Oliva, Alfredo Santos. January 2005 (has links)
Abstract: This dissertation, which treats the Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus (Church of the Universal Reign of God), fits into the French tradition of historiography of culture, giving special attention to the influence of Michel Foucault on this line of thought. More especially, the work focuses on the way in which the leadership of the I.U.R.D. constructs its discourse about the Devil. Chronologically, the research is limited by the founding of the I.U.R.D. (1977), and by the year in which the research was completed (2005). The questions that direct the execution of this investigation and the arguments of the dissertion are the following: 1) How does the I.U.R.D.'s discourse about the Devil stand in continuity and/or discontinuity with the history of Christianity? 2) How is the I.U.R.D.'s discourse about the Devil configured internally? 3) How does the discourse about the Devil in Bishop Macedo's church relate to other contemporary religious discourses in Brazil? / Doutor

O demônio interior em Grande Sertão : veredas

Andrade, Francisco Gomes de 25 March 2011 (has links)
The present dissertation had aimed to analyze the concept of devil in the novel: Grande sertão: veredas (1956), by Guimarães Rosa. It was attempted to verify the cultural traces in the process of demonification, accomplishing a historic-cultural and literary study, from the Christian tradition until the contemporaneity, establishing a correlation with the previously mentioned novel. In it, we observed Satan s infernal character, in an obsessing manner, as the mind s representative restricted to the colective imaginative of bachlands. In the author and in Riobaldo, the narrator, both we notice a new perspective concerning the idea of inner devil symbolizing the personification of evil linked to the human condition. In this direction, I unleash the subject from demonological creeds, in the status of free spirit, it seems to become autonomous, as the possessor of its own actions and the detainer of its own fate.

A luzinha dividida: violência e trauma em \"Grande sertão: Veredas\" / Violence and trauma in The Devil to Pay in the Backlands

Giselle Madureira Bueno 26 February 2007 (has links)
This piece of work is a reflection on Grande Sertão: Veredas by João Guimarães Rosa (The Devil to Pay in the Backlands). Firstly, focusing on violence subject we approach the ethical, religious and intellectual enquiries of the old aged Riobaldo into this matter and its association with evil, according to the way he plots it on the initial tales of the book. Significance is given to the enquiries about the causes and the reasons of violence itself and the speculation about the Quelemenian doctrine (from the book character Quelemém) and its agreements and disagreements with the author´s view. Secondly, we study the jagunços and commanders relation to the code of honour, taking into account several dualities: for instance, tradition/invention, liberty/fatality. Subsequently, we discuss the Urutu-Branco´s authoritarian leadership, result, at the same time, of an absent and despotic will, and surrounded by aporias which puzzle narrator´s attempts of giving himself reasons to live, evaluating gains and losses and asserting his own redemption. Finally, we introduce the concept of trauma and we experiment its limits and fertility to think of the ambiguous character of violence on Grande Sertão: Veredas: on some occasions, acknowledgeable and representable; on other occasions, so bewildering that those possibilities become melancholically smaller. Precisely at this point, we also concentrate comments on violence and narrative form.

Honorius Augustodunensis e O Elucidarium : um estudo sobre a reforma, o diabo e o fim dos tempos / Honorius Augustodunensis and the Elucidarium: a study on the reform, the devil and the end of time between the end of times of the eleventh century and the beginning of the XII

João Rafael Chio Serra Carvalho 30 March 2009 (has links)
The goal of the present research is to understand the development of some of the most important representations of medieval mentality, namely: the representation of the devil, the conceptions of the end of times and the behavioral ethos formulated by the Ecclesiastic Reform. Precisely we intend to trace through Honorius Augustodunensis Elucidarium a picture of some of the most important aspects of medieval ethos and thought. The choice of the Elucidarium is due to its scope as well as its simplicity. This treaty, a Summa Totius Theologiae, is an important window to understand medieval mentality, for it shows in a simple manner all major concerns of a medieval intellectual towards the formation of a reformed clergy as well as to all laity. More than pursuing a different bias or even discussing some lesser issues it is the duty of he who whishes to bring light upon the matter a change of focus. What we intend with this present study is to understand how the dogmatic ideals of the ecclesiastic pole of society interweave with those of the lay pole. Thus, performing the pendular course, in between several varieties of a composite culture. Its pursuing this objective that we thoroughly analyze the Elucidarium to hear its silences, to understand what it doesnt say through a systemic analysis of its discourse and its themes, thus recovering, like a detective, through its evidences a clearer and broader conception of medieval society.

This dissertation aims to study one of the most important entities of the Western imagination, the Devil, such as it is presented in the works of the writer Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis. For this purpose, we set to perform a reading of the following stories: “Adão e Eva”, “A igreja do Diabo” and “O sermão do Diabo”, in which the Devil appears explicitly as a character, and thus we shall make clear the way in which it has been appropriated by Machadian literature. In “Adão e Eva” we shall demonstrate how Machado de Assis has reinterpreted the Devil’s role in the creation of humankind. In the story “A igreja do Diabo” we shall delineate how the author, through the Devil as a character, criticizes religious institutions. Finally, in the story “O sermão do Diabo”, our purpose is to demonstrate that Machado de Assis, through the Devil as a character, proposes an ironical criticism of nineteenth century society, which had sold its soul to diabolic capital.

As investigações visam compreender as dúvidas e inquietações, que sempre perpassam o pensamento deste sujeito, considerado o representante universal do “homem humano”. / The present thesis aims to investigate the many religious manifestations shown by the   character-narrator Riobaldo, as well as his “unusual” religious views, in the novel The Devil to Pay in the Backlands, by João Guimarães Rosa. The research focuses on a psycho-religious analysis of the protagonist’s lines and of some symbolic episodes of the narrative. The investigations intend to comprehend the doubts and unrests that are always in this subject’s thoughts, considering the universal representative of the “human man”. The psychoanalytical theoretical grounds of Freud, Lacan, Ana-Maria Rizzuto as well as some of their followers support the narrator’s therapeutical practice of narrating his life. Already as an elderly and resting in his hammock, he needs to talk as a way of understanding himself, overcoming his difficulties and “crossing the ghosts” of his existence. His religious views, just like his psyche, and the forms of understanding the world have many sides, which no religion can fully satisfy. But it is through love and prayer that he tries to comprehend reality, for he considers religion as a “thing of the heart”, and his lonely and powerless condition is what makes him believe in God.

The Debate over the Corporeality of Demons in England, c. 1670-1700

Patterson, Patrick 08 1900 (has links)
According to Walter Stephens, witch-theorists in the fifteenth century developed the witchcraft belief of demon copulation in order to prove the existence of demons and therefore the existence of God. In England, during the mid-seventeenth century, Cartesian and materialist philosophies spread. These new philosophies stated there was nothing in the world but corporeal substances, and these substances had to conform to natural law. This, the philosophers argued, meant witchcraft was impossible. Certain other philosophers believed a denial of any incorporeal substance would lead to atheism, and so used witchcraft as proof of incorporeal spirits to refute what they felt was a growing atheism in the world. By examining this debate we can better understand the decline of witchcraft. This debate between corporeal and incorporeal was part of the larger debate over the existence of witchcraft. It occurred at a time in England when the persecution of witches was declining. Using witchcraft as proof of incorporeal substances was one of the last uses of witchcraft before it disappeared as a valid belief. Therefore, a better understanding of this debate adds to a better understanding of witchcraft during its decline.

The research takes into consideration the context in which the movie ?Black God, White Devil? was created, its esthetic and discursive basis, its proposal for a collective popular memory revival focusing on the facts intrinsic to life in Canudos backlands, especially the canga?o (social banditry) and messianism and the clash the movie shows between the people?s version about these facts and the version found in official history books. It discusses how the speakability and visibility of an insular , mythical and sacralized sert?o as the epicenter of a national identity and liberating revolt found in ?Black God, White Devil? appear in the movies ??rido Movie? and ?Perfumed Ball? in a roundabout way, which show asert?o and a sertanejo torn between the dialogue with tradition and post-modernity.

Ink / Ink

Vomelová, Lenka Unknown Date (has links)
-ink- ink is a small independent publishing house, that is aiming to publish student-written literature with graphic design and illustrations made by young designers and artists. Main goal of the publishing house is to support, execute and spread projects of young, not yet estabilished authors and artists and thus develop the contemporary art scene. The visual identity of the publishing house is left open, it is going to be created in time by the books that are going to be published by ink. The logo is often used as a background to posters, or a stamp over photographs. I'm letting the content to speak for it's brand, not the logo. I created business cards, bookmarks, a stamp, wrapping papers that are used for parcels as well as a background for posters, and stickers. Novel Devil Novel Devil is a first book published by ink. Author of the book is Jan Smutný, recent graduate of Faculty of Fine arts in Brno. Illustration and the overall design of the book are made by me. The design is inspired by gothic books written in textura or bastarda and illustrated with woodcuts. My aim was to create a book clearly referencing this visuality, but not a „retro“ or a historicist book. I tried to create a classical book with a modern twist. That's why I chose new, modern typefaces Enigma and Lapture and the illustrations are just vector lines. Because of the theme I work only with black and and background white colour. The book was published in 200 copies.
