The judicialization of school relations: an inquiry into the production of teachers.

Wellington Tiberio 02 May 2011 (has links)
Teachers, beyond their formation courses, are produced day-to-day by the way they experience being teachers, a process that takes place within the very operation of educational institutions. This operation is based on a series of rationalities which delineate teaching, thus establishing references for a way of thinking and making oneself as a teacher. In present-day educational reality the wide usage of terms such as security, risk management, need for protection, damage, vulnerability, judicialization, among others, points towards the existence of intensive investment along the lines of control and vigilance policies. The present work has carried out an analysis on the mechanisms of what has been considered here as a juridical economy which pervades schools and is refined at its daily dynamics. This economy has been approached in its connections with the urgence for a search for welfare and happiness, one of the main governmental strategies of contemporary individuals. Within educational institutions this juridical economy produces subjects and a mode of relating to life. Therefore it produces important effects which we have tried to denature by approaching them from the viewpoint of the strategies of power. The main references used were the works of Michel Foucault (1926-1984) on relations of power and technologies for the production of subjects, having as a point of condensation his concept of governmentality. By entering the game of truth involving school education we have attempted to contribute in a particular manner towards hindering some of the effects of power that true discourses produce on education, school, teachers etc. Besides a mere negative action, such an initiative might also be understood as a way to confront a suffocating situation where the excess of certainties hampers the action of thought. This situation occurs often in current school education as it assumes the form of a positive action that produces gaps, breaches and holes. One important consideration on what has been analyzed: in schools, instead of life forms strengthened by confrontations at the ethical sphere, what has been under production is life forms weakened by the submission to normative need and to the plots indispensable to selfprotection. This movement forms the basis of a process that narrows political action down to ensuring formality and individual convenience. Although without any claim to clarification, we have focused on inciting reflective thought, where what is at stake is courage.

Dahl, Johanna, Frej, Christine January 2019 (has links)
Background: Multiple sclerosis is a chronic neurological disease from which twice as many women than men suffer. The disease causes various symptoms that mean a great change for the person therefore, it is important that the nurse has the skills necessary to provide relevant nursing care. Purpose: To describe women's experience of living with multiple sclerosis. Method: A literature review with a qualitative approach was conducted to answer the purpose. Searches were made in the databases Cinahl, Medline and PsycInfo. Relevant articles were quality audited and 12 articles analyzed according to Friberg's five-step analysis. Results: Women with multiple sclerosis experienced a change of identity and a change of life situation. The disease created obstacles and limitations that affected everyday life and concerns about how the disease would develop in the future. Healthcare professionals played an important role in facilitating everyday life and reducing stress in women. The information about the illness that the health care provider gave was important in helping the women. Conclusion: Multiple sclerosis affects women's everyday lives where changed identity and changed life situation are common experiences in multiple sclerosis. If the nurse has a person-centered approach at work, it can provide security for the person.

Locus of identity : public infrastructure that forms loci for cultural identity

Pieterse, Justine 07 December 2012 (has links)
This dissertation investigates the role of architecture in the emergence of community identity with specific reference to the spontaneous surfacing and expansion of informal settlements within the South African context and the need for fundamental public service infrastructure provision. The aim is to understand and illustrate the significance of contextual infrastructure provision as catalyst in the emergence of social and cultural networks. In analysing the current innovative survival strategies induced by the community themselves, a theoretical premise will be established regarding the implications of an "African urbanist" approach to infrastructure and means of applying it in design. The current rate of urbanization within the South African context has resulted in several human settlements expanding organically, attempting to meet the increasing housing demands whilst neglecting the provision of platforms for various interwoven layers of urban fabric and public services. These platforms are integral in the shaping of cultural and community identity. The intent of the proposal is to provide an interface between the public and the built fabric that serves the needs of, as well as enhances the quotidian praxis within the Eastern Mamelodi precinct. The proposal intends to disclose an existing cultural language and identity by establishing physical loci that host and exhibit quotidian social practices unique to Mamelodi. Through theoretical and contextual enquiry the study provides an understanding of the role as well as the necessity of infrastructure architecture manifested into an appropriate solution which will facilitate the corroboration of a unique cultural identity. / Dissertation MArch(Prof)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Architecture / MArch(Prof) / Unrestricted

Preschool teachers' perceptions of technology in everyday life in preschool : A qualitative study of how preschool teachers perceive the concept of technology in everyday life and their view of their competence within the concept.

Malmberg, Emmy, Rundström, Katrin January 2021 (has links)

Flashback som informationskälla i vardagen : En kvantitativ enkätstudie om svenska studenters användning av Flashback Forum i vardagliga informationssyften / Flashback as an everyday life information source : A quantitative survey study about the use of Flashback Forum for everyday life information purposes among Swedish students

Nilsson, Sofia January 2020 (has links)
The somewhat controversial Swedish online discussion forum Flashback Forum (Flashback) is used by a large part of the Swedish population and contains large amounts of information with a wide diversity regarding subjects. Flashback is unique, not least with its focus on freedom of speech, and is often considered unreliable and questionable. However, the large amount of information stored enable the use of the forum as a source of everyday information, given the fact that the user remain critical in their approach to the information retrieved. It seems reasonable to assume that students also use Flashback for this reason; and they can be assumed to have certain experiences regarding searching for information and judging the trustworthiness of found information. The purpose of this essay is therefore to study how Swedish students use Flashback to search for and access information, and how they relate to this information. To study this some concepts from Reijo Savolainen’s theory of everyday information practices has been used, in which he takes a social phenomenological perspective to everyday life information seeking (ELIS). These concepts are information source horizons, information fields and pathways, and stock of knowledge. For the method a survey was used, which was distributed online during March 2020 mainly in different student groups on Facebook. The results showed that a majority of the respondents use Flashback to search for and access everyday information, which was mainly related to current crimes and suspects. The majority of the respondents retained a critical approach to the information and used it mainly to still their curiosity about cases mentioned on news sites or papers. This study shows that Flashback can – and is – used by students to retrieve everyday information, mainly because the sought for information is not available, or not openly available, elsewhere. This study also shows that despite Flashback’s questionable reliability, the nature of the forum, and the fact that most respondents had a relatively bad attitude towards the forum, Flashback has a great potential as a source for everyday information of minor importance, and for taking part of others’ experiences.

Fišerová, Sylvie January 2009 (has links)
The diploma thesis called "Domestication of Television News: Everyday Social Use of Television News in the Contemporary Family Environment" deals with the question of how and why are the evening news used in the family environment. It informs about the key studies of social use of media, e.g. the typology of social use or role of gender in the attitude to media, and it deals with the question of relation of children and media. Further part of work is devoted to the news, its characteristics and the possible social use of this format by specific members of the family. These concepts are consequently used as tools for the research itself. The research of social use of the evenenig news is carried out with the help of qualitative grounded theory. In the empirical part the author arrives to the following conclusions: the main motivation for watching news is informative use, though at the same time it is used as a coulisse to other activities, most often bathing children and preparing or eating dinner. The most widespreaded type of watching news might be described as "monitoring", when television news viewing is secondary to some other primary activity....
