The right to education during the imperial period: a study of its origins in Brazil.

Zichia, Andrea de Carvalho 19 March 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to analyze the idea of the right to education during the Imperial Period (1822 to 1889). The reflection incorporates comparative historical analyzes about the right to education, its interpretation on the legal documents and corresponded debates. The right to education mapping began with the observation of the concept of free tuition and compulsory education by the law. In 1824, the Imperial Constitution (Constituição Política do Brasil Imperial) established the principle of free tuition to elementary schools. With the Amendment Constitutional (Ato Adicional) of 1834 the public administration was decentralized and the provinces were made responsible for primary education. But it was not applied at some provinces at that time according this research. On the contrary, the compulsory concept was discussed by the parliament, so it was implemented in a punctual way, just established as a law in some provinces. Although the right to education as a state duty was officially declared only in 1969, this study shows that there were previous statements, in some provinces, during the Imperial Period.

The correlation between scheduled tuition time, sleep and mental well-being among college students.

Schultzén, Patrik, Aaltonen, Anette January 2009 (has links)
In recent years, sleep deprivation has been increasing in Sweden. This phenomenon has become quite apparent in the student category aged between 20-24 years old. Insomnia, which is correlated with mental well-being, has many causes some of which include an irregular and hectic lifestyle. Students particularly fall into this group and are becoming more and more vulnerable to this condition. The purpose of this study was to find and identify the links between the students’ busy academic schedules and the apparent inability to get a full and restful night sleep. This paper will also profile the psychological aspects of a carefully selected target group for the purpose of this research. Students with more than 10 academic tuition hours reported that they were able to fall asleep and slept well, but also indicated that the duration was insufficient for their need which is in direct contrast to students who had less than 10 tuition hours. This paper also identified that students with poor sleeping or insufficient sleep were more stressed, agitated and suffered from raised levels of anxiety as opposed to other students.</p>

"Se mig, för här är jag" : Lärares resonemang kring innebörden av begreppet individanpassad undervisning i skolår 1 / "Notice me, here I am" : Teacher’s dictums of the definition individual tuition in school year 1

Andersson, Ann-Louise, Andersson, Marica January 2009 (has links)
Curriculum for the Compulsory School System, the Pre-School Class and the Leisure-time Centre (Lpo 94) is clear in its definition that individualized tuition shall be applied in the school and that the tuition shall come from the individual pupil’s needs. Since research emphasizes that the definition and meaning of the term needs is not clear we found it interesting to research how teachers define the meaning of the term individualized tuition in school year 1 with special focus on the aspect of pupils’ needs. In order to study active teachers’ reasoning and dictums regarding this we chose a qualitative method with interviews as aid to gather data. The collected material has been analyzed and subsequently discussed with reference to research within the area. The result shows that individualized tuition is regarded as a question of conditions. The identification of individual pupils’ needs is what is perceived to be the basis of how the education should be individualized. The difficulty lies in that it is not always easy to identify the needs. The result showed that the possibility to individualize bases itself in the access of resources and the school subject’s nature. The result also show that age integrated classes is an advantage considering the access of resources, since cooperation between coworkers makes it easier to enable individualized tuition.

Musikalisk kunskapsutveckling i högre musikutbildning : en kulturpsykologisk studie av musikerstudenters förhållningssätt i enskild instrumentalundervisning / Musical learning and development in higher music education : A cultural-psychological study of performance students’ ways of relating to one-to-one tuition

Holgersson, Per-Henrik January 2011 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to obtain a deeper understanding of students’ approaches to musical knowledge as it is distributed through one-to-one tuition in higher music education (HME). With a cultural-psychological perspective according to Bruner, the project was designed as a longitudinal, qualitative study of eight students in the performance program that concludes with a Bachelor of Arts degree in music. Two main musical genres were represented: Western classical music, and jazz and contemporary music. The students had one-to-one tuition on violin, classical guitar, saxophone and electric guitar, and were observed at three consecutive lessons per semester during one academic year. Many-sided data were collected: video recordings of instrumental lessons, semi-structured interviews with students and teachers, and the participants’ diary notes in connection with the observed lessons. In the analysis, the students’ approaches to knowledge of music cultural tools were focused. The results show that the students use three main approaches in relation to one-to-one tuition: adaptation, reflected navigation and indifference. These approaches vary and overlap, and are connected to the local cultural situations that are being studied, as well as to differences by instrument and genre. The different strategies used by the students are discussed in relation to apprenticeship in higher music education, and in relation to the consequences for students’ musical learning and knowledge development. The results are also connected to the Bologna process and the development of research-based teaching in HME. Methodological considerations and suggestions for further research are put forward. / Genom projektet, Instrumenatlisters musikaliska kunskapsutveckling. People and pedagogy : problem-based learning in the MBChB curriculum at UKZN medical school.

Sommerville, Thomas Edward. January 2012 (has links)
This study explores problem-based learning (PBL) as a form of pedagogy, and its interrelationships with the students, staff members and institution of the Medical Faculty at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Little has been written previously about the interaction of student diversity and resource-constrained circumstances with PBL. I investigate perceptions and experiences of PBL as a pedagogic strategy, using Bernstein's theories of classification and framing as an organising framework. I draw also on his writings on discourses and knowledge structures and the pedagogic device. Within an interpretive methodology, I use three methods to generate data. I analyse numerically the test marks of a cohort of 202 students over three years for demographic influences on pedagogic engagement. I explore in semi-structured interviews the perceptions and experiences of PBL of 19 students and 6 staff members, and relate these to Faculty documents; I analyse these sources thematically in order to describe the roles of student, teacher and institution. These perceptions and experiences I then examine according to the eight elements of Bernstein's classification and framing. A number of contradictions emerge: between PBL theory, echoed by Faculty documents on one hand, and staff/student perceptions and experiences on the other; between staff members and students at some points but not at others; between high-achieving and low-achieving students; between different respondents' under-standings of "integration". Some demographic characteristics prove on analysis to be highly significant influences while others, counter-intuitively, are not. Bernstein's theories about knowledge structures are pertinent to the tensions revealed. Medicine has thought of itself as akin to the pure sciences – implying a hierarchical structure in which all knowledge aggregates towards a point of abstraction. However, the structure and function revealed by respondents suggests a horizontal knowledge structure, in which disciplinary knowledge is kept distinct. Students and teachers thus struggle to integrate areas of knowledge that are inherently discrete. In terms of Bernstein's "pedagogic device", some students are able to discern PBL's implicit rules of engagement, while others are not. Consensus on medicine‟s knowledge structure might settle ambiguities and help PBL achieve its potential as a complex pedagogy in a complex field. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2012.

Evaluation of the use of an online learning management sytem at the Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa.

Ndamase, Zanele Victoria. January 2006 (has links)
This study investigates the use of a Web Based Learning environment to support a newly introduced Problem Based Learning curriculum at the Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine. Questionnaires, observations and interviews form the basis of this qualitative study amongst first and second year students. Attempts are made to interrogate the way in which staff members use the system to support a constructivist learning environment. In addition similar prior research at this institution is taken into account and reported in the literature review. While not disputing the findings of earlier research the qualitative methodology used here shows some discrepancies with previous research. In particular, although learners are able to, and do, make use of the system it is predominantly used for the dissemination and retrieval of information. The basic premises of construction of knowledge are not facilitated by the Medical School's use of the Web Based Learning environment and of great concern was the small number of staff members who saw it as an integral part of the new curriculum and learning process. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, 2006.
