This dissertation approaches the relationship between insecurity imaginaries and transformations of everyday life and the urban landscape in the cities of Pelotas and Rio Grande - RS. Using a qualitative approach that fits the so-called case study design and combines several strategies and techniques of data collection from an ethnographic perspective, e.g. systematic observation, questionnaire and
unstructured interviews, this research analyzes the re-significances of social imaginaries that come from the culture of fear and surveillance to account, on the one hand, of the changes in daily life and, consequently, in the sociability in those cities; and, on the other hand, the incorporation of securitization dispositives into the urban landscape. These transformations take place within the scope of private security that reflects, at the same time as it structures the meanings that make up the imaginaries,
based on the valuations and moralities that accompany the consumption dynamics of these dispositives, as a strategy that individuals use to protect themselves and take care. Finally, it offers considerations that based on a focus centered on the symbolic and material expressions observed in the cities of Pelotas and Rio Grande, serve to theorize and leave open questions about the issue of insecurity and contemporary society.

This dissertation analyzes the interaction dynamics among users of Portuguese Wikipedia online environment. It evaluates how these internal relationships build the biggest online encyclopedia and also how background communications interfere on the crowdsourcing content gathering. Through the studies of several cases collection, it became possible to explore consistently the almost imperceptible universe of the wikipedians. The “talk” tabs turned out as fertile fields of research, analysis, info collection and also a starting point to better comprehend the intellectual processes behind the public texts, which sometimes a distract reader may not notice. It is important to stress that all background data gathered for this research are available for any Wikipedia user to learn. It is just a matter of knowing where to find it. It is also possible to analyze the relation between the editors and the content as well as the approach to the different subject articles. As well, this paper investigates the content building through Agnes Heller's Everyday Life concept. The dichotomy between the encyclopedic construction as an Everyday suspension activity which looks after the human knowledge spread. By the other hand, the same activity merges on the Everyday flow, once lots of information added come from the quotidian elements as news and journalistic articles. Starting at this point of view, it is possible to make connections about the inner conflicts among users, cooperation, struggles, vandalism and many other common issues in a Wikipedia volunteer's life

This dissertation analyses two documentaries - "Gendernauts, a march towards changing identities" (Monika Treut, 1999) and "Wearing necktie and red nail" (Miriam Chnaiderman, 2014) - within the scope of discussing how identity of gender and sexuality are uttered in these works. This study is delimited on a conception of identity as a continuing change as well as the gender as a historical, cultural and political construction. Such view is supported particularly by both the feminist studies and the queer theory which stands up for the overcoming of the binary heterosexual/homosexual standardization. The work considers the different points of view of the documentaries, taking into consideration historical moments of their production. In Treut´s movie we highlight the militant aspect of the work when dealing with everyday life of a community of transgenders who live in San Francisco (USA), having this city an important role in the cause that stands up for the abject bodies. However in Chnaiderman movie, we sought to understand how sexuality and gender present themselves in their multiplicity, showing attire as the main element of transgression. Therefore, we numbered some inquiries which go through this research: how these different activisms are built in the two productions, keeping the perspective of a militancy designed by the LGBT (Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) organizations, having in vieview the construction and consolidation of social rights for this group over fifteen years, the gap between the two productions? Which articulation - be it to a greater or lesser degree - with everyday life, towards recognizing in this "space of experience and contact" a path for the consolidation of the purposes of the activism? What are the particular time marks of the movies that express the queer theory in dialogue? Eventually, what ethical issues raise such works when they expose individuals historically prejudiced? Seeking to answer to these and other close questions means for this research to lead to the need of breaking out the invisibility which still leaves marks on those who have opted for transsexualism and/or other forms of sexual and gender identity and, at the same time, recognize through the media, most particularly through the nonfiction audiovisual, a powerful and significant locus in the scenery of the contemporaneous communication

The Netflix Experience : Reshaping the Creative Process: Cultural Co-Production of Content: A user-focus approach to recommendation algorithmsVarela, Daniela Renee January 2017 (has links)
This project proposes a user-focused approach to study the algorithm logic of on-demand apps, using Netflix as a case study. The main research interest is the perception that the user has about the suggestion and recommendation logic of Netflix. In order to gather the information, a walkthrough method on Netflix was applied as well as personal, in-depth think aloud interviews were carried out. The sample consisted on a selection of heavy users, millennials ex-pats living in Singapore and working in the creative industry to get specific insights on their relationship with the algorithm. To analyze the gathered material, qualitative content analysis was carried out. This kind of study is important within today’s contemporary media environment to have integral approach to users perceptions instead of just analytical figures and numbers. The theoretical context used to enlight some of the conclusions discussed on this research were based on the study of media in everyday life, global cultural industry studies, as well as algorithm culture and the science and technology studies. How algorithms are perceived have major repercussions not only on on-demand apps, technology business models or entertainment industry but also an intense influence on the way people consume content. Re-thinking the user as a co-producer of information and knowledge, considering some of the implications this phenomenon might have on the creative industry and how that affects on our daily life are some of the issues this research elaborated on. It can be said that the selected sample appreciates the suggestion logics and it has multiple functionalities: recommendation, curation, entertainment, companionship and leisure. Netflix Originals are very well validated; being one of the main attractions of the app. Interface, functionality and features are also items that the sample positively highlights. The accuracy perception of the algorithm is good, although low when compared to other countries where the sample used the app. The same applies to the amount of content and titles available, being these last two, issues that Netflix could improve. This research was conducted for 8 months, from October 2016 to May 2017, for Sodertorn University – Stockholm, Sweden, with the guidance and support of Associate Professor Anne Kaun.

Ihoatoopikkolasten ja heidän perheidensä arki:etnografinen tutkimus perheen arjen kokemuksista ja elämänlaadustaSkarp, E. (Eija) 13 September 2005 (has links)
Abstract
The purpose of the study was to get knowledge of everyday life of children (aged 0–10 years) with atopic dermatitis and their families. An ethnographic approach was used. Different data sets were collected by interviewing, observing and presenting questionnaires. The interviews (n = 24) and observations (n = 24) of the families (n = 7) took place at their homes. Children aged 5–10 years (n = 80), assisted by their parents, filled in a quality of life questionnaire. In the case of children younger than 5 years (n = 174) and families (n = 254), the quality of life questionnaire was filled in by the parents. The severity of atopic dermatitis of each participating child (n = 254) was evaluated by a physician. The professional perspective was introduced into the study in the form of discussions between dermatological nurses and dermatologists (n = 4).
Triangulation of data, methods and analyses was performed. The quantitative data were analyzed by means of SPSS 11.5 for Windows. Categorical and ordinal variable were presented as frequency and percentage distributions, and medians, quartiles and arithmetic means were quoted. The interrelations between variables were presented as cross-tabulations, and Khi square test was used. The interviews were analyzed by methods of data-based content analysis.
The more severe the child's atopic dermatitis was, the more the quality of life of the child and the family was impaired. The quality of life of the children was better than the quality of life of the families. The impact of the atopic dermatitis to the quality of life of the children was moderate and of the family severe. The children's quality of life was impaired most by itching and scratching. The need to participate in the treatment of the children's skin problems was the most important single factor that impaired the families' quality of life. The child's severe, long-term dermatitis and its treatment on a day-to-day basis were described as a desperate process. The knowledge that eczema is alleviated as the child grows older gave the families hope and helped them to cope. The avoidance of various foods and allergens and the opportunities to try different treatments raised hopes about the alleviation of eczema. On the other hand, however, these trials easily turned into desperate efforts to try any available alternative, which often wore out the mother or the whole family. Families did not receive adequate counselling or support when their quality of life was seriously compromised. The results of the study can be used when developing the public health care services to better meet the needs of families. / Tiivistelmä
Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on saada tietoa ihoatoopikkolasten (0–10 vuotta) ja heidän perheidensä arjesta. Tutkimuksen lähestymistapa on etnografinen.
Kvantitatiivinen aineisto analysoidaan SPSS 11.5 for Windows -ohjelmalla.

Everyday functioning in six year-old children born preterm : From a child perspective towards the child's perspectiveAndersson, Anna Karin January 2017 (has links)
The overall aim of the thesis was to explore everyday functioning in six year-old children born preterm, from the children’s perspectives and from their parents’ perspectives. The relation between everyday functioning and neonatal risk factors, behavioural characteristics was studied with descriptive and correlational statistics, ANOVA and multiple linear regression (I). Patterns of everyday functioning were explored in a cluster analysis following a person-oriented approach (II). In a mixed method approach, the children’s and their parents’ perceptions on children’s competence in everyday activities were explored with a pictorial instrument and analysed with descriptive statistics and qualitative content analysis (III). The children’s perceptions of meaningful everyday life situations were explored in a photo voice study, analysed with qualitative content analysis. In total, 144 children born preterm and 222 children born at term and their parents were involved. The results indicated that from the parents’ perspective most children born preterm and full-term were perceived with strong everyday functioning featuring strong motor, process and communication skills, a positive interaction pattern and low levels of behaviour problems. As a group, the children born very preterm were perceived weaker in their everyday functioning than the full-term group but the pattern of performance skills, interaction and behaviour varied similar to that of children born full-term. Further, it was found that preterm birth was not the main predictor, instead hyperactivity had most influence on everyday functioning. Moreover, the children born preterm perceived themselves to be overall strong performers of everyday activities. They wanted to be active and do things and for that they wanted to have skills and significant others i.e. siblings, parents, friends and pets to interact with and to feel safe and loved. Further, the children born preterm expressed a will to develop, improve and gain new skills and to have more opportunities to do meaningful things. In conclusion, the results in this thesis indicate that young children born preterm are able to reflect on their everyday functioning, and express needs and desires for their participation in meaningful everyday life situations. Moreover, preterm birth is not the sole predictor of everyday functioning more critical is the interaction of individual, behavioural and contextual factors.

Veilleur 2.0 : d'un processus professionnel à une activité ordinaire / Watchmen 2.0 : from a professional process to an ordinary activityCanet, Florence 21 November 2016 (has links)
Monitoring practice is a learning object whose conceptualization is still unstable in information science. Mainly studied in management science in the context of professional practices, studies on monitoring practices in everyday life seeking situations, (in a personal and non-professional approach), or « amateur » practices remains limited to date. Our research focuses on the current practice of online monitoring and seeks to empirically demonstrate the emergence of « amateur » practices and everyday life seeking practices. Our central hypothesis is that the professional practice in the iterative and continuous monitoring of the environment, has found a place in everyday information practices of Internet users. Two central issues concern us: who are the current watchmen and what are their motivations. Indeed, our work is based on two structural axes: monitoring as an informational practice and as an amateur watchmen practice. Our methodology is based on a corpus of semi-structured interviews with seventeen watchmen professionals and seventeen watchmen amateur between 2012 and 2014. Our analysis of thematic content is structured around two focal points : professional watchmen versus amateur watchmen, and professional monitoring versus everyday life monitoring. Our results show a diversification of online intelligence practices, information needs singular characteristics, the use of confidence criterion for the selection of human sources, and practice conducive to sérendipiennes discoveries. In addition and more focused on everyday life seeking practices, we note first, three major informational reasons : an easiest and constant collect of information, a way to capitalize information, and a way of learning, and secondly an expressive dimension, through the setting visibility of its interests and in the act of sharing.

What Peace? Grasping the Empirical Realities of Peace(s) in Post-war MitrovicaSegall, Sandra January 2018 (has links)
Urban peacebuilding has proved particularly challenging in cities contested on grounds of state legitimacy where group identities are salient. Ever since the end of the Kosovo War in 1999, the city of Mitrovica has remained divided and been further polarized by outbreaks of violence, post-war politics, and strained inter-group relations. This single case study describes and conceptualizes the empirical realities of peace in the post-war city by applying the Peace Triangle as an analytical tool for understanding the quality and characteristics of the peace that prevails beyond the cessation of large-scale violence. The author builds on the conceptual model by arguing that a more multifaceted and peace-grounded analysis of peace is necessary. The research paper concludes by suggesting an altered analytical model that may yield a more nuanced understanding of peace(s) by encompassing aspects grounded in peace-conducive activities.
