Belíssima: um estudo merleau-pontyano da corporalidade travesti / Beautiful: a Merleau-Ponty study about transvestites corporality

Davi, E. H. D. (2013). Belíssima: um estudo merleau-pontyano da corporalidade travesti. 2013. 183 pps. / DAVI, E. H. D. (2013). Beautiful: a Merleau-Ponty study about transvestites corporality. 2013. 183 pgs. Thesis (Ph. D.) Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Arts, University of São Paulo. Ribeirão Preto. Our purpose is to understand the meanings and feelings attributed by transvestites to the process of changing their bodies. As a changing reality, nowadays the body is treated as merchandise a product that can be repaired, with planned duration. It is possible to see identities and subjectivities built based on artifacts used under or over the skin: piercings, tattoos, scratches, silicone, hormones, body building, cross-dressing which are ways to set means and practices of self-affirmation using the body. The passage through genders and sexualities also reaches a new status, and corporality has become the privileged locus for introducing new affective and sexual practices. Among daily interventions, it is possible to notice the use of silicone, hormones and plastic surgery to reach a desired paragon of the body by different social groups. Particularly among transvestites, the process of pumping the body has become common place, leading to public health issues due to injuries, deformities and even death. The phenomenological method and the reflections of philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty were elected for expanding the understanding of the body transformation process, based on transvestites experiences and the meanings they attribute to this phenomenon. We have analyzed the description of ten transvestites from social classes C and D, who are between 20 and 40 years old, about the meanings they attribute to the process of shaping up their bodies and the affective and sexual practices derived from this change. The results show five categories: the first one is called Initial experiences of becoming a transvestite, in which participants described their first homoaffectionate experiences, as well as the initial experiences of becoming a transvestite; the second one is called Building the body, in which transvestites talked about more radical interventions on the body, such as taking hormones and its effects, administrating silicone, among other practices; the third one is called The body unveiled in the street, in which participants described the process of shaping up the body when entering the prostitution environment, talked about what they learned, obstacles, joys and how it directly affects their corporality; the fourth category is called Movements of a transvestite; in which transvestites described their experiences outside the prostitution environment, and how these experiences contributed to redefine their relationship with their own body and identity; the fifth category is called Dreams and projects, in which participants described their life projects and expectations, which are related to the body and its transformation as a mean to reach their affective and material goals. In their effort to shape up the perfect body, transvestites dare and cross the line between genders, creating a sui generis erotic syntax. The transvestite corporality, from Merleau-Pontys perspective, is the basis of an erotized language; this life and environment is also where projects are put into practice, a place where time passes and unveils a unique and subversive subjectivity. Reaching balance between female and male, pain and joy, transvestites look for a specific ethos, reflected on their live bodies.

The scientific and political investments that cast looks on the trans women appeared in Brazil, more significantly, from the nineties. This interest was driven by cultural and political transformations (in social movements, in academy and in the field of public administration) that enabled knowledge of transvestites and transsexuals as political subjects, proposing new challenges and visibility/production on demands. Questions regarding the body appear as relevant in studies and research produced, pointing interfaces between the body changes and the welfare, health, happiness, civil rights. We question in this dissertation how trans women produce female corporealities, the body comprising on the one side, as historical construction, including (but not limited to) its dimension biological and material, and other, like device that sets in/by power games. These games produce socially valued bodies and, in contrast, others who do not meet the standards of sex-body-gender are relegated to abjection zones. We use the idea of "theme-field" to think the methodology of this study. The research included for its construction transits between events, meetings and realization of interviews-narratives individual with seven residents trans women in the Metropolitan Region of Recife. The analyzes performed from interviews focuses on three main axis: 1) transit bodies: to thinking questions about the pathways and transformations undertaken in bodies; 2) bodies in trances: organizing narratives about the binary body against mind; and 3) bodies in braids, to reflect issues that add up to assign (or not) intelligibility to the bodies, launched here looks to the "body-name" to refer to issues of social and name "esthetic of class". The way of conclusions, we reflect about the difficulties and reaches of this work, thinking about scientific objectivity, and point questions about the potential dialogues between corporeality with education and religion.

The writing that we present was started from a research movement which intended to reach the transvestites who were prostituting themselves. In this search for them, a new element placed itself such as potent for this study. We refer to the nomination, whereas, at the looking for transvestites, we found transsexuals which were exercising the prostitution. Many were the difficulties in accessing them, so we choose realizing a bibliographic research, which aimed locate how prostitutes and transsexuals are being named and further analyze the prostitution constitution between subjects, both discussed from the scientific articles available in the electronic library Scielo. We understand that a process of investigation based in science as knowledge legitimating, though not the unique, would confirm the proposal of the Post-graduation Program in Science Education, in the research line “Education in Science : implications of the scientific practices in Formation of Subjects ”. We considered that more than describe, the science builds the objects and the speeches practices, affects the subjects who orientate their own actions based on these knowledges, or renounce them. For this production and analysis of data, besides de bibliographic research, we looked for inspiration in the content analysis, from where, after the reading of the 70 articles, has emerged two analysis lines based in the recurrence from the elements we’ve found in them: one treats about the elements that operate the distinction between terms; and the other that observes the effects of prostitution in transvestites and transsexuals. The research movement demonstrated how are implicated the processes of nomination and prostitution of transvestite and transsexuals. Even if we have organized in analysis lines, we dare say they don’t happen this way, separately.
