A patient with the diagnosis of a "factituous disorder": a phenomenological investigation

In this dissertation, the author provides an account of his therapeutic interaction and experience, as an intern clinical psychologist, in working with a patient in psychotherapy who was eventually diagnosed with a “factitious disorder”. This study descriptively addresses how the therapeutic interaction impacted upon the therapist’s thinking of the process both diagnostically and in terms of therapeutic goals. This study consists of a single case, qualitative research design. It concerns the interactions and experiences of the therapist with a specific patient (diagnosed with a factitious disorder) in the context of a multidisciplinary academic hospital setting. The study aims to be predominantly descriptive of this therapy, and as such employs the psychological phenomenological method of Giorgi (1985) in order to provide a specific description of the situated structure of the therapy. As such, this study is able to contribute to the sparse psychological and therapeutic information available on factitious disorders. There are few detailed accounts of actual therapeutic interactions – specifically from a psychological perspective – for patients diagnosed with factitious disorders. The specific description of the situated structure of the therapy is also compared to the available literature on factitious disorders. Although the aim of this study was not evaluative in nature, the author does provide some tentative comments on the aetiology and therapeutic considerations for factitious disorders – with regards to this particular case. The author suggests a strong link to personality and character deficits underlying factitious behaviour. The author further suggests the importance of acknowledging the “sick role”; allowing for “face-saving” strategies; providing consistency (on behalf of the therapist); and the setting of rigid, overt, therapeutic boundaries in the psychotherapeutic treatment of factitious disorders. / Dissertation (MA (Clinical Psychology))--University of Pretoria, 2005. / Psychology / unrestricted

The suicide of a client : an intern psychologist’s experience

In this dissertation the author provides an account of the emotional experience of one clinical psychology intern whose client had committed suicide. This study describes the impact on the intern both as an individual and as a professional in the field of psychology. The impact on the intern as an individual is studied in terms of the coping mechanisms used as well as the changes that occurred in her views of death and suicide. The impact on the intern as a professional is studied in terms of her interactions with patients, how she addresses the topic of suicide within therapy, and the eventual changes that she experienced as therapist. The study uses a single case qualitative research design. It concerns the experiences of a specific intern clinical psychologist within the context of a multidisciplinary academic hospital setting. The study is predominantly descriptive in nature, and as such employs the phenomenological method of Giorgi (1985) to provide a specific description of the experiences of the intern psychologist. Through this, the study aims to add to the limited descriptive and qualitative information available on the experiences of therapists whose clients commit suicide. The information available on this topic is mostly quantative in nature, providing statistical data on the emotions and experiences of therapists. The description of the experiences is also compared to the existing information on the topic. As the aim of this study is descriptive in nature, it will not provide any fixed theory on the subject. It does illustrate the experiences of one intern and actively studies the correlation of these experiences with existing data. Percepção climática e conforto térmico: contribuição ao estudo interdisciplinar dos aspectos objetivos e subjetivos do clima em Palmas, TO

A pesquisa tem como objeto de investigação a percepção climática, inserido o conceito de clima caracterizado como o ritmo de atuação dos tipos de tempo, e o conforto térmico. Os estudos mais conhecidos em conforto térmico quantificam os efeitos físicos e fisiológicos da ambiência atmosférica nas pessoas, baseados em índices, deixando lacunas no conhecimento tanto da dinâmica do clima, na qual se inserem as variáveis ambientais, como na subjetividade do fenômeno para o entendimento dessa realidade. Considerando essa problemática, a presente pesquisa questiona a insuficiência dos referidos índices por um viés exclusivamente positivista para o entendimento da percepção climática e do conforto térmico, especialmente em climas quentes como o de Palmas, Tocantins. No intuito de conhecer as essências do clima e do conforto térmico enquanto fenômenos vividos, a tese tem como objetivo contribuir com o entendimento de tais temas de forma interdisciplinar, enfocando de modo complementar seus aspectos objetivos e subjetivos. Para isso, a metodologia adotada compreendeu quatro etapas: (1) a análise rítmica anual em dois anos-padrão selecionados, um de padrão confortável e um de padrão desconfortável, 1997 e 2013, respectivamente, em conjunção com o Discomfort Index (DIT), proposto por Thom (1959); (2) a análise rítmica episódica, abarcando três episódios entre os anos 2015 e 2016, em conjunção com os índices de conforto PET e UTCI, aplicada em área externa na cidade; (3) a avaliação quali-quantitativa de dados pessoais dos moradores sobre sua percepção térmica, coletados por meio de questionários durante estes mesmos episódios; (4) e a análise dos dados subjetivos utilizando aplicação empírica do método fenomenológico, com as orientações operacionais de Giorgi (2012a). A tese procurou fornecer algumas contribuições metodológicas principais: um enfoque interdisciplinar da análise rítmica do clima (e do microclima medido in loco) com os índices de conforto térmico; uma abordagem interrelacional entre as análises climáticas e a percepção das pessoas sobre o clima e o conforto térmico, envolvendo seus aspectos objetivos e subjetivos; e o uso inédito de uma abordagem fenomenológica nos campos da climatologia e do conforto térmico. A dinâmica climática em Palmas demonstrou que a cidade apresenta altas temperaturas em todo o ano, com dois períodos distintos, chuvoso e seco, apresentando maior desconforto térmico na transição do período seco para o período chuvoso. Além disso, verificou-se que a cidade vem apresentando ampliação do desconforto térmico ao longo do período analisado (1995–2014). A avaliação quali-quantitativa apontou que as variáveis ligadas à experiência térmica, aos aspectos físico-fisiológicos e à experiência afetiva influenciaram na maioria das vezes parcialmente na percepção do conforto térmico das pessoas. A estrutura essencial revelada na análise fenomenológica demonstrou que o clima é somente mais um elemento em um vasto conjunto de aspectos naturais, sociais, econômicos, culturais etc., que interferem no bem-estar e na qualidade de vida dos sujeitos, e no seu conforto térmico, o que reforça a necessidade de uma abordagem menos parcial da realidade complexa da percepção climática. / The research has as its aim to investigate the climate perception, introduced the concept of climate characterized as the rhythm of the performance of the types of weather and thermal comfort. The better known studies on thermal comfort quantify the physical and physiological effects of the atmospheric ambience on people, based on indices, leaving gaps on the knowledge both in the climate dynamics, in which the environmental variables are inserted and in the phenomenon subjectivity for the understanding of this reality. Considering that issue, the present research enquires the insufficiency of the referred indices via an exclusively positivist bias for the comprehension of the climate perception and the thermal comfort, especially in warm climates like the one of Palmas, Tocantins, Brazil. With the purpose of learning about the essences of the climate and thermal comfort as lived phenomena, the thesis aims to contribute with the mastery of those themes in an interdisciplinary way, focusing their objective and subjective aspects in a complementary manner. To accomplish that, the method used complied four phases: (1) the annual rhythmic analysis in two selected standard-years, one of comfortable standard and one of uncomfortable standard, 1997 and 2013, respectively, in conjunction with the Discomfort Index (DIT), proposed by Thom (1959); (2) the episodic rhythmic analysis, involving three episodes within the years 2015 and 2016, in conjunction with the PET and UTCI comfort indices, applied in outer area of the city; (3) the quali-quantitative evaluation of personal data of the residents about their thermal perception, collected through questionnaires during those same episodes; (4) and the analysis of the subjective data utilizing empiric application of the phenomenological method, with the operational orientations of Giorgi (2012a). The thesis sought to provide some main methodological contributions: an interdisciplinary approach of the climate rhythmic analysis (and the microclimate measured in loco) with the thermal comfort indices; a inter-relational approach between the climate analyses and the people’s perception on the climate and thermal comfort, comprising their objective and subjective aspects; and the unprecedented use of a phenomenological focus on the climatology and thermal comfort. The climate dynamics in Palmas demonstrated that the city renders high temperatures throughout the year, with two distinct periods, rainy and dry, presenting greater thermal discomfort in the transition from the dry season to the rainy one. Furthermore, it was verified that the city has been presenting an expansion of the thermal comfort along the analyzed period (1995–2014). The quali-quantitative assessment pointed out that the variables linked to the thermal experience, to the physical-physiological aspects and to the affective experience most of the time influenced partially on the people’s thermal comfort perception. The essential structure unveiled in the phenomenological analysis showed that the climate is only one more element in a vast assembly of natural, social, economic and cultural aspects, which interfere on the well-being and the quality of life of the subjects and on their thermal comfort, what enhances the need of a less partial approach of the complex reality of the climate perception.

This research has the objective of investigate the individual experience throughout the psychotherapeutic process, considering its own perspective. The theoretical starting point is Gestalt-therapy and Phenomenology its methodological approach. This paper is divided into five parts. The first part outlines qualitative research and phenomenological method according to Amedeo Giorgi, briefly presenting Phenomenology and Qualitative Epistemology. The second, empirical part presents interviews with three clients who were submitted to more than six years of individual therapy and at least two years of group therapy. The interviews were focused on their experiences during the psychotherapeutic processes. In the third part, results are presented in categories, and, in the fourth part, the psychotherapeutic process in Gestalt-therapy is described, after a brief introduction on psychotherapy (in general) and, particularly, Gestalttherapy. Finally, a reflection on the research conducted follows, considering some questions and propositions. We conclude that psychotherapy was positively experienced by the interviewed clients, who after this process, were able to reach self-knowledge, discover the reason of their existence, recover their authenticity and encounter the other and themselves with respect and acceptance. They also developed their ability to dialogue, to live in the present moment, to re-signify un-ended situations, and, most of all, to establish healthier relationships. / Ainda existe a necessidade de aprofundamento do conhecimento acerca da contribuição da psicoterapia na constituição do indivíduo como sujeito, ator e autor de sua vida. Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo investigar a vivência do cliente no processo psicoterapêutico, de acordo com sua própria perspectiva. O ponto de partida teórico é a Gestalt-terapia, e a Fenomenologia, a sua abordagem metodológica. O trabalho divide-se em cinco partes. A primeira destaca a pesquisa qualitativa e aborda o método fenomenológico, segundo as formulações de Amedeo Giorgi, apresentando brevemente a Fenomenologia e a Epistemologia Qualitativa. A segunda parte momento empírico é constituída de entrevistas abertas com três clientes que realizaram mais de seis anos de terapia individual e pelo menos dois anos de terapia de grupo; as entrevistas focalizaram as vivências dos processos psicoterapêuticos dos clientes. Na terceira parte, são apresentados os resultados na forma de categorias, e, na quarta parte, descreve-se o processo psicoterapêutico em Gestaltterapia, após uma breve introdução sobre a psicoterapia (em geral) e a Gestalt-terapia (em particular). Finalmente, é feita uma reflexão sobre a pesquisa, com base em alguns questionamentos e proposições. Conclui-se que a psicoterapia foi vivenciada de uma maneira positiva pelos colaboradores e que, depois desse processo, eles conseguiram atingir um autoconhecimento, descobrir o sentido de suas existências, resgatar a autenticidade e encontrar o outro e a si mesmos com respeito e aceitação, além de desenvolverem suas habilidades de dialogar, de viver no momento presente, ressignificar situações inacabadas e, sobretudo, estabelecer relações mais saudáveis.

開放性、責任與對話—討論作為教育場域中實踐智慧的開展 / Openness, Responsibility, and Dialogue— “Discussion” as a factor in the development of practical wisdom in the educational field

「討論」對參與者在擴展知識面、增強理解力和判斷力各方面均能產生積極的作用;然而實務工作者發展出許多的討論操作策略,卻少有理論解釋的說明。更要緊的是,一旦「規定了討論就是對話」能否觸及教育場域中討論的實質經驗問題。準此,本論文研究目的為:(一)理解討論教學與教育實踐智慧的相關論述;(二)探索教育場域中討論的實質「經驗」問題;(三)闡釋教育場域中討論經驗的教育實踐意涵;(四)回應討論作為教育場域中實踐智慧開展的可能性;(五)援引理論向度提供實務操作之前瞻性。 本研究以現象學方法進行訪談與提取主題,首先給予討論經驗的一般性描述,再就主題的相關理論基礎進行論述呈現。後於探究教育場域中討論經驗所涉及的開放性、責任與對話三項主題而有以下六項發現:一、開放性具有「即興」的特質;二、討論場域中的成員透過說話構作現實性;三、討論場域中意義的「開放性」之所緣;四、討論場域中關於「責任」的“被看”與“看”;五、「遊戲概念」提供教育場域中的討論現象一種操作上的理論說明;六、釐清討論經驗的開放性、責任與對話三者的關係。 本研究結論包括:一、「有用性」的「無對象性」,需要實踐智之決斷;二、開放性、責任、對話三者需要實踐智之調和;三、討論的經驗是「朝向不確定的預先投身」或「朝向自身的可能性而投企」;四、對於討論場域中常見的「啞然、霎時無法回應」現象給出的一種解釋;五、討論作為教育實踐智慧的具體操作典型。最後研究建議則為:一、加入「語言-身體性」議題之綜合討論,作為後續研究之引線;二、進一步探究開放性、責任、對話三者在時間結構上的實踐意涵,或許可茲回應黑爾德指出實踐智所具有之實踐導向、反思判斷力及其來自「時間偶然性」與「互為主體性」兩項根本難題,給予一種參考路徑。本研究預期貢獻則著眼於闡述討論適可作為教育實踐智慧的具體操作典型,援引理論向度以提供討論實務操作之可能性、前瞻性。 / Having a discussion can play an active role in expanding the knowledge of participants and enhancing their understanding and judgment. However, many discussion-operating strategies have been developed yet a few theoretical interpretations have been made. What is more, whether the essential experience problems discussed in education field can be involved once “discussion is dialogue” is prescribed? Therefore, this study aims to: (I) understand and discuss the arguments relevant to teaching and educational Phrόnesis[practical wisdom]; (II) probe into essential experience problems discussed in the educational field; (III) interpret the implications of discussing educational practices to the educational field; (IV) respond to the possibility of considering “discussion” as a factor in the development of Phrόnesis in the educational field; (V) refer to the theory of dimension in providing insights for practical application. This study forms a discussion and summarizes the theme using the Phenomenological Method. First, it gives a general description of the discussion and proceeds to discuss and present the relevant theoretical basis for the theme. Later, it probes into three themes related to the discussion in the educational field; namely, openness, responsibility, and dialogue. The results summarized in six points are as follows: I. Openness implies “improvisation”; II. Participants in the discussion create reality through dialogue; III. The aspect of openness in a discussion; IV. To Discuss “being seen” and “seeing” in the concept of “responsibility”; V. The “play concept” provides a theoretical interpretation of the discussion in the educational field; VI. The need to clarify the relationship of openness, responsibility and dialogue in a discussion. The conclusions of the study are: I. “No-object nature” of “the availability” requires judgment and decision based on Phrόnesis; II. Openness, responsibility and dialogue demand the need for Phrόnesis; III. The discussion of experience is “the pre-projection towards unsure direction”, or “dedication into resoluteness towards the self-feasibility”; IV. An interpretation of the “inanity of immediate response” comes up frequently in the discussion; V. A discussion is perceived as a typical concrete model for educational Phrόnesis. Finally, this study recommends the following: I. Participate in a comprehensive discussion of “language-body”, as a basis for future research; II. Continue to explore the practical implications of openness, responsibility and dialogue to time structure, or promise to respond K. Held on his words that Phrόnesis has practical direction and reflective judgment, and respond to two difficult problems from “time contingency” and “inter-subjectivity”, to give a reference or approach. This study aims to contribute to the idea of “discussion” as a suitable and typical concrete model for educational Phrόnesis. It also refers to the theory of dimension to provide the feasibility and for practical application.

Christopher s manifestations can also be diagnosed as Asperger s Syndrome, according to DSM-IV-TR. The phenomenological method described by Giorgi was used to emerge the Christopher s being-with others phenomena, following a daseinsanalytical understanding based on the contributions of Martin Heidegger in his Zollikon Seminars. These seminars exposed Daseinsanalysis as an instrument able to understand healthy and sick existence, from appropriated concepts to human being. The research found out that Christopher get on with others predominantly in strangeness, seeing people many times as potently nocuous and seeking lonesomeness. The phenomena being-with others was demonstrated in Christopher s life, which suggests that this study confirms some of Heidegger s postulations. / Esta pesquisa teve por objetivo realizar uma compreensão daseinsanalítica do ser-no-mundo do adolescente Christopher, protagonista do romance O Estranho Caso do Cachorro Morto, explicitando as relações do personagem com as pessoas de seu mundo. O adolescente descrito no livro pode ser diagnosticado com Transtorno de Asperger, de acordo com critérios do DSM-IV-TR. Utilizou-se do método fenomenológico, conforme descrito por Giorgi, para realizar a emersão do fenômeno ser-com os outros do referido personagem, seguindo-se compreensão daseinsanalítica embasada nas contribuições do filósofo Martin Heidegger nos Seminários de Zollikon. Estes seminários visaram expor a Daseinsanalyse como instrumento capaz de compreender o existir sadio e o existir doente em geral a partir de concepções próprias à existência humana. Os principais resultados da análise apontam que Christopher relaciona-se com os outros predominantemente no modo da estranheza, enxergando as pessoas muitas vezes como potencialmente nocivas e buscando o isolamento. O fenômeno existencial ser-com foi concretamente demonstrado na vida do personagem, o que leva a pensar que em alguns momentos da análise o estudo ganhou um certo caráter de confirmação de postulações heideggerianas.

Abuso Sexual na Infância: uma Leitura Fenomenológica-Existencial através do Psicodiagnóstico Rorschach

We sought to understand how these children percieve human element in themselves and in interpersonal exchange; and detect whether there were psychic damage to their capacity of relating interpersonally. Such reading has revealed the need to tune the human and animal content codes to the experiences which were being told by the children, which motivated us to propose of questioning the current codes. The results showed that most of the group responses (46%) were regarding scary and aggressive characters. Offended characters or characters in physically or psychically painful situations accounted for 30% of the responses. Contents expressing positive and constructive views of the character were the least frequent reaching only 24%. Overall, 62% of the children reflected in the test the relation offender-victim. We conclude that most of the times the human and the relationships are most times embedded in negative connotations associated to violence and pain, confirming the presence of psychic harm; and that the Rorschach diagnosis is able to stimulate a projective speech in which the subject reveals symbolically real facts from his life story. / Este estudo realizou uma leitura qualitativa, fenomenológica-existencial, das respostas de conteúdo animal e humano fornecidas por 8 crianças vítimas de abuso sexual, submetidas aos estímulos das manchas do Psicodiagnóstico Rorschach. Buscou-se compreender como estas crianças percebem o humano em si e na convivência interpessoal; e detectar se havia danos psíquicos associados à capacidade de se relacionar interpessoalmente. Esta leitura revelou a necessidade de sintonizar a codificação destes conteúdos às experiências que estavam sendo comunicadas, o que nos motivou a propor um questionamento dos atuais códigos. Os resultados revelaram que a maioria das respostas do grupo (46%) se referiu à percepções de personagens agressivos e amedrontadores; personagens agredidos ou em situações de sofrimento físico ou psíquico representaram 30% das respostas; conteúdos que expressavam percepções positivas e construtivas dos personagens foram os menos freqüentes (24%); e 62% das crianças projetaram no teste a relação agressor-vítima. Concluiu-se que o humano e os relacionamentos são, em sua maioria, imbuídos de conotações negativas, relacionadas à violência e dor, confirmando a presença de dano psíquico; e que o Rorschach é capaz de estimular um discurso projetivo no qual o sujeito revela, simbolicamente, fatos reais de uma história de vida.

So that it becomes clear, it is necessary to consider him formally. In Husserl, the sphere of lived experience is the one of the pure ego or pure consciousness, and the intentionality is understood as intentionality of consciousness; in Heidegger, it is treated of what denominated factical life or existence of Dasein, in that the intentionality designates the type of comportment that the human existence maintains in relation to itself and to the world. This work seeks a critical confrontation among the two positions, pointing out the heideggerian concern with the inadequacies of the theoretical attitude and her form of conceiving the field of the formal, towards an investigation concerning the nature and the formation of the concepts and philosophical statements as formal indications. / O fio condutor das investigações fenomenológicas de Edmund Husserl e Martin Heidegger é o conceito de intencionalidade; sua análise tem por finalidade resolver o problema metodológico fundamental acerca do modo de abrir cientificamente a esfera dos vividos (Erlebnis). Para que se torne claro, é necessário considerá-lo formalmente. Em Husserl, a esfera dos vividos é a do ego puro ou consciência pura, e a intencionalidade é compreendida como intencionalidade da consciência; em Heidegger, trata-se do que denominou vida ou existência fáctica do Dasein, em que a intencionalidade designa o tipo de comportamento que a existência humana mantém em relação a si e para com o mundo. Este trabalho visa um confronto crítico entre as duas posições, salientando a preocupação heideggeriana com as insuficiências da atitude teorética e sua forma de conceber o campo do formal, em direção a uma investigação acerca da natureza e da formação dos conceitos e enunciados filosóficos como indicações formais.

The applicability of the phenomenological method to the teaching and learning of religious and moral education in tertiary primary teacher education institutions in Zimbabwe : a case study of Mkoba Teachers College

Bibliography: leaves 148-154 / This research is a case study conducted at Mkoba Teachers’ College from 2017 to 2019 which aimed at establishing the applicability of the phenomenological method to the teaching and learning of Religious and Moral Education (RME) in Tertiary Primary Teacher Education institutions in Zimbabwe. The majority of the student teachers were Christians and had a negative attitude towards African Indigenous Religions (A.I.Rs). They also showed little knowledge of concepts in African Religions yet the old and new syllabus in RME and Family, Religion and Moral Education (FAREME) respectively required them to use the multi-faith approach and to view all religions they may encounter in the classroom with equal importance. This research sought to determine the extent to which the phenomenological method can change the student teachers’ negative attitude to/ and increase their knowledge of A.I.Rs, thus preparing them for the task of religious education in future. In the theoretical framework, the researcher discussed the concept of Religious Education (R.E) and reviewed related literature on approaches to R.E, the history of R.E in pre-colonial and post-colonial periods in Zimbabwe and recent researches in R.E in order to gain insights on historical developments and current trends in the field of R.E. The researcher selected ten (10) participants who belonged to various Christian denominations using the purposive sampling strategy. Qualitative methods of generating data used were unstructured interviews, field work, both participant and non participant observation, and focus group discussion. After field work, participants applied the phenomenological method to the bira ceremony and discussed religious artifacts encountered during field work. On the whole, the phenomenological method increased the participants’ knowledge of A.I.Rs and significantly changed their attitude towards it. Despite the participants’ strong Christian background, they were able to separate the demands of their commitment to personal faith and the requirements of the phenomenological method. The study makes some recommendations,some of which are the use of the phenomenological method together with the multi-faith and comparative religion approaches in the College R.M.E curriculum. / Religious Studies and Arabic / M.A. (Religious Studies)

La signification de l’expérience d’« être avec » la personne soignée et sa contribution à la réadaptation : la perception d’infirmières

De multiples auteurs de la discipline infirmière réclament la valeur inestimable de la relation de caring et de ses bienfaits pour la clientèle nécessitant des soins et services de réadaptation. En dépit de cette importance, la recherche concernant les bienfaits thérapeutiques de la relation de caring pour la clientèle de réadaptation demeure encore un domaine peu exploité. Actuellement, aucune étude scientifique québécoise, canadienne ou internationale, issue de la discipline infirmière, ne porte sur la compréhension de l’expérience d’« être avec » la personne soignée dans un contexte de réadaptation, aspect qui s’avère central à la relation de caring selon Watson. Au cœur même de la philosophie du Human Caring de Watson, la présente étude vise à explorer, par des entrevues qualitatives auprès de 17 infirmières oeuvrant en contexte de réadaptation, la signification de l’expérience d « être avec » la personne soignée, de même que leur perception de la contribution de cette expérience à la réadaptation de la personne soignée. Cinquante et une entrevues, c’est-à-dire trois entrevues réalisées pour chaque participant de recherche, ont été analysées à l’aide de la méthode phénoménologique intitulée « Relational Caring Inquiry » développée par Cara (1997). Le processus de recrutement des participants a impliqué la direction des soins infirmiers des deux centres de réadaptation ciblés par l’étude. Une attention particulière a été mise afin de favoriser une diversité de participants (par exemple : genre, niveau éducationnel, quart de travail, unité de soins). Le processus d’analyse des données a permis la découverte de cinq eidos-thèmes. Parmi ces eidos-thèmes, quatre se rapportent à la signification de l’expérience d’«être avec» la personne soignée (première question de recherche), à savoir : (a) l’importance des valeurs humanistes au centre du soin, (b) l’investissement de l’infirmière et de la personne soignée, (c) les dimensions réciproque et relationnelle du soin et, finalement, (d) l’expérience de soin irremplaçable d’une complexité contextuelle. De façon plus détaillée, le premier eidos-thème dévoile les fondements humanistes à la base de l’expérience d’« être avec » la personne soignée. Le deuxième manifeste l’implication substantielle de l’infirmière et de la personne soignée. Le troisième eidos-thème met en lumière la réciprocité et la dimension relationnelle comme étant des éléments centraux à l’expérience d’« être avec » la personne soignée. Le quatrième eidos-thème documente les natures fondamentale et complexe de cette expérience de soin unique, de même que les conditions contextuelles qui la facilitent et la contraignent. Le cinquième et dernier eidos-thème ayant émergé de la présente étude, « rehaussement de l’harmonie corps-âme-esprit chez la personne soignée et l’infirmière », illustre la perception des participantes quant à la contribution thérapeutique de l’expérience d’« être avec » la personne soignée à la réadaptation de cette dernière (deuxième question de recherche). Cette contribution se situe en termes de répondre aux besoins du patient, d’optimiser les progrès de réadaptation de la personne soignée, de promouvoir le niveau de bien-être de la personne soignée et de l’infirmière et, finalement, de hausser la croissance intérieure des personnes engagées dans cette expérience de soin extraordinaire. La reconnaissance des cinq eidos-thèmes a favorisé l’émergence de l’essence universelle du phénomène à l’étude qui s’intitule « la rencontre humaine profonde, thérapeutique et transformatrice ». La présente étude contribue de façon novatrice au développement des connaissances, notamment en permettant une meilleure compréhension de ce que signifie l’expérience d’« être avec » la personne soignée, pour des infirmières en réadaptation et en proposant une multitude de résultats probants pouvant servir de guide à la promulgation de soins infirmiers en contexte de réadaptation. En déterminant la signification ontologique de cette expérience de soin, la présente étude permet de préciser la place du phénomène d’« être avec » la personne soignée au centre de la théorie du caring. Ces résultats qui découlent de la deuxième question de recherche participent au développement initial d’un corpus de connaissances. Ces résultats probants serviront de guide au renouvellement de la pratique infirmière en contexte de réadaptation. De plus, en identifiant les bienfaits de cette expérience de soin, la présente étude reconnaît l’élément au cœur de la relation transpersonnelle de caring, qui contribue à rehausser l’harmonie corps-âme-esprit chez la personne soignée et l’infirmière. En plus de la clinique, des recommandations au niveau de la formation et de la recherche en sciences infirmières découlent de la présente étude. / Several nursing authors acknowledge the essential value of the caring relationship and its benefits for the rehabilitation clientele. In spite of this importance, the therapeutic benefits of the caring relationship for this clientele remain an unexamined area. Currently, no Quebec, Canadian or international scientific nursing study is concerned with understanding the experience to « be with » the person being cared for in a rehabilitation context, which is central to the caring relationship according to Watson. Inspired by Watson’s Human Caring philosophy, this study aims to investigate, by qualitative interviews with seventeen rehabilitation nurses, the meaning of the experience to « be with » the person being cared for, as well as their perception of the contribution of this experience to the person’s rehabilitation. Fifty one interviews, therefore three interviews for every research participant, were analyzed using the « phenomenological » method entitled « Relational Caring Inquiry » developed by Cara (1997). The process of participant recruitment involved the nursing management team of both rehabilitation centres targeted by the study. A variety of participants was favoured (e.g.: gender, educational level, shift worked, and patient care unit). The process of data analysis allowed the discovery of five eidos-themes. Among these eidos-themes, four refer to the meaning of the experience to « be with » the person cared for (first research question), namely: (a) the importance of humanistic values at the core of the care, (b) the investment of the nurse and the person cared for, (c) the reciprocal and relational care dimensions and finally, (d) the irreplaceable care experience of contextual complexity. In more detail, the first eidos-theme reveals the humanistic basis of the experience to « be with » the cared person. The second expresses the substantial implication of the nurse and the person cared for. The third eidos-theme clarifies the reciprocity and relational dimension as being central elements of the experience to « be with » the person cared for. The fourth eidos-theme documents fundamental and complex origins of this unique care experience, as well as the contextual conditions which facilitate and impede it. The fifth and last eidos-theme emerging from this study, « strengthening the mind-body-spirit harmony of the person cared for and the nurse », illustrates the participants’ perception regarding the therapeutic contribution of the experience to « be with » the person cared (second research question). This contribution meets the patient’s needs, optimizes the rehabilitation progress of the person cared for, promotes the level of well being of the person cared for and the nurse and finally, raises the inner growth of the people engaged in this extraordinary care experience. The recognition of these five eidos-themes supports the emergence of the universal essence of the phenomenon being studied which is entitled « the profound, therapeutic, and transformative human relationship ». The present study contributes, in an innovative way, to knowledge development, in particular by allowing a better understanding of the meaning of rehabilitation nurses’ experience to « be with » the patient, and advancing evidence-based results to be used as a guide for the development of nursing care in the context of rehabilitation. By determining the ontological meaning of this care experience, the present study makes it possible to specify the place of the phenomenon to « be with » the patient as being central to the caring theory. The results arising from the second research question contribute to the development of a body of knowledge. These evidence-based results will be used to guide the renewal of nursing practice in the context of rehabilitation. Moreover, by identifying the benefits of this care experience, the present study recognizes the element at the heart of transpersonal caring relationship, which contributes to mind-body-spirit harmony for both, the person cared for and the nurse. This study also proposes recommendations for education and research in nursing sciences.
