. O estudo será desenvolvido a partir das perspectivas da Análise do Discurso, em especial a partir das teorias de Dominique Maingueneau, quanto às noções de ethos e literatura como discurso. Contudo, não limitar-nos-emos a apenas uma vertente teórica: também o pensamento bakhtiniano perpassará constantemente as nossas reflexões. Conciliando linguística e literatura e tendo sempre em mente a dicotomia Ocidente/Oriente, verificaremos o papel central que as línguas vernaculares exercem, enquanto instrumentos de verbalização de signos, no desenvolvimento de ethé bastante distintos (ainda que ao mesmo tempo também familiares) nos dois hemisférios, bem como, por outro lado e de forma circular, a maneira como tais ethé revelam-se discursivamente considerando-se os diferentes contextos sociais. Após explicitarmos a importância do signo linguístico para o pensamento racional e discutirmos os quadros axiológicos representativos do Ocidente e do Oriente, lançaremos mão, no capítulo final, de um conto do escritor japonês Natsume Soseki e de um romance brasileiro da carioca Adriana Lisboa para ilustrar na prática a teoria aventada e expandir nossas reflexões.

Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro / No romance A defesa Lujin, de Vladimir Nabokov, publicado em russo em 1930, o texto procura levar o leitor a adotar processos mentais similares ao de um jogador de xadrez e de um esquizofrênico, características do personagem-título do romance. Delineiam-se as expectativas e circunstâncias de um ser de papel que se vê jogando um xadrez em que também é peça e traçam-se paralelos com as expectativas e circunstâncias do leitor perante esse texto literário. O prefácio de Nabokov à edição em inglês de 1964 é tomado como indício de um leitor e um autor implícitos que ele procura moldar. Para análise dos elementos textuais e níveis de abstração mental envolvidos, recorre-se à estética da recepção de Wolfgang Iser e a diversas ideias do psiquiatra e etnólogo Gregory Bateson, entre elas o conceito de duplo vínculo, com atenção às distinções entre mapa/território e play/game. Um duplo duplo vínculo é perpetrado na interação leitor-texto: 1) o leitor é convidado a sentir empatia pela situação do personagem Lujin e a considerá-lo lúcido e louco ao mesmo tempo; e 2) o leitor é colocado como uma instância pseudo-transcendental incapaz de comunicação com a instância inferior (Lujin), gerando uma angústia diretamente relacionável ao seu envolvimento com a ficção, replicando de certa forma a loucura de Lujin. A sinestesia do personagem Lujin é identificada como um dos elementos do texto capaz de recriar a experiência de jogar xadrez até para quem não aprecia o jogo. Analisa-se a conexão entre a esquizofrenia ficcional do personagem Lujin e a visão batesoniana do alcoolismo / In Vladimir Nabokovs novel, The Luzhin Defense, published in Russian in 1930, the text beckons the reader on to adopt mental processes similar to a chess players and a schizophrenic persons both traits of the novels title character. This character sees himself both as player and piece of an ongoing game of chess; his expectations and predicaments are traced in parallel to the readers own as he or she navigates the text. Nabokovs preface to the 1964 English edition is taken as an indication that he tries to shape both an implicit reader and an implicit author. In order to analyze the elements of the text and degrees of mental abstraction involved in this, we refer to Wolfgang Isers reader-response theory and also many of psychiatrist and ethnologist Gregory Batesons ideas, such as the double bind, with special regard to map vs. territory and play vs. game distinctions. A double double bind is built within the reader-text interplay as follows: 1) the reader is invited to feel empathy for Luzhins predicament and to regard him at once as sane and insane; and 2) the reader is posited as a pseudo-transcendental instance unable to communicate with his nether instance (Luzhin) in such a way that it brews a feeling of anxiety directly relatable to his or her engagement in the work of fiction, reproducing, in a way, Luzhins madness. Luzhins synesthesia is identified as one of the text elements with the ability to recreate the chess-playing experience even to readers who are not fond of the game. The connection between Luzhins fictional schizophrenia and Batesons views on alcoholism is analyzed
