"Du är rätt så borta om du inte vet vad studenterna talar om" : Om universitetsbibliotekariers ämneskunskaper / “You are quite far off if you don’t know what the students are talking about” : The Subject Knowledge for University Librarian

This thesis discusses the subject knowledge of university librarians, gained through education and/or experience in the field. The aim was to investigate the subject knowledge for university librarians, how the existence of subject knowledge or the lack thereof affects the librarians’ work and how the users’ view on the librarians' subject knowledge. I also wanted to investigate if there were differences between librarians at the interdisciplinary libraries and special librarians and whether there were differences between disciplines. This thesis is based on professional theory and librarian occupation as a profession or semi-profession. Additionally I explored what previous studies (mostly American) had said about the subject knowledge of university libraries, both general and divided into different disciplines. For this study I used online questionnaires to 274 librarians, library assistants and other staff of university libraries and 169 users. The questionnaire for the libraries was sent out to contacts at selected libraries, which in their turn asked the staff at these libraries to participate. For user survey I asked users in the libraries personally to participate and then sent out email to them. The responses were analysed mainly on the basis of computer generated results in the web tool and these results was published in the form of tables and diagrams in the study. The results of this survey was mainly that the portion of librarians with subject background was quite low, particularly in terms of subject specific degree, and that experience was relatively high. They are also differences between librarians on interdisciplinary libraries and librarians on subject specialized libraries, mainly that the proportion of completed degree in library science is higher for the subject librarians and the proportion who think that subject knowledge is important is lower in the same group. There are also differences between different disciplines, mainly in the terms of degree, both in library science and other topics, experience, and if the subject knowledge is important in the field. Based on these findings I could conclude that the librarian occupation is a semi-profession rather than a profession. The main conclusions was that librarians think that subject knowledge is important but that this is not seen to the same extent in their education or training although that it partially counterbalanced by experience. Its users find the librarians' subject knowledge partly is quite poor but that they nonetheless receive sufficient help. There are according to me possible methods to raise the subject knowledge of university librarians, mainly by trying to associate librarians with appropriate education to subject libraries and to create a specialisation on university librarianship.

本研究主要探討大學圖書館在進行知識管理時的管理程序,並針對系統及管理流程兩方面給予建議。本研究採用訪談法,以國立政治大學的圖書館館員及電子計算機中心人員為對象,對研究問題進行探討。 研究結果分為知識管理流程與知識管理系統開發兩方面:在知識管理流程方面,其內容應包含知識取得、知識創造、知識整合與儲存、知識轉移與擴散,及知識分享五個階段,並要與目前作流程相互結合。而知識管理系統開發方面,則有以下三點結論:(1)大學圖書館在進行系統開發時應該遵守相關國際標準,以利於未來進行知識分享與交換;(2)系統功能應具備靈活與彈性,以利於未來發展及永續經營;(3)應定期為知識管理系統做後續維修與資料備份工作。 / This study discusses the management procedure when the knowledge management is proceeding in university libraries. And we also provide some advices aimed at its system and relative procedure. In order to investigate this research, the Interview Method is introduced, and we took the librarians and staffs of Computer Center in NCCU as objects of this method. Conclusions of this research can be described in the procedure of knowledge management and in the development of knowledge management system:As to the procedure of knowledge management , it should have five steps including Knowledge Acquisition, Knowledge Creating, Knowledge Integrating & Storing, Transmitting & Applying, and Knowledge Sharing. And these steps have to be combined with the present operation procedure. As to the building of knowledge management system, we have following three advices, (1) in favor of prospective knowledge sharing and exchanging, university libraries should obey the international standard when the development is carrying out. (2) in favor of prospective expansion and sustainable use , the functions of the procedure have to be provided with good flexibility. (3) the follow-up repair and data copy of the system are required regularly .

Das Jahr 2013 brachte eine ganze Reihe von erfreulichen Neuerungen, auch wenn es nicht frei von Sorgen war. Was im letzten Tätigkeitsbericht angesprochen wurde, trat ein: Eine Krise bei den Erwerbungsmitteln, die sich seit längerem ankündigte (s. Tabelle unter IV ). Eine Reihe von Online‐Lizenzen konnte nicht mehr verlängert werden. Im Verein mit dem Rektorat und den Fakultäten bemüht sich die Universitätsbibliothek um Verbesserungen in der angespannten Situation.

Das Jahr 2014 war ein Jahr der Weichenstellungen: Bauten wurden geplant und begonnen (s. I), ein neues Serviceportfolio in Sachen Katalog inauguriert (s. II), sowie Open Access an der Universität etabliert (s. III). Drittmittelstark ist die Universitätsbibliothek Leipzig mit über 40 Projektvorhaben, davon allein knapp 30 in den Bereichen Erschließung und Erforschung (s. V). Mit jedem Fortschritt öffnen sich neue Horizonte: Wo ein Erschließungsprojekt endet, knüpft ein Forschungsprojekt an. Wo ein Bauvorhaben geplant oder realisiert wird, wird die Ausstattung zur Herausforderung. Die Universitätsbibliothek arbeitet in allen Bereichen und Abteilungen daran, sich planmäßig und zielstrebig als ein zentraler Dienstleister der Universität und als Forschungsbibliothek zu profilieren. Der hier vorgelegte Tätigkeitsbericht dokumentiert Leistungen auf diesem Weg.

Im Jahr 2015 konnten lange währende Baumaßnahmen in der Bibliotheca Albertina abgeschlossen werden – das versetzt die UB Leipzig in einen glücklichen Zustand. Ebenfalls seit 2015 gibt es eine feste Perspektive für die Neubauten der künftigen Fachbibliotheken Medizin/Naturwissenschaften in der Liebigstraße und den Bildungscampus in der Jahnallee – das macht uns hoffnungsfroh, den Service auch in diesen Bereichen grundlegend verbessern zu können. Wir nutzen die Gelegenheit dieses Tätigkeitsberichts und danken dem Rektorat für dauerhafte Unterstützung bei all diesen Vorhaben, dem Baudezernat der Universität ebenso wie dem Staatsbetrieb Sächsisches Immobilien- und Baumanagement – Leipzig II und nicht zuletzt den für die Gestaltung verantwortlichen Architekturbüros (Architekturbüro Weis&Volkmann in der Bibliotheca Albertina, Architekturbüro agn für den Bildungscampus und h.e.i.z.Haus für die Medizin/Naturwissenschaften). Im Jahr 2015 hat die Universitätsbibliothek eine Reihe weiterer Neuerungen einführen oder umsetzen können, worüber wir in diesem Bericht gern Auskunft geben.

International students’ experiences of using online resources for academic writing

This qualitative descriptive case study investigates four Chinese international students’ use of online resources for academic writing in a western Canadian university. This study has direct implications for English as a Foreign Language/English as a Second Language writing instruction as well as international students’ use of university library. Methodological triangulation was used to collect data. This included a semi-structured interview, a computer-based writing task, and a think-aloud activity. Data was coded and analyzed within cases and re-analyzed across the four cases. The salient themes that emerged from this analysis include: indispensable role of online resources in academic writing; a solution to language problems; ability of evaluation; a solution to plagiarism; influences of search habits; concerns about graduate students; and the importance of professors. Four major findings of the study include: important uses of online resources for solving language problems; students’ search skills in online databases; students’ use of the UVic library; and the importance of professors’ instruction. Sistemáticas de gestão de layout para aprimoramento dos fluxos de uma biblioteca universitária

O setor de serviços tem fundamental importância para a economia global, porém o layout de organizações deste setor tipicamente não é abordado com a mesma intensidade com que se discute arranjo físico em ambientes industriais. O objetivo desta dissertação reside na aplicação de sistemáticas de concepção de layout com vistas ao planejamento e aprimoramento do arranjo físico e agrupamento de recursos de uma biblioteca. Como objetivos específicos, traz a aplicação do planejamento sistemático de layout (SLP) para o posicionamento de recursos e organização dos fluxos de uma biblioteca, e a adaptação do algoritmo Close Neighbor para agrupamento de materiais bibliográficos (livros) em prateleiras de acordo com sua área de abrangência. Para tanto, inicialmente apresentam-se as características da Biblioteca da Faculdade de Farmácia da UFRGS (local de aplicação do estudo), a análise da movimentação de pessoas e de materiais, a abordagem proposta e as diretrizes para organização do arranjo físico da biblioteca e do acervo de livros. Dentre outros procedimentos operacionais, fez-se necessária a realização de reuniões com a equipe da biblioteca e com a direção da Faculdade de Farmácia, visando a estabelecer prioridades e definir características desejadas para o arranjo físico do espaço em estudo. Na sequência, implantou-se a proposta de layout selecionada, seguida de uma discussão acerca do desempenho da biblioteca antes e depois da implantação do novo layout; tal discussão foi baseada tanto em resultados numéricos (análise quantitativa) como na percepção da equipe envolvida (análise qualitativa). / The service sector is of fundamental importance to the global economy, but the layout of organizations in this sector is typically not approached with the same intensity with which physical arrangement is discussed in industrial environments. The objective of this dissertation is to apply layout design systematics with a view to planning and improving the physical arrangement and grouping of library resources. As a specific goal, the application of systematic layout planning (SLP) for the positioning of resources and organization of a library's flows, and the adaptation of the Close Neighbor algorithm for grouping bibliographic materials (books) into shelves according to their area of comprehensiveness. In order to do so, the characteristics of the Library of the Faculty of Pharmacy of UFRGS (place of application of the study), the analysis of the movement of people and materials, the proposed approach and the guidelines for the organization of the physical arrangement of the library and of the collection of books. Among other operational procedures, it was necessary to hold meetings with the library staff and the Faculty of Pharmacy, in order to establish priorities and define desired characteristics for the physical arrangement of the space under study. Next, the selected layout proposal was implanted, followed by a discussion about the library's performance before and after the implementation of the new layout; such a discussion was based on both numerical results (quantitative analysis) and the perception of the team involved (qualitative analysis).

The research aims to propose a strategic planning model to be implemented by the Library System of the Federal University of Amazon (SISTEBIB / UFAM). To achieve the above, the literature review included topics such as strategy, describing concepts already established among specialists, as well as strategic planning, especially its applicability in the environment of non-profit organizations with a view to enlist the use of this in University Libraries (Bus), identifying the macro-strategies applied by units of information, and describe the ten schools of thought on strategy formulation. We selected three strategic planning Systems Brazilian University Libraries, analysis of these and sought to identify the main macro-strategies used by these organizations as well as schools planning more employed by these units of information in order to understand their processes and influences in order to compose a model to be implemented in the University Library System Federal Amazon. The research, exploratory type, was performed through secondary sources, in particular, the literature review and documentary. For the parameter analysis was adopted in order to compose a qualitative descriptive and interpretive result. The proposed model consists of eight stages, which comprise the basic requirements in the process of strategic planning at BU. / O planejamento estratégico possibilita um diagnóstico preciso da realidade, favorecendo a participação dos colaboradores o que é fundamental na implementação de ações que contribuem para a melhoria dos serviços oferecidos. A pesquisa teve como objetivo propor um modelo de planejamento estratégico a ser implantado pelo Sistema de Bibliotecas da Universidade Federal do Amazonas (SISTEBIB/UFAM). Para atingir o exposto, a revisão de literatura contemplou temas como estratégia, descrevendo conceitos já consolidados entre os especialistas da área, bem como planejamento estratégico, em especial sua aplicabilidade no ambiente de organizações sem fins lucrativos com intuito de arrolar o emprego deste em Bibliotecas Universitárias (Bus), identificando as macroestratégias aplicadas pelas unidades de informação, além de descrever as dez escolas do pensamento sobre formulação de estratégia. Foram selecionados três planejamentos estratégicos de Sistemas de Bibliotecas Universitárias Brasileiras, a análise destes buscou apontar quais são as principais macroestratégias utilizadas por essas organizações, bem como as escolas de planejamento mais empregadas por essas unidades de informação de modo a compreender seus processos e influências visando compor um modelo para ser implantado no Sistema de Bibliotecas da Universidade Federal do Amazonas.
