Grow your business for God. : Exploring entrepreneuship in the Pentecostal churches in Uganda.

Akuma, Tom January 2018 (has links)
Pentecostalism has grown from its founding days in 1900 in Topeka, USA and has extended its reach to most parts the world including Africa where it took off in the 1970s and continues to grow with many mega churches being established. In addition to their main role of taking care of the spiritual development of their followers, many Pentecostal churches have begun to get involved in provision of social and economic goods and services. This has however attracted attention to the churches with some of them being labelled as businesses, their founders being considered as entrepreneurs hiding under the guise of churches and seen as exploiting their followers. The purpose of the thesis is to explore, through research questions, if entrepreneurial activities are carried out in the Pentecostal churches in Uganda and if so, whether such activities can be considered productive, unproductive or destructive entrepreneurship and what their implications are. This qualitative study employed qualitative methods of data collection and deductive approach with primary data collected through semi-structured interviews with 6 members of Pentecostal churches in Kampala and 1 non-member that regularly goes to Pentecostal churches to get a feel of their activities. The findings show that there the Pentecostal churches carryout a number of entrepreneurial activities that address spiritual, social and economic aspects of the church members and the community. The study further shows that some of these entrepreneurial activities have a positive impact on the church members and the community and by extension the state whereas some activities do not improve the church members and the community and others have a negative impact on the church members and the community. It is shown through this thesis that determining the implication of the entrepreneurial activities is complicated when such activities are lumped together and not considered individually since some of the activities in the Pentecostal may be productive while some may be unproductive or destructive. The contribution of this thesis is by proposing a matrix as an alternative tool for analysis of the various entrepreneurial activities in the Pentecostal churches by considering their effect on different stakeholders to determine if the activity achieved the reason for its establishment.

The present thesis aims to probe the theoretical comprehension on the analitical categories of the productive and unproductive work in order to understand them in the relation to the social worker job. It also intends to probe the disclosure of the abstract dimension of the job, trying to draw reflections which will lead towards a higher knowledge of the social worker job principles and later to a greater comprehension of the forementioned categories in the marxist and marxian thought. The pathway followed to implement the study proposal aforesaid, which will be developed through a theoretical research, is composed by two chapters. The first one is constituted by the theoretical understanding and exposition of some determinations of the capitalist socialibility from the work perspective and productivity: productive and unproductive work. Some other parameters will be analysed: its constitutive dimensions, its insertion in the social relationships and its contemporary settings; whereas the second chapter is constituted by the understanding and explicitness on how the social assistant falls within the social and technical work division; and its salaried condition. Ultimately, some final comments will be drawn on the apprehension of the social workers on the productivity, necessity of a better treatment and understanding of the salaried situation of these professionals, as well as, on the contemporary conditions on which these specialized works are being hired.

Can George Bataille’s thinking be a contribution to management sciences ? : the example of the management of psychosocial risks in organisations

March, François de 10 December 2013 (has links)
The goal of this thesis is to question the work of the French author Georges Bataille (1897-1962) to determine whether it can bring new points of view or new attempts at solving the issues raised by management sciences. The texts which were studied are primarily theoretical essays, but also some works of fiction. Those which are at the origin of the notion of “expense”, a central notion in the entire work, the articles which correspond to various group activities in the 30’s, the essays of La Somme Athéologique during the war, as well as those of La Part maudite, after the war, were also examined. We then show that the “notions” these texts illustrate, which reflect a torn anthropology (productive/unproductive expense, homogenous/heterogenous, sovereignty, communication, interdiction/transgression, possible/impossible…), can open fields of research in numerous topics associated with management sciences: power, corporate culture, crime within organisations, organisational changes, the meaning of work, ethics, epistemology, the relationship between management and societies, sexuality in organisations…Three of Bataille’s notions (expense, sovereignty, communication) are then called upon to analyse in detail the problems raised when managing psychosocial risks. Eight case studies of organisations back up the demonstration. Finally, the thesis concludes that it is pertinent to refer to Bataille’s thinking when conducting management research.

From the "rising tide" to solidarity: disrupting dominant crisis discourses in dementia social policy in neoliberal times

MacLeod, Suzanne 26 March 2014 (has links)
As a social worker practising in long-term residential care for people living with dementia, I am alarmed by discourses in the media and health policy that construct persons living with dementia and their health care needs as a threatening “rising tide” or crisis. I am particularly concerned about the material effects such dominant discourses, and the values they uphold, might have on the collective provision of care and support for our elderly citizens in the present neoliberal economic and political context of health care. To better understand how dominant discourses about dementia work at this time when Canada’s population is aging and the number of persons living with dementia is anticipated to increase, I have rooted my thesis in poststructural methodology. My research method is a discourse analysis, which draws on Foucault’s archaeological and genealogical concepts, to examine two contemporary health policy documents related to dementia care – one national and one provincial. I also incorporate some poetic representation – or found poetry – to write up my findings. While deconstructing and disrupting taken for granted dominant crisis discourses on dementia in health policy, my research also makes space for alternative constructions to support discursive and health policy possibilities in solidarity with persons living with dementia so that they may thrive. / Graduate / 0452 / 0680 / 0351 / macsuz@shaw.ca
